All My Children Transcript Wednesday 8/25/04

Tad: Wow. Did you kill it yourself? Just what I need -- a plate full of mercy meat and a hearty helping of pity potatoes.
Krystal: Well, you've been sitting in that hospital, sucking up all that antiseptic air and world's worst coffee. I don't call this pity. I call this humanitarian aid.
Tad: Yeah, but, Krystal, we could have just -- you could have just gone down to the cafeteria.
Krystal: As nice as that sounds, you know, I really need to stay here, keep an eye on nazi nanny, and I really want to pick your brain.
Tad: You want to talk about J.R.?
Krystal: Yeah. Babe has poured her soul into him and that marriage and a whole lot else. If it turns out that J.R. is as bad as it seems, then it's going to be a sad, messed-up world for a whole lot of people.
Tad: Yeah. Armageddon all around.
Krystal: I just don't know if I can stand the wait and the dread much longer. I just wish that there was some way that I could just get it over with, you know, just reveal the truth for everybody to see.
Babe: J.R., I swear to you, this isn't how it seems.
Adam: Easy. Easy, son.
J.R.: Ok, Babe. Then why don't you explain to me what's going on here.
Babe: I know how you must feel.
J.R.: Oh, you do?
Babe: Let's just -- we'll talk about it, just the two of us. Everyone else can leave.
J.R.: No, I think everybody should stay right where they are, considering the circumstances. And while I do appreciate the offer, I really don't need an explanation about what's going on here.
Adam: Are we going to stand here and have a conversation about this while these women loll about in the bed, stark naked?
J.R.: It's all out in the open now. I finally have a handle on your spiritual bond with Bianca, your intense intimacy.
Babe: Bianca is my friend.
J.R.: And it all makes sense, the whole godmother business and why you forgave her for stealing my baby.
Babe: No, J.R. The only reason that Bianca's here is she --
J.R.: No, that is too much information for me. You know, I am either incredibly stupid or you're surprisingly slick, because I never had a clue.
Babe: Because there's nothing to know.
J.R.: No, I thought you were going after my brother, but you went in a whole different direction with this one. I guess James and I have a lot more in common. We both wanted you, we both had you, and we both were conned by you. Who says brothers can't share everything?
Babe: J.R., please, we have to stop this. We just have to talk alone.
Adam: You know, by all means. I intend to have this moment erased from my memory. Please, don't anybody get up to show me out.
J.R.: No, Dad, stay. I'm not finished. I'm going to need a witness for what comes next. You and I have nothing to talk about alone ever again. It's over.
Reggie: We practically carry your stitched-up butt down here, and what do we get for it, huh? Nothing. He makes us stay down here and wait while he looks for Babe with Maggie.
Danielle: The man is on a mission. He needs to keep it on the DL.
Reggie: Oh, so what are you saying, I can't stay cool, stay calm?
Danielle: I'm saying chill, like Jamie said. I mean, he can handle whatever goes down. Any chance we just became invisible?
Erica: Reggie, what are you doing here?
Reggie: Nope. Don't think so.
Tad: Krystal, I don't know how to tell you this. The DA won't press charges against J.R. for drugging Babe.
Krystal: Honey, that dirtbag dealer gave J.R. up.
Tad: That dirtbag dealer's got himself a new attorney, one that's not on Chandler's payroll. He's covering his butt. He's not saying a word.
Krystal: What? It's all on tape. He can't unsay it.
Tad: The tape is inadmissible in a court of law. It's useless. As far as the DA is concerned, it never happened.
Krystal: Oh, ok. Well, that's really nice for him. I wish we could say the same for ourselves. I wish none of this ever happened.
Tad: Well, it did. God help us all.
Krystal: Tad, it's ok to admit it. I know you're relieved that J.R. isn't getting put away.
Tad: No, nothing like that. That's not it at all. I mean, God knows I don't want Dixie's son locked in some cage. Nonetheless, there's got to be some kind of accountability, you know, some punishment, especially after all the things he's done.
Krystal: He knows you know. I think that's some punishment.
Tad: No. Whatever hold I had over J.R. is long gone. I can't reach him anymore. He was the last piece of Dixie that I had. And now that's gone. Oh, all of this will play out one way or another. I just can't see a single option that I like.
Krystal: I hear you.
Tad: He wants Bess. That's the key. And if he takes after Adam, he's going to do anything he has to to get his hands on her.
Krystal: No, he'd better get used to disappointment, because there is no way he is ever going to get that little girl.
Tad: That's wishful thinking, or is there something else you think I should know about?
Bianca: J.R., you have to know that this was not some kind of long-term --
J.R.: Affair? Yeah. Yeah, that's a polite word for it.
Bianca: J.R., just stop and listen.
Babe: I know that you're hurt.
J.R.: You don't know how I feel. And for God's sake, don't open your mouth again, because if I hear one more lie out of that talented little mouth of yours, I'm going to start bleeding from my ears! I cart you back from San Diego when you had nothing to live for. I hand you a platinum-card life, and what do you do to me? You sleep with my brother the first night that you're in town. I mean, we had just gotten married. I mean, how classic is that? And then the lies -- they just kept on coming. Paul Cramer, you lie. You first marriage, you lie. The annulment, you lie. And then once we get the annulment, you lie again.
Babe: I just wanted to love you.
J.R.: No, I defended you! I insulted my father for you. I called my brother a liar for you. Babe, I would have done anything for you and my baby.
Babe: And I would have done anything for you. I have, J.R. I wanted to give you the world.
J.R.: Really? Even when you started sleeping with your best friend? You know, you really topped yourself this time, but cheating is cheating, and, you, my dear, are a pro.
Jamie: Babe? Babe, are you all right?
J.R.: Oh. Oh, this is great. You know, this is really good. You really know how to put on a show, don't you? Come on in, James. Come on in and take a look at what you've been fighting for.
Maggie: I'm sorry. I can't be here right now.
Bianca: Maggie, please, it's not how it looks.
J.R.: "How it looks"? Yeah. Yeah. You guys even use the same lies. How cute is that?
Jamie: What is this?
J.R.: Take a good look at the woman who yanked you around like a dog on a chain, wiped her stilettos over your poor, virgin heart.
Babe: J.R., stop it. This is between you and me.
J.R.: And ignore your lovers, past and present? Oh, don't feel left out, Dad. She would have eventually gotten to you.
Adam: I may be ill.
Jamie: Babe? Bianca? The two of you? How long?
J.R.: She cried on your shoulder and let you play the hero. It was all just an act. I hate what she did to you.
Jamie: She'd sometimes look at me like we had this connection, like we could read each other's minds. I would have done anything she needed me to.
J.R.: Yep, that's her game. You know, you should clue in on this, too, Bianca. She has a way of dressing up libido and making it look like love. You know, she pitted us against each other, you and me -- brothers, best friends. She ripped us apart with her lies.
Babe: And you forgave me for those lies, J.R. We loved each other. You even married me again to make things right. Can't you just take this as a misunderstanding? Don't you ever want to try to forgive me again?
J.R.: Forgive you? Dad, can I borrow your phone?
Babe: Who would you call now?
Adam: Yeah, by all means.
J.R.: I wouldn't want to miss this chance. Smile pretty for the camera, girls.
Bianca: Oh --
Babe: J.R., please don't do this.
J.R.: Oh, yes, yes. I married you because I had to. I married you because I wanted to be the legal father of my daughter, so you'd never be able to take Bess away from me ever again.
Babe: No. No. You're just saying that because you're upset. You married me because you loved me.
J.R.: No, Babe. I married you because I hated you.
Danielle: She's not talking. Maybe we are invisible.
Erica: No. Actually, I'm trying to figure out why you're acting so suspicious. Is it because you're underage or underdressed?
Reggie: I left my tux at home.
Erica: And where's Lily?
Reggie: Lily -- I called Myrtle, and she's Lily-sitting right now. Listen, Erica, Jamie needs me right now, right here, and it's a total emergency.
Erica: I thought that Jamie Martin was in the hospital.
Reggie: We got him an honorable discharge, let's just say, you know, for such a good cause.
Erica: And you would be part of the "we," Danielle?
Danielle: You know who I am?
Erica: Well, yes. I've heard a lot about you.
Danielle: Oh, and I've heard everything about you. Not from the tabloids or anything, but from legit magazines and the Internet. You're mad famous, but you know that, right?
Erica: I've heard rumors. Listen, Jack is going to lose it when he finds out that you're here and Lily's home.
Reggie: Have I mentioned how beautiful you look, with the lights and everything? It's so good.
Erica: Reggie. Reggie, Jack left Lily in your care, not Myrtle's. I mean, at least have the courtesy to tell him yourself.
Reggie: Erica, Jamie needs me. I stick by my friends, no matter what.
Krystal: What I don't understand is why J.R. just couldn't come out and say, "Look, I don't love you anymore, ok?" Yeah, sure, I mean, it would have broken Babe's heart, but she would have sucked it up for the sake of that baby. She would sign those divorce papers. She wouldn't have taken a dime.
Tad: Krystal, it's not about that. It's about Bess. Look, you got to understand what you're in for. A Chandler custody battle is one step above a sudden-death match. It doesn't matter how strong you think Babe is.
Krystal: Babe is going to make sure that that baby gets all the love she needs one way or the other, because love is what Babe's all about. Her husband and her child, they are her world. All this -- this is just window dressing. Love is what makes that little girl tick, and J.R. is just trying to kill that.
Tad: I wish I knew why. He used to be the same way. When he was a boy, he was so full of loving. You should have seen him with Dixie. Now it's all gone. It's such a waste.
Krystal: Tad, we're really sorry for any of the hurt that we've caused, any of the pain that we've caused, but any lie that was ever told was not out of being hateful. Babe was just trying to keep the people that she loves from suffering. She was trying to do the best that she could for the man that made her heart skip a beat.
Tad: Well, it's commendable. The only problem is lies have a way of coming back to slap you in the face. Trust me, I know.
Krystal: Is it so terrible to lie to spare the ones that you love?
Tad: I don't understand. Who are we talking about now?
David: Could you be any more predictable, choosing the Chandler terrace over your son's bedside?
Tad: Well, spare me the small talk. Is there something wrong with Jamie?
David: I wouldn't know. He took off.
Tad: Yeah. I can guess where. We'll finish this later, ok?
Krystal: You just hurry up and get to your boy.
David: Why do you keep doing this to yourself? You know the truth. Once it comes out, Tad finds out, he's not going to want anything to do with you.
Adam: A picture is worth a thousand words, J.R., or a divorce decree. Leave her here to wallow in this disaster and you and I go away right now, scot-free, hands clean. Trust me on this.
Jamie: What is wrong with you, Babe? How can you just go around busting up people's lives like that?
Babe: I never meant to hurt you or J.R. Jamie, please, you have to believe that.
Jamie: Yeah, well, you just blew us to pieces. You turned J.R. and me against each other. I mean, I put myself in jail with a lunatic to prove that he was a liar, and it was you the whole time. J.R., I am sorry. God knows it's not enough. I mean, the things I've done and said.
J.R.: Well, she played us both. But it's over now.
Adam: Maybe you two would like to rebond over this somewhere else?
Jamie: You knew for a while, didn't you? Before the wedding?
J.R.: Yeah, right after the hormones wore off.
Jamie: You could have filled me in.
J.R.: Oh, I would have loved to, but I had a priority, and that was my daughter.
Jamie: So all this time you acting like a madman was for Bess, everything you've done?
J.R.: It finally paid off for Bess and me. If I would have known about this love fest earlier, it would have been a heck of a lot easier.
Babe: You did it. All of it.
Jamie: You gave her the drug at SOS.
Bianca: And you put the birth-control pills in her juice?
J.R.: Yeah, as if I was going to spend another nine months with that. Everything you've done -- it was torture, believe me.
Jamie: I'm so sorry.
Reggie: I'm here for Jamie, just like I'm here for anybody else I care about, because once you have your friend's back, that's it. There's no questions, no discussions, no "What will Dad say?" That's it.
Erica: Jack trusts you, Reggie. That's a gift. It's an honor. So don't be angry, be grateful. Once you lose that gift, it's very hard to get it back.
Reggie: You're killing me now.
Erica: Well, that's a shame, because I really like having you around.
Reggie: All right, look, I get that, all right? I'm understanding you. But I just got -- I just got caught up with Jamie needing me, that's all.
Erica: And your sister?
Reggie: She needs me, too. I understand that.
Erica: You got a good heart, Reggie. You got a strong, adult heart. And I just want to be sure that you use that strong, adult heart along with your strong, adult sense.
Reggie: You're way too good at this.
Erica: I'm actually a little out of practice.
Reggie: I'm sorry. I've been so worried about me. How are you doing?
Erica: I'm doing great.
Reggie: Doing great?
Erica: Yes, one day at a time. Oh -- and thanks to Jack, look, I even have it engraved now.
Reggie: Is that ok?
Erica: Oh, yes. It definitely beats the alternative. Reggie, I am so sorry that you thought that I didn't care about you, because I did and I do and I always will.
Reggie: I just got caught up on the whole family thing, you know, the one I thought I was going to have with you, J, and the rest of us? It kind of hurt. It kind of hurt when I just -- I thought it just got trashed. I was wondering if maybe we could dig it out of the garbage.
Erica: I'll see what I can do.
David: J.R. is guilty of every vicious thing he denies. He can't hide it forever. And Babe will have no choice but to accept the truth. But when she does --
Krystal: A part of her will die.
David: She's also going to tell the truth to Bianca about Bess.
Krystal: You're right about that. She told me she would.
David: You never tried to talk her out of it, did you?
Krystal: This secret is too big, and so is Babe's heart.
David: Just like her mother's.
Krystal: Oh, no, no, not the same at all. Babe's heart opens up to the whole darn world. Mine cracks wide enough just to let Babe in -- and the occasional stray. I just wish there was something I could do to keep Bianca and the rest of them from turning against Babe when all this comes out.
David: I'm not at all sure that's possible.
Krystal: Yeah, like no way in Hades. All that we did -- it's all for nothing. Babe is going to lose the man that she worships, the baby that she adores, and every friend she thought she had in this town. I've heard what it sounds like when Babe's heart breaks, but I'm telling you what, this is going to be a thousand times worse.
David: Maybe she'll decide not to tell the truth about Miranda.
Krystal: Of course she'll tell. She is Babe.
J.R.: I've got it all right here -- all the proof I need of exactly who she is. I know the judge will take one look at this photo, and you'll be a nonperson and a nonparent.
Bianca: Oh, I see. So you just scored, because no way could a lesbian be a good mother, right?
J.R.: Well, I look at it this way, Bianca. We all got lucky tonight.
Bianca: God, J.R., when did you become such a bastard? And how come none of us noticed it? You would use anyone.
J.R.: I'm the jerk and you're in bed with my wife?
Bianca: You're so far gone that you've forgotten who you were. Let me just remind you, J.R. You were my friend. You stood by me and you talked to me and you supported me when I was coming out. You were the one who told me that I should be who I was, no matter what anyone else thinks. And now you would use the fact that I'm a lesbian to peg Babe as an unfit mother?
J.R.: No, that actually would be the judge's rule. I just get to support his next campaign.
Bianca: Let me tell you something, J.R. A lot of the world doesn't feel that way. When I lost Miranda, nobody cheered and said thank God that poor child was spared a life with a lesbian mother. People grieved for my daughter. They grieved for the life that she and I should have had together.
J.R.: You know what? Just have a dozen babies. I don't really care. I care about Bess, and no judge will hand over Bess to Babe now.
Jamie: Don't let him get to you, Bianca. It sucks, but J.R. has turned full-blown lost cause a long time ago.
J.R.: What? Two minutes ago you were on my side. One heartfelt "I'm a lesbian, hear me roar," and you flip sides?
Jamie: You don't get it.
J.R.: No. That you're a sucker? I had a clue.
Babe: No, J.R. What you don't get is this.
J.R.: Well, check you out. Not the dumb little piece of trash after all.
Adam: Well, I've seen enough. It's time to move on.
J.R.: You get past the syrupy voice and the ridiculous name baby doll, and you're one sneaky little bitch. And you're all a team. You're all in on it.
Jamie: I walked into the same thing you did. The difference is I knew Babe would never cheat on you.
J.R.: Oh, you mean again. You're still deluded, Jamie. You play nice, maybe I'll get you deprogrammed later.
Babe: J.R., stop it. It's me you're mad at. Leave him alone.
J.R.: Oh, sweetness, I am not mad. I'm impressed, and I bet you're all flushed with pride.
Babe: You think I like this? Yeah, sure, J.R. Every little girl dreams of growing up, meeting the man of her dreams, only to find out that he hates her like crazy. I believed in you. I believed in us even when every single person was telling me that you were lying and that you didn't love me and that you turned into him. But I saw your eyes back in San Diego -- before we got back here, before you got back in your daddy's house. But you had to come back, to prove that you were the bigger man. Look at you now, J.R. You're pitiful.
J.R.: Did you love me when you crawled into bed with Jamie? How about when you lied about the annulment? Don't talk to me about San Diego, Babe. You were married when you looked so deep into my eyes -- married. It was bad enough that you were a slut. You had to be a cheating slut.
Jamie: Shut up.
J.R.: Talk about pitiful. Hmm. You just don't get it yet. She's a carnival -- a little bit of candy, a little wild ride, you want to puke your guts out!
Babe: J.R., stop it!
J.R.: Oh. You never said stop before. It's not in your vocabulary. And I can't stop now because it feels too good. After all the times I had to tell you I loved you and hold you and kiss you, I deserve this. You know, you latched on to me in California like a leech. And if I hadn't pried you off, you would have sucked the life right out of me.
Bianca: J.R., I had no idea that you had this much hate in you. You stand there all smug and pleased with yourself. You just lost everything.
J.R.: Oh, Binks -- my buddy, my pal -- way to pull a slick one. I've been given Blondie here the credit, but I bet you had something to do with this. Way to put your girl-power brains together. And you thought you'd get me, too, but it's only going to come down to an ugly "he said, she said" in court. But I still have this, which means I still have Bess forever and ever and ever, and don't you just love the sound of that?
Tad: Jamie? I don't know what the hell this is, and I don't care. You're coming back to the hospital with me, now.
Jamie: No. It's the end. I have to be here.
J.R.: Oh, come on, Jamie, don't be so negative. It's not the end. It's just the beginning. Thank you for everything. My daughter is going to be very happy with me.
Bianca: Tad, you missed the first act, but don't worry, there's plenty more.
J.R.: Oh? It gets better?
Babe: No. Not better, but it's going to be over really soon. J.R., I know I'll miss what we could have had. But if I ever need to remember what kind of man you are, I'm going to have the worst reminder possible. Smile for my camera, J.R.
Erica: Danielle, I'm really sorry that we didn't have more time to get acquainted. I mean, I really hope that we have more of a chance when we get back home.
Danielle: Oh, that would be awesome. We'd have so much to talk about.
Reggie: Ok, we're out of here. Oh -- and I think Jack is setting the mood right now, turning the lights down low, playing the right music, so --
Erica: Night, Reggie.
Reggie: And you know what's a sure mood killer? To tell someone that their son has tried to do something really crazy. Just --
Erica: I'll keep that in mind.
Erica: Goodbye, already.
Reggie: Ok. Come on.
Danielle: I love her.
David: You know what really matters? Protecting the people you love. That's it, nothing more. Look, what do you say we ditch this mausoleum, huh?
Krystal: Oh, shame on you. After all the hard work Mary did decorating?
David: It's like an Edgar Allan Poe story. Just like the, what, "The House of Usher," I think one of these days this place is going to devour everyone in it.
Krystal: Yeah. I think it already has.
David: So, what do you say we go get a drink?
Krystal: No. You know what? I need to stay here and keep an eye on J.R.'s right-hand nanny. Something about that woman, she -- ugh. I just don't trust her, hovering over Bess like some well-dressed gargoyle. I sure am going to miss that peanut. I think I was blessed just to have known her at all.
David: Has Babe ever talked about the little boy, what he was like?
Krystal: You mean our grandson?
David: If she has, I'd like to hear it.
Danielle: You want to go back and check on Jamie, don't you?
Reggie: No. I know he's ok. I just -- I have to get back to Lily, all right? She's at home.
Danielle: You know, for the smooth player that you're supposed to be, you an ok brother and a pretty good friend.
Reggie: Oh, well, you know, I'm just trying to dazzle you with some of my best qualities.
Maggie: Oh, sorry.
Reggie: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Wait, wait, get back here. I thought you were with Jamie.
Maggie: No, he's got it under control.
Reggie: And Babe? How's she?
Maggie: Oh, she's fine. Great, actually. Can we get going, please?
Adam: More theatrics. I've seen enough.
Tad: No, you haven't.
Adam: This is nothing to do you with you, Martin.
Tad: I don't know what's on that tape, but I'd be willing to take you on to find out.
Bianca: It's ok, Tad. He can turn it into ribbons if he wanted. An exact copy was made in Slaters office.
Babe: It's 11:23 p.m. I'm Babe Carey Chandler, and this is Bianca Montgomery. This tape is being made with the help of Zach Slater, who's also acting as our witness. J.R., if you're watching this, it means -- well, I guess it can only mean a few things. But I'm praying that you're watching this to show you that it's proof that our marriage is stable. You just found me in bed with Bianca and you think that I cheated on you, and you're confused and you're hurt. And if you're upset, I know that you're innocent, and I'm so sorry. I hate that I had to put you through that pain. I hate that I had to test you, to prove that you love me as much as I love you. But if you're watching this because you finally got what you want, because you got your way to finally get rid of me and keep Bess all for yourself, you can rot in hell.
Bianca: I'm Bianca Montgomery, and I can attest that Babe Chandler and I do not have a sexual relationship. I am here simply has her friend and to help her determine whether J.R. is the victim of false accusations or if he has become the cold, cruel, calculating person that a lot of people think he has. J.R., I'm really pulling for you here. I want you and Babe to have the life and the family that I hope you deserve. I consider you my friend, and I hope I still will when this is all over.
Babe: All right.
Bianca: We're going to wait for J.R. now. The tape will just keep rolling and we'll be right here, nothing sexual. Just waiting.
Bianca: And you know the rest.
Tad: Which is probably you bashing the mother of your child. For the love of God, this has got to stop. How much more do you think you can get away with? Thank God you're not going to do any time for drugging Babe or obstruction of justice with that drug deal, but how lucky do you think you are? This vendetta you have with Babe has got to stop. It's insanity. If you don't want to be married, then end it. Get a divorce and ask for shared custody while you still can. You can still be the kind of man your mother would be proud of.
Krystal: Babe says she has a picture of him in her mind, you know? And I just wish she could just print it out, you know, and hand it to me, no matter how fuzzy or out of focus, just -- just so I could trace his little cheek and be amazed by those tiny little ears, you know?
David: Sounds like you already do that.
Krystal: Yeah, but it's just a made-up picture. I can't do him any justice, I'm sure. I just want to know him. We never got to spoil him, you know? We never got to laugh at the fact that he hates peas or that he loves salami or --
David: Well, he would get that from me.
Krystal: He's real to you, too, huh?
David: He is now.
Krystal: You know, there's a chapel down by the river that Babe is helping to restore in memory of her little boy.
David: Babe really does love with all her heart, doesn't she? We know she didn't get that from my side.
Krystal: I was thinking maybe -- maybe we could go down there, you and me, and just say a prayer. And if it felt right, maybe we could just keep going back.
David: I would like that. I want you to know that I'm going to take care of her, and you, too.
Krystal: It's going to get bad.
David: I know. But for what it's worth, you can count on me.
Krystal: I'm beginning to think I can.
J.R.: You mean nothing to me. You know, your righteousness would almost be funny if you weren't so pathetic. This coming from a man who lies to his son to protect Babe from her lies. You know, you're as dead to me as my mother. So don't tell me what's right. I know what's right. That baby's mine. I will do whatever I have to to keep her.
Babe: It's too bad it's not your call.
J.R.: Yeah, you're right. It's the judge's call. And the judges that we know-- they're not going to care about some stupid tape!
Babe: The judge will never see us. We don't even need to set foot inside a courtroom, because I can put that baby exactly where she belongs. And I'm going to do it, right now.
>> On the next "All My Children" --
Babe: Mama, what happened?
Krystal: Bess is gone.
Babe: What do you mean?
David: If J.R.'s behind this, Bess is a lot safer if he believes that she's his.
Bianca: Babe, what is it? What did your mother say --
Babe: You took her, didn't you, J.R.? Where's Bess?
