Adam: What difference does it make how long he's been in surgery, Palmer? One -- one minute is too damn long. No, the quacks in this hospital refuse to give updates. But if you love my son at all, you will get every member of the board on the phone this instant and find out if my son's going to live. Yeah.
Jack: Bianca? What is this -- J.R. fell through a window?
Bianca: Yeah. He -- he jumped. He was so drunk, he had no idea what he was doing, and he just ran at it and -- and jumped through.
Bianca: It was so scary.
Jack: You were there? You -- you saw this?
Bianca: Yeah. Oh, Mom was there, too.
Jack: Come here. So where's your mom now?
Jeff: I had to see you and make sure that you were ok.
Erica: Josh. I -- I have to find Josh.
Bianca: Why did I do it? Why did I get into it with him? I -- I could see how drunk he was, how out of control, how -- how angry. What, did I -- did I think that I could talk him down?
Jack: You can't worry about this now, Bianca, really.
Bianca: I should've left the room the minute I saw the empty bottles. I should've gone downstairs and gotten help. What the hell was I trying to prove -- how brave I was? I -- I just -- I provoked him. I -- I egged him on. I -- I pushed him to -- If J.R. dies --
Jack: No. Now, you listen to me. You are not responsible for J.R. being on that operating table right now. That man's problems started long before you found him drunk in Josh's room, and J.R. brought it all on himself.
Krystal: Babe? Babe? Honey. Did you hear anything? Listen, whatever you're thinking, you just forget it, ok? You focus every thought in your pretty head on your husband pulling through surgery. Whatever you need, ok, I'm here -- anything I can do.
Adam: There's nothing you can do. It's too late. Your daughter has destroyed my son.
[Knock on door]
Kendall: Oh, my God, Josh. Are you ok?
Josh: Yeah, I'm fine, but J.R. might be dead.
Kendall: Ok. Well, your timing couldn't be better. Uh -- Spike is with Ryan, and Zach is working late tonight, so you know what I'll do? I'll get you cleaned up, and we'll have Bianca put you on her plane, out of the country before anyone knows what happened. Did -- did anybody see you?
Josh: Wait -- whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a second.
Kendall: Or did someone follow you here?
Josh: You think I killed J.R.?
Kendall: And that's a stretch because why?
Josh: Well, it's not so much of a stretch, but it's not nearly close to what actually happened. But I do think it's kind of cool how you were planning my escape. If I actually decide to kill someone, you'll be the first person I come to, no doubt.
Kendall: Ok. Um -- why don't you plug your ears if you don't like me saying this, but you are my brother, Josh. So why are you acting so surprised that I would want to help you? Now, what the hell happened?
Josh: J.R. finally let the truth sink in about me and Babe after Babe confirmed it. So he got drunk -- big surprise -- came looking for me in my room at the Valley Inn. Bianca was there, she ran interference when he told her that he was coming for me, then Erica showed up. They wouldn't let him leave, so he dives head-first out of a window. I live up on the fourth floor. I found him lying in the alley, barely clinging to his sorry excuse for a life.
Kendall: Oh, God, ok. Why don't you go and take a shower and this -- it's freaking me out looking at you with that blood on your shirt. Just why don't you go get cleaned up? Josh? I'm really glad that you're ok.
Erica: Josh must've gone to the hospital.
Jeff: You're running from me.
Erica: I don't run from anyone or anything.
Jeff: No, you're trying to pretend that nothing happened.
Erica: What happened is that -- that J.R. got drunk, and he went after our son.
Jeff: Between you and me, you're going back to your marriage as if everything is fine, ignoring the very serious problems that made you move out in the first place. Do you think that going back to Jack is going to make you really happy? I don't think so.
Erica: What are you saying, Jeff? Are you saying that I should have a cheap affair with you just because my marriage has hit a rough spot?
Jeff: You think that's all I want is a fling? I'm imagining a future together. I'm completely spellbound by everything you do, every word you say. Erica, there is nothing cheap about this. I'm falling back in love with you. This is very, very real.
Jack: You know, I'm surprised that Erica didn't push J.R. herself out that window. I mean, given everything he's done -- almost killed Kendall, humiliated Josh with that disc of his, and of course, your fall in Florida.
Bianca: Oh. Yeah, Florida. I -- I can't get it out of my mind. I -- I keep thinking about how I felt when J.R. tried to keep Miranda from me. And I still don't know if he pushed me, but I have to believe that he didnít. Nevertheless, tonight, when he was threatening to go after my brother, I was furious. Everything that I felt that night in Florida just came flooding back to me, and I had to stop him, no matter what.
Jack: Well, I just thank God that neither you nor your mother were hurt.
Bianca: I don't think J.R. would've hurt us. I -- he threatened to, but I don't think he would have. He was self-destructive. And I know that you're going to think I'm crazy, but there were moments tonight when I could see the old J.R., the -- the one I used to call my friend, the one that Babe can't turn her back on, the guy that she's in love with. He is crippled by pain and -- and loss. And I'm not excusing his behavior, and I'm not excusing the way he's dealing with it, but he had a lot of opportunities to hurt me tonight, and he didnít. In the end, he took it all out on himself, and out of anger and fear, I made bad choices, and I can't help feeling partially responsible --
Jack: Stop it.
Bianca: For J.R. --
Jack: Stop it. I want you to stop blaming yourself for all this, ok? Come here. I will tell you exactly what I want you to do. I want you to go home, I want you to see your daughter, and I want you to get some rest. I have to stay here to check up on Lily, and then I will phone you with an update on J.R., ok?
Bianca: No, I can't do it. I can't leave the hospital until I know that J.R. is going to live.
Jack: And what if he doesn't live, Bianca?
Josh: You know, ever since I came to this stinking town, I've had a million reasons to leave it, but yet here I am still sporting a Pine Valley address. Why, you ask?
Kendall: Because you have two new sisters, a mom, a dad, and a really cute nephew you just can't walk away from? I know. You're here for Babe.
Josh: She's the only thing in my life that's ever made sense.
Kendall: , So what did Miss Thing say when you spilled the beans to J.R.?
Josh: Well, she slapped me and then told me we were a mistake.
Kendall: She -- she should be kissing your feet for opening her eyes to the truth. I mean, you -- you totally called it -- J.R. can't take bad news without making someone else pay for it. If he hadn't have mistaken that window for a door, who knows what condition you'd be in right now.
Josh: Yeah, well, it's J.R.'s condition that has Babe freaked out right now.
Kendall: Oh, come on. If Babe can't see now how twisted J.R. is, then she's a bigger idiot than I thought.
Josh: Ok, don't turn this on her.
Kendall: Hey, if you were so sure what I was going to say, then why did you come here?
Josh: That's a good question. I didn't want to be alone, all right?
Kendall: You're not. Ok? I'm trying. I have been trying for months to understand this thing that you have for Babe. I even tried convincing her and letting her know that you were the obvious choice, even though I know you can do a hell of a lot better. I kept my mouth shut when you decided not to tell J.R. about the affair, and even now when you decided to tell him, I'm still sticking by you. But you can't tell me to keep my mouth shut about Babe when all she does is hurt you and stomp on your heart again and again. I just -- I want you to be happy, Josh. And you claim that Babe can do that for you, but I got to be honest here -- I have yet to see it with my own eyes.
Josh: Well, take my word for it.
Kendall: Ok, so you think you two still have a chance?
Josh: Well, J.R. kind of messed that up, as well.
Kendall: You didn't do this to him. J.R. did this to himself, ok? Babe has got to see that. And after what he did to me, to Bianca, what he almost did to my son and to you, whatever happens, J.R. deserves it.
Josh: I had a chance to let him die, Kendall. And I don't know why I didn't.
Adam: Just how long are you going to sit there playing the heartbroken wife, Babe? Hmm? And who is this performance for anyway? We all know what you've done. We all know you're responsible for J.R. lying in that hospital room.
Krystal: Adam, would you stop it? Babe feels terrible.
Adam: Is this some sort of plan? You figure if you publicly grieve for my son, then I won't fight you for Little Adam? Hmm? Well, I'm going to personally see to it that you never see my grandson again.
Krystal: No, you can't mean that.
Adam: Oh, can't I? She's admitted to adultery. She as much as pushed J.R. back in the bottle. She might as well have pushed him through that -- that window with her own bare hands. Well, you better believe I'm going to fight for custody of Little Adam, and I'll win, too.
Krystal: Adam, Babe is here because she loves J.R., and she wants her marriage to work.
Adam: Oh, come on. How many times have I heard that? "Itís all through with Josh, Adam." "Adam, Babe loves J.R. and only J.R." How come when I went to Fusion looking for J.R., I found her on the roof having just met with her lover? I'll be damned if that bastard's going to raise my grandson. Not going to happen.
Krystal: Ok. Look, that's enough, all right? Let's go. Come on, let's go.
Tad: The front desk wouldn't give me much. Have you heard anything?
Adam: I know how much you love your daughter, Krystal. But deep down inside, you know that everything I said is the Godís honest truth.
Krystal: The heck I do. Don't do this, Adam. Don't go after Babe -- you are breaking my heart.
Adam: I'm breaking your heart? My son is clinging to his life in there. And Babe is the reason why.
[Having overheard Adam and Krystal arguing, David walks over to a nurse.]
David: Geri. Do you know anything about J.R. Chandler's case?
Geri: In surgery. Last I heard, they were trying to stop the internal bleeding.
David: That's never good.
Geri: He'll be lucky if he makes it off the table breathing.
Dixie: Tad? What's going on? Where is he?
Tad: He's still in surgery.
Tad: That's all they're saying.
Dixie: Oh. Well, he's going to be ok, isn't he? I mean, they're not really worried, are they? Oh, God. Tad, tell me that he's going to be ok. Tell me that our son is going to be ok.
Di: Listen, Dixie, J.R. is so strong. If anybody can get through this, he can.
Tad: Dixie --
Dixie: You. Adam told me what you did. This is all your fault. How could you do this? How could you do this to J.R.? All the times that you lectured me, that you told me not to hurt him? How could you? He loved you. He -- he adored you, he worshipped you. I thought you cared for him. How could you break his heart like this?
Tad: This isn't going to help J.R. Come on.
[On the hospital's sun porch, Tad comforts Dixie while David eavesdrops from the doorway.]
Dixie: What if I'm being punished, Tad? What if all this is happening, because I'm a terrible mother? What if I'm meant to lose all of my children? I mean, first the miscarriage and then Kate and now -- now J.R.?
Tad: Dixie, J.R. is not going to die. He's going to make it. I know he will.
Dixie: How can you be sure? I mean, that -- when I asked you before, that look in your eye --
Tad: I'm not saying I'm not as scared as you are. I'm just telling you he's young, he's strong. He's going to survive. We are not going to lose J.R. And if Emma is Kate, we're not going to lose her, either.
Dixie: But I swore to Annie that I wouldn't try to take Emma from her.
Tad: I know. But if she's our daughter, we are going to be a part of her life. I promise you.
Erica: You're lonely. Look, you told me so yourself. You said that you haven't been the same since Mary died.
Jeff: This isn't about Mary.
Erica: So, if you're trying to create an instant family or something with Josh and me --
Jeff: It isn't that at all.
Erica: I'm married. And I love my husband. And you're living in the past.
Jeff: No, I -- Erica, I know who you were when I married you, and I can see who you are now. I'm falling for this Erica, the woman standing in front of me. You're very different from the woman I eloped with years ago.
Erica: You're right, I am. I've changed. And one thing I've learned is that having an affair is -- is no way to save a marriage.
Jeff: I adored you back then. You were incredibly sexy and fun and unlike any woman I'd ever known. And all of that -- all of that hasn't changed. It's just that then I didn't -- I didn't realize how selfish and headstrong you could be.
Erica: Well, I still live my life the way I want to.
Jeff: Look, if I was that crazy for you back then, I -- I'd be nuts not to be head over heels for you now. You're even more gorgeous, but even more importantly to me, it's -- it's the way that you've learned to open your heart that really made me look at you with new eyes, the way you handled Josh when he found out that we were his -- his parents and how you dealt with me coming back to town. Erica, you're as close to perfection as ever and any man would be crazy not to want you.
Erica: You know, I think that Jack is probably at the hospital with Lily and -- and I bet that Bianca has gone there, too.
Jeff: All right, I'll take you.
Erica: And Josh, I --
Jeff: I can give you a ride.
Erica: Oh, no, no, no, no. I can call a car.
Jeff: No, please, Erica. I've said everything I need to say. Let me drive you to the hospital.
Kendall: Well, maybe your doctorly training automatically kicked in, you know? You saw someone lying in a heap bleeding to death. Maybe you didn't have a chance to think things through. Maybe you just went into save-life mode, even though the life you were saving was completely worthless.
Josh: It's very possible. I mean, they do drill it into your head -- A, B, C, airway, breathing, circulation -- but I think I was selfish. I think the reason why I didn't let J.R. bleed to death is because I thought I'd never have another chance with Babe. She'd never get over it. Or maybe I just wanted him to live, so that if she did leave him for me, he'd have to see us together the way I've had to watch them this whole time.
Kendall: Well, whatever the reason, if J.R. does live, it's because of you. Don't think I'm ever going to let him forget that.
Josh: Yeah, well, the only thing I want from that guy is the one thing he didn't give me, which was a fair fight. You know, I am so ready to beat the hell out of that drunken sponge.
Kendall: Ok, listen, this is J.R. we're talking about here, all right? He fights dirty. And he might've killed you.
Josh: No way. I would never let that happen. No way would I ever let him stay standing to hurt Babe again.
Kendall: Ok. I know maybe this is a long shot, but do you think maybe you can just completely forget about Babe?
Josh: Well, maybe if you forget about Zach, sis.
Kendall: Why do you only call me "sis" when you're giving me the finger? Wait -- where are you going?
Josh: To the hospital. I want to see if that SOB is still alive.
Kendall: Who's driving? Ok.
Krystal: There is only one person to blame for J.R. being in the hospital and that's J.R.
Adam: You're saying J.R. tried to kill himself?
Krystal: That's possible, Adam.
Krystal: I know that he got so loaded that he didn't know the difference between a window or a door.
Adam: He turned to alcohol, because his wife cheated on him.
Krystal: He turned to alcohol, because he has a disease, Adam. And it reared its head at an ugly time. It was the booze that made your son crazy and fall four stories, not Babe.
Adam: No, I think you're deluding yourself.
Adam: None of us would be here if your daughter hadn't decided to make love to another man, again. And I will rot in hell before I let Babe and Josh Madden raise my grandchild.
Krystal: You know how much I love you, Adam. You know that. And there is only one thing in this world that can tear us apart and that's you. Don't you do this. I know you're hurting, and I know you want somebody to suffer. But if you do this and you take Little Adam away from Babe, then I will take your child away from you.
Adam: You're not serious?
Krystal: Do I look like I'm joking?
Adam: Krystal, you know how much I love you and this baby you're carrying. I -- how much Charlotte means to me.
Krystal: And you mean the world to me, Adam. The last thing I want to do is keep Charlotte from you. But if you don't back off Babe, then you give me no choice.
Adam: Babe destroyed my son! How can you ask me to just look past that?
Krystal: I don't expect you to be happy about what Babe did. But if you keep threatening to take Little Adam away from Babe, then you better know that I am going to do everything in my power to fight back.
Jamie: Damn it. Babe cheats, J.R. drinks. Oh, and Josh -- don't get me started on that piece of garbage. You know what? I -- I should've broken J.R.'s hands when I had the chance, but he swore to me that he wouldn't drink again. Either way, I should've been there, because I would've stopped him no matter what it took.
Di: Jamie, this is on Josh and Babe, not you.
Jamie: Julia, Julia, Julia, how is he?
Di: Tell us he's ok.
Julia: Well, all I know is he's still in surgery, which is encouraging. It means he's still fighting. He could come out of this just fine. I'm -- I'm sorry I don't have any more information.
Erica: Sweetheart, hi.
Bianca: Oh, hi.
Erica: Hi, honey. How -- how is Lily?
Jack: She's fine. She's -- she's fine. A little groggy from the sedative still, but they say she can come home.
Erica: Oh. Oh, well, that's wonderful. Great, and J.R.? I -- I take it he's still alive?
Dixie: How can you give me back Kate when I gave Annie my word?
Tad: Because I didn't give her mine. I'll be the bad guy if I have to.
Dixie: The only reason she let us do the DNA test was because she believes that we won't try to take her daughter from her.
Tad: No, no, I'm not trying to take her. No, Annie is the only mother that Emmaís ever known. You helped me to realize that. But if that's our little girl, she was taken from us. Now, I'm not about to give up my right to visit her or spend time with her or tell her that I love her, and neither are you. I'm tired of losing. You and I and James and J.R. are all going to be there to watch her grow up. J.R.'s going to live to watch his little sister grow up. Believe it.
[In the waiting room, Krystal comforts Babe with a hug, while Adam watches them. Bianca weeps as Jack stands by Erica who shares glances with Jeff. Di sits by Jamie who stares at Julia then hugs Dixie. Josh walks in with Kendall and approaches Babe.]
Josh: So, how is he? How's J.R.?
[Everyone gasps as Adam pushes his daughter-in-law aside and slaps Josh. Tad catches Josh then attempts to stop him from hitting Adam back.]
Adam: How dare you --
Tad: Adam -- Adam --
Adam: How dare you --
Tad: No! Stop!
Jeff: Leave my son alone!
Tad: Get him off!
Jeff: You want to go after someone, come after me!
[Accepting the invitation, Adam goes ahead and takes a swing at Jeff who falls backwards.]
Erica: No, no.
Adam: Bring it on, Martin.
Erica: No, Jeff!
Dixie: Josh is the reason that our son is here, Jackson.
Kendall: No, that is the reason he's here.
Erica: Why are you so quiet, Babe? Once again, you have us all at each other's throats.
Bianca: Mom, it's not her fault.
Erica: Excuse me?
Kendall: Don't defend her, Binks.
Jamie: You know, you got a hell of a lot of nerve showing up here when my brother could be dying.
Tad: It would be a good idea if you left now.
Erica: Don't you dare tell him what to do. Josh didn't force J.R. to choke down everything in the minibar. And he didn't coerce your precious son into threatening my daughter Bianca again. No, if it was up to J.R., Josh would be dead.
Adam: Works for me.
Krystal: Adam --
Erica: Oh, don't you dare come to my defense, Krystal. Because if it weren't for that tramp of a daughter of yours seducing my son, none of us would even be here. I mean, not that I can blame her entirely. Look who she's married to.
Krystal: You say one more word about my daughter --
Dixie: You know what? She doesn't have to. I will. I thought you were the one person on this earth who could make my son happy. I told him to trust you. I told him that you would have a wonderful life together. How could you make me lie to my son?
[With hate in his eyes, Jamie stares hard in Josh's face then stalks out.]
Di: Dixie, come on. Let's go sit down.
Krystal: Back off Babe, Dixie.
Adam: She's right, Krystal. She's right. Every word she said is true. Babe is to blame for J.R.'s life caving in on him. It's all you.
Babe: You're right, Adam. I am to blame.
Babe: No one should be blaming J.R. or going after Josh. I'm the one that's responsible. I'm the one that's -- I'm the one that's wrecked my marriage. I'm the one that's wrecked everything. This is all because of me.
[Babe storms out of the room.]
Jeff: Josh -- Josh --
Josh: No, no, listen. You don't -- none of you --
[Against his father's wishes, Josh follows Babe out.]
Erica: Are you all right?
Jeff: Yeah, I'm all right.
[Jack rolls his eyes at Erica and Jeff, while Tad takes Dixie's hand, and Adam receives a disapproving look from Krystal.]
Julia: I thought maybe you could use this.
Jamie: I'm fine, Julia. I don't need you hovering.
Julia: It's just a cup of cruddy coffee from the nurses' station. You don't have to have it if you don't want it.
Jamie: Since when do I ever turn down a cruddy cup of coffee?
Jamie: You know, this isn't just Babe and Josh. My brother did this, too. And I really want to hit something.
Julia: You're mad at J.R. for turning back to booze.
Jamie: What Babe did was pathetic and wrong, but for J.R. to grab a bottle again, it just --
Julia: Oh, yeah, he definitely could have handled it in a lot of different ways.
Jamie: Yeah. Like not getting wasted and going after the nearest person to attack. I mean, he could have been smart. He could have divorced Babe and fought for custody of his son.
Julia: An alcoholic can obsess over a hangnail. It doesn't take much if they're looking for an excuse to drink.
Julia: And this was a whopper.
Jamie: I've told J.R. if he ever had another drink, I'd start rooting for Josh.
Julia: Are you?
Jamie: I want Josh Madden out of all our lives for good. I don't care if he is my cousin. J.R.'s my brother, and he is always going to come first.
Julia: I'm so sorry that you're having to go through this.
Jamie: I want to tell you something. You're probably not going to want to hear it. But I'm going to say it anyway.
Di: Hey, Tad --
Tad: I can't stay here anymore.
Dixie: You're coming back, aren't you?
Erica: You really better get this cleaned up. It doesn't look good.
Jeff: No, no, I'm fine.
Erica: Yeah, I know, Doctor. But promise me, you will have somebody check that out.
Jeff: I promise.
Kendall: Binks, you know what? You shouldn't be here. Why don't you just go home?
Bianca: Oh, no, I can't go. I -- I have to make sure he's going to be ok.
Kendall: Josh -- Josh will be fine. We can't stop him from running after Babe.
Bianca: No, not Josh. J.R.
Kendall: No, no, no. Please -- please tell me you're not worried about that stupid little slime.
Bianca: I know, I know. What he did was horrible. But I can relate to how he was feeling.
Kendall: Is this about Maggie?
Bianca: J.R. reacted in the worst possible way to Babe cheating on him. But you know what? When I found out that Maggie was cheating on me, I stuck my tail between my legs, and I ran home to Mommy. Instead of staying in Paris and fighting for the woman that I love, I told her to work out her feelings on her own time, and I would be waiting here if she ever wanted to come back to me. How pathetic is that?
Kendall: That's -- that's not pathetic. It's civilized. It's adult.
Bianca: It's lame. It's weak. You know, I had no problem standing up to J.R. tonight, so why couldn't I have just stood up to Maggie? Why didn't I stay and fight for the person I want most in the world?
Jamie: I'm willing to bet that you're going to tell me to kiss off. But I have to get this off my chest.
Julia: Would you spill already?
Jamie: What we had -- um -- it was good. And it wasn't casual. Not for me, anyway. I want you back, Julia.
Jack: Well, you must be exhausted, huh?
Erica: No, actually, I'm kind of wound up. Must be the adrenaline.
Jack: Well, it was a hell of a night, that's for sure. I understand your party went very well. I'm glad. I'm sorry I couldn't be there. But now that you've got all that behind you, you can move back home.
Erica: Actually, I -- I'm not ready to do that just yet.
Jack: And why not?
Erica: Well, because I still have a few more follow-up details to take care of regarding the party. And now there are some new crises brewing at the show which need my time and attention.
Jack: Is it "New Beginnings" that needs your attention, or is it Jeff Martin?
Adam: I don't care if I woke you up, Barry. Yes, I know it's late. That's why I have you on retainer. Shut up. Listen, this is critical. I need you to gear up for a custody battle. Well, I'm not sure yet. It'll either be my grandson or my new baby girl. Or both.
Tad: I just spoke with my father. He's still in surgery.
Dixie: That's it?
Di: That couldn't be all he said.
Tad: It's still touch-and-go.
[Babe is startled when Josh gently touches her shoulder as she sits sobbing.]
Babe: Leave me alone. Did you hear me? I never want to see your face again.
>> On the next "All My Children" --
Kendall (to Adam): Josh is a Kane. You make a move on him, we make a move on you.
Erica (to Jeff): I'm sorry I got so angry at you tonight, because I wanted you to kiss me.
Babe (to Josh): Did you work J.R.'s fall to your advantage, so he'd be out of your way for good?
