J.R.: What's going on?

Erica: J.R., Bianca --

J.R.: Bianca's worse? She's not going to make it?

Jack: We haven't given up on her, no.

J.R.: I'm sorry, Erica. You know how much I love her.

Erica: Then help her now, J.R.

J.R.: Anything. Just name it.

Erica: Give me Bess.

Maria: I need to find Erica.

Zach: Why?

Maria: Because she needs to make some pretty tough decisions, the kind of decisions no parent should have to make.

J.R.: I'm sorry, but, no. Bess is not going to the hospital on Christmas Eve.

Tad: J.R.? We have some bad news.

Maria: Bianca's body is shutting down. So Erica needs to make the decision when the time comes to either put her on a respirator or let her go.

Opal: Could you get off your duff and call Mayo or Johns Hopkins or something?

Palmer: Well, if there were anything anybody could do, then --

Opal: Well, how do you know unless you ask?

Myrtle: Darling, darling, Palmer talked to Joe!

Opal: What, and offered to fly in the big guns?

Palmer: All we can do is wait.

Reggie: This waiting thing sucks.

Danielle: Yeah, they can transplant human hearts, but they can't break through one little coma?

Maggie: Why isn't anyone telling us what's going on?

Greenlee: Maybe this is one of those "no news is good news."

Maria: Has anyone seen Erica?

Maggie: Why?

Opal: Is there an update?

Ryan: What's going on?

Reggie: You can tell us. We're family.

Myrtle: We all are.

Palmer: Is there any change?

Maria: I'm sorry. I don't have anything new to report. Greenlee? Have you seen Jackson? Is he still here?

Greenlee: Maybe he's with Erica, in the cafeteria or the chapel?

Maria: Ok, can you do me a favor, please, and get him here as soon as you can?

Greenlee: What is it?

Maria: I just -- I need Erica here as fast as possible, ok? Thanks.

Kendall: My sister? How do you know my sister?

Father Clarence: Oh, Bianca and I are well acquainted. We're a bit off the beaten track here, so it's gratifying when people -- especially young ones like yourself and Bianca -- drop in to see us.

Kendall: Bianca was here?

Father Clarence: Well, last Christmas Eve. She was deeply troubled, brokenhearted. She was looking for some answers. Perhaps you'll find what you're looking for here, too, Kendall.

Tad: I'm sorry. We all know how much you love that baby.

Erica: All this time you thought that Bess was yours.

J.R.: Bess is my daughter.

Adam: Son --

J.R.: No, Dad. Tell me that you don't believe Babe's lie?

Erica: Babe didn't lie about Bess. Bess is Bianca's daughter, not yours and not Babe's. She's Bianca's baby, and her name is Miranda Montgomery.

Jack: We've come to take Miranda back to her mother.

Kendall: How do you know my name?

Father Clarence: Oh, Bianca must have mentioned it, just like she probably mentioned me and my church here.

Kendall: Now, I told you I got lost.

Father Clarence: Ah. Then we are destined to meet. I am Father Clarence.

Kendall: Hi. How do you know that I'm Bianca's sister?

Father Clarence: Ooh, family resemblance.

Kendall: No, we don't look anything alike.

Father Clarence: Not to the casual observer, but I look deeper. Your eyes have the same searching look.

Kendall: Such a minister thing to say.

Father Clarence: Is it? Ah -- would you hang on to the baby Jesus for me? I bet you no other minister has said that to you. I need to clean up the manger. As I recall, Bianca loved our crèche here.

Kendall: Well, do you recall what you and Bianca talked about?

Father Clarence: Oh, we talked about love, life, trust, belief.

Kendall: You run a few sermons by her?

Father Clarence: Oh, no, she picked up something she needed here. See, Bianca didn't think she could love the baby of the man who attacked her.

Kendall: And you convinced her to go for it.

Father Clarence: Or Bianca tapped into a well of love and understanding. She learned what he knew -- that all children need caring and love, that all children are innocent, and they don't carry the sins of the father. Bianca has great wisdom and a great deal of love to give.

Kendall: Well, brilliant move, padre. You totally screwed up Bianca's life.

Edmund: I don't suppose you'd know her prognosis?

Zach: According to Maria, it's not good.

Edmund: Get that for me?

[While Zach holds Bianca's door open, Edmund enters the hospital room]

Ethan: Did Maria tell you anything?

Danielle: Not a word.

Reggie: She didn't have to. You could tell by the look on her face that Bianca's not doing too good.

Ryan: Bianca's got an interesting group of friends.

Danielle: Yeah, you'd think all the positive energy we're sending Bianca would help.

Reggie: Yeah. It's going to take a serious miracle to bring Bianca back.

Lily: Well, let's get one -- a miracle!

Reggie: You can't just, like, order one like some pizza or something.

Lily: But miracles happen every day. That's what I've heard -- "miracles happen every single day."

Ethan: Well, yes, but for some people, just getting to work on time is a miracle.

Ryan: A miracle is -- well, everybody thinks it's -- they can't happen, it's impossible.

Reggie: But it happens anyway, so that's a miracle.

Lily: But if it's impossible, then it's impossible.

Danielle: Most times, almost always. But every once in a while, very rarely --

Reggie: The impossible happens.

Lily: And that's a miracle?

Reggie: Right.

Myrtle's voice: Mona, darling, I'm handing this ball to you because nobody seems to be listening to us sinners down here. So it's up to you to get the attention of the Almighty for Bianca. So, darling, will you please ask him nicely to have a real good look at what's going on here? And please ask him to give Bianca a break.

J.R.: I don't blame you for grabbing on to Babe's craziness when it comes to my daughter. I know that it probably helps you deal with the pain. Now, if my daughter were Bianca's and something happened to her, part of Bianca would still live on. But I cannot allow you to use my little girl to keep this fantasy going.

Erica: It is not a fantasy.

Tad: J.R., its time for you to accept the truth. This isn't some kind of charade for Bianca's benefit. It's a fact. That baby is hers. We have the proof to back it up.

Erica: J.R., we ran a new DNA test, and it proves that your Bess is really Bianca's Miranda.

J.R.: And the test you did before proved the opposite. You ran it.

Tad: It was wrong. This one was right.

Jack: J.R., we are not trying to steal this child.

Tad: She's Bianca's baby.

J.R.: Which one of your contacts faked this document?

Jack: No, no, this test was monitored from start to finish by Judge Lampert.

J.R.: That's what I walked in on the other day. They have a judge in their pocket. So whose DNA did you switch for Bess'? Kendall's could be a pretty good match.

Erica: No, we used a sample from Bess.

J.R.: You couldn't have. Bess has been with me or --

Adam: We went to a private DNA lab, and I witnessed the procedure.

J.R.: You -- you did this?

Father Clarence: We all suffer loss, we all suffer grief.

Kendall: No, you give it a rest, Father, ok? I swear, if you lecture me, I will -- I will smash each and every one of these statues into dust.

Father Clarence: If it'll make you feel any better, I'll get you a hammer.

Kendall: Yeah, I'm sure.

Father Clarence: Ah. Your flesh and blood -- they are -- they don't ache, they don't cry.

Kendall: Well, crying's useless. It's as useless as praying.

Father Clarence: Sometimes it seems that way.

Kendall: No, there's no "seems" about it. You pray for someone to love and to love you back, you find it, and then -- bam -- they get taken away. Bianca loved Miranda, you take Miranda away. I love Bianca, and you take Bianca away. So that's two for your side. What's left for me?

Father Clarence: You have ears, and you don't hear. You have eyes, and you don't see.

Kendall: No, forget it, Father. Forget it. I'm not buying secondhand laughs from God.

Opal's voice: Dear Lord, I usually keep out of your business. You do a real good job keeping mankind going despite our inclination to do ourselves and each other in. But what's happening now in this little speck of dust called Pine Valley -- just check your paperwork again, could you, because it just -- it isn't right.

Palmers voice: "Our father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done --" no, no. This can't be your will to take this girl away from us. Please, Lord, please.

Ryan: No luck?

Greenlee: I checked all over the hospital. I left messages everywhere.

Ryan: Well, he'll pick one up soon.

Greenlee: Not soon enough. All the horrible people roaming the earth -- there's terrorists and child abusers and murderers -- why Bianca?

Ryan: Life's not always fair.

Greenlee: Try never. I'm sick of it.

Maggie: If I had been closer, more available -- I should have gone with her to Florida.

Jonathan: You're going to make a wonderful doctor. You've already got the God complex down. Hey, listen, I have a healthy ego, and I know that I can't rig fate. And, Maggie, as astoundingly amazing as you are, neither can you.

Edmund: Wherever you are, you have to find your way back. No matter how hard it is, no matter how long it takes, you have to remember that it's worth it. I guarantee you. I'm waiting, and everyone -- everybody who loves you is waiting. Come on, Bianca, it's Christmas. What are you waiting for?

Lily: Bianca, it's me, Lily. I wanted to bring you a miracle, but I'm still not exactly sure what that means. Reggie says they just happen. And that might be scary, so I'll just wait here with you in case a miracle decides to show up.

Father Clarence: Ah, this air pollution is so bad these days. It'll be a miracle if we can clean it up so our babies can breathe again, but we can do it.

Kendall: You're an optimist.

Father Clarence: And you're a pessimist.

Kendall: Yeah, well, pessimists are never disappointed.

Father Clarence: "No pessimist ever found the secret of the stars or sailed to an uncharted land or opened a new doorway to the human spirit."

Kendall: Which holy man said that?

Father Clarence: Helen Keller. Look, Kendall, you're right. Life is tough, very tough.

Kendall: Well, finally, something I agree with.

Father Clarence: Well, life is not for sissies. It's very tough. And anything we love is going to grow old, die, get lost, stolen, disappear, but that's the deal and we have to put up with it.

Kendall: Ok, and this is supposed to make me feel better how?

Father Clarence: Sadness and grief -- they're always going to be with us. They're like a puppy following us all through our life. That's the deal.

Kendall: I promised Miranda a puppy once from the pound. I couldn't keep that promise, and I will never make another one as long as I live.

Father Clarence: What is the opposite of faith?

Kendall: Reality?

Father Clarence: Fear is the opposite of faith.

Kendall: Yeah, well, of course I'm afraid. My sister may die.

Father Clarence: What are you going to do, give up, give in?

Kendall: No, I don't -- I don't want to, but what else can I do?

Father Clarence: Fight to keep Bianca alive.

Kendall: Fight how?

Father Clarence: Reach out to Bianca with your faith, not your fear. Keep fighting to keep Bianca alive.

J.R.: You couldn't have done that, Dad. Not to me.

Adam: I had to know the truth.

J.R.: I told you the truth. What'd they offer you? What'd they use to turn you -- oh -- Colby. You traded my daughter to Tad, exchange for yours.

Tad: J.R., Paul Cramer was to blame for this.

J.R.: No, Paul Cramer is dead. It's no wonder that all of you would try to pin it on him.

Erica: No, Paul Cramer switched the babies at the crash site.

Adam: We're all victims here, son, you especially.

J.R.: Do you expect -- do you know what you're saying? Do you actually believe that beautiful little girl was fathered by Michael Cambias? You held her. You sung to her. And you know in your heart that she is ours!

Adam: No. The test was legitimate.

J.R.: You're good. You're so good. Who else could fool Adam Chandler? Jamie put you up to this, didn't he? Babe and Jamie wanted payback, so they had to hit me right where it hurts.

Jack: No, no, no, no, no, J.R., this is not about payback. This is not about revenge. Your baby, your son died in that helicopter crash. It was his incubator --

J.R.: No, no, my baby did not die! Paul Cramer told us that my --

Erica: Paul Cramer lied. I'm so sorry, J.R.

Jack: Look, these results --

Erica: Paul Cramer lied.

Jack: They don't lie.

J.R.: They're bogus!

Erica: J.R., please. This could be the defining moment of Bianca's entire life, and yours. Please do the right thing. You can do the right thing, or you can traumatize Miranda. That beautiful little baby can wind up paying for this for the rest of her life!

J.R.: Miranda doesn't have a life! There is no Miranda!

Erica: We don't have to ask your permission.

Jack: We don't. These test results will stand up in any court of law.

Tad: J.R., don't make this tougher on yourself.

Jack: Don't make us call in the police here, son.

J.R.: What? You take a lesson here, Dad, because this is what a real father does. You want my daughter? Hmm? You want my daughter? But you're going to have to kill me to get to her.

Stuart: What child is this who laid to rest on Mary's lap on Mary -- doesn't seem to be a whole lot of Christmas spirit in this room.

Adam: This is not a good time.

Stuart: Yeah, I can tell that. J.R. looks like he needs a break. You got a minute?

Adam: For God's sakes, Stuart, let us handle this.

Erica: Adam, Stuart might be just what we need.

Stuart: I won't take long.

Jack: Don't be long.

Stuart: Ok, now, bring me up to speed.

J.R.: They're trying to take Bess away from me.

Adam: I never should have agreed to this test. I should have told you all to go to hell.

Erica: Oh, Adam, you wanted to know the truth as much as I did.

Adam: I've lost my son. For what?

Erica: You mean Bianca's in a coma, so she doesn't matter? Bianca's expendable? She's probably going to die anyway, so it doesn't matter if her child ever knows the truth? Is that what you're saying?

Jack: No, no, no, Adam is not saying that.

Erica: Yes, he was thinking it. All right, Adam, you think you've "lost" your son? You can find him. If I lose Bianca -- oh, Merry Christmas to you, too, Adam. Your faith is inspiring.

Stuart: I was wrecked like that once, but I was lucky, because before Cindy died, she showed me the beauty inside the pain. And then she was gone, but I wasn't so lonesome.

J.R.: I don't have a son. I have a daughter who is alive and well upstairs. They're wrong. Bess is mine.

Stuart: That explains a lot.

J.R.: No. No, it doesn't. You're not even listening to me!

Stuart: No -- do you remember when you were 6, and I asked you if you had burned out that electric outlet in your room and you said "No, no, no" so many times and so loud and so long that you burst a blood vessel in your forehead?

J.R.: What's wrong with you? You can't stay on the same subject!

Stuart: I could smell the burnt wiring, and behind the chair -- and you threw your jacket over it -- behind that I could see the soot all over the outlet. You had -- you'd put your dad's record player with your entire train set.

J.R.: I was a kid, Uncle Stuart! God!

Stuart: Listen to me. Listen. If you were really sure, if you were positive that Bess was your child, then you'd be calm and cool. You'd let her go off and see Bianca. Why not? You'd get her back in the end. You wouldn't burst a blood vessel over it.

J.R.: I'm not.

Stuart: J.R., don't make this any worse. Ok? Just let go. Help Bianca and her little girl.

Lily: Bianca might hear me.

Maria: Well, we're not sure, but I think so. And you know what? I'm in favor of anything that might make us feel better and might reach Bianca.

Lily: Yes. I'm in favor of that, too.

Maria: Ok, well, why don't you stay here with her and sit with her and talk with her and make her feel a little less alone?

Lily: Alone isn't always bad. It's safe when you're just by yourself. I used to shut the world of people out all the time. I'd focus my mind somewhere deep inside. Is that what you're doing now, Bianca?

Greenlee's voice: You'd think I'd be comfortable with this by now, even though --

Ryan's voice: I only do this when I'm at a complete loss.

Greenlee's voice: Powerless. But isn't that when you're supposed to step in?

Ryan's voice: This isn't for me. Bianca needs your help.

Greenlee's voice: So if you could help her --

Ryan's voice: Or tell us what we can do --

Greenlee's voice: Please? We can't do this alone.

Father Clarence: Well, it seems like we're finished here.

Kendall: Wait. Well, how do I fight for Bianca?

Father Clarence: Ah, if I tell you, it won't amount to much, will it?

Kendall: Oh -- well, you haven't helped me one bit.

Father Clarence: Haven't I? Well, I hope I'll have more success with my next appointment.

Kendall: I wasn't an appointment. I just wandered in here.

Father Clarence: And I've enjoyed our visit. But I have appointments with people much worse off than you -- people who are in danger of losing their souls. You, my dear, have everything you need.

Kendall: How can you even say that when --

[Baby cries]

Stuart: J.R., the love that you and Bess have for each other will never die, not if you do what's right for her.

J.R.: Who knows what that is?

Stuart: You do -- in your heart. Sometimes, holding on too tight is worse than letting go. Just ask your dad.

Adam: You gentlemen have all the answers. What's my next move? Have a memorial service for a grandson I never knew? Or how about a marker on a tiny, empty grave?

Erica: Adam, I don't have the answers. But I do know that there is help out there. There is counseling and there is --

Adam: Oh, shut up, Erica. Just shut up.

Stuart: J.R.'s ready.

J.R.: I'm going to go upstairs and get Bess.

Tad: I'll go with you.

J.R.: I want to say good-bye to her alone.

Tad: All right. I'll wait outside the nursery.

J.R.: It's not enough for you to win? But you got to keep twisting that knife, don't you?

Tad: It's not about that. I'm just afraid you'll grab the baby and try to run.

J.R.: I'd never get away with it.

Jack: J.R., just so you know, all the secret exits from this property are being covered.

Erica: J.R., please, just get Miranda. Bianca's waiting.

Stuart: Tell Bianca I'm praying for her.

Erica: Oh, thank you, Stuart. Thank you so much.

J.R.: Don't worry, Bess. Your daddy's smarter than all those people, and he loves you very much, more than anyone ever could. That's why I'm ready. And that's why I have a secret way for us to get out even your grandpa doesn't know about.

Erica: What did Greenlee say?

Jack: Just that Maria needed to talk to you right away. Maria? It's Jack.

Maria: Jackson, is Erica with you?

Jack: Yeah, she's right here. What's wrong?

Maria: Ok, can you get her back here to the hospital as soon as you can, please? We need to talk.

Jack: I --

Erica: Well, Jack, what did Maria say?

Jack: Get J.R. We need to get Miranda and get down to the hospital right away.

Erica: Oh, God. Bianca, hold on.

Reggie's voice: Please, God. Bianca's the real deal. She believes in you. Believe in her. Don't let her die.

Danielle's voice: Lord, please don't do this. Look at everybody in this chapel praying for her. Half of these people don't even like each other, but they all love Bianca. Doesn't that show you who she is?

Ethan's voice: Bianca was my friend even when I believed my last name was Cambias. She should have hated me.

Edmund's voice: Please, God, bring her back whole and happy. Please, just bring her back.

Maggies voice: You took her baby. Isn't that enough?

Jonathan's voice: I don't want her to die.

Myrtle's voice: Dear God, we got plenty of troubles in this world, and you know each and every one of them -- war, famine, disease, man's inhumanity to man, and sometimes plain stupidity. Well, we would like these things cleaned up and tidied up and finished. I know that's a tall order, and we've got to do our part, but you alone are the only person to save Bianca. Dear God, we need a miracle. Please give us one. Just one.

Lily: I felt safe. But I missed out on lots of things -- like you are now. Even if you're scared, it's better to be a part of the world as much as you can. That's what I'm learning now. And I'm less scared -- less often, anyway. I think I'm learning that some things are only frightening in my mind, and I'm not as frightened. I'm not frightened. I'm not frightened. We're not alone. Is this a miracle?

[Lily tenuously takes Bianca's hand for a moment]

Kendall: God, help me. I have lost whatever faith I had with Miranda. It's been fear for so long, and I'm tired of it. I'm sick to death of it, actually. But I don't know how to believe. Help me. Please, help me. I have to believe for Bianca. She'll be all right. Right? She'll be all right, won't she? I'm trying, God. I'm really -- I'm really trying here. Please let her live. Please. I believe. I believe, I believe. I swear to you. I swear I believe.

Tad: Wherever you are, Dixie, I wouldn't -- I wouldn't blame you if you were disappointed in me. But I didn't have a choice. Didn't know where to turn. I just had to do what I felt was right. Then again, what do I know? The only thing I'm sure of right now is that as much as I miss you, every day J.R. misses you a hundred times more, even if he doesn't know it. And I don't know how to help him. Even if I did, he -- he doesn't trust he anymore. So if -- if you got any ideas, for God's sake, give me a hint, because our boy -- our boy has never been more lost than he is right now.

Erica: Come on, Adam. Come on! Bianca's waiting for her baby! What is taking him so long? Oh, God. Why doesn't he hurry?

Adam: Gone.

[With the baby bag slung over his shoulder, J.R. manages to make his way through a secret passageway out to his car and places Bess inside. Once in the driver's seat, though, he's surprised to see a man sitting next to him]]

J.R.: All safe and sound. Who are you? What do you want?

Father Clarence: I need your help.

J.R.: I'm in a hurry.

Father Clarence: Ah, but this is important. Very important.

>> On the next "All My Children" --

Brooke: Tell me why I shouldn't rip you apart.

Maria: We may have to put Bianca on a respirator to keep her alive.

David: I failed you, but Erica won't.

Tad: Oh, no, no, no!

Adam: He found another way out.
