[Jack knocks on Ericaís hotel room door while she and Jeff kiss inside.]
Jack: I just wanted to --
Adam: It's very late. What is it you want?
Krystal: Adam, if you can't be nice, could you at least try to be civil?
Adam: Well, if this isn't about J.R., then I assume it's something equally important. Well?
Dixie: Um -- uh -- I -- Krystal and I were -- um --
Adam: You said something about our baby. How the devil could our baby be any of your business?
Tad: Bourbon. Rocks. Why don't you make it a double?
Man: Sorry, man.
Tad: You certainly are. Very sorry.
Man: You got a problem, bro?
Tad: Looks like I have two. Two big, dumb problems.
David: Isn't modern technology amazing? I mean, here we are in this room. The nurse is out there monitoring your -- well, my vitals. And all the while thinking that there's nothing to worry about you in here. Hmm? All is fine and dandy in J.R.ís world. Little does she know -- boy, you really look like hell.
J.R.: Not as bad as you. Hmm.
David: Well, at least mine is the price I paid for victory. Whereas you -- this is the price you paid for learning that I was telling the truth. Babe finally came to realize what a worthless waste you are and hooked up with Josh Madden. I mean, come on, Junior. Who could blame her, right? I mean, look at you. Instead of taking that information and dealing with it like a man, you got wasted. Gave yourself a one-man liquid pity party. Consumed enough courage to put someone in ICU. I mean, isn't it perfect that it turned out to be you?
J.R.: All right, you've had your laugh.
David: Oh, yeah, you're right, I did. I mean, come on, you got to admit, it is pretty funny. But -- I didn't come here for fun and games, Junior. I came here to get a confirmation from you. I want to hear it from you directly, that if you recover, you will never go near my daughter again.
Babe: You shouldn't be here. You can't be here.
[Despite her protests, Babe allows Josh to hug her then pulls away.]
Babe: Oh. I told you, I love J.R. My life is with him and Little A. You shouldn't -- why -- I said such awful things to you. Why are you even here and holding me?
Josh: Because I love you, Babe. And nothing anyone can say will change that, not even you.
Babe: This isn't right. I can't -- you can't be here.
Josh: Look, if you want me gone, all you got to do is scream for help. Or just say it. Say you want me to go.
J.R.: I never want to see that cheating whore again. You both can go to hell.
David: Now, you see that? That is the reason why I never wanted Babe with you in the first place. Because you're so damn stupid.
David: I mean, here you are, lying here helpless, Junior. And you still insult my daughter.
J.R.: And father.
David: Hmm. You are nothing but a spoiled brat who never had to grow up. You are nothing but a worthless punk with delusions of adequacy. You know something? I should have taken you out a long time ago, hmm? I could have spared my daughter the humiliation of being tied to a -- a self-medicated child. I don't know if I mentioned this to you, Junior, but I'm leaving town. So this -- this is our final good-bye. I'm curious -- what is your prognosis, hmm? Did they tell you that you're going to be able to get out of here, so you can continue to make my daughter's life miserable? Hmm? I know, I know, I know. You never want to see her again. But come on, it is inevitable, isn't it? As inevitable as you having a few more drinks and trying to kill her. Now, that is something that I cannot allow. Hmm. You know something, Junior?
David: Got some good news here. I have the power to end your suffering right here and now.
[David stands over J.R. holding up a pillow.]
Tad: Why don't you translate for your friend, the hulk here? He looks like he might be a little confused. Just out of curiosity, how many kegs have you two sucked down already tonight? Oh, wait, no. Forget I asked. It's my bad. That would require math skills. I think what we may have here is just an old-fashioned failure to communicate.
Man: I get it. You're looking for a fight.
Tad: Well done. I'm surprised. Yes. That's something you don't see every day. Brain in livestock. So did I find one?
Man: It's pretty crowded.
Tad: Not outside. It's also better that way if you want to run.
Man: We don't like running.
Tad: Yeah. I can see that. Ordinarily, I'd ask you what you rode up on, but I don't think there's a hog in the world who could carry that much beef.
Man: What do I got to do?
Jamie: Beat the hell out of him. No, go on. Mix it up. Loser rides to the ER in my back seat.
Dixie: Adam, I didn't come to talk to you about your child. I came to talk to Krystal about Tadís.
Adam: In the middle of the night?
Dixie: I didn't know where else to go.
Adam: Yeah, well, go dig for sympathy at Palmerís. Or call Opal.
Dixie: Tad is in terrible pain. He's lost his child, again.
Adam: That's too bad. That's life.
Krystal: What do you expect me to do about that?
Adam: Not a blasted thing.
Dixie: Look, Tad just needs something to hold on to, something to help him get through. Can you help him find some peace about his child?
Erica: Jack -- Jack, you didn't come over here just to turn on your heels and walk away. You want something. What?
Jack: To tell you I won't be bothering you anymore.
Erica: You're lying. Because Jeff is here? You won't speak to me?
Jack: I've said all I have to say.
Erica: Damn it, Jack. Wait.
[Erica closes her door, so she can speak with Jack in the hallway while Jeff stays in her room.]
Jack: It seems to me you're right where you want to be -- living here, sandwiched between your ex-husband and your son. Not exactly life like we planned it, is it, Erica? But, hey, you know where to find me and your family if you want to come by and say hi.
Jack: What else is there to say?
Erica: "I'm sorry"?
Adam: Krystal and I have lives. We have families to tend to. Who started this mess anyway? Who went off to Europe, had her little girl, and then misplaced her? You want Tad Martin to feel better? Well, you -- you take care of it. You've had years of practice.
Dixie: Look, David cornered me.
Dixie: Told me things.
Adam: Well, don't think I want to hear them. The man's a pathological liar.
Krystal: No, wait, Adam -- Adam, come here. Just a minute.
Krystal: Listen. Dixie just needed somebody to listen and to sympathize for just a few minutes. Ok? And then she'll be gone.
Adam: Don't take advantage of my wife's kindness. Don't do it. You want -- you want Tad to feel better? Fine. She needs her rest. Her top priority is our baby.
Tad: I mean it, James.
Jamie: Busting heads -- that's a perfect end to a perfect day.
Tad: Why don't you go buy your girlfriend a drink and let me deal with these two gentlemen? Actually, I thought they were men. Maybe I was wrong.
Man: You thought we were livestock. Come on.
Second man: Moo.
[First man laughs]
Jamie: Wow. I think they might sue for their broken knuckles. So how about we just keep it in the family? Where do you want it? Jaw? Might break some teeth.
Julia: Oh, yeah, I can do triage. I'm sure they have a bar towel I can mop you up with.
Tad: If you want to serve humanity, why don't you take him out of here?
Julia: I'm thirsty. Jamie?
Jamie: Ale -- whatever's on tap. You want another?
Tad: Yeah. I want another bar -- with a little more privacy. Didn't I meet you on a summer cruise?
Julia: Ok -- whew!
Tad: No, no.
Julia: Coming through, coming through.
Tad: James, get off!
Jamie: Ground me.
Tad: Get off.
David: What's the matter, Junior? Where's your sense of humor, huh? Hey, you know something? You might want to do yourself a favor. You might want to remember how scared you are right now. And while you're doing that, I want you to remember this. I will come back, and I will take you out. And I will have fun doing it. And I'm not just talking physically. I'm also talking mentally, emotionally, if you ever hurt my daughter again. So if you are not on your best behavior where my daughter is concerned, you are a dead man. So I want you to tell me, Junior. Go ahead. Tell me how you're going to remember how your gut knotted up, huh? How you were swimming in your own cold sweat. How you wanted to cry --
[David laughs as J.R. tries to strangle David with one hand.]
Colby: Hey, what do you think you're doing?
David: Hey, take it easy!
Colby: Oh! I'll annihilate you! Get away from him!
Josh: You haven't run away, screamed for help, or told me to leave. Do you want to talk?
Babe: I can't be who you want me to be. I -- I --
Josh: You are. You can't help it.
Babe: I am staying in this house. I'm -- I'm going to stay in this bedroom, and when J.R. is recovered, I will be in his bed if he'll have me. I will make my marriage work. I won't risk it for you.
Josh: You know, the real Babe is still in there. Strong, determined. You take a blow that would kill another woman. You may be stunned for a minute --
Babe: No, no --
Josh: But then you get up as if nothing ever happened.
Babe: That is not me.
Josh: You never stop hoping your dreams will come true.
Babe: J.R. is not a dream. My -- my marriage, it's not --
Josh: Do you think if you open up your beautiful heart to him, he's going to return the magic? He can't. He's not made that way, Babe.
Babe: I know J.R. down to his core, and he could be such a good man.
Josh: You can't save your marriage. Not with J.R. fighting against you. He's not going to forgive you for sleeping with me, Babe.
Babe: He's forgiven me for so much before.
Josh: Maybe he did. Maybe once before, he was capable of giving you the love that you --
Babe: I'm the one that wrecked it, but I can make it right.
Babe: I can --
Adam: Babe, are you out here?
Jack: So you're sorry?
Erica: Me? What do I have to be sorry about? You're the one who came over here and delivered an ultimatum without so much as one apology. You come over here on some pretext and then you -- you want to just race off like the injured party. I mean, at the very least, you owe me several apologies. So go on --
Jack: The hell I will.
Tad: From now on, if I ever tell you to leave me alone, you leave me alone.
Jamie: Ok. Ok.
Tad: What is this? Now you're my bodyguard? You're going to hang around, make sure I don't go someplace else? Start another fight?
Julia: Seems possible.
Tad: It's not such a bad idea, actually. Beats the hell out of staying around here. This whole house reeks of David Hayward. I can remember every syllable of every argument Dixie and I ever had about him, before and after the affair.
Jamie: The bad old days didn't send you off to find a brawl. So what did?
Tad: I finally had him where I wanted him. After all these years. I had him on the ground. I was beating the hell out of him. It felt so good. Dixie stopped me. She got me to stop. I wish she just kept her mouth shut and let me finish the job.
Julia: She knew that you couldn't live like that. With blood on your hands. It would eat you alive.
Dixie: I've seen you with Tad. I know you're close to him.
Krystal: I feel awful about Kate. And David making it worse with those lies about that little girl, but I can't --
Dixie: Thanks to me, Tad feels like he's lost his daughter a second time. I can't make him feel better, but you --
Krystal: Dixie, just because you saw us together once at Tadís, do not assume --
Dixie: Krystal, are you pregnant with Tadís child?
Tad: If you think these hands are clean, Julia, you guess again. A little of Haywardís blood on them won't make a damn bit of difference.
Julia: I don't believe that.
Tad: Well, you better start. Dixie's in agony all over again, because she was tricked into thinking she actually had a -- a chance of being reunited with Kate, and it was all Haywardís doing. He set up the entire thing. He's probably out there somewhere right now laughing about it, laughing about our pain, trying to figure out how to keep the suffering going. I finally had one chance to stop him. I'm not going to get another one.
Julia: Yeah, it seems like an ideal fix -- wipe out evil so the person who ruined your life and the lives of the people you love can never do it again to anyone else. But all that pain that you felt -- killing him doesn't make it go away. You have to do that for yourself.
Jamie: Garret Williams deserved what he got.
Julia: Yeah. I just wish I hadn't been the one to give it to him.
Tad: Stop it. Would you knock it off? What is this, supposed to make me feel better? It's supposed to placate me in some kind of way?
Jamie: Dad, once we find Kate, David can't hurt you or Dixie or any of us anymore.
Tad: That's just it. We're not going to find Kate. We don't stand a chance. I'm never going to see my little girl.
Krystal: I told you --
Dixie: I know you told me -- Adam is the father.
Krystal: Look, so it turned out that Emma isn't Kate. My baby is supposed to fill in?
Dixie: I understand why you're letting Adam think that he is the father, but if it's Tadís --
Krystal: Adam is my husband.
Dixie: And he's obsessive about kids.
Krystal: Adam is this baby's father.
Dixie: While you were in the hospital, you had some in utero tests done?
Krystal: And the baby is perfect.
Dixie: Well, apparently, while you were there, David ran some tests of his own. He said your daughter is Tadís.
David: You're going to hurt your brother.
Colby: What did you do to him?
Colby: Why did you unhook --
[Monitor beats rapidly]
Nurse: What's going on? Mr. Chandler, what happened?
Colby: He tried to kill my brother!
David: No, she's out of her mind. I mean, you can see for yourself he's fine. She needs a sedative, a strong one.
Colby: Call security. I want this man arrested. I came over, and he was standing over him like this and my brother was fighting for his life, and then I turn around and I see Hayward with all the monitor-wire things all over.
Nurse: Oh, that doesn't even make sense.
Colby: He wanted you to think my brother was ok.
Nurse: Well, look, I don't know who did what, but you need to calm down. We can't have this kind of disruption -- you're upsetting the patient. Dr. Hayward, when I -- that's odd. Ok, I'm going to have to ask you to leave.
J.R.: She stays -- she stays.
Nurse: This kind of excitement is not good for --
J.R.: My sister stays.
Nurse: Yes, I know. You're on the board, what you say goes. Fine -- stay.
Colby: J.R., are you ok? Do you want me to call security or the police?
J.R.: No. No -- not with you around. You fight like a Chandler.
Adam: I'm prepared to make this thing work for Krystal as well as the rest of the family. How can I be sure of you and your intentions?
Babe: I love J.R., and I want to make him happy.
Adam: Well, that better be true, because if you're coming in this house to tolerate my son, so you can be closer to your son --
Babe: No. I want my marriage to survive this.
Adam: You cheated on him. Every time J.R. looks at you, he's going to see something that he doesn't want to see. How do you fight that?
Babe: I don't know yet. But I have to win back J.R.ís love.
Adam: Yeah -- why? He would've killed both you and Josh if he had a chance. Why do you want to take him back? Do you really think that J.R. can under any circumstances forgive you?
Erica: You know, I don't recall when we took our vows that we decided that we would have public arguments in the hallway of the Valley Inn.
Jack: You know, we would be having this fight in the privacy of our own home, but you needed time away -- for your work, for Josh, for whatever the hell else is going on. Your time is up. So are you coming home or not?
Erica: No, I'm not.
[After Jack departs, Erica walks back into her room and turns to Jeff.]
Erica: I have to go home.
Sean: Oh, what are you guys drinking? Hey, we're going to start a tab. Do you want a credit card?
Bartender: You look honest.
Jack: Hello, Sean.
Sean: Uncle Jack. Hey, good to see you.
Jack: Yeah, I don't think so. Bartender, you serve one drop of alcohol to these boys, and I'll see your license is pulled before they have a chance to take their first swallow.
Bartender: They got IDs.
Jack: Is that right? Wow, these are something. I figure any kid with a computer can make these. I'll tell you what, boys -- why don't you get out of here right the hell now? Ok, other option -- I can call your parents and have them come get you. How would that be?
Sean: Want a drink?
Jack: No, Sean, I'll tell you what I want -- I want you to shut up, sit down over here, wipe that smirk off your face.
Colby: If I would've just kept my big mouth shut, none of this would've happened. I let Hayward play me. I -- I gave the slimeball ammunition, but none of it was supposed to be against you, J.R. I don't want you to get hurt. It -- it was --
J.R.: Babe, it was Babe.
Colby: J.R., she's not on your level, which she proved by being Josh's little -- she was so sure that you would always side with her against me, and she and her mom moved into what used to be called my home, and you kept buying Babeís lies, and then --
Colby: But --
J.R.: Stop -- stop, stop talking.
Colby: Come on, J.R., let me have it. When you're ready, I'm ready.
J.R.: I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.
Babe: J.R. needs to know that I love him no matter what and that real love can survive huge mistakes.
Adam: I love Krystal more than any woman I've ever met. But if she cheated on me, Krystal would be dead to me.
Babe: Well, then, you're lucky, because Mama would never do anything as dumb as I did. She loves you too much -- she's crazy about you, just like I am about J.R. We can be happy here together, Adam. Thank you for giving me the chance.
Adam: Thank your mother.
Babe: Mama will stick with you, as long as you treat her and your new baby right.
Adam: Well, Krystal and I have it made. But you? Well, I guess if anybody's going to pull this off, it'd be Krystalís daughter.
[After Adam leaves, Josh comes out of his hiding place.]
Babe: Adam gets it loud and clear. Do you?
Krystal: Look, you should know better than Adam, better than anybody else that David is the liar king. I mean, how can you believe him after he faked you out about Emma being Kate?
Dixie: I know. I'm just telling you what he said. He said he ran some DNA tests on you and Tad.
Krystal: Dixie, even if he showed you "documentation," I mean, he is an expert at manipulating medical tests, manipulating the results.
Dixie: I know. But I also saw you.
Krystal: Look, it's Adamís and my turn for Davidís payback, and he has set you up to do the dirty work. Dixie, I love my husband. And I swear this baby is his. I can't say anything different no matter how sorry I feel for you and for Tad. I -- I can't let you hurt my family. And this baby can't heal Tadís broken heart.
Tad: Face it -- our last chance of finding Kate went belly up with Greg Madden. It's not going to happen -- we'll never see her again.
Julia: You won't look for her?
Tad: Of course, I'm going to look for her. I'm never going to stop looking for her, even if it takes the rest of my life. That doesn't mean I'm going to have any luck. Dixie's going to be stuck with that nightmare forever -- she gets to hold Kate once and then has to give her away. And I'm stuck with the same old dreams of getting to meet my daughter, getting to hold her hand, look in her eyes, into beautiful eyes that are so much like her motherís. It's not going to happen.
Erica: I left home, because I felt that something was -- was missing inside me. The woman on the magazine covers, the woman at "New Beginnings," leading people to better things -- she was gone. And so I just thought that being away might help me find her.
Jeff: Hmm. She's still lost?
Erica: I still have as much to figure out as -- as when I checked in. I still love Jack, and I don't want to lose what we have. It's time for me to go back. It's time for Jack and me to save our marriage. It doesn't matter to you?
Jeff: Erica, I want you to have everything you need. I learned a long time ago that no one can stop you from doing what's right for you. So I'm not about to try now.
Erica: You're a very good man.
Jeff: And you are an amazing, complex woman.
Jeff: I just want you to be happy, that's all.
[With a kiss on her cheek, Jeff leaves her room.]
Sean: This place is anything but upscale. You're slumming, which means woman trouble. But, come on -- you and Erica will work it out, right? Come on, let's -- let's have a drink, man to man. You know, I've had some troubles of my own.
Jack: You are your own trouble, Sean.
Colby: J.R., you're freaking me out. You're apologizing when you have nothing to be sorry for. That's way abnormal.
J.R.: I didn't believe you. You told me it was Babe, and what did I do?
Colby: You called me an ungrateful liar, which I am most of the time, but not that time.
J.R.: I should have taken your word for it.
Colby: You wanted your wife to be telling you the truth.
J.R.: But you were. I hurt you. Will you forgive me?
Colby: Done, J.R., but let's just get one thing straight -- what I did was heinous, but it was out of love. I wanted my brother back.
J.R.: You got him.
Colby: I do? When I was little, we were close. You loved me.
J.R.: I still do.
Josh: Yeah, I heard every word. You love J.R., you'll do whatever it takes to keep your marriage intact. You've done enough convincing for one night.
Babe: Good. Well, you'll have to believe me.
Josh: You know, you should go upstairs, go to bed, rest, relax. Oh, and Ė
[Josh reaches behind a pillar and pulls out a box.]
Josh: Here. It's peanut butter and banana pancakes. You need to keep up your strength.
Babe: You're crazy.
Josh: That's the hell of it.
Tad: I tell you what -- why don't you two take off and go try to resurrect whatever fun is left in your evening.
Jamie: Hey, I don't mind sticking around --
Tad: James? Do me a favor -- go away. If you two are really back together again, and you're my son, I assume you've got better things to do.
Jamie: Call me if --
Tad: I won't have to. I'm all right.
Julia: Take care.
Jamie: You know, you were right about me and Julia.
Tad: It's taken you all this time to realize that your father's always right?
[Jamie and Julia leave.]
Tad: It's a gift -- blessing and a curse.
Dixie: So you wouldn't let Tad suffer if you could stop it?
Adam: Good, you're finished.
Dixie: Well, yes. Krystal got through to me.
Dixie: If I haven't said it before, congratulations. You're a lucky man.
Krystal: Oh, poor Dixie. I mean, it's just -- it is so hard for her to see Tad suffer, you know, unable to do anything about it. I think she must still love him on some level.
Adam: They share a child. And unless the father is a monster like David Hayward, then that's a lifetime bond. Children, family -- that's what really counts. You're my family. You're the reason that Babe is living in this house. You're the reason I am dedicated to making this all work -- our family together, you and me, Babe and J.R., Little Adam, Colby, and our soon-to-be baby daughter. One family, all together, under this roof. And therein lies the secret of our strength and our survival. And I will decimate anyone who dares try to destroy it.
Krystal: I will be fighting right alongside you, husband.
[Outside Chandler Mansion, Dixie looks suspiciously behind her.]
>> On the next "All My Children" --
Babe (to J.R.): I can take anything that'll help us get through this.
[J.R. flings his water at Babeís face.]
Zach (to Erica): I think it's time we put our hostilities behind and present a united front.
Kendall (to Ryan): Help! It's an emergency. It's Spike.
