Ryan: How'd it go so wrong? I mean, I die, and Greenlee gets a life. That's the way that it was supposed to play out. It was supposed to let Greenlee have a way out and escape me from turning into Dad. I mean, yes, I knew that she was going to grieve, obviously, that she would grieve like she did with Leo, but then she would -- I mean, she would move on, she would fall in love, and she would start a new life because that -- that's what Greenlee does. Only not anymore. My death killed her, too. What we both just saw today -- this is not what I wanted. I -- what did I miss?

Erin: How much Greenlee loves you.

[At a Nova Scotia hospital, Greenlee is shocked to see her brother-in-law being wheeled down the hall.]

Greenlee: Jonathan? Jonathan!

J.R.: That maniac at your Fusion party -- he wants to apologize.

Kendall: Tell him it's ok.

J.R.: No, it's not ok. I crashed your big launch party, I publicly reamed you for giving Chandler Enterprises back to my family. That's some thank-you. No, no, I don't have any excuse.

Kendall: Yeah, except that you're scared. I mean, your mother might be dead, J.R. You don't know what to do with that.

J.R.: I'll figure it out. Why don't you go back to your party?

Kendall: No, no. Forget about Fusion, it's just business. You're my friend.

J.R.: I let her down, Kendall. If my mother dies, I don't think I'm ever going to be able to live with myself.

[While wrestling for the gun with Julia, Garret is shot and lies on the floor unconscious.]

Di: Julia! Julia, are you -- are you hit?

Julia: No. Oh --

Di: He's still -- he's still alive. It hit him in his leg. We'll get his cell phone, call for help.

Julia: Get back! I said move, Di. I have to do what I have to do.

Di: Don't do this, Julia. He's down, he's wounded. He can't hurt me or you anymore.

Julia: He'll get away. He always does. He's untouchable. It has to end.

Di: Just lower the gun, Julia.

Julia: They told me that Noah was dead. They wouldn't let me see his body, his beautiful face. I just wanted to say good-bye to him, to kiss him one last time -- my husband, my Noah -- but they wouldn't let me. They wouldn't tell me where he was buried. They could've just dumped him like a sack of garbage because of him! I owe it to Noah. I -- I can't let him down. I can't -- I can't let him live.

Di: You end his life, what happens to yours?

Julia: He won't let us have our lives. We'll be trapped, hiding, until we're caught and punished. He'll -- he'll see that that happens, and he'll find a way. This is the only way to end the pain.

Di: No, Julia -- Julia, it'll make the pain worse. It'll make you a killer. Please remember what we talked about. Any chance of you getting your life back will be killed right along with him.

Garret: Listen to her, Julia.

[Garret groans in pain]

Garret: Listen to her.

Kendall: J.R., you don't know for sure, right? I mean, Dixie -- she might not be dead.

J.R.: No, nothing is for sure. She went after this guy, this crime lord. He's tried to kill her before.

Kendall: Well, have you heard anything from her?

J.R.: She left a note for Tad. It's a funny thing -- she knew that she might not come back. God, I've been so stupid! How could I be such a stupid jerk?

Kendall: Stop, listen to me. Friends do not let friends beat up on themselves.

J.R.: When my mom came back -- "grateful" doesn't even begin to cover it. And how do I repay her? She asked me for a favor, and I turned her down.

Kendall: Ok, well, I'm sure you had your reasons. What was the favor?

J.R.: She asked me to back off Jamie, stop screwing with his life. I said no way.

Kendall: Well, that's the beautiful thing about favors -- you have the right to say "No, thank you, I'll pass," or "sure, I'll do it."

J.R.: No, she wanted us all to be happy and together, and I could've done that, but hell, no! Why would I let go of a grudge that good? No, you know what I do? I dig my heels in. I let her down, Kendall. If I lose my mother, I have to live with that.

Kendall: Hey, you listen to me. Isn't no news good news? All right, we don't even know anything for sure, so we can hang on to hope. And if I were you, that's what I'd be doing right now. I mean, with Tad out there on the hunt, you know he would catch a bullet in his teeth to protect Dixie, J.R. He's not going to let anything bad happen.

J.R.: I have no idea what Tad's up to. I've pushed him so far out of my life, just like I pushed away everybody else in my life.

Tad: I don't want to hear it, Zach. Not one word.

Zach: Why don't you go home and get drunk? I'll take it from here.

Tad: No. This is mine from start to finish.

Zach: I'll drive.

Tad: I'm too tired to argue.

Jamie: Is there any news on Dixie?

Tad: I got a lead.

Jamie: All right, let's go.

Tad: No, you're not along for this one, all right?

Jamie: Come on, Dad --

Tad: I said no. Just stay here, we'll be in touch.

Babe: Any word on Dixie?

Jamie: Tad's on it.

Babe: Jamie, wait a second, please?

Jamie: Babe, it's already been said.

Babe: Look, I hate that you think all kinds of ugly about me, but I need you to get that no matter what, everything I do is for my son.

Jamie: I get it, Babe. I was there on the run with you and Baby Ja -- Little Adam. Or did you forget all that?

Babe: No. I'll never forget those days. But I need you to understand that not everyone can afford to walk a straight line. Life isn't always about clear-cut right turns, even though that's how you were raised. You never had to steal to feed yourself or your family, decide how much bad you can live with just to get by. Luckily, you never had to make decisions like that, choices where no matter what you decide, people end up getting hurt.

Jamie: So everything you do now -- it's all about your rough life growing up?

Babe: It is about black and white not always working, Jamie. Sometimes gray does the trick, makes happy out of miserable. Sometimes what feels like a slap in the face turns out to be a gift. Be honest, Jamie. I know that you hate me for what I did to you, but aren't you even just a little bit psyched about school and the new job at the hospital, the money, the whole doctor dream? Sometimes lies need to be told. Sometimes secrets need to be kept.

Ryan: The person that you just met is somebody that I've never seen before. I don't know that Greenlee. I could never even imagine her like that before. I did that to her, Erin.

Erin: What are you going to do to fix it?

Ryan: Well, I wish there was an easy answer, Erin.

Erin: Forget easy. Go for honest.

Ryan: The choices are insane. It's insane. What -- I stay dead, she stays broken.

Erin: Or you let her know that you're alive.

Ryan: No, you asked her that. You asked what if I came back after all this time, and you heard what she said. She would have no life. That's what she said, she would have no hope. Because if I survived, I would've found a way back to her. That's the Ryan that she loves, not the guy who's slammed her world by playing dead.

Erin: She lost that baby, Ryan. It was the last piece of you she could hold on to. Now she's got nothing left of you.

Ryan: If I go back, if I told her, it would kill any shred of faith that she had in us. It would hurt her as bad as me staying dead.

Erin: So go back to her and just don't tell her the rest.

Greenlee: I've lost him, but it was him, I'm sure of it. What room is he in?

Nurse: Who are you looking for?

Greenlee: Jonathan Lavery! What is he doing here? How did he get in here?

Nurse: Please lower your voice.

Greenlee: He's supposed to be dead, and I just saw him!

Nurse: Miss, you need to calm down and lower your voice, or you're going to force me to call security.

Greenlee: It can't be. It can't be. How could he be alive? The man is a murderer, do you understand me? He's got to be stopped, and you have to help me do it! Call the police, tell them you have a patient here who's a killer. Give them his room, his name -- Jonathan Lavery.

Nurse: Lavery -- there's no patient here by that name. Listen, I'd appreciate it if we could --

Greenlee: There he is! There he is!

Ryan: Greenlee knows that I went off that cliff. She's going to need some answers.

Erin: So you fudge them. You come up with a story, keep it simple. You washed up onshore and -- and somebody found you and took you in. But with, you know, the shock and the trauma, you couldn't remember who you were. But as you started getting stronger, then memories started trickling back, you know, pieces of a life, and then the whole picture. So you rush back to your wife, Greenlee gets her miracle, and you both get a second shot at happily-ever-after.

Ryan: If I did that, it would be another lie, betraying her all over again.

Julia: You're a liar and a thief and a murderer. Don't you dare pretend that you're sorry. You don't have one bit of "sorry" in you. You'll come at me again and again and again, and you'll take my life just like you took Noah's.

Garret: You got me now, Julia, right where you want me. You've won. Let me live.

Julia: Liar! You lie!

Di: Julia -- Julia, please. You know, he's lost everything, he has no power over us. He'll be punished. Don't destroy your life by taking his. He's not worth it. Julia, give me the gun.

Garret: Be smart, Julia. Give up the gun.

[Julia hears voices from the past]

Man's voice: Your husband's dead.

Julia's voice: Noah -- dear God. No, no, where is he?

Di: Julia, put the gun down.

Zach’s voice: Those guys cutting the lawn that's already been cut.

[Julia remembers the gunfire at Wildwind]

Garret: You want your life back, don't you?

Man's voice: [Echoes] Your new identity is Sarah Godwin. Your new identity is Elizabeth Carson. Your new identity is Maritza Garcia. Your new identity -- your new identity --

Julia: It has to end.

Julia's voice: Noah, we can't live like this.

Man's voice: Your husband's dead.

Zach’s voice: And then we'll move you again.

Di: Julia, put the gun down!

Zach’s voice: Nice and safe.

Man's voice: We have to move you.

Noah's voice: And I say in front of God and these people that there is only one thing I would fight for now, valiantly, fiercely with all my heart. That is your happiness and the making of a life with you.

[Di is horrified as Julia fires the gun point blank at Garret who now lies motionless on the floor.]

J.R.: My mom's dream was to glue our family back together. And if she's gone, then she died knowing that I let her down. Because I was so locked into revenge, the king of payback.

Kendall: Ok, listen to me. Before you beat up on yourself again -- you have every right to hold a grudge against Babe and Jamie.

J.R.: Yeah, but I've taken the grudge to an insane level, just like at your office. I got on you, because you made an amazing gift possible.

Kendall: Yeah, because my timing sucked.

J.R.: No, you didn't know about the marriage mess with my dad and Krystal. But, still, I jumped right into this conspiracy theory that you helped Babe's mom get half of my dad's company.

Kendall: Yes, and I let it go because you're under tons of pressure, and you've piled most of it on yourself. J.R., instead of torturing yourself with "Dixie could be dead," why don't you say "Dixie could be alive," and keep saying it like it's true.

J.R.: Yeah, well, when something explodes in my life --

Kendall: Ok, stop, stop. Dixie loves you. She loves you so much. I mean, you're the reason that she came back. She's not going to give up on you just because you refuse to forgive two unforgivable traitors.

J.R.: I could've got out of the business of revenge.

Kendall: Listen, this is not about if you have a right to hold a grudge. It's about your right to hold it.

J.R.: How did you do it, Kendall? How did you forgive Ryan and Greenlee?

Nurse: This has gone far enough.

Greenlee: Move, get away.

[Greenlee chases down a man resembling Jonathan]

Greenlee: I'm sorry. I am so sorry. I thought you were someone else.

Ryan: If I go back, it will not be with another lie. I owe Greenlee the truth. I owe her -- I owe her the chance to hate me.

Erin: Greenlee might never forgive you.

Ryan: And I wouldn't blame her. She's got every right. Erin, Greenlee, and I didn't keep secrets. It was a promise that we made to each other a long time ago and we both understood it. And then after I shot Jonathan, it was like something was different in my head, and I started lying to my wife. I started keeping secrets from her. I made it so that I couldn't have kids. I started lying about where I was going at night, where I'd been, and -- and then my death, the biggest lie. So if I go back, I have to tell Greenlee the truth. She has to know that I betrayed her.

Jamie: It's a nice setup you got for yourself, Babe. You do some damage, you paint over it. Sure, you lied, but you did it all for the right reasons. Easy way out.

Babe: When did you ever know me to take the exit marked "easy"? Never with you. All I could do is sit back and watch you sink deeper in that grease pit that you hated. So I had to go drastic, even if it meant hurt all around.

Jamie: Or keeping secrets. So what secret are you sitting on now, Babe? We're done, but I can still read you. What are you hiding? What is so dark and deep you can't tell me?

Di: Are you ok?

Julia: It's over. He can't touch us, he can't hurt anyone ever again.

Di: Never again.

Julia: I had to do it, I had to end it.

Di: I know. I understand.

Julia: It's over.

Di: Yeah. It's over. No more hiding. Now we have to -- we have to find a way out of here before we end up dead. Garret has men coming.

Julia: Please get me out of here.

Di: I don't -- I don't know the code.

Julia: Try his birthday. Try -- try your birthday! I have to get out of here!

Di: I -- ok, it's not working. I don't --

Julia: Try his cell phone! Find his cell phone!

[Door unlocks]

Di: They're here.

Man: Sterling?

Sterling: The Dragon said we were picking up one package. Which one of you ladies is going to be my special delivery?

Man: Where's The Dragon?

Kendall: Forgiveness? Wow, that's a doozy. Ok, that has never been one of my best events.

J.R.: But you found a way to cut them a pass, Ryan and Greenlee. How did you get there?

Kendall: Well, no one pushed me into it, that's for sure. Forgiveness is a total mystery to me. I mean, I didn't even know I was doing it until the handshake, the tears, and the hug. Along the way I saw Greenlee poisoned, almost driven insane by Jonathan. He trapped us in that cave, and we really thought we were going to die. And then I saw Ryan dealing with his crazy brother's death, just fighting anything that moved. Look, it's not like I just woke up one morning and everything was just sunshine and roses. I mean, I was exhausted from carrying all of that anger around. It really dragged me down.

J.R.: Mm-hmm. You know, not including my mom and Little A, sometimes it feels like all I got is the hate.

Kendall: I know exactly how you feel. I do, J.R. You and I, we are so much alike. Anyone hits us, we just want to hit them right back. And you of all people, you own the rights to hating Jamie and Babe. I mean, they stole your son.

J.R.: Yeah, but what am I going to do? Am I going to keep saying it when I'm 90 years old, chasing them around in a wheelchair, trying to run them over?

Kendall: All right, well, whatever works for you. But forgiveness worked for me. I mean, forgiving Ryan and Greenlee -- it was good for me. Greenlee is now the friend that I thought I'd never have, and I'm hers. So if you can find it in your heart to forgive Jamie or Tad or maybe even Babe, you might just find yourself smiling for no reason at all. Or whistling.

[Kendall laughs]

Kendall: Or -- and hang on for this one -- you might find something that you're even better at than hating. Yeah, but you can't do it -- you can't do it because someone else wants you -- you have to do it for you. No one can push you into this, especially not your mother, who I know loves you and wants the best for you. And that goes double for me.

[Kendall and J.R. hug]

J.R.: Thanks for getting it. Thanks for getting me.

Kendall: Right.

J.R.: Now, why don't you get back to that Fusion party. I've got to get back to the search for my mother.

Kendall: Good, good thoughts.

J.R.: Ok.

Kendall: Ok. Go, go, go, go.

Di: Leave us alone.

Man: Stupid girls. Do you realize what you've done?

Julia: I slayed The Dragon.

Man: Well, it's a shame you're not going to live long enough to brag about it. Dispose of them.

[Door unlocks]

Sterling: Come on, ladies. Let's go.

[Tad enters and knocks both guys out]

Julia: Oh! Oh, Tad --

Di: Oh, God!

Tad: You ok? Are you all right?

Di: You found us. How?

Tad: We got lucky. They all didn't -- they didn't know they were opening the door for us.

Zach: This one's a goner.

Julia: I did it. I killed him.

Zach: The cops are on their way. When they get here, not a word.

Greenlee: Forgive me. I made a mistake.

Nurse: Miss, would you like to see a doctor? I can page Dr. Marquay.

Greenlee: No, it's all right. My husband's brother -- he died. So did my husband. I -- I thought I saw –

Ryan: If I do go back, it'll be for Greenlee. I mean, she's holding on to a dead man, and she can't let go. She could do anything. She could punch me out, she could curse at me, she could hate my guts.

Erin: Or she could forgive you, take you back.

Ryan: Either way, it's her choice, and she won't be a grieving widow, and she won't swear off love for the rest of her life.

Erin: It -- it would be a brave thing for you to do, Ryan.

Ryan: When I decided what was best for Greenlee before and it took away a lot of her choices, I thought I was doing the right thing. So this time if I go back, I will tell her the truth, and whatever happens after that is totally and completely up to her.

Babe: There's no secret, Jamie. I just hope that one day you can forgive me.

J.R.: Well, would you check this out -- another Babe and Jamie sighting. It's becoming a trend.

Babe: I was just leaving.

J.R.: Don't let me chase you out.

Babe: Don't worry, it's not you. Jamie's made it pretty clear that he doesn't want me around.

Jamie: Not if you can't be real with me.

Babe: You wouldn't know real if it was right in front of your face.

J.R.: Yo, kids, if you're putting on a show for my sake --

Babe: Yeah, we've been rehearsing all afternoon.

J.R.: It wouldn't be the first time you faked it, Babe.

Babe: You can both hang.

J.R.: No, no, hold up. Really, if you guys want to get back together --

Jamie: It's not happening.

Babe: No way, no how.

J.R.: All right, whatever you say. But my point is, James, you've satisfied the terms of Aunt Phoebe's will. Now, if you and Babe want to hook back up, there's nothing I can do to stop you. If you and Babe want to give whatever you had another shot, I'll stay out of it.

Jamie: You know, that's big of you, but it's meaningless. Because we didn't break up over you, we broke up over us.

J.R.: All right, whatever. You know, we don't have to go into the Oprah true confessions. I'm just saying that if you want to reconnect, I'll stay out of your business.

Babe: Ok, so what are you trying to pull now?

J.R.: Look, I've played the revenge game. I've proved that I'm the champ. Now it's time for me to refocus my interest on things that really matter, like raising my son, ok? Now, new subject -- how's the hunt going for my mother?

Jamie: Tad and Zach might have had a couple leads, but they didn't leave me with any details.

J.R.: All right, so far, then it's all good?

Jamie: Looks like.

J.R.: Look, James, at the house, I blew you off when you offered to help find my -- our mother. Now, I know that you love her as much as I do, and you want her back just as badly. I was -- I was a little harsh.

Jamie: Who are you and what have you done with the real J.R.?

Babe: I think I know what's going on here.

J.R.: Hey, look, no one asked you!

Babe: You're trying to make nice for your mama. You're doing it for Dixie.

J.R.: Would you quit pretending like you know me? Because you don't!

Babe: It has to be for your mom. You're being way less evil and much more human. Maybe because it was Dixie’s last wish.

Di: I'd really like to just go home to my family.

Officer: We have to get a statement from you. You, too.

Zach: It can wait till tomorrow.

Officer: Whose gun is that?

Zach: Don't say anything.

Officer: Hey, you, stay out of my way! We're going to check you both for powder burns.

Julia: I did it.

Zach: I said don't say anything.

Di: It -- it was self-defense. She had no choice. Garret was holding us hostage. He was going to kill us.

Officer: Oh, come on, that's Garret Williams. Does a lot for the poor kids here in the city. I had the pleasure of shaking his hand at a reception for the mayor.

Derek: Chief Frye, PVPD.

Officer: Who invited you?

Tad: I did. He's part of an ongoing investigation the Feds are running on your friend Mr. Williams.

Derek: Williams was as twisted as they come, tied to I don't know how many killings.

Officer: I'm going to have to clear this with my supervisor.

Derek: Do you have any idea how lucky you are to be alive?

Julia: If not for Dixie, I'd be dead. She saved my life.

Officer: Chief Frye?

Julia: You were wrong about her, Zach. You made a bad call, like I did. She tried to give up her life for me. She's the only reason why I'm still breathing. I saw the real Dixie here -- the one who fights like a tiger for others and doesn't give up, the one who risks her life for her friends. Garret offered to let her go, but she wouldn't leave without me, even though it meant that she might end up dead, too. That's who this woman is. Thank you for giving me back my life. I will never tell. Your secret dies with Garret. You can have your life back, too.

Kendall: Party's over?

Simone: No one left but me and a few cocktail weenies.

Kendall: How'd we make out?

Simone: Well, the beauty editors loved us, the buyers ordered by the gross, and our little zig-zaggy line on our sales chart has Fusion going through the roof, headed towards Venus.

Kendall: Good for us.

Simone: Yeah. So, everything ok with J.R.?

Kendall: Yeah, nothing that finding out his mom is safe won't fix.

Simone: Great. Ok, so, since this launch is over, I am dying to know -- are you pregnant? Can you take this home test already?

Kendall: Soon.

Simone: Soon? But are you worried that this embryo-omelet-implant whatever doesn't take?

Kendall: Well, I just know the success-to-failure ratio, and there's a really good chance that these chicks won't make it out of the nest.

Simone: Honey, I know prepping for this was a hassle -- shots, hormones on acid. But you said there's plenty of Ryan left. If you don't turn the stick blue now, you can try again.

Kendall: Simone, I'm going to share something with you that I haven't told anyone, especially not Greenlee. But if I'm not pregnant, then that was our last chance to ever bring Ryan's baby into this world. His samples defrosted in the blackout.

Simone: Oh, my God! Kendall, we have to know. You have got to take that test, right now.

[Kendall reaches into her purse and pulls out a home pregnancy test.]

Erin’s voice: He wasn't well when he did all of those horrible things.

Greenlee's voice: He was psychotic. He was vicious and sadistic and evil. If he hadn't been all those things, Ryan wouldn't have had to kill him, and I wouldn't have lost my husband.

Nurse: Miss, are you sure you're all right?

Greenlee: I must have imagined it. The man's dead, as dead as my husband.

Ryan: What about you and Jonathan? I mean, he's been talking about how badly he wants to go back to Pine Valley to make everything right.

Erin: I could stay here and take care of him.

Ryan: No. No, I told him I would never leave him again. I mean, if I take him with me now, just -- I mean, it's going to be hard enough for Greenlee to deal with me and my truth. I mean, it's going to make it worse if I bring Jonathan.

Erin: Well, I will make sure Jonathan understands why you left. And I will bring him to Pine Valley when the time is right -- if you decide to go back -- and we'll take it from there. I stand by completely whatever choice you make. So, do you know what you're going to do?

Simone: Well? Are you pregnant or not?

J.R.: I'm out of here. Jamie, I'll let you know if I hear anything.

[Phone rings]

J.R.: Hello?

Di: J.R., honey, it's Mom.

J.R.: Mom! Thank God. How are you?

Di: I'm fine. So is Julia.

J.R.: Mom's ok. Where are you?

Di: New York. Tad's here. I just -- I have to go down to the station and make a statement, and then he'll bring me home.

J.R.: All right. Well, Jamie and I will be home waiting for you.

Di: You don't know how happy that makes me to hear you say that. I love you.

J.R.: I love you, too. Mom's going to be home soon. Do you want to come?

Jamie: Yeah, I'm coming.

Di: J.R. and Jamie -- they're going to meet us at home, together.

Tad: We'd better finish up with the cops and then get you back.

Di: Julia, thank you.

[After Dixie leaves with Tad, Zach leads Julia out by the hand while Garret is wheeled out on a stretcher covered by a sheet. Before leaving, Julia takes a look back at the apartment and especially the pool of blood on the floor.]

>> On the next "All My Children" --

Di (to Del): This is it, the letter that tells who I really am.

Krystal (to Babe): That woman that they're waiting on is nothing but a fake. We tell them Dixie’s not coming home today, not ever.

Brooke (to Tad): You got Dixie back. Why do you look like you lost her all over again?
