Opal: Weren't you even going to say goodbye?
Amanda: I didn't want to make it any tougher than it is. I was going to call later.
Opal: Running away is rarely the best answer.
Amanda: In this case, it's the only answer. I have to do this for my baby as much as for me. I -- I left Jake a note trying to explain things, so --
Opal: Well, you don't really think that that's going to help him understand, do you? You are a smart girl. You know how much Jake has come to care for you.
Amanda: I'm sorry. I really wish that things had worked out differently. I have to get to the airport. Goodbye, Opal.
Krystal: Marissa does not need to know that the parents she loved adopted her.
Adam: And the parent she doesn't know sold her.
Krystal: You bastard.
Adam: I'm a man of my word. You helped J.R. get custody of Little Adam, and in return your sordid secret is safe with me.
Krystal: It better be. Because if you ever tell anyone, I'll kill you.
Erica: Sounds like you've been a naughty boy again.
Adam: She didn't care for the catch of the day.
Erica: Well, I'm waiting.
Adam: Well, I honestly wish I could accommodate you and run upstairs with you for a little afternoon delight. But my keeper over there is keeping a very close eye on me.
Erica: Well, Adam, I'm not about to let go what I just overheard without an explanation. What is it, Adam? What is it that Krystal will kill you for if you tell anyone?
Adam: All right, but you have to promise you won't breathe a word of it.
Scott: Hey, you going to the hospital? You want a ride?
J.R.: I'm actually going to lunch. I've got some other work I've got to do.
Scott: Work? Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa -- how can you think of work at a time like this? Look, I know you have your doubts, but, watch. Today we save the first of many lives.
J.R.: This heart valve technology is still brand new. I'll celebrate when it proves itself.
Scott: When the money starts rolling in, you mean?
J.R.: This is not about a profit-and-loss statement. This is about human lives, one in particular. His mother and I go way back. For the last time, I'll celebrate when this damn thing works.
Scott: Ok, you're right, but it's going to work, I know it.
J.R.: Yeah. Your lips to God's ears.
David: There is no doubt I am the most qualified surgeon you'll find around here, but that doesn't mean that I will operate on your son.
Kendall: Why won't you operate on him? You just said it was his best possible chance under the circumstances.
Zach: He has other reservations.
Kendall: Well, what other reservations? It can't be because of what you went through with Leora in the operating room. I mean, you've already shown that you can operate on Ian once before. Why won't you do it again?
David: The surgery I performed on Ian initially was a standard, tried, and trusted procedure. I was willing to attempt the surgery with the new device before it came to be that the first patient would be a child.
Zach: And it doesn't help that this valve is owned by Chandler Enterprises.
Kendall: Is that the real reason? Are you kidding me? Are you that petty? You would risk my child's life because of your hatred for Adam Chandler?
Adam: Krystal wasn't lying. She really would kill me if she found out I told you.
Erica: Adam, I am here to talk to you about whether your heart valve could save little Ian's life, so I obviously have more pressing concerns going on. Please just tell me.
Adam: All right, if you insist. You've seen Krystal lately? You've seen she looks different. Do you agree?
Erica: Well, I'm not quite sure what you mean.
Adam: All right, I have it on the very best authority -- it isn't her natural color.
Erica: You think you're so cute.
Adam: You're the first person ever to accuse me of that one.
Erica: You have some information about Krystal that she doesn't want anyone else to know, and you are using it to blackmail her. That's why she threw David under the bus at the custody hearing, and that's why she's ready to slit your throat right now.
Adam: Would you be terribly upset if she did?
Erica: Tell me her deep, dark secret before she makes good on her threat.
Marissa: Can I get you anything?
Erica: Oh, no, I'm fine, thank you.
Adam: You've been delightful today. Thank you. Well, I'll tell you this much -- if I ever decide to tell anyone of Krystal's deep, dark secret, it will be you.
Erica: Because you owe me.
Adam: Because I can resist you for only so long.
Erica: I'll just keep that in mind.
Jesse: Ok, yeah, that's better. I can hear you now. Yes, Sergeant, I understand that, but you need to understand that we need details. No. The last we heard, he was on his way to Germany to a hospital. Yes, please, any news whatsoever, any at all. Yes, this is the right number to contact us with. All right, then. Thank you. Thank you, Sergeant. Well, he's still on his way to Landstuhl, and the sergeant promised that the Army would call us as soon as he's checked in and they have more information.
Angie: Oh, God, I'm going to go crazy!
Jesse: Angie, please, just hold on. He's still alive. All right, now, I'm going to need you to help me keep believing that he's ok.
[Knock on door]
Taylor: Hey. Did you find out anything?
Brot: Well, I was able to find out that he's still alive and he's not in critical condition, which is good.
Taylor: Good. Thank God.
Jesse: Go on.
Brot: Well, I don't have too many details, but I went to the base, and I was able to see the commander.
Randi: Yeah, so, what happened with Frankie?
Brot: I think you better sit back down for this.
Opal: Where the hell have you been, and why didn't you have your cell phone on?
Jake: I was in the E.R. I was in surgery.
Opal: She left.
Opal: Amanda -- she packed her bags, and she headed for the airport.
Jake: Did she say anything?
Opal: Well, she left you this note.
Opal: Probably scared out of her mind by David Hayward, and who could blame her, really? Well, what did she say?
Jake: Just that she needs a fresh start and it's her and the baby from here on out, and I need to -- I need to understand.
Opal: Oh, well, she's just -- she's not thinking straight. It's hormones. You've got to go after her, Jake. You know, get her. Catch up with her before she gets on that plane. Well, come on. What are you waiting for?
Jake: You don't understand. She's obviously made up her mind. I'm going to run after her and try to change it for her?
Opal: Jake, you care about her.
Jake: Yes, of course, I care about her. I told her that I care about her. But, I don't know, maybe running away from here is the best thing that she could do.
J.R.: What, are you following me around? I can't have lunch without you hovering around me?
Marissa: Actually, you're sitting in my section, but I can have you seated elsewhere if you like. It's no problem, really. You don't exactly seem like a big tipper anyway.
J.R.: I didn't realize that you worked here. I'm sorry if I came off like a jerk.
Marissa: It's ok. I probably deserved it anyway. I started it the other day when I ragged to you about your kid at the beach. I'm not a very tactful person. I tend to stick my nose where it doesn't belong.
J.R.: You were just showing concern for my son. How could I argue with that?
Marissa: You found a way.
J.R.: I -- listen, I wanted to thank you again. You kept me from making a really big mistake at ConFusion with that drink. So, thanks.
Marissa: What can I say? My cape and leotard are still at the cleaners.
J.R.: You know, how about you and me start over?
Marissa: That works for me. I'm Marissa.
J.R.: I'm J.R.
Marissa: So, how can I help you today?
J.R.: How about a prayer for a little boy?
Kendall: Please tell me you are not letting your stupid fight with the Chandlers keep Ian from getting the help he needs.
David: All right, look, I admit that's a factor, albeit a minor one compared to the truth that I have yet to be convinced that this device has been thoroughly tested enough to assure its viability.
Zach: I agree with David. Take Adam out of this for a second. There's a gamble here. You know, there's plenty of valves out there that have been proven.
Kendall: Yes, with their own proven risks. Zach, you heard Joe. It could be a lifetime of worrying about him bleeding to death from a simple cut, or more surgeries. I mean, how many times can they tear open his chest and sew him back together before he just can't take it anymore? Please, David. Please, please do the surgery.
David: Kendall, I'm sorry. I can't. It's bad enough that Adam's pushing this right now for his own selfish reasons, but the fact that you two are on either side of this matter -- I simply cannot take that kind of risk. I'd be leaving myself open to all sorts of liabilities. There are other qualified surgeons here at the hospital, if you so desire to go with the surgery. I'm sorry.
Zach: You've got to be clear-headed about this. Just be patient, all right? I've got some calls out to New York --
Kendall: No, no, no, no. There's not enough time. There's not enough time. We need to take care of this now. If we don't, Ian could die.
[Cell phone rings]
Gayle: It's me.
David: What is it? Did Chandler have another seizure?
Gayle: No, in fact, he insisted on going out to eat at the Yacht Club.
David: Ok, so why are you calling me?
Gayle: I thought you might want to know that he was sitting with your wife.
David: Did you get to hear what they were talking about?
Gayle: No. I was banished across the room. But Mrs. Hayward started getting very upset. I heard her threaten to kill Mr. Chandler, then Erica Kane showed up and your wife left.
David: Let me know anything else you find out.
Brot: Well, his unit came under attack, and somehow his hands got trapped in some kind of heavy machinery or something.
Angie: His -- his hands?
Brot: They were crushed.
Randi: And did he lose them? Amputation? What?
Brot: I don't know, and I'm sorry, but that's all I can find out for now.
Angie: A doctor's hands are everything, but -- but he's alive.
Brot: That's right.
Angie: He's -- he's alive.
Brot: That's right.
Scott: Mr. Slater, hi. Scott Chandler. Is Ian in surgery yet?
Scott: Oh. Well, when are they supposed to start?
Zach: There's not going to be any surgery -- not with your family's valve, anyway.
Scott: Why not? What happened? I thought time was critical.
Zach: Why don't you run along and leave us alone. Did you not hear me?
Kendall: There's no change. He's just -- he's lying there, absolutely still. No smiling, no crying, just staring out, waiting.
Zach: I'm expecting a phone call from New York any minute. You've got to understand something. We both want the same thing for Ian. It just -- what if something goes wrong with that valve? Then what?
Kendall: Zach, why can't you believe something will go right? I mean, there are no guarantees with any choice that we've got. And you sitting around waiting for a phone call from yet another doctor is not going to save our son. What happened to the man who was willing to make tough decisions, the man willing to take chances?
Zach: You mean the man who took a chance on you and me? That guy?
[Amanda listens to a Spanish telenovela while waiting for her flight at the airport and smiles]
[Man and woman speaking Spanish]
Jake: Let me explain what's happening here. See, she thinks that Paulo is hasta-la-vista forever, never coming back. So she takes Marco, the loan shark's, offer up on marrying her. So she does, as long as he pays off the mortgage on the grandma's house, but she's screwing herself here because if Paulo comes back -- if Paulo comes back, Marco is going to be pissed --
Opal: You know, if dumb was dirt you would cover about a half-acre.
Jake: Because Paolo loves her.
Opal: Jake, Amanda is just plain scared. She needs reassurance. She doesn't need somebody who's going to agree with her decision to leave town.
Jake: Opal, it's a very complicated situation, ok? It's not just about David Hayward. It's everything. It's the way that she was raised. It's her mom. Her mom was in and out of mental institutions. It's all the men --
Opal: Yeah, but --
Jake: That she has had relationships with in this town.
Opal: Yeah, but you are leaving out the most important part. She cares about you a lot, and you care about her. And all the rest is just a lot of annoying buzz-buzz static.
Jake: I already told her that I care about her, and I told her I would take care of her, but she still chose to leave, so I -- don't I have to respect that?
Jesse: So, other than his hands, did you hear of any other injuries?
Brot: Not that the commander could tell me at the time, but I do know that the damage to his hands is the reason he was sent to Landstuhl, Germany.
Jesse: So, then, things could really be ok? I mean, he's still alive, no head or chest injuries. And it might be unthinkable, what could have happened to his hands, but he's still alive, and this is what need to focus on.
Brot: You're absolutely right. Whatever happened to Frankie, it's going to change his life. But at least we know he's not going to lose his life, and they assured me of that. And he has all of us to help him when he gets home, and that's the important thing.
Angie: I'm not waiting for that. I have to see my baby. I'm going to pack.
Jesse: Look, baby, no. We need to wait here until we hear more from the Army.
Angie: No, he has to have someone with him there now. He needs me.
Randi: He needs his wife. He needs me. I'm going to go to Germany.
J.R.: So, it's my company's heart valve that's going into the kid today, so --
Marissa: Well, that's great. So you'll be part of saving of life.
Marissa: What? Why is that so bad?
J.R.: What if it doesn't work? What if the heart valve is faulty, or worse yet, what if the kid dies? He's only 2 years old. His mom and I used be real close. I just -- I know that it would kill her.
Marissa: I wish I had some wise words for you, but I am fresh out. If you're a religious man, you could say a prayer. Otherwise, the best you can do is play the optimist.
J.R.: You sound like my cousin, Scott. You met him here the other day. He says that -- that people focus on the downside. That's why things tend to go bad. Yeah.
Marissa: That's a load of crap. Your cousin reads too many fortune cookies. Bad stuff happens, period. Life just simply sucks sometimes.
J.R.: Tell me how you really feel.
Marissa: Hey, my -- my life was cake for a while. Then one night my dad fell asleep at the wheel, and he and my mom end up dead. He'd missed his last two life insurance payments, so suddenly I'm totally out of luck. None of it had to do with negative thinking. Just -- just the way the cards were dealt. So now I'm waiting tables to keep a roof over my head. Speaking of which, I better get to work before I screw this up, too. Lamb chops, right?
J.R.: Yeah. Yeah.
Marissa: Ok. I will be right back.
David: Hey. This is a nice surprise. I could use someone in my corner.
Krystal: I just thought I would stop by to see when you thought you'd be home. I was hoping you and me could go get a little bite to eat somewhere, just the two of us?
David: Well, that sounds like it could be nice, but you seem like you're upset. Is everything all right? I mean, did something happen with Marissa?
Krystal: No, no, we're back on track.
David: Good. Well, then, who has you upset?
Krystal: It's nothing.
Krystal: Adam and I had a little disagreement.
David: Really? I'm sorry to hear that. I wish you would just tell me what he's holding over you. Krystal, I promise I will make sure he never upsets you again.
Krystal: Listen, I've told you this before. As much as I would like for you to be involved, I can't, ok? This is just something that I need to handle on my own. I wish you would understand that.
David: I wish I could, but I honestly don't. I'm your husband. You keep telling me you don't want secrets, right?
Krystal: You're right, but I need to keep this one.
David: And you think that's fair?
Krystal: I really wish you wouldn't pressure me, all right? This is -- this is something old, all right? It happened long before you came back to Pine Valley, and I need to handle it myself. Please.
David: All right.
Krystal: Can I expect you home soon?
David: Actually, I'm not sure how long it will be. I'll have to get back to you.
Erica: What's going on? Is Ian ok?
Kendall: Well, not for long. David won't do the surgery.
Erica: Why not?
Kendall: I think it's Adam. He hates the man so much, he refuses to use anything that will help Adam's company.
Erica: And he's putting that before operating and saving this baby's life? Ok, what about another doctor?
Kendall: Well, Zach called, but, I mean, Mom, you heard Joe. He said time is running out. And Zach -- he's not sure about using the new valve either.
Erica: Then can't they put in the more traditional one?
Kendall: Well, they may have to, but then he'll either have to use these blood thinner drugs, or they'll have to do more surgeries, or both. And then one day -- I don't know -- his poor little body could just give out.
Erica: No, no, no, no. Nobody's going to let your baby die.
Kendall: Mom, what I am going to do? I mean, what can I do?
Erica: Ok, you are going to stay right here, right by that baby's side, and I am going to take care of the rest.
Kendall: No, mom. Mom, there's no way you can talk David into it -- not the way he feels about Adam.
Erica: It's not David I'm going to take on.
Gayle: Mr. Chandler's resting and isn't supposed to have any --
Erica: He'll see me.
Gayle: Oh, well, I don't think you understand. Mr. Chandler's under strict orders not to --
Erica: Oh, why don't you just go make us some tea?
Adam: Erica. Well, what a treat. Twice in one day. Whatever could you be thinking?
Erica: I'm not here to play games, Adam.
Adam: Oh, you want something, then.
Erica: I want you to convince David Hayward to put your company's heart valve into little Ian.
Adam: Whatever happened to Jake Martin performing the surgery?
Erica: Zach won't ok that. And David refuses to step in because your name is on that valve.
Adam: Then find another doctor.
Erica: No, there isn't time, Adam. And David is here, and David is brilliant in the operating room.
Adam: No, he is never going to use anything that my company produces. We need that valve up and working.
Erica: Adam, you have something on his wife. You're blackmailing her with it. I'm sure that David would want to know all about that and what that dirt involves.
Adam: I can't share that.
Erica: Why not?
Adam: Well, it might be some unpleasant ramifications.
Erica: You owe me, Adam. I helped get your little grandson out of this town when you thought you would lose him, and at no little cost to me. So I am calling in my marker. I don't care what you have to do. You convince David Hayward by the end of today.
Zach: I don't know what to do. I don't get it. I know you don't get it either. You're sitting here with tubes and wires coming out of you. You're just a kid. You should be outside playing, not in here. I should be in here. You fought enough already. They'll fix it. It's your heart. They've got to fix it. It's important. It's where love grows. It's where integrity lives and honor lives, forgiveness lives. And when the whole world's screaming at you, that's where you go to find some peace, find your truth. So what do you think, man? If I were you and you were me standing out here trying to make the decision, what would you do?
J.R.: Wow, that looks great.
Marissa: Let me know if you need anything else.
J.R.: You know what, how about one of those prayers we were talking about earlier?
Marissa: It's already taken care of.
J.R.: Thank you. Oh, great.
Marissa: He doesn't look like Mr. Glass-half-full today.
Scott: Hi. We have a problem.
J.R.: Ian? Is he all right?
Scott: Oh, they haven't even started the surgery yet. The Slaters won't use Jake, and David Hayward has refused to perform the operation.
J.R.: I see. Let me guess, Hayward doesn't like the fact that it's a Chandler product.
Scott: You got it.
J.R.: Do you mind packing this to go?
Marissa: Yeah, no problem.
Scott: This is a disaster.
J.R.: Oh, come on, cheer up, Scott. Positive attitude and all that. Right?
[As she listens to the telenovela in Spanish, Amanda recalls happier times with Jake, then becomes tearful as she watches a happy couple with their baby.]
Jesse: All right, listen to me. We all need to take a breath and just thank God that Frankie is still is alive. We need to wait for the Army to call and let us know what comes next.
Angie: He needs his mother.
Randi: He needs his wife.
Jesse: Randi --
Brot: You know, I'm sorry, Jesse, but I don't mean to interrupt, but the truth is Frankie might want to be alone for a while. And everything we're feeling from the anger, the tears, the pity, the unknown, -- trust me, that's the last thing Frankie wants surrounding him right now.
Zach: Hey. I heard from the doctors in New York.
Kendall: Are they coming?
Zach: No, no, they're not. They got operations -- three in a row. They're all urgent, and they can't get out of it, so --
Kendall: What are we going to do?
Zach: I don't know. I looked in on Ian, and I don't want them to operate either on his -- to keep going through this, and then the drug therapy. I don't want that. But this valve -- what if there's something wrong with it?
Kendall: Well, then we have to have them put something else in. I mean, just the same as if we went with a more traditional way.
Zach: What if we're not aware of it, if something goes wrong, and we're not aware of it?
Kendall: There are risks with whatever we choose, Zach. There are no good choices. Does this mean that you're willing to try Adam's new valve?
Zach: It doesn't matter what I think. There's no doctor to do the operation. David said no, and I'm not going to have Jake Martin do anything, not after what he did to you. So I don't think there's anyone that can change David's mind.
Adam: Uh -- ahem -- you and I need to talk.
David: I can't think of anything you and I would need to discuss.
Adam: Well, I want to make you a deal.
Adam: Your surgical implant of the Chandler valve in little Ian Slater.
David: Now, why would I use my expertise to make your company millions and advance a product that hasn't been fully researched?
Adam: I can get you plenty of research. And there's something else you might want.
David: I'm listening.
Adam: Actually, that was a question. But in addition to the additional research, there must be something that would make you willing to do the surgery. I must have something that you want from me as a quid pro quo.
David: Yes, as a matter of fact, there is, but I don't think you're going to like it one bit.
Jake: You forget something?
Amanda: Yeah. You. I guess I got so freaked about the baby, of what David was going to do. Every time I thought it out, I just kept coming to the same thing -- David taking my little boy away. So I ran. And then in the airport someone was watching our telenovela, and it made me realize how much I was going to miss you. And running away wasn't going to solve that. Nothing is going to solve it, not when I want to keep him.
Jake: All right, just back up for a second, because you're dead wrong about one little thing. We can solve anything together, because I think what we have is stronger than anything that David has over you.
Amanda: Is it really?
Jake: I love you. I just -- I'm so tired of pretending that I don't feel that. I just can't take it anymore. I love you. I love you. I just love you. I love you. I love you.
Randi: What if I just can't wait? What if I just can't sit here while my husband's going through hell halfway across the world?
Jesse: Randi, listen --
Taylor: Randi, they will call us. As soon as he lands in Germany and he does the preliminary, the doctor will call us, ok? Just wait for that call, and then we can make your travel arrangements. I promise, right?
Brot: Yes, yes, of course. And if you'd like, I can go with you, because I know how the military works. And Frankie may want someone there who has, you know, been down that road before.
Randi: Ok. We'd like that. That would mean a lot to us.
Randi: Both of us.
David: Zach, Kendall, I've changed my mind. If you can come to an agreement on using the new device, I will do the surgery.
Zach: What happened?
David: I re-examined all the research, and I've come to the conclusion that this is Ian's best hope. But I need you both onboard. I cannot go in there unless each of you are 100% behind this. Ok. I'll have an O.R. prepped. I know. I'll get him through it.
Erica: Krystal, how are you holding up?
Krystal: I'm fine.
Erica: Are you sure?
Krystal: Yes. Why? What is this all about?
Erica: Adam told me. I'll be honest, I kind of tricked it out of him. But I know what your secret is, and I know that Adam has been blackmailing you over it. And I must tell you, I think it's perfectly horrible of him to have done this. I am so sorry. Is there anything that I could do?
Gayle: It's bad enough that Erica Kane woman barrels her way in here, but for you to go off with her to --
Adam: Shut up, woman! You're hired help. Learn your place.
J.R.: Where have you been? You're supposed to stay here and rest.
Adam: Don't you start with me. I've been saving our company's butt.
J.R.: Well, we're going to need it. This operation's not happening.
Adam: Yes, it is.
Scott: What do you mean?
Adam: I just came from the hospital. They're prepping Ian Slater as we speak. Our valve is going to save a life.
J.R.: Who's doing the operation?
J.R.: Wait a second, he said that he wouldn't do it as long as -- what did you promise him?
Adam: This company needs a home run, something to keep the wolves at bay.
J.R.: What did you promise David Hayward?
Adam: I did what I had to do.
J.R.: You promised him Little Adam, didn't you? You gave Hayward my son.
