Zach: Just lay down and rest a little bit.
Kendall: I can't rest.
Zach: Let me draw you a bath. Would you like that?
Kendall: I -- I don't know.
Zach: Hey. Sit down. I'll get it started. [Water runs] Hey, it's me. What do you know about that Zarf character? Well, that we know -- I know why he's here, but why is he relocating? Good. Find out.
Kendall: You're checking out Zarf? You think he murdered Simone?
Zarf: You know this is worth no more than yours. We're all from the same light.
Erin: Hi, it's not -- it's not --
Di: Erin, I'm so sorry about Simone. What can I do?
Erica: Jack and I are over.
Jeff: Well, you know that I've been waiting to hear that. But you seem surprised.
Erica: I'm stunned. I mean, I gave Jack every opportunity to apologize, but he's just completely shut off.
Jeff: Well, lack of communication doesn't necessarily mean that --
Erica: Oh, no. He turned his back on me. In fact, he just acts as if I'm the only one who's at fault, and he came over here to tell me that he had already contacted Livia. He wants the lawyers to handle it now.
Jeff: Erica, you have never allowed any man to dictate to you. The hell with what Jack wants. What do you want?
Amanda: Hey, take a break -- the bag's winning. Trying to kill yourself?
Amanda: Ah. This is a J.R. substitute?
J.R.: What do you want?
Babe: That's my question. I was hoping that I could do something for you.
J.R.: Yeah. Actually, there is something that you could do for me. Get the hell out of my life.
Singer: Yes, I've hit my all-time low
J.R.: Get out of my house, get out of my room, get out of my life.
Babe: I need your attention for a minute.
J.R.: So -- ow! God!
Babe: I'm your wife. I don't want to hurt you. Just listen.
J.R.: All right. Just -- just get it over with. Make it quick and get out of here.
Babe: When we said our vows in the garden on Little Adamís birthday, did you mean them?
J.R.: Yeah. Too bad I was the only one.
Babe: I meant them, too.
J.R.: You broke them.
Babe: So did you, but I don't think it's that unusual.
J.R.: Look, you asked me, and I answered.
Babe: That is why they come up with the line "for better or worse."
J.R.: And it doesn't get worse than you, does it, Babe?
Babe: Maybe. But here's the real question. We have had so much of the worst. Can't we try to get back to the better?
Amanda: So Babe is really back with J.R., for good?
Josh: You know, I could give her anything she wants. And according to her, I make her happy, but yeah, she's with J.R., and she's staying with him.
Amanda: Oh. No wonder you're killing yourself -- and the bag.
Josh: Yeah, well, I'd rather break down the door of the Chandler Mansion. But this is what Babe wants and this is what I'm trying to give to her. You're pretty tight with her, aren't you?
Amanda: Yeah. It's funny how we ended up being friends.
Josh: You know, why doesn't she want to be happy? It's totally screwed-up. I don't know what the hell else to do.
Kendall: Why, Zach?
Zach: Checking things out.
Kendall: To find out who murdered Simone? And you think it was Zarf?
Zach: Everyone -- everyone going in and out of Fusion -- delivery people, cleaning people. They're all being checked out.
Kendall: You know something that I don't, and you don't want to scare me.
Zach: No, I don't. I want to reassure you.
Kendall: Ok. Well, then, I want to know whatever it is that you know.
Zach: You will.
Kendall: How could this have happened? How can Simone be gone? How could she -- how could she have gotten killed?
Zach: That's what I want to find out.
Kendall: And you don't think that the police can handle this?
Zach: If this had happened at the casino, I'd do the same thing -- check out everyone going in and out of the office.
Kendall: But Zarf? I mean, celebrities worth billions of dollars -- they don't run around killing people.
Zach: Can I ask you something? Do you think maybe Simone knew him before all this?
Kendall: If Simone had known him, then she would've gotten the account, not Babe.
Zach: What if she didn't tell you?
Kendall: Simone keep her mouth shut about knowing some rich, famous celebrity who's an idol? No.
Zach: No. Probably not. I'm not hiding anything from you. I just -- I want to eliminate all possibilities. I want us to sleep at night. Ok?
Di: You and Simone were close, huh?
Erin: Yeah, we were. She was hilarious, you know? And she was full of life. It's just hard to believe.
Di: Like she shouldn't really be gone.
Erin: I owe you an apology, because I'm really sorry that I was just so weird a minute ago when you came up to me.
Di: No, no, you had every right.
Aidan: Guys, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go say hello to our visiting celebrity.
Di: I mean, what'd you expect -- I was going to give a battle cry and come and attack you?
Erin: Well, kind of. You saw me in Aidanís arms. The thought did cross my mind.
Di: Well, it didn't cross mine.
Erin: But you got nothing to worry about, trust me. He just gave me the whole "I will always care about you --" you know, "I will always have your back in a big brother kind of way" speech.
Di: And you thought?
Erin: Well, I thought, man, am I lucky to have such a hot big brother.
Di: I mean, Erin, really, because, you know, Aidan and I aren't serious. So if you two have old --
Erin: Wait a minute.
Di: Business to take care of --
Erin: Are you -- offering Aidan to me?
Di: No, I mean, I just --
Erin: You would just step aside?
Di: Well, I don't want to stand in the way of true love. You know, so if you and Aidan can get that going, I'm gone.
Zarf: It's a cocktail napkin.
Zarf: No, it's trash.
Woman: No. It's so much more.
Man: Thank you, you rock.
Woman: Oh, thank you. ††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††
Aidan: Wow. You have come a long way, Freddie, my man.
Zarf: Are you talking to me?
Aidan: What, is there another Freddie Luper? I mean, that is your real name, right? Freddie Luper from Elkhart, Indiana?
Zarf: That person doesn't exist. He's dead.
Jeff: You say that Jack wants a divorce. Do you?
Erica: You know, why doesn't Jack give a damn about what I want? And why doesn't he know? I mean, all these years he's spent with me, and he has no idea who I am.
Jeff: Well, maybe it's the timing. I mean, you've been facing a lot lately.
Erica: Well, see, you understand what I've been facing, but Jack? I mean, Jack just stomps his foot. He orders me to come home. I mean, what does he expect me to do?
Jeff: Erica, most married couples -- they do live together, at least most of the time.
Erica: Well, we did live together most of the time. Well, was he asleep all that time? Was he blind to what I need? I mean, he should know that I can't possibly exist simply as a mother and a -- and a stepmother and a wife and -- I mean, I have my own identity. I have my own needs, too.
Jeff: Look, Erica, you can't -- you can't ignore the role that I've played in this. I mean, the fact that you moved in across the hall from me -- don't you think that that might have something to do with it?
Erica: My God. Not you, too? It's as if the whole cosmos is against me.
Jeff: Erica, I'm merely trying to point out that to Jack --
Erica: Is this a male thing? I mean, is this your ego?
Jeff: Would you get the door, please?
Erica: First Jack decides that he's the center of everything, and now you? I did not move to the Valley Inn to be near you. I didn't even know you were staying there at the time.
Jeff: Well, does Jack know that?
Erica: Well, I told him.
Jeff: Well, sometimes hearing something just isn't enough.
Erica: Well, it should be when I'm saying it. Honestly, it's insulting. I did not cheat on Jack with you or anyone and, I mean, if Jack is threatened by you, ok, well, then that's -- that's his paranoia. That's his problem.
Jeff: Why? Because we didn't do the deed?
Erica: Just what exactly are you trying to make me say?
Jeff: Oh, come on, Erica. Jack has picked up on something between us. I've told you how I feel about you. We've kissed.
Erica: A kiss -- a kiss is just a gentle, sweet, innocent gesture.
Jeff: Well, that wasn't my intent.
Erica: Oh, oh -- so we're back to you again and your intent?
Erica: Well, you know what? From my perspective, I enjoy -- enjoyed -- your company. So if that's a crime --
Jeff: Well, feel free to commit it again.
Erica: I stayed away simply to address my own needs, for my own renewal. It certainly had nothing to do with you.
Jeff: Ow. My ego is taking a beating here, but hang on, this has nothing to do with me.
Erica: But you are living very close by, and that bothers Jack. And what I don't understand is, why did Jack retreat? Why didn't he plant himself at the Valley Inn and -- and fight for me?
Jeff: Well, there's nothing between us but gentle innocence, hmm? I mean, what's to fight?
Erica: Well, Jack still suspects us. He suspects me of canoodling.
Jeff: Oh. Well, you're not even guilty of intent to canoodle.
Erica: Look, how could I marry a man who is so clueless about who I really am? I mean -- oh, look who I'm asking. Huh.
Jeff: Was I just dissed?
Erica: Look, when we were married, I was very young. I was just trying to find out who I was myself. But with Jack -- I mean, we've been together off and on for so long; and of course, I thought that he was the one. But if he doesn't trust me, if he doesn't understand me -- I mean, I'm not saying that I don't love Jack. But why should I try to patch up our marriage when Jack doesn't even know who I am?
Babe: I have spent a lot of time thinking about patching up our marriage.
J.R.: It's too late.
Babe: No, it's not.
J.R.: You cheated on me.
Babe: Yes, I made a terrible mistake, but I am renewing the vow about forsaking all others.
J.R.: You've cheated on me twice.
Babe: And I won't mess up again.
J.R.: Does Josh know about this?
Babe: He's gotten the message.
J.R.: Is that supposed to make me feel better?
Babe: You trusted me. And I betrayed you, but do you know why? Do you know what you did?
J.R.: Yeah -- I trusted you.
Babe: You promised to love and to cherish, till death did we part. You weren't supposed to supply the "dead" part.
J.R.: Back to that.
Babe: Huh. You think? If I tried to kill you, would you be over it? You have been one drink away from violence for a long time now. And a lot of people think that you haven't changed, and you never will.
J.R.: I don't give a damn about what anybody thinks about me.
Babe: You were supposed to be the new you, J.R. You were never supposed to drink again.
J.R.: Yeah, that was before my wife did another guy.
Babe: And that's justification to get wasted?
J.R.: Hell, yeah.
Babe: Ok, look --
J.R.: You drove me there.
Babe: I get it!
J.R.: You might as well have put the bottle --
Babe: I made a mistake. I know I did, and I broke your heart, but why couldn't you just pick up the phone instead of picking up a bottle? Call your lawyer, kick me out -- don't jump out of a window.
J.R.: That was a mistake.
Babe: J.R., you were blind, out-of-it drunk, and with all the promises you made me, that was the betrayal, too.
J.R.: I betrayed you?
Babe: You betrayed yourself and our son. What if Little A would've been there? What then?
J.R.: I would never do anything to hurt our son.
Babe: I know, but we're both hurting him if we don't try to fix this. You said that you would change.
J.R.: I -- I am, damn it.
Babe: By going at it without pain meds?
J.R.: Damn right.
Babe: If you love me, and if you meant the vows that we said in the garden, you can't kick me out.
Kendall: Hmm. I feel safe with you.
Zach: You are.
Kendall: I can break down about Simone if I want to.
Zach: Cry, scream, break things. Do whatever you want. Whatever you want from me.
Kendall: I want you -- always, only you. Investigate the whole town if you have to. I know it's not just for me. I understand what else is -- is bothering you. I know it's been about a year since Ethan died, and now Simone. Brings it all back again for you, doesn't it?
Kendall: We'll take care of each other. And I know Simone loved Ethan so much.
Zach: He loved her.
Kendall: You know, Bianca thinks that maybe Simone missed Ethan so much that she hated the thought of being without him. Well, she's with him now.
Zarf: I don't drink with stalkers.
Aidan: I'm a fan, and I'm a private detective. I like to find out about people. People like you.
Zarf: You'll never know anything about me.
Aidan: Why is that? Chris, you can put that on my tab.
Aidan: Oh, come on, Freddie, man, relax. We're going to play. Don't you want to know my name?
Zarf: Names don't matter. Bodies don't matter.
Aidan: Really? What, people don't matter, is that right?
Zarf: Some donít.
Aidan: Is that why in the -- in the song -- is it "Transitions"? -- That you go into that morphing riff about melting bodies?
Zarf: "I melt out of myself, past you and back. Both and one, nevermore one."
Aidan: Wow. That really -- that's deep. What does that mean exactly?
Zarf: What do you mean after several six-packs? Tell me about them -- the women you're with. I know the redhead from Fusion.
Aidan: That's Erin, and Di.
Zarf: Di. Which one are you having and which one's mine?
Erin: Thank you.
Waitress: You're welcome.
Di: Aidan's looking at you.
Erin: He feels sorry for me.
Di: It could be more than that.
Erin: No. I don't think so.
Di: Last call.
Erin: I'm good.
Di: Going, going --
Erin: Oh, please, it's like you haven't fallen for him anyway.
Erin: Oh, right. So it's not serious, but you want it to be.
Di: Yeah --
Di: I do. But if you tell anyone else, I will tell the whole world that you are a liar.
Jeff: You know, Erica, if I -- if I knew you back then the way I know you now, I think that you and I might still be married.
Erica: Jeff, don't be silly. I wasn't at all what you wanted or needed.
Jeff: No, please. I didn't know what I needed back then.
Erica: You needed a classic doctor's wife.
Jeff: No, I did not.
Erica: You needed a -- a perfect, self-sacrificing, home-entertaining, meal-preparing little woman.
Jeff: No, that is not what I wanted.
Erica: Oh, don't be ashamed. Every man wants one, and why not? They're amazing creatures.
Jeff: Well --
Erica: I just don't happen to be one of them.
Jeff: No, but you're an amazing creature. You just happen to be unpredictable, that's all.
Erica: Well, I'm predictable enough. I mean, Jack should know how I'm going to behave when he throws lawyers in my face. Threats are not the way to my heart.
Jeff: Well, if he -- if he overreacted --
Erica: Oh, don't defend him. Jack should know that I do not respond to ultimatums. I mean, his way or the highway? No contest. It's just crazy. I mean, I left so I could rediscover myself, and instead, I wound up discovering the real Jack. Oh. Am I giving you a headache?
Amanda: I'm not much into self-sacrifice, or doing the noble dance.
Josh: You didn't talk Jonathan away from Lily.
Amanda: Hey, stick to your situation. Babe is with a wannabe murderer. Do the girl a favor -- toss a bag over her head and throw her in the back of a van.
Josh: Think that would work?
Amanda: Hmm. It's worth a try. I'll drive.
Josh: You know, if I didn't know any better, I'd say we were friends.
Amanda: Well, if it's between you and J.R. --
Josh: I win.
Amanda: Something like that.
Josh: Yeah, well, as far as Babe is concerned, it's -- it's over. I'm looking at a lifetime without her.
Amanda: A lifetime of punching-bag aggression.
Josh: I -- I don't want to just get over her.
Amanda: Oh, don't worry -- you wonít. That crud that people tell you about getting over someone you really love? It's fiction -- it never happens.
Babe: Ask me anything.
J.R.: Like, how stupid do you think I am?
Babe: I'll tell you anything you want to know.
J.R.: And why should I believe you now?
Babe: Right. No, no, you're right. I'm just -- I'm just sticking around to stick it to you again.
J.R.: That's not what I think.
Babe: Then what's my angle, then? I mean, that's what you're so desperate to figure out, isn't it?
J.R.: I already know what it is.
Babe: I'd love to hear your theory. No? Let's see. Um -- I'm not staying with you for money because, thanks to my chunk of Fusion, I have my own. Um -- I'm not afraid to lose Little Adam, because no matter what your father's temporary order says, I have your signature on a custody agreement. And -- oh, yes. I have a handsome, smart guy that is just crazy for me. So why wouldn't I be on some jet with my lover and my son headed off to some fabulous island?
J.R.: Well, gee, Babe -- I don't know. You tell me.
Babe: No, really -- guess. What's keeping me here? What is the one thing here that I actually want? I'm looking at him. I have everything that I need, but not what I need most -- you. I still need you. And I want you. Is that really so tough to believe? You haven't stopped needing me, J.R. You may want to think that you don't, but you do.
J.R.: Yeah. You don't need me. You've got Fusion and -- and you've got your lover.
Babe: I want you -- us, our marriage.
J.R.: You're afraid.
Babe: Of what?
J.R.: Of what people would say if you left me while I was busted up.
Babe: Oh -- are you kidding me? They would probably cheer.
J.R.: Then make them happy.
Babe: Listen to me. I need you. And I am not going anywhere until you get it through that fat head of yours.
Stuart: Oh. Ha-ha! Say -- say "Hi, Daddy."
Stuart: Hey, look at him!
Amanda: I bet you miss the days when you didn't give a damn, huh? Oh, my God. You are hopelessly in love, aren't you?
Josh: Why do you say that?
Amanda: Because you would rather have a broken heart than to have never loved Babe at all.
Josh: I never said that.
Amanda: Hmm. Well, get ready. Living in the same town is torture.
Josh: I'll be fine.
Amanda: You think it'll be great seeing Babe occasionally?
Josh: I'll get to see how she's doing.
Amanda: It is worse than never seeing her. Every sighting triggers hope, and that equals pain. Been there.
Josh: You and Jonathan.
Amanda: Not a chance. Never. Jonathan and I can't have anything like what we should have, a life together.
Josh: Remind me never to fall in love again.
Amanda: Well, you better hope you do -- and fast -- with anybody.
Josh: Why, because it would get me over Babe?
Amanda: It's the only cure I can think of.
Josh: You know, I can't -- I can't see her without wanting to be with her.
Amanda: Oh, yeah.
Josh: And every time I see her with J.R., I just -- I can't stand it. You know, I got to get out of here.
Aidan: The prince of rock and I would like to buy you ladies a drink. Would you care to join us?
Di: Don't look now, but there isn't an "us."
Erin: That Zarf is gone.
Di: But if you -- if you want to, we'll take you up on that offer.
Erin: Not me, guys. I'm actually -- I'm going to go home, think about what I want to say at Simoneís memorial.
Di: Take care of yourself.
Erin: Thank you. Thank you for everything. Bye. Bye.
Erin: Bye. Have a good night.
Zarf: Ahem. You're transparent.
Erin: Oh, God. You startled me.
Zarf: You take things too much to heart.
Erin: Zarf, listen, things have been kind of miserable since Simone passed away.
Zarf: And you've had more misery and darkness in your lifetime to last several lifetimes.
Erin: So I'm just going to get my stuff, and I'm going --
Zarf: Don't you yearn for a home that's only light, no more pain?
Erin: Don't we all?
Jeff: Well, I -- I just think that I need to go home and lay down for a minute.
Erica: My crisis is putting you to sleep?
Jeff: No. But I -- I really should go.
Erica: Fine. Well, feel free to stop by the "Erica vents show" anytime.
Jeff: I'll give you a call.
Erica: Jeff, hey, hey, what's wrong?
Jeff: It's nothing, I'm fine.
Erica: Well, no, what were those pills? What's wrong, Jeff?
Jeff: No, it's just an old condition, ok? I'm treating it.
Erica: You're burning up. "Chloroquine" -- what is this?
Jeff: It's top secret.
Erica: Will you stop that? This is not funny. I'll call Joe.
Jeff: No, please, I don't -- I don't want you to upset him, ok?
Erica: Jeff, I am scared to death.
Jeff: Malaria reoccurrence. It's -- it's not a big deal.
Erica: Malaria? Jeff, malaria can be fatal, can't it?
Jeff: Well, it's -- huh -- it's run of the mill when you work in Africa. I'm treating it.
Erica: There's no cure?
Jeff: Erica, please -- I don't want you to worry. All right? Now, I'm doing everything that they can do. I've got the medication, and I'm treating myself. So please, I want you to relax and lay off the phone. I don't want my family upset over nothing. All right?
Erica: "Nothing" doesn't make you sweat.
Jeff: Please, I just don't want my family to be worried. Do you get that?
Erica: Ok. I won't call anyone, if you agree to lie down. No, I mean here. I mean right now. Right here -- where I can keep an eye on you.
Jeff: I could get used to this. Just like old times.
Babe: What are you doing to Uncle Stuart? What are you doing? Come here! You know what? I'm going to let you go and fly in -- oh -- and fly and give Daddy a kiss, but we can't hug. We have to be very gentle. Ready?
[Makes airplane sounds]
J.R.: Whoa. Oh, boy!
Babe: Whoa. Come in for a landing. Gentle.
J.R.: Ah --
Babe: Gentle, he's very sore. Aw, that was sweet of you. Oh, my big boy!
J.R.: Ah, thanks, champ. I feel better already.
Stuart: Yeah, you're looking better. A lot better.
Babe: Can I get kisses? I'm going to get some. Thank you. That was so good. Oh, could you make me a dimple? And smile, huh, you silly. Can you tell me how your Christmas cookie making is coming?
Stuart: Oh, Lucretiaís got it in the kitchen. She's got the -- the icing and all the decorations are all ready.
Babe: Oh, you're so lucky. You are so lucky. Are you going to make cookies for Daddy?
Babe: And maybe for Santa? What about Mommy? Do I get one?
Stuart: Yum, yum, yum, yum. Wait, we'd better get in there. She needs our help.
Babe: How -- oh! Yum, yum, yum. Have fun! I already had something to eat, thank you.
Stuart: He wants to eat her fingers.
Babe: Oh --
Stuart: Say "Bye, Daddy."
Stuart: "Bye, Daddy."
Babe: You silly.
[Little Adam laughs]
Babe: Can't we at least try? If not just for us, for Little Adam?
J.R.: People shouldn't be together if they don't want to be together.
Babe: But I do want you, without the booze. And can't you at least admit that you want me, just a little bit?
J.R.: How do I know that you won't go back to Josh?
Babe: How do I know you won't go back to booze? Maybe we can depend on each other if -- if we know that we're not just doing it for ourselves, but -- but for our family.
Aidan: How does Erin seem to you?
Di: Not bad, considering.
Aidan: Yeah, Erin and Simone got along good.
Di: She's lost family. She's got a pretty good handle on things. We have to live every moment like it could be our last.
[In the dark Fusion office, Erin hears a noise.]
Erin: Hello? Is somebody there?
Erica: Shouldn't you be feeling better by now?
Erica: Oh. If this is a plea for attention, it's working.
Jeff: No. It's just malaria. It'll pass. It's no big deal.
Erica: When? I mean, Jeff, you belong in a hospital.
Jeff: We can't spend our honeymoon in a hospital.
Erica: Our -- what did you say?
Jeff: Thank you for being my wife. We're going to have a great honeymoon.
Woman: I love you, you know, even more than I love the scent of these gardenias. You love them, too, don't you?
Kendall: What were you dreaming?
Zach: What makes you think I was dreaming?
Kendall: Well, you had a big smile on your face. You never smile when you sleep. So it must have been good. What was it?
Babe: Ok, I can hear you if you need anything. I know that you have a lot to think about, so -- should I go? I should go, and -- but I'll come back whenever you say. I'm hoping that it won't be long if -- if you're wanting to give it a try. Are you?
Josh: Babe? Hey Ė
[On Fusionís rooftop terrace, Josh finds Erin reclining in a chair bedecked with ribbons in her hair and a gardenia on her chest, dead.]
>> On the next "All My Children" --
Kendall (to Annie): Ryan wants you to find out who Emmaís father is?
Zach (to Sid): You see anyone near this place, you let me know. Don't let anybody get near my wife.
Bianca (to Zarf): What did you do, follow me here?
Josh (to Colby): Is Babe there?
Colby (to Josh): Babe is dead.
Ryan (to Jonathan): Someone is going to pay.
