Amanda: Dr. Madden, this is a palace! It's -- it's Trumpish. It's amazing!
Greg: Well, I'm glad you like it.
Amanda: "Like"? I mean, the whole place, the whole island -- it's like a movie set. The spotless beaches and the perfectly manicured lawns -- this is all yours? Is that grass real?
Greg: What else would it be?
Amanda: It's too perfect. It's painted or something.
Greg: We, I'm so glad you like my little island.
Amanda: "Like"? Who wouldn't like paradise?
Greg: This is my greatest achievement. It's my life's dream, to award women who are giving the greatest gift any woman can give. The least I can do is make them feel safe and secure.
Amanda: And like they've died and gone to heaven.
Greg: You can be as happy and as private as you like. Nobody from the outside world can bother you here.
Zach: Here it is.
Zach: We'll find out.
[After Zach stops
Zach: Try to be patient, please.
Zach: Yes, I called her. I told you I left a message. I couldn't get her.
Zach: Yes. Doing this for her, as well, if I can -- hey.
Ryan: Zach? Hey, it's Ryan. Look, there
was an accident at Fusion.
Erica: Oh, I just can't stop thinking about
Ryan: Don't -- don't go there.
Erica: What --
Erica: That little -- what are you doing
here? First you try to hurt Bianca, now
Ryan: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Take it easy. Take it easy.
Babe: I only wanted to come --
Erica: What, to hurt her? To kill her?
Babe: No. I had nothing to do with this.
Erica: Oh, come on! First, you march your way into Fusion, you want to take over, and who's in your way? Who can stop you -- Kendall. So you figure out a way to remove her?
Ryan: No, look, look. You know, there's absolutely no reason --
Erica: Oh, there's plenty of reason, believe me. Of course, there is.
Babe: Look --
Ryan: I'm sorry, we're tired. Erica's very tired. I'm sorry.
Babe: No, no --
Erica: Don't make excuses for me, Ryan.
Babe: Please, please, I'll go. I -- it's
just that -- did J.R. come to check on
[At the construction site, J.R. remembers
Joe's voice: We don't know if
J.R.: God, Kendall. What have I done?
Ryan: I haven't seen J.R. since --
Erica: Oh, you think J.R. will protect
you? Not if you did this to
Ryan: I got this, Erica. I got it. Look, J.R. was here. He was here, he left. I don't know where he went.
Babe: Ok, ok. Thanks. I'm sorry to bother
you. Just know that I am praying for
Ryan: Ok, thank you. Thank you.
Erica: But is she praying that
Ryan: Erica. I would love to have somebody to blame, too. I would, I would love to have a lot of things. I would love to pound my fists against a wall, but none of that is going to help Kendall -- none of it. Right? Where are all the doctors?
Ryan: I mean, where -- where is everybody?
Why isn't anybody coming out and telling us that there's changes or that
Erica: And that the baby is fine.
Ryan: I mean, I need -- I need
Julia: Good morning,
Julia: I don't know if you can hear me, but if you can, I'm going to be running a few tests on you in just a minute. I'm going to check your reflexes. Oh, everybody's worried about you -- you wouldn't believe it. I got a call from Simone this morning. She -- she wanted to send you some flowers, but I told her that you couldn't have any in here, so she sent a big teddy bear over to the children's ward. I thought that was so sweet of her. And I think Ryanís going to be here in a little while, and, well, I told him not to worry. I know that you just fight like a tiger, but, I mean --
Julia: You always had, so -- uh --
Julia: You must be so --
Julia: Your kind of place, but we'll just get you out of here as soon as we can.
Zach: I don't think he'd keep those files in a computer.
Zach: It's hollow back here.
Zach: Well, let's see.
Zach: No, I'm not going to take the whole thing apart. I'm going to see if there is an alarm. Ah.
Zach: Watch the nails.
Zach: Mm-hmm. Lets me bypass the sensor on this thing.
Zach: Sometimes. Let's hope I'm lucky, as well. If you hear an alarm, start running. Hey.
Zach: We'll just have to see. Ready?
[Behind the bookcase, Zach finds a hidden room filled with records.]
Zach: All right. It's hermetically sealed in here. Keep humidity out, temperature the same. It's probably computers and files -- look at this.
Greg: Do you like the view?
Amanda: Do you have crop-dusters filled with perfume fly around every couple of hours?
Greg: No. There are gardenias and hibiscus all growing beneath the balconies.
Amanda: You think of everything.
Greg: I try. But if I've left anything out, will you tell me?
Amanda: Well, I haven't seen any men except for staff. Are all your guests women?
Greg: Ensuring the happiness of couples who cannot conceive or carry their babies to term.
Amanda: So all these women are surrogates?
Greg: Most of them have been implanted with the fertilized eggs of the future parents, but some of them have donated their own eggs as well as their time and their bodies. They're amazing women.
Amanda: So, you give them a place to stay until they have their babies?
Greg: I take care of everything during their pregnancy, and then I'll help them if they have any other goals they want to achieve.
Amanda: You give them money?
Greg: If they need it. Most of these women are nothing short of angels.
Amanda: Is this what you were thinking of -- me here -- when you said I could make a difference in my life?
Greg: It crossed my mind.
Amanda: Well, I've never even thought of having a baby.
Greg: Well, there's no reason why you would. This isn't for everyone, Amanda. In fact, it's for damn few.
Amanda: It's so unselfish.
Greg: Surrogacy requires a great deal of strength. You have to be determined to do everything you possibly can to make the world a better place. There are millions of women out there aching to have a baby, but they can't have their own child. The women here -- we owe them a great debt, what they're giving to the world.
Amanda: Giving a life -- does that make up for taking one?
Babe: No. There is no change. I've been looking for you.
J.R.: Waste of time.
Babe: How are you doing?
J.R.: What does it matter?
Babe: It was an accident. They happen.
J.R.: Yeah, but she didn't deserve this. She's pregnant. She's been such a mess, whether or not she should keep it, and now -- now -- and now it's not even -- it might not even happen.
Babe: Kendall and her son, they could pull through.
J.R.: Yeah, but
Babe: Who should it have happened to?
J.R.: What the hell are you talking about?
You donít even like
Babe: I feel terrible for her, and we were Ė Kendall and I were starting to get along better.
J.R.: This never should have happened.
Babe: This isnít anyoneís fault.
J.R.: Why was she there? Why did she even walk in here?
Babe: I was with her when you called. I Ė I
told her everything that you were going through over
J.R.: You told her?
Babe: I thought that she could help you, and since you were coming here, she wanted to come.
Zach: How about the other journals? Did you look at these?
Zach: Just go back a little -- did you look at these or no?
Zach: Aha. He didn't bother to disguise these.
Zach: It's about animals -- animal experiments. It's all the way from mice, rats, chimps.
Zach: Embryo transplants.
Zach: Hey, listen to this. "I'm finally ready. I found her."
Erica: Oh, how is she?
Julia: No change, but you can see her if you like. Just one at a time for now.
Ryan: You go ahead.
Erica: No, that's all right. You go ahead.
You -- you talk to
Julia: Can I get you anything?
Erica: Oh, no, no. I'm -- I'm fine.
Erica: Oh, Jack, Jack.
Ryan: Hey. Hey there,
Ryan: I need you to do something for me. I need you to -- I need you to wake up.
Ryan: Just open your eyes.
Ryan: You've got to come back to us.
Ryan: You have to try real hard.
Babe: How did this happen?
J.R.: I told you I didn't see it. And if I
would've, I would've stopped it. How did it happen?
Babe: No, I mean, how could this fall?
J.R.: Well, I don't know. Why don't you ask the morons who stacked it? Idiots!
Babe: I told them that it was dangerous -- the workmen? I said that it needed to be secured so there wouldn't be any accidents.
J.R.: Well, I guess they just didn't listen, did they?
Babe: Well, they said that they would take care of it.
J.R.: Apparently they didn't get around to
Babe: Why did you want to meet me in this room? Why did we have to talk in here?
Ryan: Come on,
Ryan: You got to give me a break here,
Ryan: You have to wake up. Ok? This isn't you. You have to come back to us. I just -- I can't take -- I can't take seeing you like this.
Erica: Oh, some construction materials
piled too high. Maybe
Josh: Erica. I'm -- I'm real sorry about
Erica: Have you heard something?
Erica: Something new about
Josh: No. Joe is talking to Dr. Mayer and Dr. Solomon right now.
Erica: Well, shouldn't I be there?
Josh: No, listen, if there's anything to
pass along, you'll be the first to know, but I just want you to know there may
be some hope. If
Greg: The sins of the parent aren't visited on the child.
Amanda I have a lot of my own, too.
Greg: You're thinking of the lives that were lost at the Mardi Gras Ball? Amanda, that's your mother's guilt. Don't take that on.
Amanda: Do you think God keeps score like that? You do something awful and then you do something good, and it balances out?
Greg: Are you asking me to answer for the almighty?
Amanda: Maybe I'm doomed to hell, and there's nothing I can do about it.
Greg: Amanda, think about what you are deep inside. You want to matter, you want to enrich other people's lives. What better way to fit into Godís plan?
Zach: What do you have there?
Zach: And who do you think number 1 is?
Greg: Too often it's not the fear of failure that frightens us but the fear of success, and that's a pity. Our own personal power should be nurtured. It shouldn't be avoided.
Amanda: How does it work? Do you have a waiting list of potential fathers, of donors, the parents who would raise the baby?
Greg: I have the ideal donor and the adoptive couple, as well.
Amanda: And they would be a good match for me if I decided to do this?
Greg: If you decided. That's a very big "if." But, yes, I have the perfect couple -- they've been waiting for a child. The Rivingtons were due to adopt, but the birth mother backed out at the last moment. Now, every woman who gets involved is entirely voluntary. You have to put yourself and your own needs first.
Greg: Amanda, don't take on the things your mother has done. You are not your mother. Those are your mother's wrongs. Don't be so hard on yourself.
Amanda: My dad used to say that. Now he's gone.
Greg: Amanda, look at me. You're a wonderful, giving person. You act out of love.
Amanda: How could you know that?
Greg: Because I can see it in your soul.
Zach: Nope. This is it. It's clean.
Zach: Or this is a hell of a show.
Greg on a CD: My notes and journals are as complete as any physician's could possibly be. I've documented every aspect of my experiments, my life's work, but today those records are not sufficient. I want a more detailed account of my achievements. I hope someday to share these moments with my son or my daughter, so they can understand the miracle of which they were a part. And it begins here with this young woman, the embryo donor -- a healthy young woman in her first trimester. She has no idea what I'm about to do.
Zach: Oh, my God. That's Erica.
Zach: Erica Kaneís son.
Josh: There's a group of doctors in
Erica: "Experimental"? You want
them to test this on
Josh: Well, if nothing works, if there's nothing else we can do for her.
Erica: You want me to hand my daughter over to these doctors, so they can experiment on her? What, write a paper? Make a name for themselves?
Josh: Erica, I just don't want you to lose hope.
Erica: No, you want to get some glory, don't you? You want to share in that glory. You hope that you'll get some press coverage. You hope they'll reward you with your new lab animal. God, you are just like -- well, no one experiments on my daughter. No one. Do you understand that?
Greg: Amanda, I want you to forget about your losses and focus on the new life that you deserve. You're in the land here of fresh starts. You take all the time you need to think about beginning your new life.
Greg: I'm sorry. Excuse me. Madden. Yes. I'll be right there. I'll take care of it. I'm sorry, I have to go, but I'll be right back. Will you be all right?
Amanda: Of course. Yeah, don't worry about me.
Greg: How could I not? Think about what I said.
Amanda: I just wish I knew what I wanted to do.
Greg: Well, you'll think about it, and you'll decide, and whatever you decide to do will be absolutely perfect for you.
Amanda: I've made so many mistakes.
Greg: Amanda, you are the kind of young woman that any man would be proud to have as a daughter. Please try to be kinder to yourself.
Babe: J.R., I asked you a question. You said that we had to meet in this room. Why?
J.R.: Does it matter anymore?
Babe: I had hoped that maybe we could get us back on track, that -- that maybe you realized that that family meeting wasn't an ambush. It was out of love. And everyone is worried about your drinking, J.R., me most of all, because I care about you and I -- and I hate what alcohol does to you.
J.R.: I have to go check on
Babe: J.R., are we ok? You and I?
J.R.: My best friend's in the hospital right now, and you want me to stay around here and reassure you? It's all about you, isn't it?
Babe: No, no, it is about love. I need you to know how much I love you.
Ryan: Our baby's all right.
Ryan: He's a strong little guy.
Ryan: Your mom's here. We've kind of been a tag team. They only let one of us in the room at one time, so I'm going to -- I'm going to go out in the hall.
Erica: Hi, honey. Oh, you look so beautiful. Just like you're sleeping.
Erica: So many rules around here. There has to be something I can do to make this place a little more cheery. Well, I understand why they don't let flowers in ICU, but maybe Joe would make an exception.
Erica: A few flowers would make all the difference in the world.
Erica: You and Bianca, you're sensible adults. And who am I to interfere? "Don't offer any opinions, don't complicate matters." That's how I've always operated, right? Oh, God, if that didn't get a rise out of you --
Erica: If you don't wake up, I'm going to
have to take over. I'm going to have to make all your decisions for you. I'm
going to have to run your life. So you better wake up. Please, please,
Zach: This is it. This is what Erica has on Madden. She found out what he did to her.
Zach: Take her embryo and plant it in his own wife.
[Greg approaches the secret room and hears
Ryan: Joe wants to meet with us.
Erica: I'll be right back, honey.
Joe: Erica, Ryan, I want you both to be
quite clear about
Erica: Joe, please. We don't need to hear this in medical-ese. Can you just please -- just tell us? Just directly, simply?
Erica: But people do come out of comas.
Erica: Don't they? I mean, after weeks -- even months -- they do.
Joe: But what worries us is the bleeding
going on in
Ryan: I mean, how can you even make a
conclusion like that now?
Erica: Joe, there has to be something that you can do. There has to be something that you can do to help her.
Joe: We've been discussing that, and there
is a way. But it presents another problem, and it involves
Zach: I'm not disagreeing with you.
Zach: Ok, but this is Ericaís face on this thing. And what he did was criminal, but there's a reason why she hasn't gone public. I don't know what it is -- and Josh is involved in this, as well.
[Shutting the secret roomís door, Greg shuts down the fans.]
Zach: And there goes our air supply.
Man: Mrs. Chandler, I just heard the news. How did it happen?
Babe: Negligence? Thanks to your carelessness, a pregnant woman might die.
Man: I'm real sorry.
Babe: No, no, I warned you. I said to get all of this junk cleaned up and secure it.
Man: I followed your instructions. I mean, I even had the materials secured with metal strapping.
Babe: So it couldn't fall?
Man: Not when we were finished with it. I -- I'm sorry that lady got hurt, but, I mean, it wasn't our fault.
Babe: Someone cut this.
Erica: But it's too early, isn't it?
Dr. Mayer: It can be done.
Ryan: Would -- would the baby survive?
Joe: Given the proper care in the ICU Neonatal Unit, chances are good.
Ryan: "Chances are good"?
Ryan: Joe, I mean, you got to give me a little bit more than that, better than "chances are good."
Joe: The test results on the baby's lung maturity are -- they're simply not where we would like them. And so there's always the possibility, if we take him now, that there'll be respiratory problems or a hemorrhage, but --
Ryan: My son could die if you take him.
Joe: But if we don't, the longer we wait,
the worse it will be for
Erica: So we either risk the baby's life,
Joe: And only you and Ryan can make that decision.
>> On the next "All My Children" --
Babe: I know, J.R., I know.
J.R.: What do you know?
Ryan: You've been my friend, Kendall, you've been my enemy, and now the mother of my unborn child.
