[When the doorbell rings at the Martin home, Krystal looks through the peephole and sighs]
Krystal: Oh. Oh, Jenny, I wish you could talk right now, because if you're anything like your big sister, you would tell me to seal that door shut with Crazy Glue. Huh. Oh. Don't let him in, Krystal. Let Adam go.
Tad: Oh! I don't care what kind of day you're having. Don't take it out on the good old -- Mickey Mantle? My God! Ha! This is Mickey Mantle's rookie card.
Tad: Are you insane? This thing should be framed behind bulletproof glass, not burned up in a shot glass. Where'd you get this?
Babe: Um -- somebody gave it to me for Little A.
Tad: Wow -- nice move. Unless the someone that gave it to you is someone that used to work behind the bar.
Babe: Look, Richie wouldn't take no for an answer.
Tad: Ah, I get it. Well, that does seem to be one of his problems lately, doesn't it?
Babe: So what am I supposed to do with it?
Tad: If you ask me, I mean, the mercenary part of me says you put it in a safety-deposit box for Little A's college fund, but he's a Chandler, and he needs a college fund like I need another set of ears, so, I don't know, I guess you're right -- you sort of got to consider the source.
Babe: Thanks, Tad.
Tad: Good luck.
Ryan: So it's nap time over there, huh? How long has Spike been down? Did you take his temperature? Really? Well, that's good, right? That means he's getting better. I know, I know, I know. All I can do is wait -- I know. It's just -- it's just I want everything fixed -- Spike, the mess with Richie, all of it.
Greenlee: What's going on, Kendall? Why did you bring me here?
Kendall: To do what I should've done a long time ago, the day you almost killed my son. You know all about regret, don't you, Greenlee?
Greenlee: What is this all about? Did something happen to one of the boys?
Kendall: Spike may not be able to have the cochlear implant.
Greenlee: Why? Uh -- I thought the implants were a done deal. What went wrong?
Kendall: You did.
Greenlee: Kendall, just, um, tell me what I can do.
Greenlee: Please, please let me help you get through this and --
Kendall: No, no. There is no "through this," Greenlee. I thought there was, but there's not. And I tried. My God, I tried so hard to make this work, but it's impossible. Nothing will ever be enough.
Greenlee: "Enough"? "Enough" for what -- for us? Because we're going to make it, Kendall.
Kendall: If anyone should have almost died that night, if anyone should have been permanently wounded and been changed forever -- "forever," Greenlee -- it should've been you.
Greenlee: Yeah. You're right. And I wish it had been.
[Music plays at The Comeback]
Ryan: He did? Spike said "Daddy" again? You're kidding me. Hey, give him a kiss for me, all right? And give one to Emma, too. Ok. I love you, and I'll be home soon.
Tad: You ok?
Ryan: Yeah. Yeah, I just found out a little bad news today, that Spike might not be a candidate for the cochlear implant anymore.
Tad: Oh, well, I'm sorry to hear that, Ryan.
Ryan: Yeah, thanks.
Tad: So you said, you know, "might not." When are you going to know for sure?
Ryan: It depends. He's -- he's got a really bad infection. He's got fluid in his ears right now, so if it turns out that he's just sick, then it's no problem, but if not, then --
Tad: I'll send up a prayer. What are you doing here?
Ryan: I don't know. I actually just need to clear my head, I guess, you know?
Tad: Ah. Well, good for you. I've been there a couple of times lately myself.
Ryan: It's just I'm his dad, you know? If I can't protect him, then --
Tad: You feel like a failure. You're not. Nobody got the driver's manual to the universe, although sometimes I -- I wish we could.
Ryan: How do you do it? I mean, with Kate missing all this time, how do you -- how do you handle that?
Tad: I don't.
Tad: I'm sorry -- yes, I -- I know that's a big help, but --
Ryan: Yeah, thank you so much.
Tad: Don't look at me for words of wisdom -- I don't know what the hell to do. I know exactly how you feel about Spike, I do. I'm sort of in the same situation with Kate. I can't control it, I can't turn it off. You can be sure that wherever I am during the day or whatever I'm doing, she's, you know, she's along for the ride.
Ryan: And, yet, here you are. I mean, how do you do that? You found a way to keep going.
Tad: Oh. Well, I -- I don't really have a choice. I want to do the best I can for Jenny, I got a home to look after with Krystal and Colby. Until I locate Kate, there's -- there's really nothing I can do. Sometimes it's the only way you can look at it -- you're going to drive yourself crazy if you keep picking a fight you can't win.
Ryan: So, what now?
Singer: Goodbye ♪
Tad: Maybe you should pick a fight you can win.
[Knock on door]
Richie: Hold on. Hold on. Uh -- hi.
Richie: Come in, come in, come in. Uh -- huh. Do you want to sit down? Ahem. Huh.
Babe: So did you finally decide to leave town? Because of what I said?
Richie: Uh -- no. It's just time to leave the Pine Cone. It's time to move on.
Babe: The motel kicked you out?
Richie: I prefer "invited to leave."
Babe: But you're staying in town?
Richie: Yeah, for now. I don't know -- there's something about this place that makes it hard to leave.
Krystal: Adam. I thought I told you not to come here anymore.
Adam: I couldn't stay away. I want to see you as myself, not as Stuart.
Krystal: Ok. As yourself, what do you want to say?
Adam: I am so sorry for what I did to Jenny and to you.
Krystal: You already told me that.
Adam: Yeah, but there's -- there's more. I love you. I never stopped. And what I did to Jenny was the lowest moment of my life, for which I have paid the ultimate price -- because when I lost you, I lost my soul. And I'm here, because I want to take it back.
Krystal: Adam --
Adam: I want to take you back.
Adam: Do you think you could ever love me again?
Krystal: I know I could. You're not the only one who made a mistake. I was right there with you, Adam, and -- I'm so sorry.
[Krystal comes out of her daydream and answers the door]
Adam: [As Stuart] Hi.
Krystal: Hello, Stuart.
Adam: Hi, Krystal.
Kendall: I need to do something, but I can't do it alone. Will you help me?
Greenlee: Yes, of course, whatever you need.
Greenlee: What -- what are you doing?
Kendall: These stains are from my son, my boy -- his blood, his pain.
Greenlee: Please don't do this.
Kendall: You said whatever I need. This is what I need, Greenlee. Tell me what happened.
Greenlee: You know what happened.
Kendall: No, I don't -- not everything. Tell me what happened the night that you made Spike bleed.
Aidan: Greenlee? It's me, again. Why aren't you picking up? Kendall.
Greenlee: This won't solve anything!
Kendall: It has to. This car seat, that ravine, that whole night -- marks the beginning of Spike's new life. I know the when, I know the where. Now I need to know the how and why.
Kendall: How did it happen, Greenlee? I want to know about the first few minutes and the first few seconds. You were the only one with him, so tell me -- how did it feel when you saw my son's blood?
Greenlee: Reliving the pain will not give you the answers you need, Kendall. Trust me -- I know. Oh, oh -- ok. Ok, ok, ok, ok, I have you.
Kendall: Of course, you know, Greenlee. That's the whole point of all of this. You're the only one who does know. You were with my son during the most terrifying time of his tiny little life.
Greenlee: Ok, I'm not letting you do this.
Kendall: No, you, Greenlee -- you. You were with him when it should have been me. Now, you tell me. You tell me what Spike went through -- all of it.
Kendall: Oh, you -- shut that -- shut it off before I smash the hell out of it. Shut it off.
[Greenlee shuts phone off]
Greenlee: You want details, Kendall? Fine -- this. This is what saved your son's life. This is what I used to call for help.
Kendall: Well, you wouldn't have had to use anything to call for help if you hadn't have taken him in the first place, Greenlee. Now, if that saved Spike's life, who almost took it? Who, Greenlee?
Greenlee: Me. I did.
Kendall: Show me where it happened.
Greenlee: Kendall, I am not going back to that site, not again.
Kendall: No, no -- not there. Show me here. Your car turned. This is where your car landed. Upside-down? Show me where Spike landed.
Greenlee: Stop it.
Kendall: Show me, Greenlee. Was it over there? Or was it over here? How far was it?
Greenlee: Look, I can't let you do this.
Kendall: No, Greenlee. You've already -- you've already owned up to it. You've already taken responsibility for what you did. We're halfway there, Greenlee. It's time for us to finish this.
Ryan: You got one in mind?
Tad: Yeah. You got a lot on your plate. There are certain distractions you shouldn't have to deal with. Richie Novak is one of them.
Ryan: I have been thinking a little bit about him.
Tad: Yeah, well, I rest my case -- you shouldn't have to. I got to hand it to you -- I got to give you big points for that little stunt that you and Annie pulled on him the other night. That was genius. It was pure genius.
Ryan: Well, I need to thank you for your starter pistol -- that came in very handy. Thank you.
Tad: Don't mention it. And I mean don't mention it -- seriously. The last thing I want is to come in here in two days and find out that Richie was caught boiling somebody's pet rabbit.
Ryan: Don't worry -- we're the only targets Richie's got right now.
Tad: You know, I'm sorry about that, especially for Annie.
Ryan: Yeah. She's just hoping that one day the light will go on and all of a sudden, her brother will be nice and normal.
Tad: Yeah, but she knows better, right?
Ryan: It's killing her, though, Tad -- I mean, having all of this brought up again after all these years, you know? And you know what's ironic is that if Annie hadn't have tried to find her dad after we first found out that Spike was deaf, then Richie would never have found us and now he's tormenting her. But it's all right because I know his game. I know how he's playing his game now, and I got my claws in him, and I've got to let him go.
Tad: There you go.
Colby: Hello, Tad.
Tad: Hey, my little hero.
Tad: Hey, baby. Ah -- and the entourage. What's up? Word.
Dre: Did he just say --
Colby: Uh, don't even talk about it. So, have you decided yet?
Sean: Decided what?
Colby: Oh, well, we were at Fusion earlier, and we showed Babe the CD cover. She loves the picture you took of Corrina.
Corrina: Yeah, right. The camera loves me.
Colby: Oh, it does. I think you should do it.
Sean: So, Fusion wants you to model?
Ren: Model what -- baseboards and amps?
Corrina: Makeup, dumbass.
Dre: I'll bet 10 bucks she ain't interested.
Colby: I'll take that bet.
Sean: Ahem -- you know, I'm surprised you're into this. I mean, you really think the world needs another Ava?
Colby: Corrina is so much more right for this than Ava. First of all, she's smart, and second of all, she doesn't run around Pine Valley like a slut on wheels. Corrina, would -- would you mack on someone's boyfriend?
Corrina: Um -- not knowingly?
Ren: Whoa. Am I missing something here? What's going on with you two and this Ava chick?
Sean: Uh -- I'm going to get some fries.
Ren: What did I do?
Dre: Back off. Who the guy hooks up with is nobody's business.
Ren: Sean and the supermodel?
Colby: Ok, do you know what? Krystal asked me to check on something.
Ren: Oh, oh, oh. Solid.
Adam: [As Stuart] Ah. Oh. I don't know what you got cooking in the kitchen, but it sure smells delicious.
Krystal: Oh, well, I hope it tastes that way.
Adam: Well, why wouldn't it?
Krystal: Oh, I'm just trying out some new recipe -- you know, low-fat, low cholesterol, that kind of thing.
Adam: Heart-healthy recipes. Adam is trying those. He's trying to eat better and -- and live right.
Krystal: Is he?
Adam: Yeah. I think he might even be doing better if he could come by here more often.
Krystal: I -- I think Adam is doing just fine without me.
Adam: No. I'm not too sure about that. He told me that he apologized to you about what he did to Jenny. That's progress.
Krystal: Yeah. Just what are we progressing to?
Adam: What do you mean?
Krystal: You care about me, don't you -- Stuart?
Adam: Of course, I do.
Krystal: And you want what's best for me?
Krystal: Then why do you keep pushing me towards Adam? That's not what's best for me -- not at all.
Richie: Manager said I could have as many of these as I want. Apparently, he can't get me out of here fast enough.
Babe: So who do you think got you kicked out? Ryan?
Richie: From now on, I plead the fifth when it comes to Ryan or Annie. All it does is get us in trouble.
Babe: But you're staying in Pine Valley anyway?
Richie: Yeah, you know, I'll find a place to live. Pitch a tent in the woods if I have to. Lived in worse.
Babe: So you keep reminding me.
Richie: Ahem. Yeah, well, only good thing about prison is everywhere else is a step up. So what about you, Babe? You still want me to leave?
Babe: Well, whatever you decide, don't forget to take this with you.
[Greenlee tearfully picks up the car seat and places it upside down where it landed during the accident]
Kendall: What did you say to him?
Kendall: Before the car went off the road, before his life became silent. What were the last words that Spike may ever hear?
Krystal: You know that -- you know that Adam and I are no good together. You know that.
Adam: [As Stuart] No, no, I don't know that. You were Adam's soul, Krystal.
Krystal: Are you sure your brother has one?
Adam: Huh. Yeah, I'm sure. So are you. You know Adam would never do anything to hurt you or Jenny again. Would you -- would you hurt Adam again, knowing --
Krystal: No, no, never. But none of that matters anymore.
Adam: Why not? He -- he's sorry, and you're sorry.
Krystal: Adam -- Adam thought that Jenny was his. And then he found out that she's Tad's.
Krystal: And that fact doesn't change, no matter how sorry everybody is.
Adam: I don't think I know what you mean.
Krystal: Oh. If Adam and I were to try again --
Krystal: When he looked at my baby girl, what would he see?
Adam: Huh. I think he'd see exactly what I see.
Krystal: And what's that?
Adam: A beautiful baby girl with sparkling eyes and -- and when she laughs, everybody else wants to laugh, too.
Krystal: Huh. Really? You sure she just wouldn't be a constant reminder of everything that -- that went wrong? Because I -- I won't have that. I won't have that for my little girl, I won't.
Adam: No -- well, I -- I don't think it's about where Jenny's from. I think it's about where she is now, and what's she going to be when she grows up. Your daughter stole my heart, Krystal. I --
Adam: She'd steal Adam's heart, too.
Krystal: You think?
Adam: I know.
Dre: What is that?
Ren: What does it look like?
Colby: A peacock in drag?
Ren: It's Corrina.
Corrina: Oh, yeah, that's me? In what universe, huh?
Ren: The one where you decide to be a model.
Corrina: Well, the only thing I am deciding is whether or not to smack you in the head.
Dre: Ah -- see, now there's a bet I'll take.
Colby: Hey, Sean. Back me up here. Don't you think Corrina would make a sick model?
Sean: Hey, it might not hurt to get her in front of the camera. You know, score some attention for the band and everything.
Dre: No, no, if Corrina does this, she does it for herself, not for the band.
Colby: "If"? I'd be stoked to have an opportunity like this. You should do it.
Corrina: You do all know that she's sitting at this table right now?
Colby: You would be such a better role model than Ava.
Ren: I think someone's jealous.
Sean: No, no, no, Colby's right. Look, you're -- you're smart, you're funny, you're talented.
Colby: Not to mention, gorgeous.
Corrina: Um -- I'm going to go get some fries. Do you want anything?
Corrina: Yeah, sure.
Colby: Here, I'll help you.
Ren: Oh, and some more wings.
Colby and Corrina: All right.
Ren: And -- ribs?
Ren: All right, dude, I got to ask you -- dude, that hurt. He doesn't have to answer if he doesn't want to.
Sean: Well, answer what?
Ren: You and Ava -- did you really do the deed? Damn, dude, that is, like, I mean, how do you go from someone like that to -- I mean -- Colby's cool, man. She's cute, she's sweet, she's funny, she's loyal. But --
Dre: But what? You just answered your own question.
Ren: I know. I know.
Ryan: Aidan, what do you got?
Aidan: This Brennan guy has moved around a lot. But now, it's as if he's -- he's just disappeared underground.
Ryan: Ok. Well, you'll keep looking, right?
Aidan: Yeah, I'll keep looking.
Ryan: Aidan, what is it?
Aidan: It's just -- you haven't seen Greenlee today, have you?
Ryan: No. Listen, you keep doing what you're doing, and I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing on my end, all right?
Aidan: Meaning what?
Ryan: Meaning Richie is still in Pine Valley, and I'm not through with him yet.
Babe: I found out it's worth a lot of money. You're out of a job, no place to live.
[Babe picks up a bottle of pills]
Richie: Oh. Anti-inflammatories for -- old baseball injury. I kept dislocating my elbow. You know, I think I -- I tweaked it a little bit at the batting cages.
Babe: I told you that game was dangerous.
Richie: Mm-hmm. I'd do it again in a heartbeat if it meant I got another date with you.
Richie: Uh-uh. I told you, that's a gift. It's yours until you decide to give it to Little A.
Richie: Hello? Speaking. What? Oh -- fantastic. Hold on. Could you -- could you get me a piece of paper? Um -- just hold on one second. Ok. Uh -- where is it? Ok. Perfect. Thank you. Thank you very much. I'll be there. Ok. I might not need that card after all. I think I just got a job, or an interview, anyway.
Babe: Here in Pine Valley?
Richie: Yeah. Looks like Ryan might not have spread the dirt on me as thick as he planned.
Babe: What's the job?
Richie: I don't know. They said I was working for some wealthy big shot.
Babe: Well, I'll get out of your way, then.
Richie: Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Just -- um -- I'm just going to change. Give me, like, two seconds. I'll be right back, I promise you. I promise. Uh -- wow, a job. It's been a long time. I can't believe I'm going for this. Ok, it's going to take a couple of more seconds than a few seconds, but -- ahem.
Greenlee: I don't remember what I said to Spike.
Kendall: I don't believe you.
Greenlee: It's just -- it's such a blur, Kendall.
Kendall: Yeah, bull. I bet every last detail is seared into your brain.
Greenlee: I'm going to take you back to her. I'm going to take you back to her right now.
Kendall: Tell me, Greenlee.
Kendall: You know, you owe me this, damn it!
Greenlee: I said, "I'm taking you to her, honey. I'll call and tell her I'm taking you back to your mom." Ok? That's what I said.
Kendall: He knew. Oh, thank God. My baby knew. My baby knew he was coming home to me. My baby knew.
Greenlee: Oh. Oh.
Krystal: You're so certain.
Adam: [As Stuart] How could I not be?
Babe: Hi, you two. Hey there, sweet pea.
Adam: Oh, well -- uh -- yeah, it's getting late. Goodbye, Krystal.
Babe: Oh, wait --
Adam: Goodbye, Babe.
Babe: You don't have to go.
Adam: Yeah, I got to go.
Babe: Stuart --
[Door opens and closes]
Babe: Yikes. Did I interrupt something?
Krystal: No. No, we were just talking, that's all.
Babe: About Adam?
Krystal: Now, what makes you say that?
Babe: Well, you've got "I can't help but love him" written all over your face, Mama.
Krystal: Well, you've got nothing but worry written all over yours. What's up?
Babe: I just got back from seeing Richie.
Krystal: Oh -- and you are lecturing me? Baby doll, that boy could be trouble.
Babe: Yeah, well, I just went to give him back a baseball card he left for Little A.
Krystal: Have you ever heard of the mail? Come on, Babe. Now, you -- you just got out of one big mess with J.R. Don't -- don't jump back into another one.
Babe: I'm not, ok? Don't worry.
Krystal: So what did happen? Well, Richie got a call about a job.
Babe: No. Sounded like some big secret. He'd be working for some rich guy.
Krystal: Now, what rich guy would hire an ex-con just out of prison?
Babe: Well, I thought they might have contacted you as a reference, but you don't know anything about this?
Krystal: No, I don't, but I damn sure know who does. Would you stay here and watch your sister for me, honey?
Babe: Well, where are you going?
Krystal: I smell a rat, and I'm going to go catch it.
Babe: Wait, Mama -- you keep saying to watch out, so what about you? Mama?
Kendall: This -- this -- this was not part of the plan.
Greenlee: No, it's --
Kendall: Me -- me here with you. It wasn't -- it wasn't supposed to be like this.
Greenlee: No, it's ok, Kendall.
Kendall: No, no, no, you don't understand, Greenlee. I have worked so hard. I have tried to make things right for my family, but I can't.
Greenlee: But you got some terrible news today.
Kendall: No, no, Greenlee. Greenlee, I don't think you get it. Being with you -- being nice to you -- sometimes, I think it will kill me, honest to God. But I was doing it anyway for Spike and Ian.
Greenlee: And you?
Kendall: And me, yes. I was doing it for all of us.
Greenlee: I know I have said this a million times. But I am so sorry about what happened. And if I could do anything to make it better, I would. If I could go back in time, I would.
Kendall: That is the only thing that would -- that would make it better, isn't it? To go back. Back to before -- before Spike was hurt. Before Ian was born too early. We can't go back. We can't start over.
Greenlee: Maybe we can.
Colby: Oh, my God! You are so Vogueing right now, or whatever they call it. That is so 1980s.
Colby: Let me get up here. Whoo! Yeah!
Tad: What are you -- what the hell do you think you're doing? Hello? Can't be jumping off of furniture in heels.
Colby: Sorry, they don't let people get hospital -- hospitalized for Vogueing.
Tad: There's always a first time.
Colby: Tad, I am not a little girl.
Tad: No. You're not. You're hardly my 5-year-old, but that doesn't mean I can't try to keep you safe, does it?
[Colby hugs and kisses Tad]
Adam: Ah, Krystal. To what do I owe this visit?
Krystal: Cut the chitchat. I don't know why you did it, but I know it was you. It's got your greasy fingerprints all over it.
Richie: Hi. I'm here for the interview. I'm Richard Novak. They didn't tell me who I was coming down to see, so, um -- your name is?
Ryan: You can call me "Mr. Lavery."
Aidan: Thanks for putting this together so quickly. Yes. That's exactly what I need.
J.R.'s voice: All I'm saying -- that those embryos -- they're still viable. You can still have Ryan's baby.
Kendall: The way we were? How in the hell is that possible when nothing will ever be the same for my son again?
Greenlee: No, when you and I decided to raise Spike together, we became sisters -- even more than stepsisters through your mother and my father. You and me and that beautiful little boy -- we were a family.
Kendall: Stop it.
Greenlee: No, I'm not saying that Spike is mine. He's yours in every sense of the word, but he's what originally brought us together, closer than we ever were before, because that's what children do.
Kendall: What are you saying?
Greenlee: I'm saying we could be a family again, Kendall. We could heal through the children. Through a brother or -- or a sister for Spike.
Kendall: What? What are you saying? What are you talking about? What do you mean, "a brother or a sister for Spike"?
>> On the next "All My Children" --
Ryan (to Richie): You will stay in Pine Valley. You just have to work for me.
Adam (to Krystal): But you can't bear to stay away from me.
Greenlee (to Kendall): You're not the only mother who's suffered! What about what your husband did to the children that I might have had?
