>> Previously on "All My Children" --

Vanessa: Mateo Santos has no idea who I am. Proteus is going to milk this for all it is worth.

Laura: I just thought after all that's happened, I could have a little of your time, but clearly, Edmund and the kids come first.

Kendall: They're going to put you away for life. She is going to get exactly what she deserves.

Hayley: Aw. Everybody tells me my son is so large for his age, but, I mean, how can I -- hello, Simone. What are you doing here? Looking for somebody's husband to steal?

Woman: Excuse me?

Hayley: This cheap whore stole my son's father away.

Simone: What did you call me?

Hayley: A cheap whore.

Simone: Oh. Nice.

Woman: I forgot, I have to be somewhere. Bye.

Hayley: Bye.

Simone: Bye. That was pleasant.

Hayley: Well, it goes with the territory. If you want to act like a --

Simone: He's missing. Mateo's in trouble.

Brooke: Well, my daughter has a heart condition, and I haven't been able to reach her since last night. Yeah, so I -- I'm checking all the local area hospitals. Would you? Yes, at the number that I gave you? Thank you very much.

Jamie: You don't have to remind me. I put out the recycling.

Brooke: Oh. I know, honey.

Jamie: Something wrong?

Brooke: Oh, I was just a little distracted. You have basketball practice tonight?

Jamie: Mom, the game -- you said you'd come.

Brooke: Oh -- oh, yeah. Yeah, I -- I will be there. I remember now.

Jamie: Edmund can come. He could bring Sam and Maddie.

Brooke: Oh, that's nice of you. I'll ask him. Here. Roast beef.

Jamie: Awesome.

Brooke: Ok.

Jamie: See you at the game.

Brooke: Okey-doke.

Jamie: Oh, hey, Edmund. Ask Mom about tonight.

Edmund: What about tonight?

Brooke: He wants you to come to his game.

Edmund: Oh. Don't sound too excited.

Brooke: Edmund, something's wrong.

Edmund: What is it?

Brooke: It's Laura.

[Loud music plays]

[Knock on door]

[Knocking]

[Knocking]

Singer: I want you Tabitha

Myrtle: I'm not deaf -- yet.

Singer: Yeah I like your style I don't want your number I want you now don't want no love games I'm gonna change your name to something pretty like baby

[Music stops]

Myrtle: Well, this won't take long.

Kendall: Because you're leaving now.

Myrtle: Like hell I am.

Kendall: What do you want from me, Myrtle? To tell me to stay away from Erica? To tell me she's like a daughter to you? I know it all and I don't want to hear it anymore, especially from you.

Myrtle: Especially from me?

Kendall: Oh, you're a pain in my --

Ryan: Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. You know who you're talking to?

Kendall: Do you have any kind of life of your own?

Ryan: Apologize to Myrtle.

Kendall: For what? I didn't invite her in here. I don't remember asking you in, either.

Ryan: Apologize.

Kendall: Or what -- you'll make me?

Opal: Thinking too hard makes your head ache.

Erica: Opal.

Opal: Here, I got you everything you asked for -- mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow, blush, lipstick, brushes, pencils, and mirrors. Who you getting all pretty for, anyway?

Erica: Myself.

Opal: Not Chris, huh? Honey, I know you're doing this to protect Bianca, but are you sure it's really going to work?

Erica: Well, with Kendall here, I don't stand a chance.

Opal: What is she going to say, anyway?

Erica: Well, how should I know?

Opal: Then why the heck did you go over there?

Erica: Opal, I don't want to talk about Kendall. Have you seen Chris?

Opal: Not since the courtroom, no. Why?

Erica: Well, I pushed him to his limit, you know?

Opal: Which limit might that be?

Erica: He's so smart.

Opal: Oh, Lord, I hope so.

Erica: I mean he's too smart. I think he's figuring out what I'm planning to do. I think that I didn't give him any credit and now --

Chris: And now what, Erica?

Opal: Well, I'll just mosey along. Take care of yourself, honey.

Erica: Ok.

Chris: You're keeping something from me.

Erica: No, I'm not, Chris.

Chris: Why did you go to the Pine Cone to see Kendall?

Erica: Well, I mean, Kendall Hart has been out of my life for years, and all of a sudden she shows up here in this town to be a witness at my trial? I mean, what am I supposed to do, stay home and give myself a facial or something? I wanted to know what she's going to say.

Chris: She's here to testify, Erica.

Erica: Yeah, well, that I know.

Chris: You know? Do you know why?

Erica: Of course not. I was trying to find out.

Chris: And?

Erica: And she hates me. I think she hates me more now than she ever did. I mean, you were there. You saw.

Chris: I saw you beg her not to betray you, which I found very interesting since you said there was nothing between you two. Now, if there is no mother-daughter tie, then what purpose does begging her serve?

Erica: I have no idea.

Chris: You are driving me out of my mind.

Erica: I'm sorry.

Chris: You're sorry? I don't want apologies, damn it. I want answers.

Erica: I am telling you everything I know.

Chris: You are telling esnd haltrhst hus ice asuc you want to know? Because I not just your way, Erica, who you're supposed to tell everything to. I am also the man you claim to love. And when you love someone, you talk to them about everything.

Erica: I'm not trying to hurt you, Chris.

Chris: No -- you're not, but you're hurting yourself, Erica. Why? Because you feel so guilty about what happened to Frankie stone that you think you have to spend the rest of your life in a place like this? You're condemning yourself to a life sentence behind bars. Why? I'm not going to let you do it. I am just not.

Myrtle: Thanks for protecting me, Ryan. But this person and I go back a long way. And she's just as I remembered her. She's exactly the way she was when she first came here and didn't have a friend in the world except me.

Kendall: Look, do you have anything else to do besides interrupt me? Either of you?

Kendall: This one.

Myrtle: Do you still have your doll? I'll bet you do. It had some pretty important papers in it, as I remember. And tell me, how is Del?

Kendall: Gee, this is a blast, both of you, but I'm expected in court and I have to get ready.

Myrtle: Let it go, Kendall.

Kendall: Let what go, Myrtle?

Myrtle: Whatever brought you here to crucify your mother.

Kendall: Did she tell you why I'm here?

Myrtle: No.

Kendall: Do you care?

Myrtle: You know how I feel about your mother.

Kendall: Erica Kane is not my mother. She didn't raise me, and she certainly didn't love me.

Myrtle: If she's not your mother, then what the hell are you doing here?

Kendall: It's a surprise.

Myrtle: Listen to me, you stupid little twit. Erica Kane is like my daughter. Now, don't you go after her. And don't you dare try to ruin her.

Kendall: Thanks for the benefit of the doubt, as always. Now, if you don't mind -- and take your bodyguard with you.

Myrtle: Don't do it. Watch your back, Ryan.

Ryan: Does anyone like you?

Simone: The alley door was open.

Hayley: He never leaves that door open.

Simone: I know.

Hayley: Well, he -- what -- I don't understand. Do you think somebody took him?

Simone: I don't know, but, Hayley, anything is possible.

Hayley: Well, where the hell were you when all this was going on?

Simone: Look, I'm not a cop. I'm a journalist, ok? I had things that I had to do.

Hayley: This whole thing stinks. It stinks to high heaven.

Simone: Look, I'm in 100% agreement with you on that. We have got to be so careful. We could still be being watched.

Hayley: Oh, God.

Simone: Hayley. Oh, damn it.

Brooke: I can't really concentrate. I've been trying to reach Laura since last night. I left at least a dozen messages on her phone and on her cell phone.

Edmund: You know, she tends to shut down when she's angry, Brooke.

Brooke: What do you mean, you think she's screening my calls?

Edmund: It's possible.

Brooke: She's got a heart condition, Edmund. She's not going to torture me, making me wonder if she's ok. Come on.

Edmund: You know -- ok. This "Tempo" business can wait, ok? Why don't we -- why don't we go to the building, see if the super has the key?

Brooke: I did that already.

Edmund: Yeah?

Brooke: She didn't come home last night.

Edmund: So maybe she stayed at a friend's.

Brooke: Yeah? Who? Greenlee or Bianca?

Edmund: I don't know. Susan?

Brooke: Susan? Susan ran out of here as soon as the wedding didn't go quite as planned. Laura obviously was not as good friends with her as she said.

Edmund: Very little about Laura is what she says it is.

Brooke: She came here wanting me to help her.

Edmund: Brooke, don't do this.

Brooke: Do what?

Edmund: Blame yourself.

Brooke: She wanted to talk to me and I told her no.

Edmund: No, what she wanted you to do was clear the room of people you love so you could dote on her. You did the right thing.

Brooke: What if something is -- what if something is wrong? What if she's hurt?

Edmund: Ok. Let me make a few phone calls, ok?

[Footsteps]

Brooke: Oh. Laura, thank God!

Laura: What'd I miss?

Brooke: I -- I've been trying to reach you all night. I was worried sick. I -- you didn't even come home at all. I called your super.

Laura: Whoa. Why'd you do that?

Edmund: Laura, your condition, you know? She was worried about you.

Laura: Well, for crying out loud, do I have to be on call for the rest of my life?

Brooke: Where were you?

Laura: I was upset, so I went for a drive. I ended up practically in Ohio. So I got tired. I spent the night in a motel. Ok?

Laura: I'm so sorry I worried you. I should have known you'd call and check up on me. You must have thought I was dead.

Brooke: Don't say that.

Laura: No, I was irresponsible. I should have known you'd worry about me. I don't know, Mom. I just -- I haven't been myself. But after everything you've been through and losing your daughter, the first Laura. But nothing's going to happen to me, ok? I'm not going anywhere.

Brooke: Ok. Okey-doke. Enough of this. You must be starving.

Laura: Hmm. You know I am.

Brooke: Ok. Come on. I'm going to make you something to eat. It'll just take a minute. I'll be right back.

Laura: So, you guys working together?

Edmund: Yeah, that's the plan.

Laura: Nice of you to look after my mom.

Edmund: I care about her.

Laura: Uh-huh. Spent the night?

Edmund: Laura, your mom's a very optimistic person. But after losing a child, you know, there are certain emotional triggers that are really easy to pull. You know what I mean?

Laura: Edmund, I lost my real mother in a fire. I know what it's like to lose someone suddenly.

Edmund: So do I. What I'm saying is it would be really a great thing if you could just sort of be aware of how much you mean to your mother.

Laura: Well, thank you for that input. I'm sure you guys have a lot of work to do, so --

Edmund: Laura, am I being dismissed?

Laura: I didn't say that.

Edmund: You don't like me very much anymore, do you? Well, I do have to get back to work. And now that I know that you're ok, I don't have to worry about your mom anymore today. I do have one question for you, though.

Laura: What's that?

Edmund: Do you ever think, even for a minute, about your mother being happy?

Ryan: You know, I've known Myrtle for a bunch of years, and I have never known that woman to say a cross word to anyone. And then came you.

Kendall: Look, six-pack, I was getting dressed and minding my own business when that gossipy old thing came knocking are to harass me. Go away.

Ryan: Oh, poor Kendall -- can't take the heat, huh?

Kendall: I haven't done anything wrong.

Ryan: You jumped all over Myrtle.

Kendall: She jumped all over me. Look, you don't even know me. You have no idea who Myrtle was or is to me, what we were talking about, or what --

Ryan: You know what I do know?

Kendall: I'm sure you're going to tell me.

Ryan: I know a classic bitch from hell when I see one. Yeah, and I -- I see one right now.

Myrtle: Oh, Erica.

Erica: Oh, Myrtle. I -- oh, may I?

Myrtle: Listen. Listen, darling, I saw her.

Erica: Kendall?

Myrtle: Yeah. Now, I couldn't get a word out of her about what she is going to say on that stand.

Erica: Oh, Myrtle. Thank you so much for even trying. Well, was she as disagreeable as ever?

Myrtle: Worse, worse. All she wants to do is --

Erica: Is bury me?

Myrtle: Right. I mean, it's amazing. After all these years, she doesn't understand how lucky she is. She had good parents who chose her and brought her up with love, and all she can think about is -- is --

Erica: Paying me back.

Myrtle: Right. Oh.

Chris: Hi, Myrtle.

Myrtle: Hi, Chris. Take care of our girl.

Chris: Yeah.

Myrtle: I'll see you inside, darling.

Erica: Ok.

Chris: Sorry. Lost my temper.

Erica: I'm just so glad you came back.

Chris: Yeah, well, you know I'm not going to let you down. No, you -- you make it so dang hard to love you.

Chris: Ok. Let's all get ready for today, huh?

Erica: Ok.

Simone: What the hell, Hayley?

Hayley: Chris Stamp just went in there.

Simone: Yeah? And?

Hayley: And we all think he's Proteus. And Mateo is missing, and I am going to find out exactly what the hell he has done to my husband.

Brooke: I just came in to see if you were hungry enough for waffles.

Laura: Actually, I'm not hungry after all. I think I just want to go home and get in I'll eat later, ok?

Brooke: Honey, you don't have to go.

Laura: Well, I'm intruding, apparently, so, yeah, I do.

Brooke: What happened in here?

Edmund: I'll let you two talk, ok?

Brooke: No, I -- I want you here for this.

Laura: For what, Mom?

Brooke: For what I want to say to you.

Laura: I drove 500 miles last night. I don't think I really have it in me for a lecture.

Brooke: Well, what makes you think it's going to be a lecture?

Laura: Your boyfriend hates me, Mom.

Edmund: Oh, come on, Laura.

Laura: He wants you to hate me, too.

Brooke: That is so unfair.

Laura: You hear yourself? You're already taking his side.

Brooke: Laura? Laura, stop this! Now, I don't know what went on when I was in the kitchen making coffee, but I heard what Edmund asked you before. Do you want me to be happy or not?

Kendall: You don't know anything about me, you son of a --

Ryan: I know everything about you, all right, Kendall? You're a legend. Yes, I did all my research because I know you're going to cause trouble for just about everybody that I care for in this town.

Kendall: I'm not going to hassle Myrtle, ok?

Ryan: And I know that victim thing that you play like a violin.

Kendall: Oh, really?

Ryan: Really. Erica Kane was raped when she was a teenager. She gives her child up for adoption that she conceived. Child comes back to make Mom pay for being so thoughtless to actually try and give this kid a shot at a real life.

Kendall: What is your problem?

Ryan: From what I heard, you had two great parents that adored you.

Kendall: I did.

Ryan: So what are you doing here now? What do you want from Erica?

Kendall: What do you want from me? Man, I forgot how freaking nosy everyone in this town is.

Ryan: Tell me something -- why are you such a spoiled brat?

Kendall: Why are you even talking to me?

Ryan: Because you're invading my space!

Kendall: Then stay in your own damn room.

Ryan: Well, then you stay out of my way.

Kendall: Duh! Whose room are we standing in? Mine.

Ryan: What do you want from Erica? What, is somebody paying you off or something? Is that it?

Kendall: Hey, go away.

Ryan: Or is this a vendetta for the whole abandonment issue?

Kendall: Go away!

Ryan: Listen, I hope you have a lot of fun in court today on the stand, ok? And I really hope it's worth it.

Kendall: Drop dead.

Erica: Chris?

Chris: Hmm?

Erica: What would happen if Kendall just didn't show up?

Chris: Is there a chance of that?

Erica: Well, I mean, with -- with Kendall, there's always a chance of that, but, I mean, what would happen?

Chris: Well, then the -- the jury would get the case just on the evidence they heard.

Erica: Well, I -- I told them that I killed Frankie in self-defense.

Chris: Mm-hmm. Yeah, but I've been watching them. They want to believe you.

Erica: Do you think they do?

Chris: I don't know. Let's just hope that Jackson's star witness doesn't say something up there that's going to turn this thing upside down -- again.

Erica: Like what?

Chris: I don't know, Erica. Look, aside from the fact that your daughter hates you, what can she say on the stand that Jackson thinks is so important a jury needs to hear? What?

Hayley: Let -- let go of me right now.

Simone: You have got to calm down.

Hayley: Don't you tell me what to do.

Simone: Hayley, if Chris Stamp is Proteus and you walk in there and let him know that you know it, and you blow your cover, and Mateo doesn't even stand a chance.

Hayley: For all I know, Mateo is -- Mr. Stamp! I need to speak with you right now.

Proteus: Mateo? Oh, Mateo? Wake up. Don't worry. This isn't hell. Not yet.

Mateo: Where am I?

Proteus: I trusted you.

Mateo: Ok, wait.

Proteus: I made you one of my own.

Mateo: Ok, just chill out, all right?

Proteus: Is this how you repay loyalty?

Mateo: I -- I can explain.

Proteus: Explain how you stole from me.

Mateo: It's not the way it looks. Just let me explain --

Proteus: Shut up. You can't justify this kind of betrayal.

Mateo: All right. What do you want to do?

Proteus: Do you think there's a choice, Mateo, for me? Your usefulness has expired, Mateo.

Mateo: What are you saying?

Proteus: Well, you know what I'm saying. You must die.

Laura: What do you mean? Of course, I want you to be happy. You've given me everything. You gave me life. I mean, I -- I know I'm not -- it's not like I'm Jamie, but --

Brooke: Do you think I love you less, because I adopted you?

Laura: I don't know.

Brooke: Oh, Laura, why? God, don't you get how much I love you?

Laura: I get that you see a pathetic loser kid who gets her lunch out of a garbage can.

Brooke: It's not what I see.

Laura: It's what everyone sees.

Brooke: It's what you see. And I will give anything to make that go away, what happened before.

Laura: That's not your job.

Brooke: I don't think of it as my job. I love you. I love you and I -- I want you to see yourself the way I see you. You are talented, you're strong, you're a survivor.

Laura: That's a crock, just like you say how proud you are of me.

Brooke: Why? I am proud of you. I'm proud of you because you -- you know, because you've survived. I mean, and -- and Phoebe -- don't you know she adores you, too? And Jamie? Honey, don't you -- don't you feel that?

Laura: I'm not a kid, Mom.

Brooke: I know that.

Laura: So I guess we don't need each other anymore. You're all set. Of course, I want you to be happy. Ok?

Brooke: You're not leaving until I am finished with you.

Chris: Erica's trial is about to start again, and I have to make this phone call.

Hayley: This is very important.

Simone: Look, Chris, she thinks you can help get Mateo back.

Hayley: Shut up, Simone.

Simone: Look, she actually thinks you have pull with him because you used to work at the club. That's how well she knows her husband. She doesn't even know who his real friends are.

Chris: Well, ladies, this sounds like it has nothing to do with me and I do have to make a phone call, so please, excuse me. Sorry.

Simone: Sorry. I'm begging you, drop this. Ok? If he was Proteus, why the hell would he be here helping Erica Kane's bony behind?

Simone: I -- I know you're worried. I am, too. That's why I came to you. But why lower Mateo's chances by trashing our cover before we know where he is or what's going on?

Hayley: We know he's missing. Isn't that enough? What are we going to do? Tell me. Tell me, what are we going to do?

Simone: I'll go to SOS and see if he came back. Ok? Just stay cool, all right? Try to relax. I'll -- I will call you. And stay away from Chris Stamp, ok? He's not Proteus. I just feel it.

Mateo: All right. Look, you -- you don't want to kill me.

Proteus: You have no idea what I want.

Mateo: I'm telling you I can be trusted.

Proteus: I don't put my trust in thieves.

Mateo: Ok, fine. Just test me. Ok? I'll do whatever you want. I'll prove to you that you can call on me again. Come on, you're smart. Come up with something. Just let me try.

Proteus: Are you serious?

Mateo: Dead serious.

Proteus: All right. Maybe there is a way.

Judge: Mr. Montgomery, call your first witness.

Jack: The people call Kendall Hart to the stand.

Brooke: I'm not going to choose between you and Edmund, and you know why? Because there shouldn't have to be a choice, Laura.

Laura: I didn't ask you to choose, Mom.

Brooke: You're not listening. You haven't listened to anyone except that little tiny voice, that insecure voice in you that keeps telling you that the world is out to get you.

Laura: I thought I wasn't going to get a lecture today.

Brooke: I thought you were smarter than this, honey. I -- I, better than anybody, know the hell that you've gone through. All right? And when I say I am proud of you, I mean that from the core of my soul because you did it. You pulled through. You survived. And yet you still want to undo everything that you have -- all your natural gifts, all your beauty, and I am sick of it.

Laura: Wait a minute.

Brooke: You have to listen, all right? You used to know how.

Laura: Ok, I'm listening.

Brooke: You came in here last night with all these demands, and you didn't even realize what you were trying to undo.

Laura: Which was --

Brooke: Your family. Me and -- and your Aunt Phoebe and Jamie and -- and Edmund, too. I mean, you know, you came in here, you were in the middle of a room full of people who love you, and you don't realize it because you think that -- because you don't think that you're worthy of that kind of love.

Laura: How shrinky.

Brooke: You stop, ok, because I'm your mother. And I love you. But you can't ask me to just have that and nothing else, ok? You are my priority. But you might not always come first, and I need you -- I need you to get that in your head and understand that. Can you do that? Because I'm worried about you, honey, because you're on a dark and lonely path, and it's solely of your own choosing. And it makes me feel very sad for you.

Laura: That's great. Can I go now?

Brooke: No.

Laura: Don't you think I'm a little old to be sent to my room?

Edmund: Laura, listen to what your mom is saying.

Laura: I hear her loud and clear. But I would rather die than talk about any of this in front of you. How about that, Edmund?

Mateo: Ok. Because, you know, I'll -- I'll do whatever you want. I'll do whatever you need me to do to prove myself to you, ok? I'll make it up to you.

Proteus: I've heard that before. Then you stole from me.

Mateo: Yeah, um -- well, that's because I'm an idiot. But I'm -- I'm not unredeemable, and I know if I don't pass a test, I know what the price is, ok? Just give me another chance.

Proteus: All right.

Mateo: Ok. Thank God.

Proteus: How far would you go to prove your loyalty to me above all else?

Mateo: I'll do anything you want.

Proteus: Careful what you promise me, Mateo.

Mateo: I'll do anything you ask me to to prove my loyalty.

Proteus: To save your own life, then, will you take another's? Yes or no? You have five seconds.

Vanessa: Kill or be killed, Mateo. It's that simple.

Proteus: The choice is entirely up to you. Two seconds.

Mateo: I'll do it.

Vanessa: A wise decision. I'll be in touch.

Hayley: Just tell him that it's Hayley Santos and it is a matter of life and death. No, it is not a medical emergency. Just give him the message. Isn't that what you're paid for?

Vanessa: You poor darling. Is everything all right?

Hayley: Yeah, I -- it's just really been a bad day.

Vanessa: Yes, I know. I -- I heard, darling. I'm so sorry.

Jack: So, Ms. Hart, would you please tell this court what your mother said during the cou this telephone conversation?

Kendall: Well, I was shocked because we don't talk anymore. So out of the blue, Erica calls me and tells me she has no one else to turn to and that she was counting on me to help her just because I am her daughter.

Jack: To help her what, exactly?

Kendall: She asked me if I could help her set up a slush fund.

[Gallery murmurs]

Jack: What else did she ask you to do, if anything?

Kendall: She also wanted to know if I could help her get a fake passport?

[Gallery murmurs]

Jack: And was there anything else that your mother required?

Kendall: Yes. She wanted to know if I could use some of that money to get a private jet.

Jack: Did she indicate what use she could possibly have for a private jet?

Kendall: For an escape if the verdict came back guilty.

[Gallery murmurs]

[Alarm clock blares]

[Alarm stops]

Jack: Ms. Hart, after Ms. Kane asked you to help her flee the country should she be convicted, did she confide in you as to why she was on trial in the first place?

Chris: Objection, Your Honor.

Judge: Overruled.

Jack: What did your mother say about Frankie Stone?

Kendall: She said she went to Frankie's room that night to end it for good.

Jack: To end what?

Kendall: Erica hated Frankie. She hated that my sister was in love with Frankie.

Jack: And? And what else did your mother say with regard to her feelings toward Frankie Stone?

Kendall: She said she wanted Frankie dead.

[Gallery murmurs]

>> On the next "All My Children" --

Laura: If we're going to move on, we need to settle things. Just come to my mom's place.

Hayley: I'm going to take the condo and everything. You can kiss your assets good-bye.

Chris: So it wasn't self-defense? Get her out of here.
