Mad About You News
"Mad About You" News from the past!
1998 season news: LOS
ANGELES (AP) -- "Mad About You," which has slumped in the ratings this season,
will be bumped to a new time slot in a NBC schedule overhaul that favors the freshman
comedy "Will & Grace." NBC had pinned its hopes -- and millions of dollars -- on the ability of "Mad About You" to help
the network weather its first year sans "Seinfeld." But the Helen Hunt-Paul
Reiser comedy has played third fiddle to Tuesday competitors "JAG" on CBS and
ABC's "Home Improvement." Also shifting to new time slots are "Caroline in
the City," "NewsRadio" and the freshman sitcoms "Conrad Bloom"
and "Encore! Encore!" NBC
Entertainment President Scott Sassa, making his first major scheduling changes after five weeks on the job,
said the revamped schedule provides "a very solid mix of successful, established
series" and newer shows. Last season's No. 1 network has looked less like a winner
this year. Besides the weakness of "Mad About You," NBC also has failed to
capture viewers with new series such as "Trinity" and the now-canceled
"Wind on Water." The inability of "Mad About You" to hold up its end
must be particularly painful for the network: According to reports, NBC had to fork over
at least $1 million per episode each for Reiser and Ms. Hunt to entice them back for a
seventh season. The critically praised "Will & Grace," a comedy about
a gay man and straight woman who are best friends and roommates, has been a bright spot
for the network. Here is the new NBC schedule for Monday and Tuesday, beginning Dec. 14
(all times EST): MONDAY: "Suddenly Susan," 8 p.m.; "Caroline in the
City," 8:30 p.m.; "Mad About You," 9 p.m.; "Conrad Bloom," 9:30
p.m.; "Dateline NBC," 10 p.m. TUESDAY: "3rd Rock From the Sun," 8
p.m.; "NewsRadio," 8:30 p.m.; "Just Shoot Me," 9 p.m.; "Will
& Grace," 9:30 p.m.; "Dateline NBC," 10 p.m. Repeats of "3rd Rock
From the Sun" will air in the sitcom's current time slot, 9 p.m. Wednesday, while
"Encore! Encore!" will move from Tuesday to fill the 9:30 p.m. Wednesday slot
being vacated by "NewsRadio." Those changes begin Dec. 16.
Helen Wins Again!
From Reuters: Life got even better for Helen Hunt,
who won best actress honors for her role as Jamie Buchman on NBC's "Mad About
You," six months after winning an Oscar for "As Good As it Gets."
Hunt added her third consecutive Emmy to add to her crowded trophy case. In March, she
won best actress at the Academy Awards for her film role opposite Jack Nicholson.
"I'm the president of `I was not expecting this,"' she said.
Lisa Kudrow... won best supporting actress in a comedy series" (for her role in
"Friends"). Mel Brooks also won again for his guest starring role in MAY.
Hunt, Sedgwick in Twelfth Night
NEW YORK (Variety) - The Lincoln Center run of Shakespeare's "Twelfth
Night" received a boost when star Helen Hunt won an Academy Award for acting. Now the
play has received another bit of luster with the announcement that "Singles"
star Kyra Sedgwick has agreed to play Olivia alongside Hunt's Viola and Paul Rudd's
Orsino. Hunt just turned away numerous movie offers to commit to a July 16-Aug. 30 run at
the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. The star of "As Good As It Gets" will return to
"Mad About You" and film a movie in January.
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- "Mad About You" isn't at sea about its season finale:
"Titanic" director James Cameron will make an appearance, as himself.
Ellen DeGeneres also will appear in the episode, playing a potential nanny for Paul and
Jamie Buchman -- series stars Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt. The"Mad About You"
season finale is to air May 19 on NBC. The turnabout is fair play for Hunt, who will
appear in the May 13 season
finale of DeGeneres' sitcom, "Ellen." DeGeneres, whose ABC comedy faces
an uncertain future, may appear in more "Mad" episodes next season, executive
producer Vic Levin said.
And the Oscar Goes to...Helen Hunt!!! For "As Good As It
Gets"! Congratulations!!! Helen Hunt also just re-signed with the
show, yay!
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Mad About You, the NBC sitcom starring Paul Reiser
and Oscar nominee Helen Hunt, was renewed Monday for a seventh season.
Neither the network nor Reiser's publicist would divulge what Miss Hunt and Reiser would
earn per episode next season. Media Week reported earlier this month that it would cost $1
million-plus to woo Reiser, and about $1 million to get Miss Hunt. But Miss Hunt's
worth may have risen since her nomination for best actress for her role opposite Jack
Nicholson in "As Good As It Gets." And Reiser has a contract guarantee that his salary will match Miss Hunt's.
"We can't comment on any details regarding finances or contracts. It's just our
policy never to comment," said Curt King, NBC director of prime
time series. Talks stalled last week with the
network's top offer at $750,000 per episode. But everything was wedded bliss Monday
for TV's popular young marrieds. "We're thrilled to have `Mad About You'
back," King said. "Paul and Helen will both be back along with all the creative
forces involved." "The good news is that they're both returning. It's
wonderful," said Reiser's publicist, Annett Wolf. A message left for Hunt's publicist
wasn't returned. The series was crucial for NBC, which lost its top-rated comedy,
"Seinfeld."
At the 1997 Emmy Awards, Mad About You cast members Helen Hunt won OUTSTANDING LEAD
ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIES, Carol Burnett won for OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTRESS IN A COMEDY
SERIES, and Mel Brooks won for OUTSTANDING GUEST ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES!
From Mr. Media's column: "LUKEWARM ABOUT
YOU. Comedian Paul Reiser's first book, Couplehood, earned decent reviews and sales so it
was only natural that when he and his wife, Paula, had a child, he'd write a sequel.
Herewith, the star of NBC's "Mad About You" - wherein his TV wife is also with
child - explains the difference between traditional what-to-expect books and his own
BABYHOOD (Weisbach/Morrow):
* "Those 'know-it-all' books tell you how to have a happy, healthy pregnancy.
My book mentions a squirrel."
* "Those books tell you how to care for a new born child. My book describes how
tired I am."
* "Those books give you essential information you can use in a life-threatening
emergency. My book has some very amusing anecdotes about poop."

"Mad About You" now has its own companion album from Atlantic Records!

McLachlan, and The Rascals.
