Zach: I have two more in me before my head's going to explode.

Kendall: Ok, then take a break.

Zach: How are you doing? You all right?

Kendall: Ah. Honest answer, I don't know, Zach. I think that maybe we should just hold off on Spike's birthday party. I mean, Greenlee hates me. Tad's in the hospital. And Julia -- I still can't believe that it happened.

Zach: Well, we're here. You, me, Ian, Spike, we're your family.

Kendall: I know.

Zach: Ok. Hold on to that. Hold on to me.

Kendall: I will hold on to you.

Zach: Come on.

Jesse: It's going to be ok, baby.

Angie: It's not ok, Jesse. How can it be ok?

J.R.: Oh, that's good, Dad. Are you going to die on me, too?

Adam: Is that a request?

J.R.: I just want to know, because I want to know how many funerals I'm going to be attending this year. I might need to buy a new suit.

Adam: No one else is dying, J.R.

J.R.: Why don't you tell that to Tad? Oh, that's right, because he's unconscious, fighting for his life right now.

Adam: J.R., I know you're scared. But he will pull through.

J.R.: Will you do me a favor? Will you quit pretending like you care? I'm going to go check on the kids. Kathy's already lost both of her parents. No one should have to go through that twice.

Krystal: I don't care what you have to do, Tad Martin. You hear me? You hold on. And you hold on tight.

Tad: You said we could have another chance. How?

Dixie: Come with me, and I'll show you. We can start over, Tad.

Tad: Start over? Over from when?

Dixie: Seven years ago. Tad, we're going to have a baby.

Tad: Did I miss something?

Dixie: Yes, we both did.

Tad: Where's the hospital? What is this place?

Dixie: This place is our second chance. And we're going to get it right this time.

Tad: I don't understand.

Dixie: Seven years ago, I gave birth to our child. And I didn't tell you because I got scared.

Tad: I didn't want you to risk your life. Oh, Dixie, you should have told me.

Dixie: Oh, I know. I should have had faith in you and in us. I just couldn't find it. But I have faith now. Help me. Let's bring a child into this world.

Tad: A child? No, no, wait.

Dixie: No, Tad, this is it. This is our chance to have everything that we always wanted.

Tad: A child?

Dixie: Our little girl, that we can call --

Tad and Dixie: Kate.

Tad: Kate.

Dixie: Will you do this with me?

Tad: How?

Dixie: Just say yes. You and me and Kate, finally. Have faith this time. Tell me you want this.

Tad: I want this. Yes. I want this.

Adam: How's my grandson?

J.R.: He's good. Jenny and Kathy are, too, just in case you were wondering.

Adam: Kathy seems -- seems all right?

J.R.: For now. Until she finds out that her mom's gone.

Adam: Julia was not Kathy's mother.

J.R.: How could somebody be so obsessed with family yet have no idea how to be part of one?

Adam: Oh, I understand, J.R., I understand.

J.R.: No, you don't understand, because if you did, you would understand what losing Julia and Tad means. It's about Jenny not having a father. It's about Krystal losing her husband, her best friend while Babe watches the entire time. It's about Colby losing her friend, the man who asked her to be the godmother to his daughter. It's about Jamie getting that phone call and finding out that the woman he loved and his father are gone. Just like that.

Adam: What about you, son? If Tad dies, what happens to you?

J.R.: Well, I'll probably find someplace to hide, lie down, and never want to get up. But I would, because they need me.

Adam: You mean Little A and Colby?

J.R.: And Babe and Jamie and Krystal.

Adam: You care about all of them.

J.R.: Yeah. And if Tad dies, to watch them suffer would be the hardest part.

Jesse: Ah, ah, ah, ah.

Angie: What are you doing?

Jesse: Baby, you are running on fumes. You need some rest. Caffeine? Come on now.

Angie: No, what I need is to get back to work.

Jesse: Are you kidding me?

Angie: I can't believe she's gone. Julia had so many plans. I mean, moving to Australia, starting a new life with -- how is Kathy going to go on without her mother?

Jesse: Baby, I'm sure that Julia Santos had a plan in place in case something like this happened.

Angie: Something like this? Jesse, it was a wedding. A celebration, party dresses, flowers. And now we're here? Burying Julia, praying for Tad -- how, baby, how did this happen?

Jesse: Well, you're not going to find the answers out there right now, so come on. Come on.

Angie: What, am I supposed to find them in here?

Jesse: Well, maybe not. But at least in here, you got me.

Kendall: How do you do it? How do you stay so strong after what happened to Julia?

Zach: Well, I don't really have a choice, you know? Everything's falling apart out there, and -- but here, this is our home, and there was a time we didn't think we'd celebrate Spike's second birthday.

Kendall: Yeah, or if he'd be able to hear us sing him happy birthday. And then there's Ian, another miracle.

[Balloon sputtering]

Kendall: Ahh!

Zach: Whoa. Team Slater. All right. Another red one.

Kendall: Oh, thank you, Zach. Thank you for making me laugh.

[Phone ringing]

Kendall: And thank you for -- oh, thank you for reminding me how lucky we are. Wait, hold on.

[Balloon pops]

Kendall: Aye.

Zach: I just blew them up.

Kendall: Hello? Rachel, hey, listen. Can you distract the boys for a couple of more hours? Great, we have more work to do. Ok, thanks. Bye.

[Balloon sputtering]

Zach: Couple of hours? Do you have any idea what I could do in a couple of hours?

Kendall: Oo. Couple of hours?

Zach: Couple of hours.

Kendall: You can do a lot in a couple of hours. Ah-ha-ha.

Dixie: [Breathing heavily]

Tad: That's it. That's my girl. Come on. Come on, just a little longer. You're doing great.

Dixie: How much longer?

Tad: Any second, honey. Come on. Come on, Dixie, push.

Dixie: Ahh!

Tad: Push.

Dixie: Ahh!

Tad: I want you to meet somebody. I want you to meet somebody.

Dixie: Look at her.

Dixie: Oh, she's perfect.

Tad: Of course, she's perfect. Of course, she's perfect. She's our Kate.

Dixie: Hi.

Krystal: Where are you, Tad? You've got to come back. And not just for me, but Jenny. Your baby girl misses you.

[Baby cries]

Dixie: Oh, ok. There you go. That's better.

Tad: Is this real? I thought I lost you. And Kate, I tried for so long, but I couldn't -- I couldn't -- yeah. But none of that happened, did it? Yeah. You've been here the entire time.

Dixie: I'm here now, Tad. This is our life now.

Tad: Mama.

Dixie: That's the birthday girl.

[Baby talk]

Tad: I want a close-up. This is a close-up. Come on, ready to get sticky, kid?

Dixie: Look at your cake.

Tad: Who is this for, birthday girl? Isn't it special? You want to blow out your candles? Ok, with Mama. Ready? On three.

Tad and Dixie: One, two, three.

Dixie: Yay.

Tad: Ready?

Dixie: Oh, I'm ready, baby.

Tad: Ok, hurry up. Jamie, J.R., get down here, guys. Picture time.

Dixie: Don't tell them that. They'll never come.

Tad: Son of a --

Dixie: [Laughs]

Tad: Oh, she is a miracle. I'm telling you, man. The way that she's motoring around. Before you know it, she --

Dixie: [Gasps]

Tad: Honey, did you see that? Did you see that? Did you see that?

Dixie: Yes, I did. Where's the camera?

Tad: I don't know, I don't know. She took her first step. She took her first step.

[Kate crying]

Tad: Forget the camera. Our little girl's walking. Stay where you are. You're going to make her upset. She -- it's ok.

Dixie: Honey, don't you want to remember this forever?

Tad: Believe me, I will. Oh, honey.

Kate: Look at the picture I drew, Daddy.

Tad: Yeah? Oh, wow, look at that. That's something. It's really, really good, too. This is you, right? It's got to be you. It looks so much like you. Uh-huh, and this -- oh, that's J.R., for sure. Right? And that's Jamie, mm-hmm. And I know who this beautiful woman is right here. This guy right here, the one that looks so much like Johnny Depp, who's that?

Kate: That's you.

Tad: Oh, yeah, well, I should have known.

Dixie: Oh, yeah. You and Johnny Depp, two peas in a pod.

Tad: Pretty much. That's beautiful. That is just beautiful. And do you know why it's such a beautiful picture?

Kate: Why?

Tad: Because it's of our family.

J.R.: I heard there were some blueberry muffins in the kitchen, but that wouldn't interest any one of you, would it? It would? Then go in there and get some.

J.R.: Sometimes I just want to grab a hold of Little A and just never let go.

Adam: You have to protect your children.

J.R.: Yeah. That's something Tad never got to do, at least with one of his kids. He could die without ever finding Kate.

Adam: You make it sound like the girl was kidnapped by a pack of bandits. Dixie, the love of Tad Martin's life, gave his daughter away.

J.R.: Don't you even say my mom's name again.

Adam: He got exactly what he deserved with that girl.

J.R.: You can't be serious.

Adam: Let's talk about what he took from you. How quickly you forget Tad made you believe that your son was dead.

J.R.: That was completely different.

Adam: All right, let's talk about what he did -- what he took from me. You, Colby, Charlotte --

J.R.: Don't you mean Jenny?

Adam: He stole enough kids to last a lifetime.

J.R.: Well, I'm here. Just in case you missed that. And last time I checked, Colby's upstairs. As for your Charlotte, I don't know what to say.

Adam: Well, I had to mourn for a child that never existed. That's pretty funny, isn't it? That's on Martin.

J.R.: That's on you. You could have made a choice, to stand by Krystal and been a part of Jenny's life, but you walked away.

Adam: I didn't walk away. I didn't walk away. That woman that I was married to had just delivered Tad Martin's baby. And then they walked away one night, divorced me, married each other. I didn't walk away. I had no choice.

J.R.: Of course, there's a choice. There's always a choice. You either find it in your heart, or you don't.

Adam: You think what you like. Burning Charlotte's things, saying goodbye to her, one of the most painful experiences of my life.

J.R.: You're right. Losing someone is very hard.

Adam: Thank you.

J.R.: But that was one fire. That was one night. Imagine living with that pain for years. Imagine Tad waking up and his daughter's not there, and he has to lose her all over again.

Kendall: Ah. Take a deep breath. Breathe. Wow, look at this place. We did good.

Zach: We did better than good. Sometimes I look around, not just at this, but at my family, you, Ian, spike and I don't think I deserve it.

Kendall: Are you kidding me? That's not true, Zach. You deserve more.

Zach: More? What's more? We live, we love.

Kendall: We fight.

Zach: We fight, we fight together. I've got to tell you something. I love you more than anything, anyone I've ever loved before. You got to understand that.

Kendall: I do. And I love you, too. And I need you... I need you. That's it.

Zach: I want to show you something.

Kendall: You do?

Zach: Ah.

Kendall: Whoo-hoo.

Zach: Come here.

Kendall: Hey, hey, now. Where are you taking me, buddy?

Angie: Jesse, when you were gone, there were so many nights that I wished I'd died, too.

Jesse: Angela.

Angie: That's how bad I wanted to be with you. And now, wherever Tad is, if he's feeling the same way about Dixie...

Tad: Oh.

Dixie: Well?

Tad: Mission accomplished.

Dixie: Mm.

Tad: Oh, let's see. By my reckoning, that gives us about two hours before her first water request.

Dixie: Well, what are you waiting for, then? Get over here.

Tad: I thought you'd never ask.

Dixie: I'm going to slap some lovin' on you.

Tad: Ok. Sounds interesting. You know what I was thinking? Did you ever stop to wonder, I don't know, I mean, if things hadn't worked out this way? You know, if somehow we missed this. If you think about it, it would have been simple, you know? Just a bad decision here, a mistake there.

Dixie: We wouldn't be sitting in front of the fire with our sleeping girl upstairs.

Tad: Mm-hmm. It's a scary thought though.

Dixie: Yeah. More than you know.

Tad: Thank you, Dixie. For everything. For the perfect life. I mean it. With you and Kate, I've had everything.

Dixie: Tad.

Tad: So slap some lovin' on me. You said it.

Dixie: Here it comes.

Tad: You promised.

Dixie: Are you ready? Are you ready?

Tad: Ok, which side?

Dixie: Here it comes.

Krystal: Come on, come on, Tad. Come on, you've got unfinished business here. You know that. So you come back. You come back and let's find Kate.

Kathy: Do you want one?

J.R.: Actually, I'm full. But I bet you Winifred would want one. Why don't you bring one to her? Yeah. Oh, Kathy, she's such a good kid. I almost forgot how close she was to Tad. If she loses him, too --

Adam: Tad's not dead yet, so why do you keep tormenting yourself with all these what ifs?

J.R.: Because I don't know what else to do. I mean, Tad's lying in that bed helpless. I mean, I could sit here and be useless and do nothing, or I could try to find a way to help him.

Adam: Help him? How?

J.R.: By finding Kate.

Adam: Tad spent years searching for her and found nothing. What makes you think you can do better?

J.R.: Because I won't give up until I find her. And if Tad dies, even if he doesn't, I'm going to spend my life trying to bring Kate home.

Angie: Is this damn thing even working? I should go to the front desk and make sure.

Jesse: The pager's working just fine, baby.

Angie: I hate this.

Jesse: I know, I know.

Angie: What if he doesn't come out of this?

Jesse: He has to.

Angie: That's just the thing. He doesn't have to.

Jesse: Angela.

Angie: He may very well --

Jesse: Angela, Angela, you've got to have faith. My God, that's what got us through the last 20 years. It's going to get us through this.

Angie: Should we go sit with Tad? I don't want him to be alone.

Jesse: Krystal's with him right now. I'll go check on him a little later, I promise. Right now, you are exhausted, and you need to get some shuteye. Come on. Come on, now.

Dixie: To the mall and back, ok? No joyriding all over town.

Kate: Nobody calls it joyriding, Mom.

Tad: Duh.

Dixie: Do you want these keys or not?

Kate: Yes, I want them definitely.

Dixie: Ok, no more than four people in the car at all times, and everybody wears seatbelts, ok?

Kate: Yeah, I got it.

Kate: Mom, Dad, thanks.

[Kate giggles]

[Door opens and closes]

Tad: I swear, that girl's God's vengeance on me for every lousy thing I've ever done.

Dixie: It's quite possible. And she's going to college.

Tad: And we're paying for it.

Dixie: What are we going to do with this big, old house all by ourselves?

Tad: Oh, I don't know. We'll come up with something.

Dixie: Like what?

Tad: Trampoline.

Dixie: Oh.

Tad: Yeah.

Dixie: Mm.

Tad: Unicycle.

Dixie: Hm.

Tad: Ok, I've got a better one. How about we set up a trapeze right here in the living room?

Dixie: What are we, joining a circus?

Tad: Why not? I'm very bendy.

Dixie: You certainly are. Well, why not? After all, I did marry a clown.

Tad: Oh, you are so going to get it.

Dixie: He's a clown. Clown. Stop, what are you doing?

Tad: Clown?

[Laughter continuing]

Dixie: That tickles.

Tad: Love of my life. Together forever.

Dixie: There's nothing I want more.

Adam: You should focus your energy on your own family.

J.R.: For the millionth time, Kate is my family. And even if she wasn't, I would still try to find her.

Adam: Why? Because that's what Tad wants?

J.R.: It's because it's what I want. Why can't you get that? When you love someone, you want happiness for them. Their dreams, their goals become yours, because you just want to see them smile.

Adam: Don't you think I understand that? I've spent my life wanting what's best for my children.

J.R.: How about just trying to make us happy?

Adam: Yeah, that, too, for all the ones I love.

J.R.: Yeah, name them.

Adam: Oh, come on.

J.R.: No, seriously, Dad. Who do you love?

Adam: Well, aside from you, there's Colby. There's Little Adam.

J.R.: Who else?

Adam: Stuart, Hayley, Skye. Erica on a good day.

J.R.: And?

Adam: And Krystal -- what's your point?

J.R.: Everybody you just listed all care about Tad.

Adam: I know that.

J.R.: Then why don't you stop dancing on his grave and start thinking about what losing Tad would do to us, to all of us?

Jesse: Well, I told Angela that you're coming back to us, buddy boy. You better not make a liar out of me.

Dixie: You are such a liar.

Tad: I am not lying. It is the God's honest --

Dixie: You do not have a case in Hawaii.

Tad: There is a little follow-up I could take of, ok? Besides, you, me, and a beach and a couple of mai tais. How bad could it be? Don't make a federal case of it.

Dixie: Oh, yes, and a quick visit to see Kate.

Tad: That's an excellent idea.

[Dixie scoffs]

Tad: That's terrific. I'm glad you thought of it.

Dixie: Tad, she's on her honeymoon.

Tad: What's your point?

[Dixie laughs]

Tad: So what? Who wouldn't want to hang with their parents on their honeymoon? We're talking about a quick dinner. I'm not talking about sharing a mix -- point taken.

Dixie: Thank you. I know you miss her already. Don't you?

Tad: So badly, it hurts.

Dixie: Well, look on the bright side.

Tad: The bright side?

Dixie: You still have me.

Tad: And you know something? I don't care what happens. I am never letting you go, ever. Look, I'm not kidding, look, look. I swear, he looks just like Kate did when she was this age.

Dixie: Oh.

Tad: Oh, he is a handsome devil, aren't you? You're so handsome. Listen, do you think Kate would mind if he came to grow up with us?

Dixie: Probably.

Tad: Yeah? Oh, well. In that case, how do you feel about being spoiled?

Dixie: Rotten.

Tad: Must be broken, because I didn't leave the door open.

Dixie: You were the last one out of the house.

Tad: Well, I don't know what to tell you, because it wasn't me.

Dixie: Well, then who, Tad?

Tad: The pool boy.

Dixie: We don't have a pool.

Tad: The cleaning woman.

Dixie: You're looking at her.

Tad: Really, this the best you could do?

[Dixie scoffs]

Tad: As long as you admit it. Gotcha.

Dixie: You do realize we've been having the same argument for 45 years.

Tad: And you realize that we are going to have it for another 45 years if you keep this up.

Dixie: Oh, ho, ho, ho.

Tad: Just for the record, I didn't leave the door open.

J.R.: Tad is lying in that bed, and there's nothing we can do to stop it.

Adam: J.R.

J.R.: I just wish I knew where she was, Dad. I mean, even if I couldn't bring her to him, I could at least tell him, "Tad, wake up. Kate is waiting for you. She's here, she's waiting."

Adam: J.R. --

J.R.: That's not going to happen, is it?

Adam: Damn it.

J.R.: What?

Adam: I hope you're satisfied. Damn it to hell.

J.R.: Wait a minute, Dad. Where are you going? Dad.

Jesse: What do we do to get you back, Tad? What do we do? What do I do? What do I do? What do I do? What do I do?

Zach: For a second, I thought it was my birthday.

Kendall: Nice. Thank you.

Zach: You ok?

Kendall: When I was in that coma, pregnant with Spike, two children in the hospital at the same time, how did we survive?

Zach: You leaned on me, I leaned on you. That's what happens. People love each other. There's always more. The way I love you, and we love our kids, you know, you think you run out. There's always more. And when you think there isn't, you've just got to believe that everything's going to be ok.

Kendall: But I didn't. You were counting on me, and I didn't. Do you think that things will ever be the same again? I mean, not for us, but for everybody else, everything else?

Zach: Hey. I learned a long time ago that things never stay the same.

Kendall: You know what I learned?

Zach: What?

Kendall: To never take a single moment for granted. Our boy is turning two today, two. Let's celebrate him. Let's celebrate life.

Zach: Yeah, for him, for us, for Tad and for Julia.

Kendall: Yeah.

Angie: Come here. Let me take care of you for a change.

Adam: Yes. Yeah, thank you.

Jake: Adam? What the hell do you want?

Tad: We've had a good life.

Dixie: The best.

Tad: Everybody's happy and healthy. Our children, our grandchildren.

Dixie: Our great-grandchildren.

Tad: I've gotten everything I ever dreamed of.

Dixie: Me, too.

Tad: Dixie, I think I'm ready to go with you.

Jake: I think it's best if you just leave.

Adam: No. Jake, is it true what they say that even though Tad is unconscious, he can still hear me? There's something I need to tell him, Jake.

Dixie: Ready to go with me? Where?

Tad: Into the light.

Jake: I don't care what you have to say to my brother, Adam. He doesn't want to hear it.

Adam: Oh, believe me, he'll want to hear this.

Jake: Adam, the only way you're stepping into this room is over my dead body.

Tad: Dixie, please. Think about it. Everything we've ever had, everything we've ever been is right there. And it's just waiting for us. And if we want it, we could relive every wonderful moment over and over again.

Dixie: Yes. We would.

Tad: Come on. Let's go.

[Dixie and Tad start walking away hand in hand]

>> On the next "All My Children" --

Krystal (to Adam): Leave Tad in peace, please.

Dixie: Together.

Tad: Forever.

[Heart monitor beeping]

Adam: I need you to bring Kathy over to the hospital right away.
