Jesse: Hey, beautiful.
Angie: Hey, oh, I like this front door service at this place.
Jesse: How was your day?
Angie: Bittersweet. The staff meeting turned into an impromptu tribute to Julia with everybody expressing their personal thoughts and memories of her. It was very lovely, but very, very sad. How are you?
Jesse: Anxious to talk to you.
Jesse: About the police chief position.
Angie: Oh, God, I thought we were done with that. Come on, you promised me, Jesse. No more police work.
Jesse: Yeah, I did promise you. And I can't break my promise to you.
Jesse: But I'd like to plead my case for an amendment on that promise. Because I'd really like to take that job, Angela.
Carmen: They did say she was just a temporary replacement.
Erica: You don't understand, Carmen. Everyone in show business is temporary, including those thankless weasels who put that air-headed bimbo in my chair in "New Beginnings."
Carmen: But you're Erica Kane. You're irreplaceable.
Erica: Yeah, as long as I'm on camera. Out of sight, out of mind. They may love you, but if you're not there, they don't -- I mean, as long as I'm in here, and I'm not in their living rooms, then it is much easier for them to accept someone new. No, no, this is a big problem.
Carmen: Then there's only one thing we can do. We got to bust out of here.
Annie: I'm ovulating. Hi, well, this is a nice surprise.
Ryan: Yeah --
Annie: Perfect timing, I was just finishing out for the day.
Ryan: Oh, I'm glad I caught you. I want to tell you --
Annie: Well, I have something to tell you. I have arranged for Emma to spend the night at Kathy's, so I was thinking we could do a real date night, not feel rushed, go to that Italian restaurant we pass by, and then afterwards we will have the whole penthouse to ourselves.
Ryan: That sounds so good, it does. But the reason that I want --
Greenlee: Bitch was aiming right for my face.
Ryan: Greenlee, what happened to you? Are you ok?
Richie: What are you doing, J.R.?
J.R.: I told you. I told you I keep my promises. And I always like make good on them. Yeah, oh, yeah. Here we go. Let me introduce you to the last day of your life.
Tad: Dixie. Is this real? Are you really here?
Dixie: Yes, Tad, I'm really here.
Tad: I have missed you so.
Dixie: No, no, no, no. Don't move. You've had so much pain, there's no need for any more.
Tad: What's that supposed to mean? Oh, Lord, you mean like I've --
Dixie: No. Tad, you're very much alive, and you're going to stay that way.
Dixie: Come here. Now close your eyes.
Tad: No, mm-mmm, no. No, I don't want to stop staring at you. Well, how do I know that if I open my eyes again, you won't be gone?
Dixie: Tad, don't worry, honey. I'm with you now. That's all that matters. Come on.
Dixie: Now close your eyes.
Tad: Where are we?
Dixie: We're in a place where we can make a wish.
Jesse: Baby, I know you don't want me out in the field again, but this is different.
Angie: No, it's not.
Jesse: It's a desk job, all right? Sitting behind a desk, chance to be a cop again, only without the danger. Chance to be a leader, chance to do something that I know I'm really good at.
Angie: Jesse, you and I both know that you would stay out of the field long enough to sort your paper clips and then you'd find all sorts of reasons to be out there again and putting your life on the line. It's in your blood, you can't deny it. Taking that job would be putting your foot in that door again, and I don't have the courage or the strength to sign up for that.
Erica: No one, no one is going to bust out of here, ok? Even if I could, it would pretty much guarantee that the only TV show that I would ever host again would be called "This Old Cell Block." Now, look, I appreciate your enthusiasm in trying to help me. I really do, but I'm just going to have to do my time. I'm going to have to hope that I can restart my TV career once I get out of here. I mean, even if it means saying goodbye to "New Beginnings."
Carmen: How could you say that? You are "New Beginnings."
Erica: You're very sweet. Sometimes a person just has to accept the fact that it's time to say goodbye to a chapter in their life and just move on.
Carmen: No, I'm not going to let you do that. Whatever happened to "the show must go on"?
Erica: About two feet of cinder block wall. And about a half a dozen towers with armed guards.
Carmen: You are "New Beginnings'" one and only superstar, and wherever you are, so is the show. And I'm going to prove it to you.
Ryan: It's going to be ok, though. You've just got to keep ice on that as long as possible. Let me see that. Do you mind getting some more ice?
Ryan: Ok, thanks.
Greenlee: Kendall did this on purpose.
Ryan: Now, how do you know that?
Greenlee: She admitted it.
Ryan: But that doesn't make any sense. Isn't she trying to make peace with you?
Greenlee: Yeah, well, I might have pushed a few of her buttons.
Ryan: No, you?
Greenlee: I couldn't help it.
Ryan: What did you do?
Greenlee: I kind of teased her about someone I slept with.
Ryan: Like someone not Aidan?
Greenlee: Right, I let her think it was someone she was close to.
Ryan: You let her think that it was Zach and it wasn't? Classy.
Greenlee: I know. It was childish and stupid and spiteful. All my finer instincts took over. And the worst part was, I did it in front of Zach and Aidan.
Ryan: You're a masochist, you know that?
Greenlee: Hey, my lips bypass my brain sometimes.
Annie: Here, put this back on your face.
Greenlee: Thanks. So, how about you guys? You guys doing ok?
Ryan: Yeah, yeah, we're good --
Annie: We're great, actually. I was just telling Ryan we have the penthouse to ourselves tonight for some together time.
Ryan: Which brings me to the reason I came here, actually. Unfortunately, I can't tonight. I've got to go out of town, but I'm going to be back tomorrow.
Annie: No, no, you can't do this. You can't leave me, Ryan, not tonight.
J.R.: See I've done some very careful research on this stuff. Most of it is just an inhibitor agent for the most important ingredient, potassium cyanide. Now, you might ask yourself there, J.R., why did you dilute it? Probably because I wanted a more lingering, agonizing death.
Richie: Why are you doing this, J.R.?
J.R.: You've been a very busy guy, haven't you?
Richie: Yeah, I try.
J.R.: Yeah, you've gotten away with a few things you think you have. But I'd put good money on the fact that you're the one who set me up the night Zach Slater got hit by my car.
Richie: Now you're just being paranoid.
J.R.: Ok, why don't we just stick with the facts? Like the fact that I know that you drugged and kidnapped me, set me up with booze and a hooker in order to make me look bad in front of Babe. Now, you crossed a line on that one, Richie.
Richie: I have no idea what the hell you're talking --
J.R.: Oh, don't even try it, ok? Because Babe and I cornered your little hooker friend. Yeah, she told me everything you did to me.
Richie: Ok, ok, maybe I made a few mistakes, all right? So, why don't we start talking about how I can make it up to you?
J.R.: Oh, I already have, Richie.
J.R.: Yeah, and I'm glad that you came clean like this. You're going to get a point for that. And do you know what I'm going to do for you? I'm going to make your death just as clean and simple as possible.
Ryan: Hey, it's just for one night and it's actually really, really important.
Annie: I don't care what the reason is, Ryan. This isn't fair. I arranged for a whole evening for us.
Ryan: I know, I know, and I'm really sorry, but I have an appointment early in New York tomorrow morning. And this, like I said, it's really, really important. The appointment was so incredibly hard for me to make. This is a research program that Jake Martin set me up with, and this is something that they're stimulating memory centers in the brain by surgically inserting electrodes. Anyway, the point is, this could be the answer that we've been waiting for.
Annie: I think this is a big mistake.
Greenlee: I don't understand. Annie, why are you fighting this? I mean if this is a way for Ryan to regain his memory back, isn't that what you want? More than anything?
Tad: That's our star. Holy cow, I've never seen it so bright.
Dixie: Not since those first wishes we made, remember? When we found it on the same night even though we were apart.
Tad: Remember, how could I forget? Christmas Eve, Memorial Park, I was so lonely I thought I was going to fall apart. That was the first time I saw it. I figured, well, got nothing to lose, why not make a wish? I wished for all the confusion to go away, for love and understanding. Who am I kidding? I basically wished for you.
Dixie: And I was so close. Same night, in the same park, wishing on the same star. I thought I lost you forever, but then I wished to have you back. And there you were. You know, I've been hearing them, Tad. All the wishes that you've been making since I've been gone.
Tad: Yeah? Hmm, well, I guess you know that they've come true. All of them. I got her back. Kate's home. Somehow, someway, you've come back to me.
Angie: Jesse, I understand that this isn't easy. I know how much being a cop meant to you.
Jesse: Means to me.
Angie: Yeah. We've already lost 20 years because of it.
Jesse: Angela, if you couldn't be a doctor anymore, you really think there is something else in your life that you'd want to do? I mean, that holds the same passion for you? I don't think so, you know? And I don't think there's anything that I would want to do with my life other than being a cop. I'm a cop. It's who I am.
Richie: Don't do this, man, ok? I can go to the cops, all right? I can tell them that I set you up.
J.R.: Ok, well, let me just think about this. So, I let you go to the cops voluntarily and you tell them that you were the bad guy behind all of this?
J.R.: Yeah. See, I just don't think you're going to follow through with that, Richie. See, I still can't get over this whole kidnapping thing. No, I'm sorry. There's only one way for you to pay.
Richie: Look, man, ok? I would have never kidnapped you if I knew you were going to give me the bone marrow. I promise, all right? Just stop with the needle. Ok.
J.R.: You kidnapped me for my bone marrow? You miserable son of a bitch!
Annie: Of course I want Ryan's memory back, but it's starting to come back on its own now.
Ryan: Slowly, bits and pieces.
Annie: So, what, you need to rush off for some experimental procedure where they drill holes in your head and stick your brain with electrodes?
Ryan: Hold it, you're making it sound a lot more radical than it really is. All I'm doing here is I'm gathering information, ok? And if this could speed up the process a little bit, then I want to get as much information as I can, as quickly as possible.
Greenlee: Amen to that. I think it's fantastic that you found something that might actually work.
Annie: Ok, but what I'm saying is I don't know why you have to do it now. Like, why do you need to leave tonight?
Ryan: Because it took a lot of pull to get to see this guy. I don't want to back out now. I don't know when I'm going to be able to see him again.
Greenlee: Well, then you have to go for it. There's no question.
Annie: Damn it, Greenlee. When are you going to butt the hell out of our marriage?
Carmen: Ok, you can look now. Live from Hawthorn Federal Detention Center, it's "New Beginnings" starring Erica Kane.
[Cheers and applause]
Carmen: Ok, well, have a seat up here. It's your show, after all.
Erica: Carmen, this is just too much.
Carmen: Sit, sit, sit.
Prisoner: We all wanted to thank you for everything you made possible for us.
Carmen: For those of you who don't know, Erica has helped these three women here on stage have a new beginning of some kind. Sue here hasn't seen her daughter in months because her ex-husband moved to Reno.
Sue: Loser ex-husband.
Carmen: Erica convinced her loser ex-husband to let her mother and little girl fly back here. And she got the airline and a hotel chain to donate travel and room for them to stay.
[Cheers and applause]
Sue: And because of that, I get to see my little girl every couple of weeks. Thanks, Erica, thank you.
Carmen: Erica has also been able to get a company named Cambias to donate new computers to the prison library. And Miss Rosalie here now knows how to design web pages.
[Cheers and applause]
Rosalie: W-w-w dot way to go, Erica.
Carmen: Many of you have your own stories, so I think it's time we let Erica know how we feel about all that she's done for us.
[Cheers and applause]
Erica: Thank you, thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you.
Dixie: You found our little girl.
Tad: You're responsible, though, aren't you? Come on, admit it. Come on, please. I mean, Adam wasn't going crazy. He actually did see you. You're the only reason he finally admitted it to me.
Dixie: Just talk to me about Kate. Come on, just tell me. Tell me everything.
Tad: Oh, honey, she's so fine. She's like a miracle. She's magic, you know? She looks so much like you. She's got your eyes, you know, but there's just the tiniest bit of Martin twinkle in there. Oh, yeah, she's going to be a whole mess of fun.
Tad: I'm so worried about her. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to say. She's so vulnerable, you know? She's already been through so much. She's lost so much she lost her adoptive parents and now Julia.
Dixie: But she'll be alright now. She has you.
Tad: I want her to have you, too. I want her to know you. I want you to be there for her.
Dixie: I'll always be there for Kate in her heart. But you get to be there as her best friend and the greatest teacher that she'll ever have. She's the most blessed little girl in the world to have you for a father.
Tad: You're going to have to go away again, aren't you?
Dixie: Let's not talk about it. I'm here now. I'm here now, ok? Let's just be here now. Do something for me, will you? Do me a favor.
Dixie: Make me laugh.
Greenlee: Ah, whoa. Sorry. Didn't mean to step into the crossfire. I'll just be over there, putting a gallon of foundation on my face.
Ryan: Hey. What's going on? I mean, seriously, why did you jump down her throat like that? I didn't -- since when do you not want me to get my memory back?
Annie: I do. Of course, I want that. I'm just -- I'm really stressed out, and I don't feel well.
Ryan: Are you still taking those B-12 shots?
Annie: Well, the doctor said I needed to take it easy. He said that the vitamin shots aren't going to be the whole answer. I was just -- I was really looking forward to us spending an evening together, and I made all these arrangements, and I thought maybe it would help destress me. And I'm sorry, I'm sorry that I'm being selfish. I was just...
Ryan: Hey. I -- it's ok. And I didn't know how important this was to you, ok? I really didn't. And I'll just postpone New York, ok?
Ryan: All right?
Annie: Ok. Please don't be angry at me. I just really wanted to be with you tonight.
J.R.: So that was what this kidnapping was about, huh? To steal my bone marrow?
Richie: Damn it, I was dying. You were my only match, and I knew you'd never give it to me voluntarily, so... you were my only chance to survive, and I took it, all right? If I had a chance to do it over again, I promise --
J.R.: You don't get to do it over again, Richie. You're fresh out.
J.R.: So, you're the reason why I've gotten sick. It wasn't because of the hooker, huh? You gave it to me because you stuck me with a dirty needle.
Richie: Sorry, I didn't know anything about it.
J.R.: You risked my life and my family's life to save your sorry ass?
Richie: What would you have done?
J.R.: This just makes the whole thing easier, doesn't it? Hmm? See, actually, you owe me for your life. So I'm just here to collect a debt.
Carmen: So, you see what I mean? They can hire all the big, bouncy boneheads they want, but we've got the real "New Beginnings" show right here, right now.
Erica: Carmen, really, what you organized here today, this was really special of you. Thank you.
Carmen: I just wish there was a way to show the world.
Erica: What a wonderful idea.
Tad: Fertility mask, you know? It's obviously very, very expensive, you know. It's amazing to look at, bright colors and stuff, big eyes. And I look at the letter, I open the letter, it says it's from Jamie, says, "Pop, happy birthday." This is a very, very special gift. It is a tribal life mask and it's a big deal. It's a big deal. It's hand-carved, you know, by some special wood, by a shaman or something like that. It is literally a life mask, you know? So if you -- supposedly if you wear it, you'll look and feel, you know, 20 years younger. So I'm feeling, eh, why not?
Dixie: Oh, no.
Tad: Oh, yeah. Ah, the chum was in the water, baby. So I strapped this sucker on. I'm hanging out half an hour cleaning stuff, watching television, feeling really good about myself, nothing. Finally I put it aside, you know. Kept watching TV, fell asleep. Next morning I woke up and I figured, you know, I'd go shower and shave, get ready for work. I go in there, look in the mirror, and the color of berry, like blue. No, again, like it is like ridiculously blue. I looked like this crazed raccoon. So I realized it's an ancient joke mask. It's a gag, right? So, it took me an hour to get Jamie on the phone just to tell him I'm going to kill him when he comes back, and he starts to laugh. And I mean, he laughed so hard, he starts to cry. As far as I know, he's still laughing to this day. Yeah, it wasn't very funny at the time. I had to run around for three days looking like a Smurf. Turns out it's a dye that can't wash off. You have to -- it's tough. You have to wait. It has to wear off, right? I figure about the fertility thing, it's ok. I've still got it. It's now hanging on the wall, but that's ok. So tell me about -- where you are.
Tad: Where you are, what's it like?
Dixie: Oh. It's, um, uh, it's heaven. Yeah, well, there's no pain, there's no sorrow, there's no regret. You feel as big as the universe and so close to God.
Tad: Do you know people? I mean, do you recognize people that you've lived?
Dixie: Oh, yeah, my mom was there for me.
Dixie: She's so happy. And do you know who else I saw? You would not even believe it. I felt like I knew her from everything that you told me about her. Your Grandma Kate.
Tad: You're kidding.
Dixie: Oh, she's wonderful. She's such a love, and she's so thrilled about her great granddaughter. And she's looking after you, you know?
Tad: She is?
Dixie: Oh, you betcha.
Dixie: She needs to. Tad, you have to stay and raise our daughter. You have to look after J.R. and Jamie and Little Jenny. You have a long life in front of you. I have to go back, and I need you to let me go this time. I need to know that you're going to live a long life on earth and be happy.
Tad: I can't do it. I've tried. I can't let you go.
Richie: Look, I will disappear. I will get 1,000 miles away from Babe. I won't come anywhere near her. Not this town, not Babe, nobody. Just stop.
J.R.: Yeah, you mean that, huh?
Richie: Yes. They won't know where I went, not Babe, not Annie, no one. Ok?
J.R.: You see, the problem is I just don't believe you.
Richie: No, no!
Angie: I know what it's like to be passionate about your work.
Jesse: I know you do, baby.
Angie: But there's a line that has to be drawn. I would never give up my family for my work, and I'm scared to death that's what's going to happen, that we'll lose you again.
Jesse: You are not going to lose me again.
Angie: Well, now you're making promises that you can't possibly guarantee. That's what I heard before. Every morning that you walked out that door, I'd say goodbye and my gut would twist. I'd be scared all day long until you came home again. And then the day finally came when you didn't come back, when I thought I saw you die in that hospital, and I lived with that for 20 years.
Jesse: Baby --
Angie: And I can't do it again. I can't ask my family to. Frankie just went through his own hell in Iraq. Cassandra nearly saw her mother shot. We need time to feel safe.
Jesse: Shh, shh, shh.
Angie: Don't you get it?
Jesse: Come here, come here. I'm sorry, baby. I'm sorry.
Tad: Dixie, please. Please not now, please don't leave me.
Dixie: Oh, honey, it's not my choice. It's not your choice, and it's not mine. Deep inside, you know that. There are rules. We all have our time, and it simply isn't your time. And you know why.
Tad: Because of Kate.
Dixie: Yes. And Jenny. Kate has been through so much. Both your daughters need the special love that only their father can give them.
Tad: What about together forever?
Dixie: Forever is a very long time. You still have a long life ahead of you, but in the grand scheme of things, it will seem like the blink of an eye.
Tad: That's still too long, as far as I'm concerned, without you.
Dixie: You and I, we're soul mates. That's why we fell in love so fast. That's why we find each other every time we're separated. It's why we wish on the same star. It's why we'll always be together, forever. Come on, tell me you understand.
Tad: I have to let you go. I just wish... I wish I could touch you. I wish I could touch you one last time.
Dixie: You can.
Jesse: I'm going to call Sam Woods and tell him I'm not going to take the job.
Angie: I'm sorry, Jesse. I wish I could feel differently.
Jesse: I understand.
Erica: Governor Brooks? Hi. Thank you so much for taking my call. Oh, that's very sweet of you. Well, listen, I'm not going to take much of your time, but I just wanted to tell you about my new television show. Oh, no, not when I get out. I mean right now. It's called "New Beginnings: Behind Bars."
Annie: I was thinking maybe we should order in instead of going out. Maybe rent a movie or something.
Ryan: Ok, I will see you at home later.
Annie: Ok, great. Bye.
[Elevator opens and closes]
Greenlee: Sorry. I didn't mean to stir things up between you guys.
Ryan: You have nothing to apologize about at all, really. I don't really -- she's acting a little --
Greenlee: Needy? Well, maybe your night of alone time will help.
Ryan: Can you leave work, like, right now?
Greenlee: Sure. I'm the boss. What's up?
Ryan: I was just thinking that maybe we should take that motorcycle ride you were talking about.
Ryan: Yeah, right now.
Greenlee: I'm in.
J.R.: You see this? Look, I've got the antidote right here. And you know what? I may even save your lame excuse of a life if you admit to everything you did on a tape recording, and you sign a written confession. All right? Now, why don't we start with the kidnapping? Hey, hey. Knock it off. I said, knock it off.
Dixie: When your time does come, you'll understand. Just know that you're free now to move on, to live your life, to love again.
Tad: Goodbye, Dixie.
>> On the next "All My Children" --
J.R.: That's enough, Richie, all right? I said, stop it.
J.R.: Come on, Novak, don't you go dying on me.
Ryan (to Greenlee): I'm really lucky to have you in my life.
Kendall (to Zach): Greenlee's suing me.
