>> Previously on "All My Children" --

Chris: I mean, for some reason you're afraid that I'm going to abandon you.

Bianca: What if I told you what you really meant to me? Why do I always do this wrong?

David: Look at me, Anna. You can't deny it. You still love me.

Vanessa: If you call the police or David or anyone else, Greenlee will die.

Chris: Your home theater is going to be so state-of-the-art, Darling, you can charge admission. There's going to be a bank of seats right over here. And the screen -- it's going to come down by remote. And the screen is going to come down by remote. Erica?

Erica: I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I just -- looking at these plans for our new home, I just keep thinking about my home that I lost in the fire. I mean, it's like somebody just torched my life and left me with nothing.

Chris: You -- no, no, you weren't left with nothing. You've got Bianca --

Erica: I have you.

Chris: Absolutely.

[Phone rings]

Chris: Excuse me.

Erica: Mm-hmm.

Chris: Bureau. Stamp here. How much of a head start? Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I'm on it. Vanessa's escaped, she got out through an air duct, and nobody knows how big of a lead she's got. I'll give you a call when I get back -- now, your surround sound. Your surround sound is going to blow you away.

Erica: What are you doing?

Chris: Cutting myself a break.

Erica: But Vanessa has escaped.

Chris: You know, let someone else chase that nut job for a change. You know, I'm going to sit right here with you and we're blueprinting our future.

Erica: Chris, if you don't leave right now, we have no future.

[Pounding on door]

Anna: David! Open up!

Trey: Where did Vanessa tell you to meet her?

Leo: She said the scenic overlook by the falls, wherever the hell that is. And remember, she said to stay back. I'm going to make a call here.

Trey: Who are you calling?

Leo: Psycho mother.

[Phone rings]

Leo: Come on, come on, come on, come on! Pick up the phone!

[Phone rings]

Greenlee: Why did you drop that phone? That was probably Leo trying to find us!

Vanessa: My son's going to be along just soon enough.

Leo: You know, this place is huge. We'll cover more ground if we split up. You take the stairs.

Trey: What, the stairs? I'm sorry, Leo, but from here on out, you're on your own.

Greenlee: What the hell are we doing here, anyway?

Vanessa: Oh, two reasons. One, it's a romantic spot, perfect place for you and Leo to say your final farewells, and I do mean final.

Chris: What? You don't want me around?

Erica: You know better than that.

Chris: Well, then, why are you giving the bum's rush?

Erica: Well, you have a job to do.

Chris: Okay, well, look, I'll get somebody to cover for me. I'll call them right --

Erica: Tonight. But there will be another call. There will be dozens of calls, dozens of them. The bureau's going to want you to do a stakeout or a manhunt.

Chris: Yeah? So?

Erica: "So?" You can't not do your work, not do what you do just to make me feel secure. So, I mean, look, your line of work is dangerous, and that's a risk that I'm just going to have to learn to live with. So, you go and do what it is you have to do. Go on, Chris. Do your work. Or else --

Chris: Or else what?

Erica: Or else the fear wins, and I'm not going to let that happen. I'm stronger than that.

Chris: You're my iron butterfly. And I give you my word -- I'll be back.

Erica: Be careful.

Chris: Always. I love you.

Erica: I love you.

Erica: Oh, this is never going to work.

[Pounding on door]

Anna: David, open up! I know you're in there! Are you all right?

David: Yeah.

Anna: What's all the banging?

David: Oh, it was the damn crickets. Can't seem to get rid of them. So, to what do I owe this honor?

Anna: David --

David: Are you here to reprimand me for taking a swing at your new best friend Jackson?

Anna: No. This is not personal.

David: It's always personal with us, Anna.

Anna: Vanessa has escaped from federal custody.

David: What? How?

Anna: All we know at this point is that she is armed and she's somewhere in Pine Valley.

David: Are you kidding me? How the hell would she get her hands on a gun?

Anna: I don't know. We have an APB out on her. But Leo and Greenlee are missing, too.

David: So you think that she's kidnapped them? Is that what you're saying?

Anna: Well, Greenlee is an obvious target. Vanessa went after her the last time she escaped.

David: So you're concerned that she's going to finish the job?

Anna: I went over to the penthouse, and everything was in disarray. There'd been a struggle there or something. I don't know. It just looked bad. Who are you calling?

David: I'm calling Leo's cell phone.

Anna: I couldn't get through to it.

[Phone rings]

[Voice mail beeps]

Leo's voice: Hello, everyone. I guess this is goodbye. David, if this is you, au revoir, mon frère. We took your advice. Greenlee and I are winging our way to Paris. Sorry I missed you. I'll call you from our new digs. Later, bro.

David: It's all right.

Anna: What?

David: I know where Leo and Greenlee are. And I can guarantee you right now the last thing on their minds is Vanessa.

Leo: Come on. Come on, come on, come on. Damn it! The cell phone died.

Trey: I'll go find a pay phone.

Leo: No, I don't need you to find a pay phone, Trey! I need you to help me find Greenlee!

Trey: Well, you go on. I'll wait here for backup.

Leo: There is no backup! Vanessa said no cops, so I'm not going to take any chances while she's got Greenlee.

Trey: Yeah, well, Vanessa might freak out if she sees me!

Leo: What did I just say? Don't let her see you! Now, come on, we're wasting time! How useless are you? Go!

Trey: I have vertigo, okay? I can't handle heights.

Leo: Get over it! Greenlee's life is on the line!

Trey: Leo --

Leo: You get it in gear, Trey, or you're going to wish you were still a freaking orphan. Get up there.

Trey: I can do this. I can do this! I can. Come on.

Greenlee: You won't pull this off, Vanessa.

Vanessa: Yes, I will. And third time’s the charm.

Greenlee: Kill me and Leo will never forgive you.

Vanessa: And you should know by now that if forced to choose, Leo always chooses mama! And besides, when I get through with you, he won't have a choice. And then he will once again have the one and most important love in his life -- me!

Anna: David, I am concerned about Leo. Your mother is a deranged criminal, and she's out there somewhere --

David: I'm not worried, okay? Leo left me a voice mail message. He's perfectly safe -- unless Vanessa's stowed away on the plane.

Anna: What plane?

David: The one that's probably touching down at Charles de Gaulle airport as we speak.

Anna: He's gone to Paris already?

David: Mm-hmm. Yeah. They went to start their new life on the St. Germain du Pres. No relation that I can think of.

Anna: Are you sure about this?

David: I'm positive. They left with my blessing. Actually, it was my warning. I told them to grab their happy ending while it was still available to them.

Anna: Hmm. I pretty much told them the same thing. Okay, good. Glad nothing's happened to them.

David: So am I.

Anna: Right. I'm going to go, then.

David: Is that the only reason why you stopped by, to check on Leo and Greenlee?

Anna: Well, yes. What other reason would there be? I have to go to work, and then you can get back to yours.

David: Well, would like to see what I was working on?

Anna: I thought you were just doing a cricket dance. You know, this had better not be your latest experiment. I am a police officer. A cradle.

David: Yeah, I know, it's a little more traditional than what we're accustomed to. I plan on finishing it before the baby's born.

Anna: This is so inappropriate.

David: How is it inappropriate? I can picture you right there, Anna, rocking our baby to sleep.

Anna: David, don't.

David: I can't help it. It's my dream.

Anna: I'm not discussing this with you.

David: And who are you going to discuss it with? Jackson Montgomery?

Anna: Well, maybe I will. Yeah, because my work takes precedence over your paranoia.

David: Hmm. Is that why you came all the way up here, wasting your valuable time when a phone call would have sufficed?

Anna: Oh, that's so typical. You automatically think I am here because I -- because --

David: Because you miss me.

Anna: You think what you want.

David: You know it's true, Anna. Come on, admit it. You can protest all you want, but you came up here, the simple truth is, because you wanted to see me.

Anna: All right, fine. I did want to see you, but not for the reason that you think.

David: All right, then why?

Anna: I wanted to make sure that Vanessa hadn't gotten to you already, because no matter how much I loathe you, I don't wish you dead.

Vanessa: Sit.

Greenlee: Vanessa --

Vanessa: Yes, dear?

Greenlee: You said you had two reasons for coming here. One was for me and Leo to say goodbye.

Vanessa: Well, yes. Parting is such sweet sorrow.

Greenlee: What was the other reason?

Vanessa: Oh. Well, I suppose I can share my little surprise with you. Dead debutantes tell no tales.

Greenlee: What surprise?

Vanessa: Well, you see, I've secured Leo's future by hiding my fortune in a very safe place.

Greenlee: Leo already found your fortune -- those worthless stocks.

Vanessa: My McGuffin.

Greenlee: Your what?

Vanessa: The great film director Hitchcock -- oh, a pity I never worked with him. No, Hitch always used to throw in a red herring in his script just to, you know, throw the audience off the scent.

Greenlee: I don't get it.

Vanessa: Nobody thought you would, dear. No. You see, those bonds, those phony bonds were my McGuffin. I just planted them to throw the authorities off the track. And when Leo finds out what my real treasure is all about, he's going to know that a mother's love knows no bounds.

Greenlee: So, you're, like, some sort of pirate queen with some buried treasure here someplace?

Vanessa: Oh, come on. Riches -- riches beyond even your wild imagination, dear.

Greenlee: Yeah? Buried, like, where?

Vanessa: Well, I think that's a little bit too much curiosity for a dead cat.

Greenlee: Like I'm going to rat you out?

Vanessa: I just want to save that surprise for Leo.

Greenlee: What if Leo's not coming? What if he issued an APB instead and the cops are on their way to arrest you?

Vanessa: No, my son will be along, if only to rescue the little damsel he imagines he's in love with.

Greenlee: Leo does love me. And I love him. You are never coming between us!

Vanessa: Ooh! Really? Well, sweet old Nessa almost did, didn't she?

Greenlee: Oh, I never bought that act.

Vanessa: Well, I don't know why not. She was delightful. What? I mean, "Arsenic and Old Lace," Burbank dinner theater. Ha-ha-ha! "Dear old Aunt Abbie!"

Greenlee: It took more than bad acting to convince those specialists your dementia was real!

Vanessa: Yeah? Well, a direct deposit to an offshore bank in the Cayman Islands -- the bank -- oh, my goodness, an unnumbered account? Powerful persuasion!

Greenlee: You leach! You don't have a human bone in your body.

Vanessa: Oh, oh, oh, oh. Well, you know, it might surprise you to know that at one time I did know right from wrong and I cared. That was before I met him, of course. Then I saw with my very own eyes the depths of human depravity.

Greenlee: You mean your husband, David’s father? The original Proteus?

Vanessa: Oh! God, no! Not David’s father! He was milquetoast. No! You see, the man I'm thinking about had nothing to do with Proteus. Although, he was every bit as diabolical and evil. But then you won't believe it, you know. "Hear no evil, see no evil." That's all right. I suppose that sweet young girl's life could have been spared. I mean -- but then, suppose -- I mean, both of our lives would have had much different endings, huh?

Greenlee: What girl? Who are you talking about?

Vanessa: What? I didn't know who she was! I mean -- I was summering in the Côte d'Azur, and she just happens to be the darling of the paparazzi, you know. I mean, that sweet little goddess stole my star -- Erica Kane.

Erica: Mom, I've spent a lot of time here lately. I didn't realize how much I counted on you to help me through the bad times until you were gone. I think of all those times that I got myself into trouble and you tried to hold me and reassure me that I wasn't alone. And instead of holding on to you, I just pushed you away. I had to prove to the world that I didn't need anybody. Even though that was my darkest fear -- being left alone, because it's just how I always felt after -- well, you know -- after Daddy abandoned us. And even when he finally let me visit him in Hollywood, he still left me alone. He wasn't there when he said he'd be. He didn't come home when he said he would come home. And after that night, no matter what anyone promised me, no matter how much anyone promised me, they all wound up sooner or later doing exactly what -- what Daddy did. They all left me alone. I don't want to be left alone. I don’t. Or do I? I don't know. Is Chris right? Am I pushing him away because I want to prove that I'm right, that there's nobody I can lean on, so I might as well push them away before they get too close?

Erica: Honey.

Bianca: We finally have something in common, Mom.

Greenlee: Vanessa, what does Erica Kane have to do with anything?

Vanessa: Oh, well, see, that was the beginning of our undoing, that night, oh, yes. Of course, I had no idea I was in involved with a child molester. Oh, no. No, the rumors persisted, but I -- so anyway, I followed Richard all the way up that long drive up Mulholland to Eric Kane’s house, where his little daughter was waiting all alone! I sneaked around and I peeked in a window, and I watched my lover coming on to the birthday girl!

Greenlee: You watched Richard Fields rape Erica Kane and you didn't do anything about it?

Vanessa: Because I didn't have any idea it would go that far!

Greenlee: So you walked away?

Vanessa: What do you want me to do? What you want me to do? I was pregnant with that monster's child! I was for God's sakes still married to David’s father! And as spineless as he was, I'll tell you, he would never have accepted another man's child, oh, no.

Greenlee: So you opted out on everyone. My God, with you as a mother, it's a wonder Leo has a heart at all!

Vanessa: Leo has a heart! I may have failed with David and with Trey, but Leo's always been my triumph, my dear. You know, from the very first moment with him, I knew I had the last chance to love and be loved, and we did love each other! We had a perfect life until you interfered! Oh, but you see, I can't let you do that anymore, my dear. You cannot interfere anymore -- stop! You make one more move and you will never see Leo again!

Erica: Bianca, honey, I don't mind passing on the color of my eyes to you, you know, or my sense of humor, but I -- I don't want to pass on my fear of being left alone.

Bianca: Well, Mom, look at where we are. We're both here in a graveyard, talking to the only person that we really feel comfortable with. And Grandma isn't even here.

Erica: Honey, you can always talk to me.

Bianca: I'm not really sure you want to hear what I have to say, Mom.

Erica: Well, why don't you try me?

Bianca: Okay. I just -- I feel like I keep falling into the same trap, one, I guess, I set for myself

Erica: What trap, honey? What trap?

Bianca: Well, looking back on Sarah and Laura and Frankie, it just seems like the only people I'm attracted to can't really give me what I want.

Erica: Why do you think that is?

Bianca: I guess, like you said --because they're safe. Because if they don't really let me get close them, then I'll never get hurt, right?

Erica: You get hurt anyway.

Bianca: Yeah. Every time somebody says to me that they want me "as a friend" or that they like me, "but not that way," it's just -- it's a total dead end.

Erica: Well, Honey, there is nothing wrong with having friends.

Bianca: No, until you want something more.

Erica: Something more with Maggie? Oh, Honey, in that case, that is a dead end. Really, I think that the best thing you could ever do for yourself and for Maggie is pretend you never met.

Vanessa: Oh, Greenlee, in many ways you are lovely. Never mind. Farewell, my lovely.

[Greenlee whimpers]

Leo: No! You let her go! Let her go! Put down the gun and let her go.

Vanessa: No, Leo. If I do, we can kiss our sweet life goodbye!

Leo: The only life that want is her, Mother. Come on!

Vanessa: Why? What is so bloody special about her?

Leo: Because she loves me, that's why!

Vanessa: So do I!

Leo: Prove it! You prove it to me. Let her go. Let us both go!

Vanessa: No, Leo, I can't do that because I know she will never make you happy, not the way we are, Leo. We can have it all back, Darling. All we need now are the diamonds!

Leo: What diamonds?

Vanessa: Oh -- diamonds as flawless as my love for you. I mean, they're yours, Leo. They're your inheritance.

Leo: I don't want anything from you! I don't want anything from you! The only thing that I want is a life with her!

Vanessa: Don't forget. You forget it! Never forget!

Leo: No, I will never forget! Okay, fine, fine. Put down the gun. Put down the gun and I'll do whatever -- we'll talk this out, and just let her go.

Vanessa: All right. All right. I'll let her go. Leo, you bring me the diamonds.

Leo: No, forget it. No, I'm not going to leave you alone with her!

Greenlee: Leo, just do what she says! I'll be all right. I'll be all right. Vanessa knows if she hurts me she'll lose you. Just find those damned diamonds so we can end this.

Leo: All right, all right. Where are they?

Vanessa: They're under the footpath right under the falls. They're buried in a strongbox. And then you bring them right back to me.

Leo: And then you're going to let her go?

Vanessa: Oh, I could never deny you anything, Leo.

Leo: I love you.

Greenlee: I love you, too!

Vanessa: "I love you" -- such a sweet phrase.

David: Come on, Anna. Step out from behind your badge for once. Admit that you still care about me.

Anna: What I care about is that there's a murdering psychopath out there who could be targeting her sons.

David: I'm not worried. She's not coming after me.

Anna: You don't know that.

David: Of course I know it. She can't work her voodoo on me the way she does Leo. Now, if it was Leo, I could understand why you'd be concerned --

[Phone rings]

David: But he left town, so there's nothing to worry about.

Anna: Chief. How long ago? Yeah. Send in the swat team. Okay, I'll meet you at the site.

David: Vanessa.

Anna: Yes. She's been seen at Miller's Falls. David, she's not alone. Leo and Greenlee are with her. They didn't make the flight.

David: We got to get down there.

Bianca: I did it again.

Erica: What? Did what?

Bianca: I baited my own trap and I stepped right into it. I should have know that you are the last person in the world that I could talk to about Maggie.

Erica: And why is that?

Bianca: Well, because, Mom, you just don't get it.

Erica: Excuse me, Bianca. I get a lot more than you think I do. And just so you know, this has nothing to do, that all to do with my wanting you to be with a girl, and it has everything to do with the fact that you are in love with Maggie’s twin sister, Frankie.

Bianca: So, what, you think I'm just transferring my feelings from Frankie to Maggie?

Erica: Isn't it possible?

Bianca: Yeah. Yes, it is.

Erica: I think it must be hard for you to see Maggie for who she really is. And that's not fair to her or to you, not to even mention the unfortunate bloodlines with Vanessa.

Bianca: Oh, Mom, don't freak out or anything. Maggie and I aren't going anywhere. I'm not even sure we can still be friends.

Erica: Honey, listen to me. Just because Maggie is not the right one doesn't mean there won't be someone else. You just have to keep yourself open to new experiences and not run away.

Bianca: Like you’re running away from Chris? Like mother, like daughter, remember?

Erica: No. I want you to find the love of your life. I want you to be happy.

Bianca: All right, so you be happy, okay? Show me that it's okay to take a chance on somebody who's willing to take a chance on you.

Erica: All right. I can do that. I will do that if that will help you. I will take a chance on love and I will show you that you can be very happy if you meet the right one.

Officer: All right, let's secure the perimeter. I want all exits covered.

Anna: Hey, Moran, what have we got?

M: We got a hostage situation. Vanessa Cortlandt’s holding Greenlee Smythe at gunpoint up on the overlook.

David: What about my brother, Leo?

Ofc. Moran: du Pres?

David: Yeah.

Ofc. Moran: His car's here, but we have no sign of him.

Anna: Do we have access to the overlook?

Ofc. Moran: Yes. There is a bridge. I've got [missing] on either side of the falls, but the terrain's kind of rocky.

Anna: And the hostage negotiator -- who is it?

Ofc. Moran: Rawlins.

Anna: Rawlins, good. Okay, get him briefed before he even tries to make contact with Vanessa. She's highly unstable.

Ofc. Moran: Yes, ma'am.

Anna: Thanks. Whoa. Where do you think you’re going?

Greenlee: Vanessa, you told Leo when he got back that you'd let me go.

Vanessa: Oh! I lied.

Greenlee: You said you wanted him to have closure.

Vanessa: I'm sure I never used such a useless phrase. No, long goodbyes will just make it harder for Leo to move on. I think quick endings are best for everyone.

Leo: You touch her and you can kiss these babies goodbye.

Bianca: Well, Grandma, I hope you were watching because this is a first. Imagine me and mom sharing the same take on love. I guess we're not so different after all. Because when it comes right down to it, we both want the same thing -- somebody to love who will love us back. And maybe when that happens, like [missing] to it with all our hearts.

Erica: What's all this?

[Music plays]

Chris: For milady.

Erica: What are you doing here?

Chris: [Affected accent] I was just checking to make sure they haven't forgotten [missing].

Erica: But I don't understand.

Chris: [Normal voice] well, aren't you going to tell [missing] look?

Erica: You look incredibly spiffy.

Chris: Thank you.

Erica: But I don't understand what you're doing here. I thought that you were out manhunting Vanessa.

Chris: Yeah, well, it seems like the Feds are on ice for right now. This all falls under Chief Devane's jurisdiction, so let her go out there and play superwoman while we’re in here playing whatever strikes your fancy.

Erica: How did you know this is exactly what I need?

Chris: Because, Sweetheart, it's my job to know because I love you like it's nobody's business and I was a bum for not showing up the other night when you put the dog on for me. I think that about covers it.

Erica: Uh-uh. Not quite.

Chris: What'd I forget?

Anna: David --

David: Anna! Let go of me!

Anna: This is my jurisdiction.

David: You're going to waste time reading my rights? You're kidding me, right? Greenlee and Leo are up there, okay, at the mercy of a psychopath!

Anna: We have the situation under control. Don't you --

David: No, [missing], and that's not good enough for me, okay?

Anna: I'm not going to allow you to go up there --

David: I'm not asking you for your permission. Leo and Greenlee are the only family that I have left.

Anna: Moran?

David: Hold on, Leo. Just hold on.

Leo: We had a deal, Vanessa. I get the diamonds, you let Greenlee go.

Vanessa: No -- Leo, you're throwing away our whole future!

Leo: The hell with our future! Greenlee's the only future that I care about. Let her go! Let go!

Vanessa: No! No! Believe darling, this is for your own good you --

Leo: Let her go. Here.

Vanessa: Leo -- Leo, Greenlee is the only thing that stands between us! Don't, Leo! Leo, for the love of God, don't make me shoot you!

>> On the next "All My Children" --

Reporter: Your roommate, Trey Kenyon, is being held by Proteus.

Anna: Tell your men if they get a clean shot at Vanessa to take it.
