Ryan: So? What did Madden say when you told him you're finding a new doctor? I'm sure not many patients stand up to the wizard.
Kendall: I didn't dump him. I'm not changing doctors.
Ryan: What? I mean, after he manipulated you like that, after he shoved adoption and shoved that couple in your face? Kendall, the last thing that you need is to have your doctor, the person that you're supposed to trust, you know, beyond anything, to have him play you like this, especially with something this huge.
Kendall: Ok, I -- there is one thing that I do know. I'm sick and tired of being played and being pressured. I'm tired of the pressure. My decisions are my decisions, so as of right now, you and Madden are both backing off.
Greg: What's the problem?
David: Well, the angio was negative. And the EKG shows only sporadic changes, nothing significant. But the heart monitor indicates an ongoing, atypical, unpredictable arrhythmia.
Josh: That's it? You're supposed to be the best. If you can't figure it out, we'll get someone who can.
David: I want you admitted overnight for observation.
Greg: I feel fine.
David: It's your second episode, more severe than the first. I want you hooked up to a heart monitor for 24 hours for observation. Julia, would you set that up?
Julia: Yes, Doctor.
David: You don't leave this hospital until I rule out the possibility that you suffered a mild heart attack.
Greg: I did not have a heart attack.
David: Once again, my specialty, not yours. Something doesn't make sense here. Now, you're going nowhere until I figure this out.
Babe: If I had known that Simone was going to lose it on you like that -- but don't worry, we're going to find you the perfect job and everything is going to work out. I promise.
[Running into Josh in the ER, Amanda accosts him.]
Amanda: You ruined my life! I have nothing because of you, but you will not get away with it. You will pay for this, I swear it!
Zach: How do you know Madden?
[As Zach and Dixie hide behind a door, J.R. runs into Anita's supply cart, narrowly missing his mother.]
J.R.: What is with you? Why don't you watch where you're going?
Anita: You bumped into me.
J.R.: Yeah, clumsy and rude. Where's my wife?
Anita: Babe? I have no idea.
J.R.: I was told that she was here.
Anita: Try the ER. Thanks for your help.
Zach: Hey, Junior? What happened to your manners, man?
J.R.: Why don't you get out of my face.
Zach: I know you're on the board. Doesn't mean you have to be an ass.
J.R.: She ran into me. I have to find my wife.
Zach: You all right?
Anita: Yeah, it's pure J.R. No damage, though. Thank you for saying something.
Zach: I don't think it's going to make a difference.
[Zach knocks on the door of the empty room where Dixie’s hiding.]
Dixie: Thank you for intercepting J.R.
Zach: So, what do you think? New life, new town? Beats hiding out in hospital rooms.
Dixie: No, I -- I can't leave. Definitely not now. J.R. said something about Babe -- that she's here. Is she hurt, is she sick?
Zach: I don't know. He's headed to the ER.
Dixie: The ER? That's where David is. He said he was going to tell him if I -- if I didn't meet him here. I've got to go.
Zach: No. I'll take care of Hayward.
David: Don't fight me on this one, Doctor. You're not the only person I may be bringing back from death's door today.
Amanda: Let go, you jerk! What did I ever do to you, huh? Nothing! You totally used me!
Babe: Amanda, you need to chill, ok?
Amanda: All I did is ask you for a job. You pretended you wanted to help me, the whole mentor thing -- it was total bull! You just wanted someone you could frame, someone that would take the fall for you!
Josh: I'm so sorry you're upset, Amanda.
Amanda: Oh, like hell you are. You don't care how many people you rip, as long as you get what you want.
Babe: Hey, you really need to calm down now.
Josh: Yeah, you've been under a lot of stress lately.
Amanda: I could get rid of all my stress if I could just shove your head --
J.R.: Hey! Babe! Are you all right?
Babe: I'm fine. Amanda got hurt, her wrist.
Amanda: I want payback. I want you to suffer like I have. I want you to know what it feels like to trust someone, then have them dump all over you.
Josh: If you just calm down, be reasonable, we'll get you the help you need, Amanda.
Amanda: Do not talk to me like I am a drooling idiot!
J.R.: She heading for the Psych Ward?
Amanda: You are a conniving, manipulative jerk. You like it, you love it, you are so evil!
Josh: Hey -- I didn't blow people up. I didn't put my daddy on ice. Maybe you need to be admitted.
Amanda: Is that supposed to scare me? This man is not a doctor, he's a monster!
Josh: Keep it up Amanda, I'm going to have to call security.
Amanda: He shouldn't be allowed to treat patients or even touch them! He ruined my life. He's the one that drugged Erica Kane. He's the reason she stabbed --
Josh: That's it!
Amanda: Zach Slater! Oh, that's right, the big doctor! Why don't you go ruin someone else's life?
Julia: Amanda -- you're hurt, and you're angry. You need to calm down before you cause more damage.
Amanda: It's my wrist, not my mouth.
Julia: Yeah, it seemed to be working just fine. And why don't you give it a rest? Let's go in here, you can take five. Please?
J.R.: Julia's got it under control. Why don't we get out of here?
Babe: I'm not leaving Amanda.
Kendall: I know you want what's best for this baby, for me, and for all of us. I get that. And I'm also very clear on how you feel about Greg Madden. This is not working.
Ryan: "This" -- you think that I'm doing what Madden is doing?
Kendall: Ryan, I'm getting it from both sides. Greg -- he's pushing me into adoption, and -- and you're pushing to raise this child. I -- I can't take it. I'm getting it from both of you.
Ryan: Ok, ok, ok, I -- I really never intended to work you over, Kendall.
Kendall: I'm not angry. I love that you love this baby. And I respect that you want to raise him and get to know him. I know what it's taken to get you to this point. It's huge.
Ryan: But single dad? Look, Kendall, I -- I have lost a lot of -- I've lost a lot of sleep over this. I've been weighing, you know, pros and cons, one parent, two parents. I've read books, I've -- I've checked out single-father groups. But no matter how committed I am to our son, no matter how many books I read or research I do, the bottom line is me raising this child alone isn't the right choice for my son.
Kendall: The solo act doesn't work for you. But if I signed on as a co-parent?
Ryan: If you agreed to raise this child with me, I wouldn't hesitate for a second.
Kendall: Ok, see, that's what I'm talking about, Ryan. "No pressure, Kendall. I just want to raise my kid and share his life. I only want to do it with you." That's -- that's pressure, Ryan, with -- with a P, with a capital P. Pressure.
Ryan: I don't -- I don't mean it to be. I'm not trying to manipulate you. It's just about our little boy, that's all, what he needs -- what he needs to grow up safe and strong. I think he needs his mom.
Kendall: Right. Well, I'm -- I'm all for this little boy having a mother. It doesn't have to be me.
Ryan: Who else is there, Kendall? There's nobody in my life right now, and maybe there never will be.
Kendall: Ryan, are you kidding me? There are hundreds of women who would love the deluxe Lavery package -- the hot, gorgeous, hunky father, and then the beautiful baby boy. I'll take you to the park right now. We'll get lines of women, I'll interview them.
Ryan: Kendall, I am not going to interview women to be the mother of my child, especially when his biological mother is one of the people I'm closest to on the planet.
Kendall: Ok, pressure.
Kendall: Are you -- you're really convinced that Madden is packing it on? Can't you see, Ryan? You're just as bad.
Ryan: No, no, I'm honest about what I want.
Kendall: Well, what if I don't do what you want? What does that make me? The woman who denied you your child?
Greg: I know your reputation. I'm sure I will survive. I have to. I have a lot to be done.
David: Yep. Your work certainly does change lives.
Julia: You're going to have to tell me where you got this. Would you please hold this for Miss Dillon? Thank you. I'm sorry we're so backed up. Why don't you just -- well, why don't you just hang out right here, and practice those deep-breathing exercises. They'll help calm you down.
Amanda: Thanks. If it it weren't for you, Josh really might've had me locked in a padded cell.
Julia: Well, Dr. Madden doesn't have that authority.
Amanda: He acts like he owns the place.
Julia: Lucky for us, he doesn't. You're going to need an X-ray. You know what? The head tech owes me a favor -- poker, and he was a really bad loser. Let me see if I can move you up to the head of line, so you can get out of here.
Amanda: Thanks, again. Have I said that too much?
Julia: Everything's going to be ok.
J.R.: Cut Amanda loose.
Babe: She is here because of me. I promised her a job at Fusion, and it got ugly real fast. My partners -- I should have known they're not crazy about me. But Amanda -- Simone took her down, and so here we are.
J.R.: You cannot blame Simone. She lost Ethan because of Amanda and her wack of a mother. Leave that disaster alone.
Babe: I'm not blaming Simone. But what happened to our whole big conversation about the forgiveness stuff? I thought you were going to try to let it go.
J.R.: I did -- for you.
Babe: Ok, then. So how about you let me see this through?
J.R.: If you want to help Amanda, great. But it doesn't mean that you have to babysit her.
Babe: I've been where Amanda is. People see her and spit. They won't give her a chance, they don't get what she did, they don't even care why she did it, how she could cover for her mom. But I get it. Amanda and I have both made unforgivable mistakes, all because we love someone.
Dixie: So what happened?
Zach: David's with a patient, and J.R.’s with Babe.
Dixie: Is Babe ok?
Zach: She's fine. She brought someone in here.
Dixie: Oh. Ok. So David hasn't spoken to J.R. yet?
Zach: No. David is with Madden.
Dixie: Oh. Well, I have to stop him.
PA Announcer: Dr. Hayward, paging Dr. Hayward. Please go to Room 220, Room 220.
Dixie: That's this room. You did this?
Zach: Seemed like a good idea. Let me know.
Dixie: Zach --
Zach: If you want to talk about Madden, I'll be here.
Greg: If I have to spend the night, can I have them send my work over?
David: I don't see why not. I'm going to check this out, and I'll get back to you.
Ryan: I would never accuse you of keeping my child from me.
Kendall: Ok, you say that now, Ryan, but it's all on my head. Whether or not you watch your son grow up, it's all on me.
Ryan: Kendall, I'm not -- I'm not trying to guilt you into raising our child together.
Kendall: Ok, Ryan, I get that. You want what you want, but it happens to involve a lifetime commitment from me.
Ryan: I just want our son to have the best shot possible.
Kendall: I understand that. But what is right for you might not be right for me.
Ryan: Ok. Ok, well, we have lots of time, and we can just keep talking it through, and we can work it --
Kendall: No, no -- please, Ryan -- no, please -- no more talking. I'm so sick of talking, all right? This is my decision to make. No more chats, no more trying to figure things out, no more help, please. Now, I want what's best for this baby just as much as you do. But if someone forces me into anything, it's not going to be good for any of us.
Ryan: Maybe I have been pushing just a little bit.
Kendall: Maybe, yeah, a little.
Ryan: I'm sorry. I'll back off.
Kendall: Ok, good. Thank you.
Kendall: Thank you for listening to me finally. Oh, yeah. You know, I -- I've always known what I wanted, and I've always known exactly how to get it, and I almost always do. But this? I don't have a clue what I want. I do know what I don't want.
Kendall: Right. You're smart, you catch on quickly.
Ryan: Mm-hmm. Very quickly the last thing that I want to do is make this harder for you, ok? So, I will be behind whatever you decide whenever you decide it.
Kendall: Even if it's during contractions?
Ryan: Whenever you decide. If it's free and clear of Madden and of me, I'll respect that. So, from now on, stress-free zone, ok? You have my word.
Julia: Was it true what Amanda said? Did you really use her like that?
Josh: Nurse Julia -- so dedicated, so caring, so involved with her patients. Well, here's a suggestion for you, Nurse Julia. Why don't you get back to hauling bedpans?
Julia: Here's one for you -- don't follow in your father's footsteps.
Greg: Have you arranged to have my patient files delivered?
Anita: Yes, I talked to Hazel, and you'll have them as soon as I get you transferred to your room.
Greg: Thank you.
David: You look good, J.R. Too bad.
Babe: Dad, what are you doing? You said that you had somewhere you had to go.
David: I'm still working on that, darling.
Babe: Oh, no. No, you two do not start.
J.R.: You want to go off on me again about my mother? Go ahead, get it over with.
David: I'm not really sure if you can handle it.
Babe: Ok, do we really have to do this right now?
J.R.: Why don't you tell me? Don't hold back. What don't I know about my mother? What are you dying to tell me?
David: You might want to sit down. This is going to hit you where it hurts.
PA Announcer: Dr. David Hayward, please go to Room 220.
Babe: Sounds like you have somewhere to be.
David: I'll be back.
J.R.: I can't wait.
Babe: J.R., I'm sorry about my dad.
J.R.: No, I can deal. But you and Amanda -- you want to feel sorry for her, go ahead. But stay away. The girl is trouble.
Babe: I was trouble. I did horrible things to you and Bianca. I hurt you both, and I told myself it was because I was protecting Little Adam and you.
J.R.: No one died from the choices that you made.
Babe: But I lost you and Bianca, and I was hated and despised by everyone, even total strangers. But no matter how hard I was slammed on, no matter how much hurt was piled on, I was never alone. My mama -- she stood by me, and so did David and Jamie. But Amanda -- I mean, look at her. She doesn't even have anyone. Her mom's locked up in some Psych hospital and her dad's dead.
J.R.: Maybe we can convince Jamie to be her pretend friend. Maybe he can get her a pretend job.
Babe: Not funny. Look, when Little Adam went missing at Christmas --
J.R.: Because Amanda's mother took him.
Babe: Bianca was there. Even after every single thing that I did to her, she took me in her arms, and she told me that it would be ok. And it was. And I learned that forgiveness is more than just words, and I want to show Amanda what Bianca showed me. I want to help her like Bianca helped me.
J.R.: So give her a hug and move on.
Babe: I promised her that I would help her find a job, and I'm not going back on my word.
J.R.: The Fusion team's right to spit her out. What's left? Who's going to hire the daughter of a murdering psychopath?
Babe: Chandler Enterprises?
Anita: We'll have you out of here in just a few minutes.
Amanda: Are you going to pick up where your son left off -- slam me bigger, better, harder? Because if you are, just please save it.
Greg: What Joshua did to you was inexcusable. I'd like to make it up to you, if you'll let me.
David: Great -- another waste of time. You came. I was afraid. When you left the other night at the wedding, I thought I'd never see you again. I've hardly slept, eaten. All I could think about was you, us, a second chance. Well, looks like I haven't lost you. You're here.
Dixie: You blackmailed me. That's the only reason that I'm here.
David: I was running out of options.
Dixie: You threatened to hurt my son. You used him to get to me. My God, David, what is wrong with you? Who are you?
David: I'm a man in love, Dixie. You're alive. And for the first time in years, I'm alive again, too. I will not lose that.
Dixie: So you'll blackmail me in order to get me to stay?
David: Whatever it takes. I even hired a private investigator -- in case you didn't call.
Dixie: No, no, that's a big mistake, ok? You have to call them off immediately.
David: Are you going to leave?
Dixie: Stop this, stop it. Don't try to control me.
David: On one condition -- stop running, and give us another shot.
J.R.: Me? Hire Amanda? You must be joking.
Babe: No joke.
J.R.: No, no, no. No deal.
Babe: Come on, there's got to be something that she can do at Chandler -- word processing or -- or file clerk. She could be a receptionist in some department that you never have to go to. You'd never have to see her.
J.R.: Yes, I would. Every time I heard her name, I -- I would see her face. Her -- her timecard, her -- her paycheck, I would remember. I would remember that her mother kidnapped our son -- not once, but twice -- and she almost killed you, and Amanda let that happen.
Babe: But she regrets it every day.
J.R.: You want me to forgive Amanda, I did. But there is no way that I'm going to hire her, not even for you.
Amanda: Why are you being so nice?
Greg: Until the night of the ball, I never realized how cruel my son could be. You were very vulnerable. He exploited your position. He had no regard for the impact that it would have on your life.
Amanda: Well, it's not like I was fast-tracking it to the big time.
Greg: Well, between your mother's crimes and your father's death, your life hasn't been very easy. I can't change that, but there is something I can offer you. I have a receptionist position at the clinic. It's a reasonable salary, there's health benefits, you'll get paid vacation.
Amanda: Is this a mercy hire?
Greg: Absolutely not. You're very personable, you're articulate, and you're intelligent. I would hire you even if Josh hadn't been cruel to you.
Amanda: Josh is too old to be spanked, so you'll hire me to stick it to him? No, thanks. I'm tired of being used.
Greg: No, Amanda, that's not what this is. My child has damaged you, and as a parent, it's my responsibility to take care of it. You need help. Please, let me help you.
Josh: "My dad's footsteps"? What the hell is that supposed to mean? You have it in for him, too?
Julia: I just meant that he has a brilliant reputation, and he didn't get there by drugging celebrities.
Josh: Judgment by the trigger-happy nurse -- I love it. You know you're still the topic of conversation down in the cafeteria? I know -- self-defense. Way to work the legal system. A lot of your coworkers still think you got away with murder. Just between you and me, was it self-defense, or did you just have to watch that guy die and know that you did it?
Julia: That is not how it was.
Josh: You and Jonathan Lavery compare notes? Is that why you invited him to your class? What exactly do you teach, Nurse Julia -- how to load a shotgun?
Jonathan: I blew it, Erin. I thought -- I thought it would be ok, you know? I -- I thought that if I -- if I apologized to Kendall, then --
Erin: No, it's going to be ok, all right? Ryan's going to understand.
Ryan: Hey, guys.
Jonathan: Oh, Ryan, I'm sorry. I -- I screwed up again.
Ryan: What -- what? What'd you do? What happened?
Erin: Listen, it wasn't Jonathan's fault, ok?
Ryan: Ok, what wasn't Jonathan's fault?
Jonathan: It's about Kendall.
Ryan: What about Kendall?
Jonathan: Well, she was here, she was looking for you.
Ryan: Really? Because, I mean, she didn't say anything to me about it.
Jonathan: Well, I -- I asked her if she wanted something to drink, and then I told her how -- how excited I am about my nephew, and I asked her if I could touch the baby, and I -- I scared her. Ryan, I scared her really bad. And I'm sorry because I -- I didn't mean to do anything wrong.
Ryan: You didn't do anything wrong, Jonathan, believe me. I am the one that screwed up.
Dixie: Blackmail? This is how you show your love?
David: It's not like you've given me a lot to work with here.
Dixie: You know, you keep this up, you will never see me again.
David: Then I'll have no choice. I'll have to tell J.R.
Dixie: Ok. Fine. You tell J.R. You tell everyone that I'm alive. Take out a billboard, for all I care. Everybody knows you're a liar. Janet will back you up, but she's insane, and I won't be around to prove you right.
David: You want to leave, you're going to have to go through me. Now, that's not going to happen, unless, of course, you have someone tie me up and stuff me in a supply closet. Who did that to me, Dixie?
Dixie: I don't know, but how thoughtful of them, really.
David: No, no, no, no, no. Timing. I had my hands on proof you exist -- surveillance camera footage. Next thing I know, I'm trussed up, and I'm in a supply closet next to a mop. And even today, someone just paged me. Now, I know it couldn't have been you, because you can't risk it. So who is it, Dixie? Who is helping you?
Kendall: What are you doing here?
Zach: I'm -- I'm visiting a friend.
Zach: And you -- you're ok? Baby ok?
Kendall: Yeah, yeah, we're fine.
Zach: That's good.
Kendall: Yeah. Um --
Zach: I --
Kendall: I -- I have to go. I should go.
PA Announcer: Attention, please -- Obstetrics visiting hours are now over.
Dixie: No one is helping me.
David: Then how do you explain my supply closet incident?
Dixie: I can't. I know nothing about it.
David: Was it Del -- not that he has the brains.
Dixie: Nice. Let me live my life, David. Let me do what I have to do. No more blackmail, no more threats.
David: I love you, Dixie --
David: And I want you to give us another chance. Spend time with me, real time. You'll remember what it was like when we were together, what it felt like when we made love, how safe you felt to open up your heart to me.
Dixie: David, I can't.
David: You trusted me once, you will trust me again, and when you do, you will not want to leave me. We can have a new life, Dixie, a fresh, new start for both of us. All you have to do is stay. I'll help you -- I'll hide you. I made you happy once. I can make you happy again.
Dixie: All right, I'll stay.
David: You won't regret it.
Dixie: I hope not.
David: I'll keep your secret, and I will stay away from J.R. Whatever it takes, whatever you need, I swear it -- on my love for you.
J.R.: I love you. I do. But there is no way that Amanda's going to be a Chandler employee.
Babe: You are right. And I'm sorry. I guess it was just a bit too much to expect.
J.R.: I'll make it up to you. I'll give you a massage a million times. I'll rub that sweet spot out every single night. Heck, I'll take you home right now and get started.
Babe: Oh -- it's tempting, but I made a promise. She just needs a little help. Hey! You all patched up?
Amanda: All better. You know, Babe, you've been really great. Thank you. But you are off the hook. I found work.
Babe: How? Because it's really no problem if -- you don't just have to take --
Amanda: I start immediately, and, you know, I'm actually kind of excited about it.
Babe: That's great, really. Congratulations. I'm very proud of you.
Amanda: Thank you. It is great. Yeah. Thank you, again.
Babe: You see? She's already standing a little bit straighter.
J.R.: And walking away -- the best part.
J.R.: Don't leave without me, ok? Hello? What the hell do you want?
Kendall: Hazel told me you were admitted. You ok?
Greg: Yeah. They're making a big fuss over my blood pressure. But I'm well enough to see patients. Is that why you're here? Have you made a decision?
Kendall: You might want to ease up on that.
Greg: I'm sorry again. I didn't mean to spring the Rivingtons on you like that. I just wanted to help. I certainly did not want to railroad you into a choice you wouldn't be happy with.
Kendall: I know you care. You put your whole career on the line to make this baby possible. But I -- I just -- the whole thing about meeting the potential parents and the whole adoption thing -- it's -- it's way too heavy right now. So if you want to be my doctor, I need to know I can count on you. No -- no ambushes, no pushing, no talk about adoption until I'm ready to go there -- if I'm ever ready to go there. Think you can do that?
Greg: I can, and I will. I respect you, Kendall, and I know you'll make the right decision on your own.
Kendall: Good. So, when's our next appointment?
Ryan: It's not your fault.
Erin: You know what? This is going to be ok. Let me talk to Ryan, all right? You don't want to be late for work, do you?
Jonathan: All right.
Erin: All right?
Jonathan: Ryan, I'm so sorry.
Ryan: Don't be sorry, Hockett. Please don't.
Erin: Come on. Bye.
Erin: Ok, what is going on here? What is your fault? What, exactly, happened with Kendall?
Ryan: I don't want her to give our child up for adoption, but I won't take on raising him by myself. You know, what -- the whole single-parent thing just doesn't -- it doesn't feel right for me or -- or for my son.
Erin: Hey, makes sense coming from our childhood, it does. But, Ryan, you're a great big brother. It can't be that much of a leap to dad -- if that's what you want.
Ryan: It is what I want, but I just can't seem to think about it without Kendall. I can't see raising this child without his mom.
Erin: Ryan, you're a catch! You're going to meet someone, and you'll get married and --
Ryan: You know what, Erin? It's really not the same thing. This child needs his mother. Needs his mother to protect him.
Erin: Protect him from what?
Ryan: From me, Erin, from his father.
Zach: Hey. Looks like everything went your way -- whatever it was.
Kendall: Thank you, Zach.
Ryan: Oh, my God. I get it now. I understand why I don't want to raise this child alone, why I'm so set on having Kendall in his life. I want her to protect him from me.
Babe: Bad news?
J.R.: No. It's no big deal. It's just a little something I have to take care of.
Babe: Love you.
Josh: I'm really glad we had our little chat. Now, just remember your place.
Julia: "My place"?
Josh: Should we review? Doctor, nurse. So, show some respect, and not just for me but for my father.
Julia: Well, if you want respect, earn it.
Josh: If you want to keep your job, lose the attitude -- and no more cracks about my father.
Julia: Look, I just said that he --
Josh: Oh, I know what you said and how you said it, and as long as he's a patient here, you stay away from him. I'll be watching you.
Julia: I'll be watching you, too, Doctor.
Josh: Where's my father? What happened?
David: Would you relax? Your father's been admitted and moved to a room. He's stable. I upped his meds. The arrhythmia should subside.
Josh: "Should"? Is that the best you can do?
David: He's under observation. I'll know more tomorrow. All he has to do is rest and avoid stress.
Greg: Thank you.
Anita: You're all set. Is there anything else you need?
Greg: I'm fine.
Anita: Get some rest.
[Dixie walks into Greg's room and stares at him.]
>> On the next "All My Children" --
Janet (to J.R.): It's good to see you.
J.R.: You won't think that after I'm done.
Kendall (to Zach): Why are you helping me -- because you owe me?
Zach: Because I love you.
Greg (to Dixie): I know exactly why you came.
Dixie: You absolute scum of the earth. You know exactly what I want from you.
