[Standing next to J.R.ís hospital bed, Dixie flashes back to the time she conceived and gave birth to him then lost him in a custody battle with Adam. ]

Dixie: J.R., baby?

Adam: Son? Son, we're both here. Mom and Dad.

[J.R. groans]

Dixie: Shh. Sweetheart, listen, now, you're in the hospital, but you're going to be just fine.

Adam: You've had an accident, son. A bad fall. And I know you're hurting now, but the doctors say you're going to feel better real soon.

Dixie: What? What is it, sweetheart?

Adam: What are you trying to say, son?

J.R.: Babe.

Babe: Oh, make it go away, Mama. You ways know how to fix everything. I just -- I need you to teach me how to rewind the last few days -- actually, the last few months -- before I broke my vows, and -- and trashed J.R.ís trust. I made the biggest mistake, ever. I don't get it. I love him so much. How could I let this happen?

Krystal: I know it feels like you're all alone right now. But what you've done and what you're going through -- you'd be surprised how many people have walked in those very same shoes.

[Surf crashes]

Jamie: Why the hell did you just run away from me? I wasn't done talking to you.

Julia: Well, I was. Please, Jamie, just go.

Jamie: No. Not until you spell it out for me. How did we go from being happy together to just leaving well enough alone? What changed? Did someone get to you?

Aidan: Well, with David Hayward, that doesn't surprise me. Ok. All right, well, keep me posted. Give me a call if you hear anything. Bye.

Tad: So don't tell me. Not only has our friend Hayward fled the reptile house, he's abandoned the zoo altogether. Aidan? What do you think you're doing?

[Aidan pulls a gun out of a drawer and loads it.]

Tad: You know, I never had you pegged as a "shoot first, ask questions later" kind of guy.

Aidan: Look, Tad, you're getting way ahead of me, mate, all right? This is not a means to an end. This is just merely an ace up my sleeve. David Hayward doesn't deserve the privilege of dying when he can spend the rest of his sorry life suffering, begging for mercy.

Tad: Yeah. Like from a shot from his own freaky pharmacy.

Aidan: Absolutely. That sounds good to me. I mean, just think of the list, all right? My aunt, Anna, Maria, Di, Dixie. And now Annie. All these women have been hurt by David Hayward one way or another. And men that hurt women like that -- they deserve a -- a lesson in the meaning of pain. And I "Cheers" the guy who ever provides that service.

Tad: Aidan, you're a friend, right? That means anything you come up with, I'm in. Anything but that. That thing is another tragedy waiting to happen. Do me a favor -- just put it back in the drawer, please. We'll get him back. I promise you, he's not going to get off without some kind of payback.

Di: I wasn't sure you guys would still be here.

Tad: Well, how late is it? I got to get back to the hospital.

Di: Tad, I heard about the DNA results. I'm so sorry.

Tad: It's not over. We'll find her.

Di: I know.

Tad: I want to thank you for everything. Dixie, Annie -- you know, all of it.

Di: I just want Kate home.

Tad: Me, too.

[Door closes]

Di: When does somebody get the happy ending that they deserve?

Julia: There is no conspiracy theory, Jamie. There is no mysterious third party. There's nobody convincing me that we shouldn't be together. It's just common sense.

Jamie: Uh -- coon sense would say that two people who like each other should be together.

Julia: There's more to it than that. We're going in different directions. Jamie, you wanted to go off and live in Europe.

Jamie: Oh, no, no, no. I am not doing this again with you. I've heard these same excuses a million times. So how about you just tell me what you aren't saying?

Julia: You're just reading more into this --

Jamie: Julia, I am swimming in lies right now. They're killing my family. Babe lied to J.R., he got so drunk he nearly died. David lied to my dad and Dixie about Kate. They're devastated. I don't know if they'll ever be the same. So I am begging you, please don't do this to me, too. Don't hold out on me. Start talking. Is it that hard? All I want is the truth. Oh, for the love of God! Will someone please just tell me the truth for once?

Julia: Jamie, don't --

Jamie: No. No, no, no, not -- don't blow me off again. I mean it. Just tell me, what is so terrible that you can't say it to my face?

Julia: I love you, all right? I love you.

Babe: I love you. But stop trying to make me feel better.

[Krystal sighs]

Babe: This is my fault. My world is in total chaos, and it's all because of me. And you see the way that people look at me, how much they hate me? It doesn't even compare to how much I hate myself right now. And I know that you and Josh and Bianca and Amanda -- you guys all want me to believe that J.R.ís responsible for being where he is. But he never would've gotten drunk and -- and walked through a window if I hadn't set his world spinning. And now I -- I see my world without him, and I don't even know what's left. Mama, where are you going?

J.R.: Babe.

Dixie: What about Babe, sweetheart? Do you want to see her?

Adam: Son? Don't -- don't worry about Babe right now. Just -- just concentrate on getting better.

J.R.: I want Babe.

Dixie: What, do you want me to call her? I can get her for you. Do you want me to -- to do that?

J.R.: I want -- I want Babe gone for good.

Babe: Hey. Is that my big boy? How about you come here, and I'm going to give you a thousand kisses. Mmm, ha, ha, ha!

Krystal: Hmm -- I told you she'd go bonkers when she saw you.

Babe: Hi! Hi. Did you have a good day? Oh, you got a new --

Little Adam: One of the robots builded.

Babe: Is this a new robot? I haven't seen him. Did Winnie get this for you today? I love him -- new robot.

Krystal: Oh, he had such great day, and it got even better when I told him his mama was waiting to give him some love.

Babe: Of course. What is it?

Krystal: That little corn nut would be lost without you, Babe. Now you know what's left for you to go on with.

Little Adam: Where's Daddy?

J.R.: Get Babe out -- out of the house.

Adam: I'm already on it, son.

J.R.: But -- but --

[J.R. groans]

Dixie: No, you know what? We are not going to do this right now, ok? We'll -- please, sweetheart, shh. You need to rest, ok? Just rest.

J.R.: Don't -- don't let -- don't let her take my son.

Adam: No, no, no, no, that's not going to happen. Never going to happen. Son, I swear on my life. You have nothing to worry about. I'm going to take care of this right now. You get some rest.

Dixie: Shh. I'll be right back, ok? What the hell was all that about?

Adam: You heard what he said just as clearly as I did.

Dixie: No, I'm not talking about him. I'm talking about you with -- "I'm already on it"?

Adam: I'm protecting J.R. I'm honoring his word -- Babe Carey gone for good.

Dixie: So --

Adam: I thought you'd be happy about that.

Dixie: You just want to kind of erase the fact that Babe is married to our son?

Adam: Yes, the sooner the better. Good God, what in the hell's happened to you? You were just as angry with Babe as the rest of us were. And now you're her champion?

Dixie: No, I'm not saying that, but you and I are two people who know firsthand that people make mistakes.

Adam: I don't believe you're saying this to me.

Dixie: Look, I am not saying that Babe and J.R. should get back together, but Little Adam shouldn't have to suffer because of his mother's obvious bad judgment. Now, come on, now. Babe and J.R. can work something out, so that the child doesn't have to be taken from his mother. We can fix this so that it works for everybody.

Adam: I'm going to fix it. I'm going to fix it, all right. Just watch me.

Babe: Yay! We did it! Does it look good?

Little Adam: Do it this way.

Babe: One more, one more. Oh, look at this. This is the highest building ever.

[Babe gasps]

Babe: Ooh.

Little Adam: The robot's going to go on there.

Babe: Of course -- put him up there! I think he should go on top of the building, too. Roar, robot, roar. Look at him -- he's so high, and you see that he says, "Hello, Little Adam. I see you from the top." Is this a -- I really like this robot. Maybe we should ask for a robot for Christmas.

Little Adam: I got the truck now!

Babe: A truck! The robot's truck! Maybe we should get more things for the robot for Christmas.

[Babe gasps]

Babe: What do you think? More robots for Christmas?

Little Adam: Yeah, more robots.

Babe: Should we ask Santa?

Little Adam: Yeah.

Babe: I think I'm going to. Do you know you haven't even written your letter to Santa yet? We've got to get on that. Don't you think? Roar.

Little Adam: No more. We got to put this on top.

Babe: Oh, of course, we do. Of course. You're in charge. Should we knock it over? One --

Little Adam: No.

Babe: No knocking it over? One, two -- knock it over -- three -- oh! Yay!

Little Adam: Get that block.

Babe: Get that Ė hereís a block right there. Right there -- get that one.

Winifred: Bath time, Little Adam. Unless you want me to come back later.

Babe: It is getting late. Maybe you guys should get started, and I'll be right behind you. But Mr. Robot has to go to the bath, too.

[Krystal laughs]

Babe: Let's get him -- Mr. Robot --

Winifred: Oh, Mr. Robot.

Babe: For bath time.

Krystal: Don't let Mr. Robot hog all those bubbles.

Winifred: Come on, sweetie.

Babe: I love you.

Winifred: Oh. I got him. Say "bye-bye"? Bye.

Babe: Thank you for that.

Krystal: Well, I thought somebody should remind you that all is not lost.

Babe: But it'll never be the same, though. You warned me not to say anything to J.R. about Josh, and I should've listened. You should be drowning me in "I told you sos" right now.

Krystal: I'm in no position to throw stones.

Babe: You couldn't possibly understand what this feels like.

Krystal: You'd be surprised.

Babe: Huh. How, if I love J.R. with all my heart, could I have done it with another man?

Dixie: Hi.

J.R.: I'm sorry about -- about Kate.

Dixie: How do you know about Kate?

J.R.: I heard -- I heard Tad talking to me here. He said, "Come back. Your mom needs you. Emma's not Kate."

Dixie: Honey, you came back because Tad said?

[Gritting his teeth in pain, J.R. slowly nods his head. Turning around, Dixie sees Tad at the window looking in.]

[Krystal sighs]

Krystal: You know, everyone does things that they regret, sweetie pie. We all look back on moments in our life and wonder why we didn't act differently. "Hindsight is 20/20" ain't a bumper sticker for nothing.

Babe: Don't go easy on me now. I deserve to hear "I told you so" -- and worse, much worse.

Krystal: No. No, I can never throw that back in your face, Babe. And not because you're doing a fine job of beating yourself to the bone, but because I love you. It's always been the two of us, Babe, and it always will be. And we're in this together more than you know.

Babe: Would you stop being so nice? Be honest. I've been horrible, I am horrible.

Krystal: Oh, Babe, would you stop it? Just stop it.

Babe: No, Mama, I deserve it. You came to me, and I looked you in your face, and I told you to butt out, that you were crazy. You should hate me right now as much as I'm hating myself.

Krystal: Babe, look at me. How could I hate you when I am guilty of doing the exact same thing?

Julia: It really doesn't matter how I feel about you, Jamie. It doesn't change the fact that we're worlds apart in what we want.

Jamie: How do you know what I want? You've never asked me.

Julia: I get that you care about me. I -- but we're on different planes. I -- I'm ready to start a family. You're nowhere near ready to settle down. I want one guy, one guy only. You're still young. How could you even imagine thinking about having one partner for the rest of your life? And the last thing I want to do is to make you feel pressured or uncomfortable. So let's just accept it. We can't be together. And it is what it is, and let's just move on.

Jamie: So -- so, that's it? "Move on"? Even though that I feel the exact same way about you? Yeah. You are the dumbest smart person I have ever met. We are on the same page, Julia. I love you, too.

Di: I wanted -- I wanted Emma to be Kate so badly. I wanted to find Kate so badly.

Aidan: I know -- so did I. You know, finding Kate really did seem like it was going to make everything all right again, and even make up for everything. But --

Di: Agh! Damn it!

[Billiard balls clack]

Di: I mean, how -- how did I listen to David Hayward in the first place? How did I let him convince me to trick them like that --

Aidan: But that was a long time ago, Di.

[Di groans]

Aidan: All right? You posing as Dixie had nothing to do with what happened with Emma. All right, nobody blames you.

Di: Ok, but I blame myself. I let them believe that miracles can happen. And now when they think they've actually found one, it turns out to be another lie. It's just all my life I was looking for a family, and now that I've finally found one -- how is it that I've done everything to hurt them?

[Di sighs]

Babe: What are you guilty of, Mama? What did I do that you did, too? There's something major that you're not telling me.

[Krystal sighs as she closes the doors for privacy.]

Krystal: You're -- you're not the only one who broke your vows.

Babe: You?

Krystal: Huh. It was one night. It was one crazy, mixed-up night. And Adam and I had been arguing, and I left the house, and I -- I went to Tadís, because Di told me that he was in really bad shape. Greg Madden had turned up dead, and he had lost all hope of ever finding his little girl. I was there to comfort him, Babe, and I just -- I took it one step too far. And now, Babe, this child that I'm carrying is not my husbandís. It's Tadís. God help me, this is Tadís little girl.

Tad: What is it? What's wrong? Is he ok?

Dixie: No, no, nothing's wrong. He's -- he's talking, which is a great sign. He's in a lot of pain, but at least he's awake.

Tad: That is good. Listen, we can't find David.

Dixie: Tad, I really have to -- I'm sorry. No, you go ahead.

Tad: Yeah, what is it? No, you go ahead.

Dixie: Please, explain about Hayward.

Tad: No, we can't find David. I mean, he's disappeared. He's totally vacated his cabin. And ordinarily, I'd be thrilled to think we were rid of that parasite, but I just don't think I'm going to let him get away with what he's done. So what were you going to say?

Dixie: Tad, you're the reason that J.R. is back. He told me he heard you talking to him, telling him that Emma isn't Kate and -- and that I needed him. He said that you told him to come back for me?

Tad: I know how much he loves you. I figured if anything could bring him back, it would be you.

Dixie: Thank you.

Tad: Well, don't thank me. I didn't do it just for J.R. The way I see it, you've already been through enough. You didn't need to lose him, too.

Dixie: Hey, we've both been through enough.

Tad: Yeah. We still got J.R. --

Dixie: Yeah.

Tad: And Jamie and Little Adam.

Dixie: Yeah, we do, and thank God. I'm really grateful. I really am.

[Dixie sighs]

Dixie: But we're never going to find Kate, are we? I mean, as much as I love the boys -- and I love them so much -- there's no replacement for that little girl.

Krystal: This little baby may have Tadís genes, but so help me, she is going to have Adamís name, Babe. No one can ever know that this child isn't his. God help me, I wish she was.

Babe: I will not say a word. I promise.

Krystal: Promise me while you're at it that you won't say another word against yourself, Babe. I am guilty of the same rotten thing -- I cheated on the man that I love the most in this world. So if you want to beat up on someone, then you better just turn those fists on me.

Babe: Come here.

[Krystal sighs]

Krystal: Adam. Honey, is everything all right? Is J.R. ok?

Adam: He opened his eyes, started talking.

Babe: Thank God.

Adam: Every breath he takes is excruciating. Um -- he's by no means out of the woods yet. I know this is not the way you wanted this to turn out, but I'm sorry.

Babe: What is it?

Adam: It's a court order giving me temporary custody of Little Adam as long as J.R. is in the hospital. You will pack your bags and vacate the premises before J.R. gets home. And you will leave Little Adam with me.

Krystal: You take it back, Adam.

Adam: It's not possible. These are J.R.'s wishes.

Babe: You actually think that you can get away with this? You think I don't know what you're doing? You tried to sweet-talk me into leaving J.R. and Little A, and I told you to go to hell. And now you are trying to force me out with this. It is never going to happen, Adam. You want to know why? Because I have a document in my safe-deposit box guaranteeing that I will never walk away from my little boy.

Adam: Those custody papers are garbage. J.R. signed them under duress.

Krystal: "Duress"? J.R. gave Babe custody is a mea culpa for trying to murder her!

Adam: Yeah, well, she jumped right on that unfortunate incident and held it over his head as a threat.

Babe: "A threat"? Are you kidding me?

Adam: Sign over full custody of Little Adam, or serve ten years in prison.

Babe: That is not how it happened, and you know it.

Adam: Oh?

Krystal: Adam, I know you are torn up about what happened to J.R., and you want somebody to pay. But if you think that someone is going to be my baby doll, then you better think again.

Adam: If you think your "baby doll" can do what she did and not suffer the consequences, then I think it's you who should rethink things, my dear.

Krystal: I meant what I said in the hospital, Adam. You better not go up against me on this. No way will you take Little Adam away from his mama, no damn way.

Dixie: It just feels so wrong. I took your child away from you, and you gave me back mine.

Tad: Come here for a minute. They're both our children. We both got J.R. back, and we both ache for Kate. I don't know about you --

Tad: Now that I know what it's like to have her back just for a minute, there's no way I'm going to stop looking for her. We're going to find our daughter.

Dixie: We will. I can't wait.

Tad: I'm losing it.

Dixie: Ah.

Tad: When's the last time you got any sleep?

Dixie: Oh, please. Do I look bad?

Tad: Actually, you look terrific.

[Dixie laughs]

Dixie: Sleep -- uh -- I don't know. I actually quite -- uh -- don't remember that. Don't tell me you squeezed some in when I wasn't looking?

Tad: Anything but. Actually, I'm doing ok, though. I think I'm on my 20th cup of coffee. Why don't you go home, get some rest? You go ahead. The hospital Gestapo is gone, I figure I can sit with J.R. for a while.

Dixie: Thank you for everything.

Di: Tad and Dixie together, you know, with their baby girl back in their arms. Why couldn't that DNA test have come back positive? J.R. could've woken up to find his -- his baby sister back home. You know, Kate could've given us back some hope that we might've -- we've lost it.

Aidan: I can't erase what Hayward did, but I can damn well make sure that he doesn't get away with what he's put Tad and Dixie through.

Di: I'm the one that helped David. I'm the one that should be taking the hit, not the people I love. I don't know if I can ever make it up to them, Aidan. I've done such horrible things.

Aidan: Right, and you have tried to make it up to them ever since.

Di: Well, it hasn't been enough.

Aidan: Yeah.

Di: Not nearly enough.

J.R.: When?

Tad: "When" what?

J.R.: When -- when are -- are you going to kick my ass?

Tad: And why would I do that, again?

J.R.: For being such an idiot.

Tad: Shh. You mean for getting drunk? Taking a header through a window? I thought I'd wait for the doctors' ok first, but it's definitely on my to-do list. Actually, technically, I'm not even supposed to be here. Your mom and your dad are the only approved visitors.

J.R.: You're my dad, too. Are you ok?

Tad: Sure. Other than a nap and a cheeseburger, I'm swimming.

J.R.: Kate. You ok about Kate?

Tad: No. There I'm not doing so good. But I'm still looking for her, I'm not throwing in the towel. Your sister is out there somewhere, and we're going to find her. It's just a matter of time, that's all.

J.R.: How is Mom? Really?

[David accosts Dixie in the hospital parking garage.]

David: I got to tell you, that was one touching scene -- you and Tad outside Junior's hospital room? Nearly brought a tear to my eye.

Dixie: What are you doing here, David? You were spying on us?

David: Among other things.

Dixie: What do you want?

David: Dixie, my former love, I'm just getting started.

Julia: I get it. I told you that I love you, and so you feel obligated to say the same thing back to me --

Jamie: Shh, shh, shh. I know what you said. I was there when you said it, and I heard you loud and clear. I do not feel obligated or pressured or confused. I am not too young, I am not on a different plane, and we are not worlds apart. I am telling you right now with a clear mind, no questions, no doubts, I love you. I have for quite some time. So if there's some weird alarm going off in your head about being in love with a younger guy, well, get over it. Because I really don't care that you were born a few years before me. You're beautiful, you're smart, you're funny, and you are sexy as hell. We have a great time together. Bottom line is you make me happy. Now, the only thing wrong with any of this is that I almost let you get away. We love each other, Julia. We admitted it, we're feeling it. So, do you want to tell me what the hell is so wrong with that?

[Smiling at each other, Julia and Jamie start kissing.]

Di: I thought that God was evening the playing field for my sister, and Dixie has suffered for four long years -- Tad and J.R., too. I thought --

Aidan: Yeah?

Di: I thought that, I mean, they were finally catching a break, they were finally going to find some happiness as a family. Maybe it would take away some of the pain that I caused them. I can't let it end like this, Aidan. I will do anything to find Kate.

Aidan: Well, you're not alone.

Di: What can I do? What can I do to help? I want to find David. I -- I want to hurt him.

Aidan: You leave that to me, ok?

David: You seem surprised to see me, Dixie.

Dixie: Try "disgusted."

David: Huh. Well, what's so odd about running into a doctor in a hospital parking garage?

Dixie: Tad said that -- that you had left, you know, that you cleared out your cabin.

David: Yes, I heard -- or, "overheard," I should say. You know, I swear I saw a tear forming in your eye when he mentioned it. Don't worry, I'll be leaving town soon enough. Just wrapping up some unfinished business. Hey, and who could blame me for getting sidetracked after seeing that syrupy-sweet spectacle between you and Tad just now?

Dixie: That really bothered you, didn't it?

David: Try "disgusted."

Dixie: You still don't get it, do you? You never reached me the way Tad did. I may have been in your bed, but Tad was always in my heart.

David: Oh, I get it now. Uh-huh. Believe me.

Dixie: Look, you want to come after me, that's fine, I understand that. But it's not Tadís fault that I chose him over you. How sick can you be? You promised me that I could give him back his little girl.

Krystal: Adam, you say you love me?

Adam: I do love you.

Krystal: Then respect me -- and respect our marriage and drop this right now.

Adam: Our marriage means everything to me. I have no intention of jeopardizing it.

Krystal: Well, if you force Babe to leave without her son, that's exactly what you're going to be doing.

Adam: I'm honoring his wishes! This is his call.

Krystal: But you're pulling all the strings to make it happen.

Adam: And you'd do the same damn thing if you were in my shoes, and you know it.

Krystal: I mean it, Adam. If Babe goes, then I go with her. And this child goes with me, too.

Adam: I won't let you do that.

[Tearing their clothes off while kissing, Jamie and Julia drop down on the sand.]

Tad: I don't think it's hit your mother yet that Emma isn't Kate. It's hard. We're going to have to start over again, from scratch. Your mother's going to need you. We all do, now more than ever.

J.R.: I -- but I thought we found her.

Tad: Me, too.

J.R.: I'm sorry, Tad. I really -- I really wanted another little -- little sister.

Dixie: You know, you are really evil.

David: Is that so? Yeah, well, even the evil can be of assistance sometimes.

Dixie: What are you babbling about now?

David: You seem so dead set on giving Tad back his little girl. Well, if it'll make you feel any better, it's not too late.

Dixie: Huh. Go to hell.

David: Talk to Krystal. She's carrying Tadís child.

Krystal: I am serious, Adam. You separate Babe and Little A, and I will walk out that door, and I will take this child with me!

Babe: Mama, please, you don't have to do this for me.

Krystal: No.

Adam: Charlotte is my baby, too. You can't just -- you can't take her.

Krystal: God help me, I can take this child this very second.

>> On the next "All My Children" --

Jeff (to Erica while a stunned Bianca looks on): I'm falling back in love with a married woman.

Kendall (to Zach): Commit me, lock me up. I have gone completely over the edge.

Krystal (to Adam): Are you threatening me?

David (to J.R.): Don't worry, Junior. I'm happy to take care of you.
