Ryan: Wow, you are beautiful. I love you.
[Kendall opens her eyes and lovingly gazes at Ryan.]
Josh: Dr. Martin, you got to tell me what my father's done. Why did he feel like he had to leave town?
Erica: I -- I came as soon as I -- I heard that you were in an explosion.
Josh: Yeah, my dad's boat blew up.
Erica: Well, I'm -- I'm so glad that you're not hurt.
Josh: You made this trip just for me?
Erica: I'm -- I'm here visiting Kendall.
Josh: We were just talking about you.
Joe: Josh believes that you and Greg are keeping secrets from him.
Josh: My dad's gone, I think it's permanent, and I want to know why. I want to know what he did to you.
Greg: I'm not negotiating with a live person. I'm talking to a recording. They'll listen to it at their convenience. I don't want to bore you. What do you want to hear about? Want to hear about Kate, Tad and Dixie’s precious little girl?
Jamie: Ball game?
Tad: Uh -- no. No, just trying to stay current about our friend Dr. Madden.
Jamie: Somebody found him?
Tad: No, not yet. When they do, I'm going to find my daughter.
Adam: J.R., you don't have to go to prison. There's still time to save yourself.
Babe: How do you think that I can save J.R.? He's pleading guilty.
Dixie: You can convince him to change his plea.
Babe: I can't do that.
Dixie: Oh, but you can watch him get locked up in prison? Do you know what kind of men he's going to be in there with, what could happen to him? The J.R. that we know and love is not going to come back the same. Can you live with that?
Babe: You think that this is easy for me?
Dixie: Oh, no, come on. I know what he did to you was absolutely horrible. He got drunk, and he lashed out again, and an innocent woman was hurt.
Babe: But you don't want him to take responsibility for that?
Dixie: Oh, no, he just took responsibility for it. Weren't you here? Didn't you hear him? I'm incredibly proud of him. So what good is locking him up in prison going to do? Look, if I could stop this, I would, but I think you may be J.R.'s only hope.
Babe: J.R. has made up his mind.
Dixie: And you have to help him change his mind, or he is going to spend the next five years in prison.
Babe: What do you want me to do? J.R. wants to pay for his crime.
Dixie: Ok, that -- yes. So let's figure out a way that he can do it so he can pay for his crime, but it's not going to cost him his life. Because outside, we can help him. We can get him all the support that he needs to stay sober. But if he goes in there, he may not have access to alcohol, but he'll have access to all those drugs that you know that they smuggle in there.
Babe: Don't you think that I hate this, Dixie?
Dixie: Look, the point is going to prison is going to destroy his life one way or the other. Look, it -- don't you get it? The main reason that he's pleading guilty is to redeem himself to you.
Babe: No, I did not convince him to do anything. This is --
Dixie: I know -- he's trying to prove himself to you. Don't you get that? He's trying to prove himself that --
Babe: Dixie, he did this for himself, because he hates what he's done. That's it.
Dixie: Would you believe that if he hadn't pleaded guilty?
Babe: No, I wouldn’t.
Dixie: Ok. So the guilty plea is for you, and you have to stop him from making it.
Adam: You can reverse your plea. I'll call in the biggest legal guns in the country. We can make this go away.
J.R.: You can't control this.
Adam: But you can. It's not for you. It's for your son. Little Adam needs his father. How could it possibly benefit that child if he grows up while you're in prison?
J.R.: I don't need this right now, Dad.
Adam: It's exactly what you need --
Reporter: Mr. Chandler, do you have one moment? Can we ask you --
Krystal: Give it up, Geppetto. He's a real boy.
Adam: Excuse me?
Krystal: J.R. cut the strings way back, he's made his own mistakes.
Adam: So he's going to pay for them with his life? No, I don't accept that.
Krystal: But it's J.R.’s decision. If you can't support it, at least try to respect it.
David: Hello, J.R. enjoying your last moments of freedom? In a few hours, you're going to be thrown in a hole like the worthless sack you are, and Babe will be free -- free from you. Free to make her own life with her son. I guess you didn't think that attempted murder would be such a big, fat favor for the rest of us, huh?
Tad: He's got enough to deal with. If you don't leave him alone, I'm going to break your neck.
David: Hello, Tad. Came to join in the fun? Greg Madden must be tied to a chair somewhere, huh?
Tad: Neither Greg Madden or J.R. is any of your concern.
Greg: Kate was absolutely gorgeous from the second she arrived in this world. She was just like her mother. She was also like her father. The set of her little jaw -- that was all Tad. Of course, you'll have to take my word for it, unless you get me out of here. If you don't get me out of here, you'll never see her. Poor Mommy. Poor Daddy. I wonder who's actually going to listen to this. Maybe Tad’s friend Aidan. Ryan. J.R. Del. Del must be awake by now. Poor pathetic Del. Di's pathetic, too. All pathetic. Who else would have a reason to bury me like -- Ryan Lavery and Zach Slater want to score points with Kendall. I only wanted what was best for that baby from the very beginning. Kendall wanted to give me that child. She was relieved when I presented her with the option of adoption. She wanted me to have that baby. If a woman doesn't love a child from the moment of conception, she doesn't deserve to be a mother. She doesn't deserve to have a baby.
Kendall: Isn't life fantastic?
Ryan: It is now, yeah.
Kendall: What have I missed?
Ryan: What have you missed? Uh -- wow. Nothing really. I mean, Zach’s running around doing something for a little while, and Erica’s here someplace, and Bianca was here, but she just --
Ryan: Stepped out.
Kendall: So I'm all yours.
Ryan: Yep. Yep. You ok with that?
Kendall: Mm-hmm. Yes, of course. I'm great with that. Were you -- were you talking? I -- when I woke up, I swore I heard somebody saying something.
Ryan: Uh -- yeah, I -- I just said that you looked beautiful.
Kendall: Well --
Kendall: You look beautiful, too. So does that male nurse -- what's his name, Lou? Like 5'7", 250 pounds.
Ryan: Great. Great. Thank you.
Kendall: He's got the comb-over and the unibrow.
Ryan: Thank you so much. I feel really special now. Thanks, Mom.
Kendall: Oh, my God, that's me, I'm a mom. Who would've ever thought that I would love to hear that? "Mom."
Kendall: "Mamacita." "Mumsy." I'm Mom -- wow. So -- um -- so Zach told me, filled me in on everything that went on during my little nap.
Ryan: Yeah, you kept us all pretty busy.
Kendall: And you finally sided with Zach.
Ryan: I was always pro-you, and I was always pro-Spike. It was -- it was literally an impossible decision.
Kendall: I love you.
Ryan: Do you want to go and -- you want to go and see the most incredible little boy in this country?
Kendall: Yeah, I do, but I got to tell you, though. I'm -- I've only walked, like, once, and it was not good.
Kendall: So this is going to be my second walk --
Kendall: And I'm a little wobbly.
Ryan: I can carry you if you want, you know?
Kendall: No, I -- here, let's -- let's start with the slippers.
Ryan: I'll even put your slippers on for you.
Kendall: Oh, wow.
Ryan: See? Is that ok?
Erica: I told you -- the night your father left, he -- he drugged me.
Josh: No, Erica, way before that. You were panicked when Kendall went missing. You ranted about my father, said he had done something terrible to her, because he had done something to you.
Erica: Well, I was upset. I -- sorry, I don't remember what I said.
Josh: Well, I do, and I want to know what he said.
Erica: I don't appreciate this.
Joe: Tell him, Erica.
Josh: So you do know?
Erica: Joe, what are you doing?
Joe: Erica --
Josh: Forget her, you tell me.
Joe: It's not my place.
Josh: Dr. Martin, you know it's the right thing to do. Whatever you think of my father, he -- I still deserve to know why he was driven out of here. Please tell me.
Erica: I would like to do this privately.
Erica: I told you when we were trapped after the Mardi Gras Ball that you and I had a lot in common. I idolized my father. I never questioned anything he did. I blamed my mother for everything that was wrong in my life. Finally I realized that my father was nothing, nothing that I thought he was. He had done something to me, something that was so horrible that -- that I had blocked it all those years.
Josh: Well, Erica, the subject is my father. Did my father do something just as horrible to you?
Erica: Sometimes there are things that we're not meant to find out. And, honestly, if we do find them out, it can make life unbearable.
Josh: Erica, my father is gone. I need answers. Don't smoke me.
Erica: You know that your father was attracted to me.
Josh: That was a long time ago.
Erica: No, your father held on to that fixation all this time. And he finally decided that he -- he wanted to act on the fantasy that he and I should spend our lives together. He tried to make that happen.
Josh: Listen, if this is all that garbage about him drugging you, and you ending up on some park bench, skip it. I want the old story. I want to know how this all started.
Erica: He's gone. Greg is gone. Let it go now.
Josh: I don't believe that my dad would just skip town just because he struck out with you.
Erica: I've nothing else to tell you.
Josh: Then thanks for nothing.
Dixie: Think about your son. What is it going to be like for him to visit his father in prison? What is it going to be like for J.R. to be a father after being in there? I wish that I could fix this, Babe, but I can't. I -- it's up to you. Oh, come on, what?
Babe: You want to blame someone for screwing up J.R.’s life? How about you take a look in the mirror, Dixie?
Dixie: I know, I know. Don't you think I hate myself for screwing up his life?
Babe: No, I have watched J.R. fall down and pull himself up, just to get slapped right back down. How could you do it? How could you run off and let your son think that you were dead?
Dixie: I know I was wrong.
Babe: And then you just leave to have a baby, and you give her away, even knowing what she means to Tad and J.R. and Jamie? How insane is that? My -- my mom was a single mother. She didn't just hand me off to someone else. My mama was so flat-busted-broke, she didn't even have a pot to spit in, but she kept me, and she raised me, and I can always count on her.
Dixie: Yes, everyone agrees that I have done an excellent job of screwing up my children's lives, ok? I would just like to do something right by them for once.
Babe: Yeah, you know what? It's about damn time! I have been on J.R. for ages to forgive you, not for you, but so he would be ok.
Dixie: And I'm very grateful for that. Thank you very much. But we both know that J.R. is not going to listen to me.
Babe: So, what, you come to me? You make me responsible? You are supposed to be able to trust your husband. He is supposed to love and protect you, but mine? My husband wanted me dead, and I would be, if the timing hadn't been off.
Dixie: I guess you haven't forgiven him.
Babe: Forgive him for trying to murder me? Are you kidding me? And what about Kendall and her child?
Dixie: I understand. It's horrible. And I'm not asking you to just forget about it.
Babe: And I will never forget about it.
Dixie: But neither will J.R. He is going to remember what happened for the rest of his life. All I am asking is for you to give him a chance to keep him from going to prison. Give him a chance to make up for his mistakes.
Bianca: Mom, what's going on with Josh? I -- I saw him. He -- actually, he nearly ran me down.
Erica: Well, my goodness, Josh was in an explosion. I'm sure he's still very upset.
Bianca: Well, he seemed devastated. What did you say to him?
Erica: Evidently, not what he wanted to hear.
Bianca: Mom, I -- is this about what his father did to you? You know, we never talked about that.
Erica: Oh, there's Kendall.
Kendall: Hey, most wonderful, perfect boy. Hmm.
Ryan: It's wild, isn't it?
Ryan: I mean, he's -- he's real. Huh.
Kendall: And he's here. He's really here.
Ryan: Yeah, he is.
Kendall: Hmm. Mom and Bianca.
Kendall: Well, looks like we are going to have a little family reunion there. Yeah.
Ryan: Hello, hello. Would you care to join the costume party?
Bianca: Ah, hospital theme. Very smart. Hello, nephew.
Ryan: They're both getting stronger by the minute.
Erica: Why don't you admit it? You're still in love with Kendall. Fight for her. Win her back. Get her away from Zach.
J.R.: Has Babe called?
Krystal: Babe's not going to be late for your hearing. Don't worry about that. J.R., while we have this moment, I just -- I want you to know how proud I am of you.
J.R.: Sure you're proud. You'll be thrilled that I'll be where I can't hurt Babe anymore.
Babe: Most women would have dumped J.R., divorced him, taken his child, and a whole lot more.
Dixie: You are not most women.
Babe: Hey, sweetheart. What's wrong?
Winifred: He woke up crying for his daddy.
Babe: Come here. Hey.
Babe: Oh. My big boy! Do you remember that your daddy told you that he was going to be away for a little while? You remember that? It's going to be kind of like, you know, when Grandpa Adam -- he goes on those business trips, but he calls you, and he sends you those cards? Well, your daddy -- he is going to call you as often as he can. Because he loves you more than all the stars in the sky. And he's going to be thinking about you all the time. He is.
Little Adam: He is.
Babe: Yes, he is, because you are his biggest, best boy in the whole world. And he wishes that he never had to leave you, but he -- he has to, honey.
Little Adam: He has to leave me?
Babe: He does have to leave you, baby, I'm sorry. But he's going to think about you, ok? Ok.
J.R.: I don't even know where she is.
Tad: I'm sure Dixie’s on her way.
J.R.: I'm such an idiot. I was this close to forgiving her, and she's dropped off the radar -- she and Babe.
Tad: All right, that's it. I'm going to call them and see what's taking them --
J.R.: No, to hell with them. I don't need anyone.
Julia: Hey, I know you.
Di: Hey. Yeah, I know. Sorry, I've been busy.
Julia: Well, I was hoping since we haven't been seeing you at Wildwind very much that maybe you were spending more time with Tad.
Di: Hmm, he's been busy trying to find Kate.
Julia: Well, you could help him with that. You've been his assistant before.
Di: Yeah, Tad’s got it covered. Julia, how long can he take it not knowing where his little girl is?
Julia: Well, we'll get that out of Greg Madden. And we'll get some justice, too.
Greg: Julia Keefer -- there's another hopeless case. She wants a child to fill her emptiness. She wants a child to see what the child can do for her, not what she can do for the child. She only has to look around to see the result of bad parenting -- J.R., Jamie. Kate deserved better than that. I gave her to parents who raised her well. No child should be with parents who's going to warp them.
[Josh walks in the park and sits on the bench next to Greg’s “grave.”]
Greg: I saved my son. I gave Josh all the love and guidance every child deserves. And my son is proof of a good upbringing. He is top of the list. Not like Jamie and J.R. -- useless. If I had been around when they were born, I would've given them to parents who would've raised them well. They would not have ended up being the useless human beings that they are today.
Jamie: J.R., if there's anything I can do --
J.R.: Save it.
Adam: J.R., listen to me --
J.R.: I have. It's time for you to shut up.
Jamie: Hey -- hey. Don't blow me off. I just want to help you.
J.R.: Good. Then turn around so I can get the hell out of here and catch a plane to the South Seas.
Jamie: Do what you have to do.
J.R.: You, the family morality cop, advising me to make a break for it?
Jamie: Under the right or wrong circumstances, we're all capable of anything.
J.R.: What happened to you?
Jamie: If Greg Madden gets hurt in this process, I really don't feel that's a crime. Now, I'm not comparing Babe and Kendall to Madden, and I hate what you did to them. I'm just saying a few months ago, I would've felt it wrong to choke the life out of Madden to get what I want.
J.R.: And now you don't?
Jamie: Now I'm saying do what you have to do. This is your choice, J.R. You're the one who has to live with the consequences.
J.R.: And so does my son. If I go to prison, I'll still be able to see him, and I set the right example. If I don't go, if I run, I'll never see him again. That's a life sentence and not a very good way to show my son how to run his life.
Jamie: Not your style?
J.R.: I owe you for -- for coming here, giving a damn.
Jamie: Hey, it's what brothers are for, right?
J.R.: Look, it means a lot to me. When I'm gone, you have to take care of this Madden guy solo.
Jamie: When I get anything out of Madden, I'll let you know.
J.R.: All right. You made it.
Dixie: I'm sorry I held us up.
Babe: Are you ok?
J.R.: I'm better now. And I'm happy that you're here, too.
Dixie: I'll leave you two a few moments. Any progress on Madden?
Zach: It's only a matter of time.
Erica: You know Kendall’s worth fighting for.
Ryan: She's happy, Erica.
Erica: Because she and your son are alive, not because of Zach.
Ryan: Look, you know that I love you, and I appreciate it. I do. But Kendall and Zach are committed to each other, and I am not going to get in the middle of that.
Erica: Ryan, you are destined to be in it for the long haul. There's no avoiding it.
Kendall: Ok, what's going on?
Bianca: Oh. I walked in on a big blowout fight while you were still out of it, and I heard Mom threaten Greg Madden.
Kendall: Well, Mom loves to threaten people, so that doesn't really mean anything.
Bianca: No, no. She was serious, Kendall. She was dead serious.
Kendall: Ok. Maybe you're overreacting.
Bianca: Dr. Madden sure believed her. And now he's -- he's disappeared.
Kendall: Ok, and Mom was the one who made him go away? No, no. You know what? I'm sure -- I'm sure Dr. Joe or Josh Madden, one of them will know.
Bianca: Uh-uh, no. A half an hour ago, I saw Mom talking to Josh. I couldn't hear what they were saying, but he was furious. Mom is in trouble. Mom is in serious trouble.
[Children play in the park]
Amanda: Hey. What happened to you?
Josh: I'm not feeling very social right now.
Amanda: Fine. Tell me where your father is, I'll leave you alone.
Josh: You know what? You come to bash on my father, don't expect my help.
Amanda: Your father is still my friend despite what the rest of the world thinks. You don't believe all those sick rumors? Josh, look, your father is a great man. He's been really wonderful to me.
Josh: Amanda, he asked you to be a surrogate.
Amanda: Finally, I was going to do something right.
Josh: Did he bother to tell you who the father of the baby would be?
Greg: I want Josh to know that I love him. Josh? Josh, if you ever listen to this, I love you, son, so very much. I performed a miracle to save your life. Erica came to me when she was married to Jeff Martin. She wanted me to terminate her pregnancy. I saved your embryo. I gave your mother the child that she so desperately wanted -- you, my precious son -- that I could also have a piece of Erica in you. Erica knows. That's why she hates me. How could she hate me for saving you?
Greg: What the hell was that?
Amanda: Your father doesn't tell the surrogate who the father's going to be. The donors are kept strictly –
[A guy with a Weedwacker works above Greg.]
Amanda: Anyway, the donors' identity are kept secret, and I don't need to know who it is because your dad's cleared them, so they've got to be great.
Greg: Someone's up there. Help! Help me! Help me!
Josh: Can't he see we're trying to talk? Hey. Hey. Hey. It's a big park. Can you take that someplace else for a while? So why did you go along with my dad?
Amanda: Be a surrogate, you mean?
Amanda: Your dad understands what my mom put me through, and I felt so guilty. I mean, she killed people, she wrecked so many lives. And your dad kind of helped me see that I could balance the scales. I have the power to bring in a new life and sort of make up for life being taken. I was feeling really great about it and then certain people had to butt in. They convinced your dad I wasn't ready or something.
Josh: Well, maybe you should just hold off for a while.
Amanda: Don't listen to everyone else, ok? You and I both know what a fantastic man your dad is. You talk to him, you tell him no matter if everyone else turns against him, I will be on his side.
Greg: Down here! I'm buried! Help me!
Bianca: Greg Madden terminated Mom’s pregnancy?
Kendall: Mm-hmm, ages ago. And Mom wanted him to do it. She went to his clinic in Manhattan.
Bianca: That is a bizarre coincidence.
Kendall: Yeah, well, Mom doesn't think it's an accident, especially after Greg manipulated me into thinking I should give up Spike for adoption.
Bianca: Wait a minute. Dr. Madden --
Bianca: Convinced you to --
Kendall: Yes, yes. He is good, he is good in --
Bianca: He would have to be.
Kendall: In a horribly bad way.
Bianca: Ok, well, then maybe -- maybe Greg Madden did some kind of head trip on Mom, either recently or -- or a long time ago.
Kendall: Could be. Well, whatever secret Mom is keeping about Greg, I will get it out of her.
Ryan: I mean it, Erica. I mean it. Leave Kendall and Zach alone.
Erica: When your son is full grown and about to start a life with a woman who you know is all wrong for him, talk to me then.
Zach: You kept J.R. from running.
Jamie: I didn't have to.
Zach: He's not going to get away with what he did to my wife.
Jamie: He's not trying to.
Zach: He will pay, one way or the other.
J.R.: I didn't think you'd make it.
Babe: I said that I would. What is it?
J.R.: No matter what happens, no matter how long I'm away, just know that I love you. That won't ever change.
Bailiff: All rise! Court is now in session, the Honorable Judge James Beeker presiding.
Amanda: You'll tell your father? Anything he needs, I'm here.
Josh: I can't tell him. I have no idea where he is.
Greg: You can't keep me in here. You'll never win, because I will never give up! I will not tell you where that little girl is as long as I'm in this box -- never. You will never find out where she is, because I will not give in! You won't win, because I will see you in hell first!
Josh: Did you hear that?
Ryan: You got your water, the call button -- I don't know, what else do you need? Do you need -- you want TV? You got --
Kendall: Yeah, ok. I'm not the baby here.
Erica: But it's so nice to have someone who cares. Don't push yourself.
Kendall: Ok. Oh, my gosh, you guys. Look. It's magic.
Kendall: All by myself.
Ryan: See you, honey.
Reporter: That's exactly right. And, John, the atmosphere was strained as Adam Chandler, Jr.'s family filed into the courtroom. The hearing's just getting underway --
Judge: Two counts of attempted murder, one count each of aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and aggravated assault on an unborn child. Mr. Chandler has decided to plead guilty to each count against him.
Lawyer: He has, Your Honor.
Judge: Mr. Chandler, you are aware that by pleading guilty to these charges, these crimes will become part of your permanent record, and serving your sentence will not expunge that record.
Lawyer: My client understands the consequences of his guilty plea.
Judge: You entered this plea freely? No one at any time used any coercion or any other tactic to elicit your plea of guilty?
Lawyer: They did not, Your Honor.
Judge: And you do not wish to change or deny this plea? You are aware that once I pass sentence, you waive the right to any and all avenues of appeal?
Lawyer: Uh --
Judge: Let your client respond. Do you understand me, Mr. Chandler?
J.R.: I do, Your Honor.
Judge: And you want to enter your guilty plea now?
Babe: No. J.R., no.
[Kendall, Bianca, Erica, and Ryan watch the court proceedings on the hospital TV.]
Reporter: I'll check back in as soon as we get word that -- wait. There's something happening. The hearing has been disrupted.
Judge: Mrs. Chandler, you will sit and remain silent, or I will have you removed from --
Babe: I don't care. Don't do it, J.R. Don't plead guilty. You didn't do it.
>> On the next "All My Children" --
J.R. (to Babe): By pleading not guilty, you're saying that there's a chance for you and me?
Tad (to Dixie): You did this, didn't you?
Kendall (to Erica and Bianca): I'm not just going to lie here like the vegetable J.R. almost made me and do nothing. There's no way I'm just going to sit back and shut up.
