All My Children Transcript Wednesday 9/1/04
Proofread by Gisele
Adam: All right, son. J.R., I want you to stay calm. Bess is perfectly safe. After I'm done with Zach Slaterís little entertainment tonight, Iím going to take Bess and her nanny to a new, secured location. Now, don't panic if you don't hear from me for a while, all right? Just -- just remember, you stay strong. We're soon going to be flying high -- you, me, and our precious Bess. Scotch rocks, please.
David: Next round's on me, Adam.
Zach: I've stunned you all speechless.
Jack: Yes, let me -- you're asking us to play a game cheerfully known as "Murder"?
Greenlee: Not to be a party pooper, but I don't get the game-event connection.
Ryan: What does raising money for Biancaís charity have to do with running around your casino trying to kill somebody?
Maria: It is in astoundingly bad taste.
Erica: I think it might be best if we say our good-nights now.
Kendall: Yes, before the lights go out and someone starts screaming bloody murder.
David: Give it up, Adam. Where is my daughter's baby?
Adam: She's playing peekaboo. Not to worry.
David: That's very funny, Adam. But you should know that Iíve also devised my own game -- a little more adult, but I guarantee you you won't like how it plays out.
Adam: I assume it involves the same old chest-thumping and empty threats?
David: The rules are very simple, Adam. Surrender Bess or forfeit everything.
Zach: I meant no offense.
Greenlee: Most fundraisers, you take home a door prize or a floral arrangement, not a knife in the back.
Jack: You know, maybe if you would just explain the point of all this to us.
Zach: Raising money for a worthy cause.
Erica: How does it work?
Zach: Well, my people will stage a whodunit. One of you will be the victim, somebody else the killer, the rest of you detectives, suspects, and we will spend a couple of fun-filled hours just going after clues and then we will meet back here.
Kendall: And start pointing fingers.
Zach: Yes. And for each correct guess, the casino will donate $100,000 to the Miranda Montgomery Center.
Greenlee: Hmm. That adds up.
Zach: If your guesses are correct, yes.
Greenlee: Starting now, I channel Agatha Christie.
Zach: You're in, then?
Greenlee: I'm in. Ry?
Ryan: Yeah, sure. I'm in, too.
Kendall: Me, three! In the name of charity, who wouldn't enjoy a fun little homicide?
Erica: Bianca, sweetheart, I thought you went home.
Bianca: I did.
Erica: Well, then, what are you doing back?
Bianca: Well, I felt left out. Everybody here is celebrating Miranda. I have the rest of my life to take a nap. So, what did I walk in on?
Kendall: Hey, Binks, you know what? Let's -- let's go hit the casino and pump the dollar slots. Come on.
Bianca: Kendall, what are you doing?
Kendall: Well, I just -- I feel lucky tonight. Let's go.
Bianca: All right, well, then you go. I want to know why everybody turned into ice statues when I walked in the door. You're still doing it. Mom, what's going on?
Erica: Just a slight difference of opinion, that's all.
Bianca: About what?
Jack: About a rather unorthodox way of raising money for the Miranda Montgomery Center.
Zach: Not everyone believes that the end justifies the means.
Erica: Bianca, sweetheart, maybe you should go with your sister. Or, you know, maybe you should go up to one of the suites, lie down.
Bianca: No. There's something going on here that you guys don't want me to know about. Why doesn't somebody let me in on the game?
Greenlee: That's exactly what Zach is proposing -- a game. A nice, friendly high-stakes game of murder.
Maria: Bianca, we don't have to play.
Ryan: No, it's totally your call.
Greenlee: Whatever you decide, we'll do.
Bianca: Well, I guess it should be my decision because most of you have only been accused of murder. I'm the only one here who's actually killed someone.
Adam: Our host is very keen on us attending his little after-dinner nonsense.
David: How long have we known each other, Adam?
Adam: Well, what, have I missed an anniversary? Oh, which one? Lead? Plutonium?
David: My first recollection of you -- that hospital stay. You were under my care, and some incompetent misunderstood my instructions. You damn near died.
Adam: Yes. You stepped in at the exact moment and saved my life.
David: Hey, it could've gone either way.
Adam: Your ego is much too bloated to lose a patient on your watch.
David: Well, I'm sure I can arrange for you to pull up another hospital bed and we'll see.
Adam: No, thanks. I'll take my chances on the outside.
David: The chances are yours to take, Adam. But we live in an uncertain world here, and every so often the good folks of Pine Valley -- they take leave of their senses. Regular citizens -- law-abiding, self-respecting -- but pushed beyond the limit, they're all capable of performing unconscionable acts.
Adam: Should I tell everyone to skip the punch and go straight to the decaf?
David: Hmm. They have nothing to fear from me.
Adam: But I do? Should I get a bodyguard? How about a taster to gurgle my cabernet?
David: You're not listening to me, Adam.
David: We have both done things in our past that we've grown to regret.
Adam: Speak for yourself.
David: I'm asking you calmly to stop what you've put into motion before history comes back to haunt us. Don't let us go so far that we can't come back. Return Bess to her mother and let this all go away.
Adam: You forgot to say "please."
David: You know something, Adam? I have to admit -- there was a part of me that was hoping that you would stay true to character. You have just given me complete freedom to make your life a waking nightmare.
Bianca: Better be careful. The elephant in the room has a smoking gun in its trunk. Some of you must remember what tonight is. One year ago, I killed Michael Cambias.
Erica: Well, of course I remember, honey.
Kendall: Yeah, but it was in self-defense. I mean, he was going to hurt you again.
Erica: But of course, Zach can be forgiven for not knowing that it was the anniversary of that monster's death.
Bianca: There is nothing to forgive. You don't have to protect me from my memories. I live with them every day. I also read the newspaper and watch the nightly news, unfiltered by my loving family. Kendall, what happened to you?
Kendall: Uh -- nothing. I just -- I grabbed the wrong end of my razor in the shower.
Bianca: It looks like it really hurts.
Kendall: No, it's fine. I don't -- I don't feel it. I don't even feel it. Don't worry about it.
Bianca: Ok. Well, if that's the only bloodshed we're going to experience tonight and if everybody else is up for a game of murder, then count me in.
Jack: Bianca, are you sure you want to do this?
Bianca: Yes. Look, I came back here to support Zach and everything that he's done for Miranda, not to toss a wet blanket on the party.
Ryan: I'll tell you what -- I'll cut you a check from Cambias right now for the whole pot and we can just skip the game all together.
Bianca: Well, what fun would that be? Look, I've played this game before and it's a trip -- get all caught up in the mystery and the fantasy of all of it. I say let the games begin.
Zach: Yes, why not? Now, these are little envelopes that hold your character descriptions and clues that will help you in this game. Now, you're not going to find out who the murderer and who the victim is till much later.
David: Who do I have to sleep with to be the murderer?
Greenlee: I'd better see what's bugging David.
Ryan: All right.
Kendall: You know, if I were you, on a night like tonight I would go head-to-toe Kevlar.
Greenlee: We actually own a bulletproof vest. I gave it to Ryan as a wedding gift.
Kendall: Oh, well, then you better strap it on, honey, because you are number one on someone's hit list, whether you pull a victim card or not.
David: Black -- nice touch. Let me guess -- the color of death.
Zach: Have you seen Adam Chandler?
David: Yeah. He's in the bar, contemplating his life expectancy.
Jack: Well, you ready to play?
Erica: Well, I was having a much better time upstairs.
Jack: Most fun Iíve ever had without laughing. I guess we're going to have to split up. Let's see.
Erica: "Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha," what?
Jack: Your dramatic persona for the evening -- "La Dolce Diva." You're a famous celebrity, multiple divorcee -- ahem -- a glamour queen with a checkered past, but devoted to all your children.
Erica: Well, that will be a stretch, but I think I can play the part. You --
Erica: The honorable "I. M. Justice," a circuit court judge known for his objectivity and fairness except when his family is under threat.
Jack: I wonder what point Slater is trying to make, exactly.
Erica: Any resemblance between these characters and us is purely intentional. Ah, I can only imagine what David has drawn.
David: All right, let's see. I'm the infamous Dr. Moreau, "a diabolical chemist who uses humans as guinea pigs. You enjoy golf, long walks on the beach, and preying on other men's wives and girlfriends."
Bianca: Wow. Well, I'm a duchess. "Ivory-skinned and sad-eyed, you spend most of your time alone dreaming of lost love." David, is there -- is there any word yet on Bess, where J.R. might be hiding her?
David: I'm working on it.
Bianca: I've been scared to death ever since she went missing, and Babe is just a total mess.
David: Yeah. We're going to get that baby back. You have my word.
Bianca: You know Adam and J.R. have enough power and money to make that --
David: The Chandlers are not the only ones in this town that have the power to make things happen. Everything Iím doing tonight is for that little girl and Miranda.
Ryan: You like it?
Greenlee: Almost as much as my Dynamite Kiddo decoder ring.
Ryan: So you -- you ready to slip into character?
Greenlee: Your card says you're a gorgeous stud muffin/hero, and don't look know, but the woman who loves you more than life is right under your nose.
Ryan: That is uncanny. Yours says that you are the hero's best friend/soon-to-be lover, but it doesn't give me a hint towards the next clue.
Greenlee: Hmm. Read my lips.
Kendall: Ethan, come on, we need to hurry up and prove that you're a Cambias, that you can get what's yours.
Ethan: Why, Kendall, your unselfish offer of help is so touching. But I think the chances of me ousting Lavery at this point are slim to none.
Ryan: Hey, mate? Over here, we actually drive on the right side.
David: All right, let me guess -- you're the control freak that gaslights innocent women and steals their children.
Adam: And you would be the pied poisoner of Pine Valley?
David: It's a fine night for a game of murder, wouldn't you say?
Adam: If good fortune completely fails me, Iíll see you later.
David: Or not.
Ryan: I'm afraid that Edmund and I were right. It's going to turn all kinds of ugly for someone tonight.
Zach's voice: You don't get to ask any questions.
Ryan: Well, I have a feeling Iím not going to like the answer.
Zach: Do you really think you can walk into my private office and play with things that don't belong to you? That might have worked with Cambias Industries. It's not going to work with me.
Ryan: You know, it's funny you mention my company. Erica, Kendall, all these people that you happen to be fascinated with -- they all seem to have a connection to the killing of Michael Cambias. So, what's your connection, Slater?
Ethan: Do I have the pleasure of meeting the duchess?
Bianca: Well, yes, you do. And you, my gentle dauphin -- you're my first royal.
Ethan: And you're mine.
Bianca: No, really? You're from England. There's more royals per square kilometer than anywhere else in the world, right?
Ethan: No, unfortunately, my invitation for tea with the queen was lost in the post. It was awful.
Bianca: Oh, really? Well, I think we have the same first clue.
Ethan: Let's see. "You'll have to fathom this on your own. Something is fishy."
Bianca: I have a feeling our host wants us to go to the beach.
Ethan: I think so. Safety in numbers?
Bianca: Sounds right to me.
Kendall: You promised Ryan would get his. Now, give it to him now, or I'll blow the lid off this whole setup!
Greenlee: There's nobody in here. We're supposed to be looking for clues.
Ryan: Oh, yeah, but you -- you smell too --
Greenlee: Good, because we're bottling it.
Ryan: The new Enchantment signature perfume?
Greenlee: Mm-hmm. While you've been checking out Zach Slater, we came up with the perfect fragrance.
Ryan: Yeah? Well, I happen to have a lot more on my mind right now than Zach.
Greenlee: Like what?
Ryan: Like spending a little time with the woman that I fell in love with. And lucky for me, she just happens to be my wife.
Kendall: Is this what you call Ryan getting what he deserves? This -- this is some smack-down, Zach. Wake me when they start begging for mercy.
Zach: Is it my turn now?
Kendall: No, tonight was supposed to be about Ryan taking the fall -- payback in spades for every lie, every cheat, every betrayal. This is not payback, Zach. This is nookie on a Navajo rug.
Zach: Focus, Kendall. Not on the small screen -- on the big picture. If we can't keep control, we both lose.
Kendall: Are you playing me, Zach? See, because I thought that we were on the same page here.
Zach: We are. I'm asking you to be patient.
Kendall: Well, you must have some strategy. I mean, there's got to be some trick up your sleeve or something. There's more to this murder game.
Zach: The less you know about my plans, the better. In case of capture, Ryan can't torture it out of you.
Kendall: You can cut the sarcasm.
Zach: And you can get ahold of yourself. Play the game. There's a fine line between winning and losing. If you can't keep your balance, you're the one going to take the fall.
Greenlee: Feels like this room was waiting for us.
Ryan: Yeah. Well, anything is possible. We proved that.
Greenlee: Why did we make everything so complicated?
Ryan: I think maybe because it's half the fun of falling in love.
Greenlee: What's the other half?
Ryan: Finding out that you didn't fall alone.
Greenlee: Brave us. We worked without a net for so long before we even got married.
Ryan: Yeah. It's our reward for risking it all.
Greenlee: To working without a net.
Zach: Maybe you should go. Find another clue and get into the game. The last thing you want is to watch Ryan and Greenlee make the beast with two backs.
[Ryan and Greenlee laugh]
Erica: David. What are you doing here? We both got the same clue?
David: "Sides of eight, don't be late." This looks like the place.
Erica: Well, it appears that Zach Slater has connived to get us to run into each other. I just can't for the life of me understand why.
David: Oh, I'm sure you can figure it out if you wanted to, Erica. We're playing a game of murder, remember? Well, here we are, alone in the dark, in the shadows, me playing a chemist known for cooking up strange potions, you a well-known celebrity known for going to extremes to protect her children. Starting to feel familiar?
Erica: Oh, my God. That night outside of Michael Cambias' condo.
David: That's right. And inside.
Erica: When we were trying to destroy the bastard. But how would Zach Slater know about that? And why? Why would he wants us to relive that horrible night?
David: Well, why not? It's not like it cost him anything. I mean, he's a casino operator, right? He only plays when the game is stacked in his favor.
Ethan: Watch out for the rock there. Just --
Bianca: Oh -- thank you, milord.
Ethan: You're welcome.
Bianca: Well, I don't see any envelopes here.
Ethan: You know, maybe it got washed out with the tide.
Bianca: Or maybe we just botched the clue.
Ethan: It was pretty straight-on. A fathom is a nautical measure of water, and the dead fish over there rather speaks for itself.
Ethan: For this, I went to Oxford.
Bianca: Well, maybe the dead fish is our victim, and the crime is floundercide.
Ethan: Good one.
Ethan: It's a wonderful setting, at any rate.
Bianca: Mm-hmm. You looking towards home?
Ethan: Feels a long way away, like another lifetime. You know, you have a lot of people looking out for you.
Bianca: You mean back at the hotel tonight?
Ethan: They were -- they were afraid this game might upset you.
Bianca: It's not the game. It's the memories.
Ethan: Of Michael Cambias?
Bianca: Your uncle is dead, Ethan, but there's no forgetting him.
Ethan: How does -- how do you feel about it?
Bianca: Well, some days are better than others. There are times when I feel like my old self again. But then sometimes it's not so good.
Ethan: Does it get any easier? Living with it -- the rape?
Bianca: Well, I used to play the what-if game a lot. What if Michael Cambias had never come to town? What if I hadn't gone home that night? But I don't do that anymore. I mean, I can wish that Michael never existed, but then I wouldn't have gotten to know Miranda and all that love. So, to answer your question, yes, it does get easier if I focus on the positive.
Ethan: You're beautiful, you know that?
Bianca: Thank you.
Ethan: Especially when you smile. If things were different, I'd ask you out.
Bianca: What, you mean on a date?
Ethan: Yeah. Movies, dinner, the works. I'd like to get to know you better.
Bianca: As a friend.
Ethan: That would do for starters.
Bianca: Well, that's where it would end.
Ethan: I'm not your type.
Bianca: Oh, no. I'm not yours, either. I'm gay.
Ethan: My bad luck and some other woman's good fortune.
Bianca: Thank you. Her name is Lena. So, you don't have somebody waiting for you back home?
Ethan: I've been chasing something else. Family.
Ethan: Well, life in Pine Valley -- one surprise after another.
Bianca: Maybe we should go find our host and get him to point us towards our next clue.
Ethan: Excellent idea.
[Knock on door]
Ryan: Could be the killer.
Greenlee: Killers don't usually knock.
Ryan: Well, whoever it is isn't going away.
Greenlee: I guess we have to get back in the game.
Ryan: Wait, wait, wait! What about us?
Greenlee: Us has waited this long. Us can wait a little bit longer.
Maria: Zach, you in there?
Ryan: Uh -- Maria, hold on.
Maria: Hey. Is Zach in here?
Ryan: No, no. No, he's not. Haven't seen him.
Maria: I'm sorry. I -- well, Iím looking for him.
Ryan: Well, he's not here. We haven't seen him since the whole murder game started. Is there a problem?
Greenlee: Um, I better find my next clue, or Biancaís charity is going to be out 100 thou. I love you.
Ryan: Why would you think that Slater was here? Maria? Is this -- is this the place that you two were hanging out when you were together?
Maria: Once upon a time in a desert, yeah. I mean, this is an exact replica of our house, literally, from the ceiling to the Navajo rug you're standing on.
Ryan: Wow, that's either really, really romantic or a whole different level of stalker, and I'm leaning toward stalker.
Maria: No, that's how much he loved me.
Maria: Have you ever done anything for love, like really great and outrageous, something you couldn't fit in a chocolate box?
Ryan: You mean like renting out an entire circus big top?
Maria: Yeah, yeah.
Ryan: Ok, so Zach and I share a -- you know -- a thing for getting big, outrageous wild presents, but that's where the similarities end.
Maria: No, you know, you might be a lot more alike than you think.
Ryan: No, Maria. You see, in my office, I have a shelf with a razor and some aftershave. But in Zachís office, he has a secret cabinet locked up with surveillance photos of everybody involved in the Cambias murder investigation. Ok, and on top of that, I can trace my past back to the day I was born. Zach's past ends 10 years ago. Now, in my book, that makes the guy a lot more dangerous than romantic.
Maria: I don't know. Maybe now I do.
Erica: It's ghoulish, that's what it is. Zach Slater re-creating the events of Michael Cambias' death.
David: Well, I guess anything goes when the name of the game is murder, huh?
Erica: But it isn't murder. It was self-defense, David.
David: Well, I don't think that Zach is going to call the game on a technicality.
Erica: I don't understand. I really don't. Bianca confessed. I mean, the case has been closed for months. Why would he choose to dredge all this up again?
David: Oh, I don't know. Maybe Slater lacks imagination. Couldn't come up with his own murder scenario, so he lifted it from the newspapers and just plugged us into it. Or maybe he's just angling to find a game where everybody involved hates the person being murdered.
Erica: But Michael Cambias is already dead. So tonight we don't know who the person being murdered is or who the murderer is.
David: Well, it's getting late. Why don't you go find the game mastermind, ok?
Erica: Yes --
David: Maybe he'll give you a clue into the next round.
Erica: Ok. Aren't you coming?
David: No, I think I'll hang out, see if any more of Michaelís enemies show up.
Erica: Ok. Be careful.
Adam: What the devil are you doing here? Don't tell me you're supposed to kill me.
David: Now, that would be far too easy. But we do have unfinished business, Adam.
Maria: I feel like we're talking about two completely different people here. We're talking about the Zach that I knew --
Ryan: And the one that's spreading himself around Pine Valley. On the outside, they're dead ringers.
Maria: Yeah, but, Ryan, on the inside --
Ryan: The Zach that I know seems to be obsessed with the death of Michael Cambias. All right, and the one that you know from the desert -- I mean, he was romantic --
Ryan: But he's just as obsessed and determined to get you back into his life. I mean, just -- you know, like you never left.
Maria: Well, you make it sound like it's a trap.
Ryan: Well, isn't that what it is? I mean, you know, you were happy here. The only memories that you had were here, were with Zach. And then you go back to your old life, and does he let you go? No, he doesn't. He buys a -- he buys a roomful of southwestern furniture to lure you back. I'm saying don't be fooled by a guy trying to re-create a dream that died a long time ago.
Maria: No, I'm not, and I know that I'm not the only reason that he's here in Pine Valley. I just don't know what it is. Edmund thinks it's because of that phone call about murder.
Ryan: So why is he so obsessed with the murder of a rotten little rapist psycho? I mean, has he ever said anything that would explain that?
Maria: No. No, and I can't even think of a single reason that he would be interested in the death of Michael Cambias.
Ryan: So maybe it's not Michael Cambias. Maybe it's the entire Cambias fortune. Enter Ethan. Maybe he's behind Ethan making a grab at the family fortune.
Maria: You think he's planning a billion-dollar rip-off?
Ryan: You know, I'm just thinking out loud.
Ryan: Just -- just please, promise me -- promise me that you'll be extra careful around him. The guy's got layers, you understand? You peel them back, and God knows what you're going to find.
Ryan: Ok? All right.
Maria: Thanks, Ryan.
Ryan: See you.
Singer: Last night I kissed you it was only a dream but all that you were I find it was less than it seemed we spoke soft words you looked better than Iíve ever seen but I have to remind myself it was only a dream but who's to say that it didn't happen? And who's to say that it couldn't happen again? 'Cause I dream for a reason and I need to believe it's real when I dream I feel real again real again I dream for a reason I dream for a reason and I need to believe it's true when I dream I feel real again real again I dream for a reason and my reason is I miss you yeah I miss you miss you
Adam: You're out of your blooming mind if you think Iím going to stay out here alone with you.
David: Believe me, I'm not thrilled to be here alone with you, either.
Adam: Very well. Meeting's adjourned.
David: All right, Adam. Look, I've been giving this a lot of thought, and I think I may have come up with a way for us to bury our differences.
Adam: If it involves me being six feet under, you won't mind if I pass.
David: I think you'll find the solution agreeable to both sides. And neither one of us has to dirty our hands.
Adam: If you can pull that off, you belong in the UN.
David: Well, look, why don't I buy you a drink, and Iíll tell you what's on my mind, ok? Better living through technology.
Maria: I found your little hidden camera back there in the casita. What is this? What do you think you're doing?
David: All right, you megalomaniac. I've given you enough food and water in there to sustain you until I decide what to do with you.
Erica: Yes! I win! You're the murderer, and your victim's in there! Come on, open it up, David. Open it up. Let me see who's in there.
Bianca: Hey. It's not me.
Greenlee: Excuse me?
Bianca: I'm not the killer. At least, not yet.
Greenlee: Let's not talk about the game right now. I need you to get through to Kendall.
Bianca: Greenlee, I refuse to be the go-between for you and my sister anymore.
Greenlee: Even if it saves a life?
Bianca: Greenlee, it's a game.
Greenlee: This isn't about the game. Kendall's been acting really weird lately. I've been spending the whole night looking over my shoulder. She's gone over the edge, and it's your job to pull her back.
Ryan: "To gaze upon all that is beautiful. Belvedere." "Victim"?
>> On the next "All My Children" --
David: Bon voyage, Adam.
Aidan: Zach Slater died ten years ago.
Zach: That's right, Lavery. Play the game.
Greenlee: Kendall is on a one-way trip to psycho land, and I am worried about what she might do to herself.
