Episode #10095

Aidan: Mornin'. I brought breakfast. Muffins, sausage, extra cheese, and it's still warm.

Annie: I -- I can't eat. How can I eat?

Aidan: Doesn't look like you slept, either.

Annie: If I sleep, I will dream and If I dream, I can't. I'm afraid.

Aidan: Annie, I thought we spoke about this. I know you're afraid, but whether it's a dream or a nightmare facing it will help you.

Annie: I hurt someone else, Aidan. I murdered somebody. I know it.

J.R. Ok, well, give me a call if you hear anything else.

[Doorbell rings]

J.R.: Thanks for coming.

Tad: What's the emergency? Is it Little Adam?

Colby: If you have any word on Stuart Chandler, you'll call us? Thank you, Officer.

Tad: Your Uncle Stuart's missing?

J.R.: No actually it's Dad.

Colby: He was in a hospital using Uncle Stuart's name and he's gone, left, walked out and no one's seen him.

Tad: He was in a hospital. What's wrong with him?

J.R.: Who knows.

Colby: Dad's sick. What if we're too late and he's--

Erica: I'm here early on purpose.

Ryan: I know exactly why you're here Erica. You're here to keep me away from the hospital. Or away from Kendall.

David: Ian's heart rate is up, he's off the ventilator.

Zach: Ok.

David: His condition has improved enough to proceed with the surgery, if that's what you want.

Zach: If that's what we want? We gotta fix his heart. Yeah, that's what we want. What do you mean by that?

David: Before we jump to that decision, it's important that you fully understand the risks that your son will be facing.

Aidan: Just because you remember being in a bloody party dress doesn't make you a killer.

Annie: Aidan, I killed Richie and Di. I stabbed Erica Kane. I tried to kill Greenlee many, many times. You know I have it in me.

Aidan: No, we don't know that yet, all right? Not until you remember everything. I know it's scary, but this is the only way you're going to get better.

Annie: I thought I was getting better. And saner and stronger. Why do you even bother with me?

Aidan: I love you.

Annie: I don't want any more bad memories. I want to get out of here and go be with you and be happy and make good memories, but bad things keep happening because I am bad.

Aidan: Annie, you're not bad. All right? You've just been through a lot. And not just with Ryan. I mean, you grew up with that nasty brother of yours. And your parents didn't love you the way -- the way you should have been loved.

Annie: Lots of people have messed up childhoods, Aidan. They don't all take tire irons to their brothers' heads, or stab people, or threaten people.

Aidan: Listen, you coped, all right? The only way you knew how. And now you're healing. And these memories, as bad as they are, they're just another step.

Annie: Step, step to what? Step to freedom, or step to another padded cell?

Aidan: Let me look into it. See what I can dig up.

Annie: And what if you find something really horrible?

Aidan: Then we'll know. And then we'll go from there, ok?

Annie: Thank you.

Aidan: You need to eat your breakfast.

Annie: I am not evil. I am not a bad person.

Tori: Of course, you're not.

J.R.: So, after Dad collapsed, Erica had him admitted to a hospital in Philadelphia. They used Stuart's name so the cops couldn't find him.

Tad: But if he was in the hospital -- nobody has any idea what was wrong with him?

Colby: No.

J.R.: I just want to get him back in the hospital to find out what's wrong with him. And then we'll deal with the law. But will you help us?

[Doorbell chimes]

Colby: Maybe it's about Dad. It's you.

Barry: Ah, yes, it's me. Is your brother in? Oh, yes, uh, we have to talk.

J.R.: You know, now is not a good time, actually.

Barry: Chandler Enterprises is in trouble.

J.R.: It's always in trouble. We'll have to deal with this later.

Barry: If you'd return my calls, you'd know we don't have until later. You deal with this now or Chandler Enterprises is going to go under.

Erica: Well, since you already know why I'm here, I certainly hope you've come to the same decision.

Ryan: No, I'm going to the hospital, actually.

Erica: Ryan, don't. Give them some distance. Respect their privacy.

Ryan: Come on, Erica, you think this is going to get Kendall and Zach back together, and you want to make sure that I'm nowhere in sight.

Erica: That's exactly what I'm hoping.

Ryan: Look, I pray to God that Ian is going to be ok and I will do everything in my power to help, but I'm also going to make sure that Zach isn't using this to manipulate Kendall.

Erica: Ryan, their baby is sick.

Ryan: I know, and I know Ian is going to fight back and I know he's going to be ok. He's going to fight just like he's done all these other times. He's a very strong kid. But I am going to fight to make sure Kendall stays happy.

Erica: Do you hear yourself? Every other word you're saying is the word "fight." Is that how you see this, as some sort of a fight that you have to win?

Ryan: Well, Zach made it that way.

Erica: Zach is fighting for his wife. You're just angry because Kendall has decided to stay in the house with Zach.

Ryan: Yeah, actually, I am.

David: Ian's case has an additional element of risk in that he recently underwent a sternotomy to fix the hole in his heart. A second invasive procedure could open old adhesions or cause excessive bleeding. There are other complications that could arise from the anesthesia -- in post-op. There's always the chance of infection, respiratory problems.

Kendall: Are you trying to talk us out of the surgery?

David: No, I just want you to have all of the facts.

Zach: If he doesn't have the operation, he could die.

Kendall: And if he does, he could die.

David: I'll leave you to make your decision.

Kendall: What are we going to do?

David: Hey.

Krystal: What is it? Is it Ian?

David: His heart rate has improved a little.

Krystal: Well, with you watching over him all night, I'm sure it has.

David: Thank you.

Krystal: So how soon do you take him into surgery?

David: I don't want to operate on him.

Tori: I'm sorry I ran out on you the other night.

Annie: Well, that's all right. I mean, who wouldn't run?

Tori: No, I'm studying to be a therapist. I can't run out of the room every time one of my patients reveals something unsettling. Have you remembered anything else?

Annie: No. Oh, Aidan was here. He brought breakfast. You can have it.

Tori: Oh, I'm not hungry.

Annie: Yeah, me neither. Aidan says I have to face whatever this is if I'm ever going to get out of here.

Tori: He's right. Look, maybe it really is just a nightmare.

Annie: No, Tori, nightmares are scary, but then you wake up and they're over. This -- I wake up and I feel guilty.

[Aidan researches news from March 20, 1987 online]

Barry: Chandler Enterprises is almost out of cash. They've downgraded our credit rating.

J.R.: All right, well, then we're just going to have to do some damage control.

Barry: We have to unload these subsidiaries immediately. They're hemorrhaging red ink and taking Chandler down even faster.

J.R.: All right, all right. We'll dump these and, uh, take the losses. All the other decisions have to be made when my dad gets back.

Barry: We can't wait until Adam feels like gracing us with his presence. Set an emergency meeting with the board. Make the decisions that have to be made to save this company.

J.R.: I'll tell you what. Give me 24 hours to find my father, then I'll be in that boardroom, and I'll do what has to be done. So will you help us?

Tad: Well, it is kind of ironic. For years I've been wishing your father would disappear.

J.R.: Yeah, well, I've wanted to crate him off to another planet my entire life, but Little Adam loves him and Colby needs him and Chandler Enterprises needs him.

Tad: And you?

J.R.: And I need him, but just don't tell him that.

Colby: Will you help us?

Tad: Suddenly I have an urge for a cheesesteak.

Colby: Let's go.

J.R.: No, wait, wait. You stay here just in case Dad calls or comes back.

Colby: You'll call me the second you know anything?

J.R.: Of course.

Tad: We'll find him.

Colby: You better.

Krystal: You have to operate. The valve in Ian's heart needs to be fixed.

David: No, they're going to have to get another doctor.

Krystal: You're the best.

David: Krystal, he's a baby. I haven't performed pediatric surgery in years, not since...

Krystal: Leora.

David: She was so tiny, defenseless. Joe convinced Anna that the surgery had to be performed, and I fought so hard to stop it. She died right there on the operating table as a result of the anesthesia. That's where she gave her last breath. There was nothing I could do. Just accept that she was gone.

Erica: Ryan, Zach had nothing to do with the baby's condition, with Ian's being in the hospital.

Ryan: I realize that. But we're talking about a guy who blew himself up to get what he wanted. He shot Josh, Erica, to get what he wanted. He does whatever he needs to do to get what he wants over and over and over again. I mean, come on, honestly, what makes you think that he wouldn't use his own children to get

Kendall back?

Erica: Well, I've never -- I've never seen him use his children. He's been there every step of the way for Ian. He protected Spike even before the child was born.

Ryan: Before my son was born.

Erica: And he wants to make sure that both children have their mother.

Ryan: The kids will have their mother, believe me.

Erica: Boy, you are just not backing down at all, are you?

Ryan: I love her, Erica, ok? I love Kendall.

Erica: Do you, Ryan? Is it really love? Or is it just the case of it being the perfect storm? Because you lost Greenlee and because Kendall is frustrated?

Ryan: The love has always been there. Wow. You know, I remember when you used to push for Kendall and I to get back together. You used to say we were the perfect couple.

Erica: I remember that, too. But that was before Zach. Look, your perfect love with Kendall didn't even make it down the aisle before you self-destructed. And you fell madly in love with Greenlee. But by this time, Kendall and Zach have built a life together. They have a family. They have a sick baby. They really need each other right now. Please, Ryan. Honor that, respect that. This is not the time to stake a claim. Let Kendall be with her son and her husband.

Kendall: What kind of choice is this? We agree to do the surgery, he could die. We don't, he could die. What are we supposed to do? How are we supposed to do this? I mean, we're his parents. We're supposed to be able to help him, to help our son, to save him, to protect him.

Zach: Ian wasn't supposed to survive the first week. Hell, the first day. But he's here. I remember the first time I got to hold him. I put him up against my chest. He was so tiny and I could feel his heart beating, strong and steady. That's when I knew he was going to be ok. Just like now. Strong and steady. He's going to be ok.

Tori: That's right, like last time. Close your eyes, clear your mind.

Annie: I can't do it.

Tori: Look, Annie, I'm here. You won't be alone. You can do this. Aidan would want you to.

Annie: Oh, God.

Tori: You're doing great. Just relax. Let the memories come.

Girl: Who is it? Who's there?

Boy: What are you doing back down here, Annie?

Young Annie: Go away, leave me alone.

Boy: You forgot something.

Young Annie: I don't want it.

Boy: Yeah, you do.

[Young Richie holds up a bloody baseball bat]

Annie: Oh, my God.

Tori: Annie, Annie, I'm here. I'm here. What happened? Did you remember something?

[Aidan reads a story about a missing 7-year-old girl from Glen View named Tori Atherton.]

Erica: I don't want us to fight, Ryan.

Ryan: Well, then respect my decision.

Erica: I've always respected your decisions.

Ryan: Really? How about my decision to marry Greenlee? I mean, you hated her.

Erica: Ok, Greenlee and I had our problems, but she made you happy. And now she's gone and you're lost and you don't want to be alone.

Ryan: Oh, stop analyzing me, please, stop analyzing --

Erica: Look, I know you have feelings for Kendall. You have a child together. You have a history, and it's only natural that you would turn to each other. Look, these are just terrible, terrible times all around. All I'm asking is that -- is that you behave wisely. Don't make me the enemy, Ryan. I care for you so much.

Krystal: Leora, Babe, how does anybody survive losing two children?

David: It felt like someone cracked my chest open and ripped my heart out. I just put one foot in front of the other and kept reminding myself to breathe every once in awhile so people would at least think I was still alive.

Krystal: And you hold on even tighter to the other children in your life.

David: As I will do with our child.

Krystal: That's why you can do this surgery, because you care so much. You know what it's like to lose a child. You're not going to let that happen to Kendall and Zach.

David: Every second I have my hands in Ian's chest, I will be thinking about Leora. One tremor, one moment of doubt, and I can kill this boy.

Krystal: Leora's death was not your fault. She was too small for the surgery. She was too weak. Ian, he's older, he's a strong little boy. He's survived plenty already.

David: No, they're going to have to get another doctor. I can't do it.

Krystal: You couldn't save Leora and you couldn't save Babe, but you can save this child. You can work your magic and put this baby back in his parents' arms.

Kendall: When he had the brain hemorrhage, I wasn't there.

Zach: Kendall --

Kendall: No -- his heart stops, I'm not there.

Zach: Well, you're here now.

Kendall: That hemorrhage and that surgery, I was so afraid I'd lose him. I remember I would sit next to his incubator and I would imagine Ian saying his first word and starting his first day at school, riding a bike for the first time, reading a book to himself, playing baseball with his dad --

Zach: Baseball? What's wrong with hockey?

Kendall: It's too dangerous. I saw Ian go to high school, get his driver's license, go to college. And I talked to him. Remember that, sweet boy? I talked to you. I told you the surgery would work. And I told you that everything would be ok and not to be afraid because we all had each other.

Kendall: I think he'll be a traveler. After college, he'll go to all these really weird places, call us and tell us he's ok, maybe tell us that he met a girl.

Zach: I'm going to go find David.

Doctor: Yes, Stuart Chandler is my patient.

J.R.: Well, then how the hell could you lose him?

Tad: My stepson's just a little concerned because we can't believe he just got up and walked out of the hospital and nobody noticed him.

Doctor: I was as shocked as you. Please.

Tad: Thank you. Do you have any idea what was wrong with Stuart?

Doctor: We've conducted a full panel of tests, but there's still no concrete diagnosis.

J.R.: Oh. Is there anything that you and this hospital do right?

Tad: We're just worried because Adam -- Stuart has a history of strokes.

Doctor: We've ruled that out. We've also ruled out the possibility his condition was brought on by epilepsy, tumors, abnormal blood vessel formation --

J.R.: Is there anything you've ruled in?

Tad: Can you tell us anything about his condition, his behavior? It might give us a clue as to where we can start looking for him.

Doctor: Yes. Mr. Chandler could be --

Tad: Difficult?

Doctor: Impatient, arrogant, demanding. He had more than one of our nurses in tears.

J.R.: Sounds like he was feeling pretty good to me.

Tad: That's what it sounds like.

Doctor: But that said, at times he almost completely shut down. He wouldn't talk. He just stared at us. Now it wasn't catatonia. He just wouldn't talk.

Tad: Any idea why?

Doctor: I suspect a mood disorder.

J.R.: So you lost him before you could do any further tests?

Doctor: Look, I urged him to speak to a psychiatrist, but he refused.

J.R.: So, my fath -- Uncle Stuart is out there somewhere, suffering from who knows what.

[Pager beeps]

Doctor: I'm sorry, guys. I have to go. I hope you find Mr. Chandler soon. He should not be in the streets in his condition.

J.R.: Yeah, well, whose fault is that?

Tad: Would you just keep calm?

J.R.: Well, what now?

Tad: Unbelievable.

Man: Are you Chandler's family?

J.R.: Yeah, we are. You know him?

Man: Well, we've shared a few waiting rooms together.

Tad: Uh-huh.

J.R.: Do you know where he is?

Man: I might be able to help, but that's going to cost you.

Aidan: Damn. This is Tori, huh?

Tori: No; it's all right. I'm here. You're all right. Whatever it was, right now you're safe.

Annie: I remembered more. I was in the cellar, and there was a little boy.

Tori: Who was it?

Annie: I don't know. I don't -- I don't know. I couldn't see him, but there was a flashlight, and he was flashing it in my eyes. And he handed me a baseball bat.

Tori: A baseball bat.

Annie: He said that I forgot it. There was blood on it. There was blood on the bat. There was blood on the bat and there was blood on my hands. What did I do?

Tori: You don't know that you did any--

Annie: Yes, I did. I can feel that I did something.

Tori: The boy, could it have been Richie?

Annie: Yeah. Yeah, it was him. It was Richie's voice. That means that all along he knew. Richie knew that I killed someone.

Ryan: I know you care. And I care about you, too. I just -- I need -- I need a little time.

Erica: I understand.

Ryan: No matter what decision I make?

Erica: Well, I'm hoping you make the right decision.

[Phone rings]

Erica: Kendall? Is it Ian? How is he?

Kendall: His heart rate is up.

Erica: Oh, thank God.

Kendall: We've decided to tell David to go ahead with the surgery.

Erica: Ok, all right, I'll be right there.

Ryan: Is he better?

Erica: He's well enough for surgery.

Ryan: Oh, that's great. He's going to pull through. I know he is. Erica, I appreciate your friendship. It means a lot to me. But I'm not letting Kendall go.

[Door closing]

Kendall: We've made a decision, David. We would like for you to do the operation.

Zach: Is there a problem?

David: We'll get Ian prepped. We'll take care of your son. I'm going to do my best work.

Kendall: Thank you.

Krystal: I'll be sending up prayers.

David: I'll let you see him soon. Cynthia, assemble the cardiac team and the pump techs for a pediatric valve repair.

J.R.: Now wait a second here. You want us to pay you?

Man: Recession's on. The 401(k)'s in the dumper. Retirement's a bitch. 500.

Tad: How do we know you're for real?

Man: Silver hair. Like flint when he's pissed. Huh?

Tad: Oh, let me see what I got. What have you got? I got... 95, I've got 95. What do you have?

J.R.: I got a hundred.

Tad: Couple a hundred do it?

Man: Friggin' economic downturn. Phil.

Tad: As in Philadelphia?

Phil: I was born Lucius, all right? That's enough said.

J.R.: What can you tell me about my dad?

Phil: Your father? He never said anything about a kid.

Tad: It's all right. Just tell us what you know about Stuart Chandler and how you know him.

Phil: Oh, I got this condition. I mean, at my age, who doesn't? I've been in and out of this zoo they call a hospital. And I see Stuart, and he looks kind of interesting. I'm curious. We talked once in a while.

Tad: About what?

Phil: Well, that was up to Stuart. I mean, some days he acted like he was president of his own stinking country. Other days it was like he was stoned or something. I mean, he hardly said a word. But, boy, could he work the lead. I mean, even on those days. He drew. You had to know that. You're his kid.

J.R.: He drew?

Phil: Same woman every day, over and over again. Here.

Tad: It's Erica.

Phil: Oh, hell, no. That's -- he said it's Lottie. Are you sure you two know this guy?

Tad: All right, it's just, uh --

J.R.: Dad's dead sister.

[Phone rings]

J.R.: Colby, have you heard anything?

Colby: I don't know what's going on, but somebody got onto the property and stole Dad's car.

Erica: Oh, Krystal, has the surgery started yet?

Krystal: Any minute. Erica? I just want you to know that I am praying for little Ian.

Erica: Oh, thank you. David is the best.

Kendall: You're a very lucky little boy. You're going to have the same doctor I had. And he is very good at fixing hearts.

Zach: Your mom is right. You're going to hit a homerun. That's baseball talk. I know you don't like hockey. Too dangerous.

Kendall: I'll be right back.

Erica: How is he doing?

Kendall: I think he's going to make it, Mom. I really do. I can feel it.

Erica: Of course, he is. Of course, he's going to make it. So are you and Zach.

Kendall: Meaning?

Erica: I saw Ryan.

Kendall: And you told him to back away?

Erica: Yes, I did.

Kendall: I'm going to go see my boy.

[Phone ringing]

Erica: Hello. Who is this?

[Door opening]

Emma: Daddy.

Ryan: Hey, guys. Hi. How are you? Did you have fun?

Emma: We drew pictures. Spike made a card for Ian.

Ryan: Oh, he did, huh?

Spike: Daddy, Daddy, Daddy.

Ryan: Let me see. That's sweet. Hey, boo, come over here. Come over here. It's such a nice card. It's so nice. I know you really miss your little brother. I know you do. But don't worry. He's going to be back in the sand box in no time. I promise.

Emma: Daddy, but the card will make Ian feel better. He has to have to have the card now.

Annie: All my life I told myself Richie was the bad one. When we were kids he would kill baby frogs, try to hurt the neighbor's cat. Meanwhile, the whole time, I was the bad guy. I killed somebody.

Tori: You don't know that.

Annie: It's the only thing that makes sense. And Richie knew it. No wonder he always said I was the evil one.

Tori: We still don't know this is real. Do you remember who you think you killed?

Annie: I can't even picture a face. Hi.

Aidan: Hey.

Annie: I'm glad you're here. I've been remembering a lot of things. Tori's been helping me remember.

Aidan: Where did Tori go?

Annie: She's right here. I'm so glad you guys get to finally meet. Tori's really been helping me a lot. I don't know how I can thank you.

Colby: What did you find out about Dad?

J.R.: Nothing that makes any sense.

Tad: Tell us about the car.

Colby: Security called after whoever stole it went blasting out the gate.

J.R.: Do you think it could've been Adam?

Tad: Be a hell of a stretch.

J.R.: Well, he's drawing pictures of Erica and calling her Lottie. Nothing's a stretch at this point.

Colby: What?

[Doorbell chiming]

Officer: Mr. Chandler?

J.R.: Yeah. Did you find my father's car?

Officer: The car is wrapped around a tree.

Colby: Oh, my God.

J.R.: Was my father inside?

Officer: No, sir. The car was abandoned.

Erica: My God. Adam. You're supposed to be in the hospital. What are you doing here?

[Adam grabs Erica and kisses her passionately]

David: We're ready to go.

Kendall: Hey. Mom and Daddy love you very much. All right? We're going to be right here. So you come back to us as quick as you can.

Zach: You heard her. Come on. We made the right decision.

[Kendall turns around and sees Ryan standing at the end of the hall]
