Buffy the Vampire Slayer Episode Guide

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 6, Episode 3: "After Life", Original air date: 10/1/01

We don't know who wrote this. It will be replaced later.

The scooby gang make their way to the Summer's residence, worried that something has gone wrong with the ritual, and that it might end in her being "broken", never being herself again.

Dawn has taken Buffy home.

Inside of the house, Buffy is commenting on small things, while Dawn cleans her up, trying to bandage her hands, which are bleeding (from digging out of her grave in Bargaining). When Spike rushes into the house, he doesn't seem to notice that the real Buffy is walking down the stairs, dismissing her as the robot. Until he realizes the truth. Spike helps Buffy fix her hands, and she looks at him in wonder, and asks how long she has been gone. He immediately replies 147, and how he has been counting the days. As he asks her how long she's been gone, she replies, "Longer".

As the gang begin to arrive, Spike exits very fast, not really wanting to deal with the scoobies! They begin to throw questions at Buffy, as Dawn slowly begins to realise who brought her back. She tells everyone to stop bothering Buffy, and takes her up to bed. Xander and Anya discover Spike outside, when they leave. They notice he's been crying, upset that he wasn't informed about the spell. He knows that he wasn't informed, because Willow knew he wouldn't let them! That she might come back all weird, and have to be killed again. Xander thinks Spike is just elated, and he throws Xander against a tree, and shows no sign of a headache.

Willow calls Giles, who is freaked out, so much, that she can hear him cleaning his glasses on other end of the line. He promises to arrange to get back as soon as he can. Willow also shows concern, especially since Buffy isn't that happy about being alive.

As Buffy stares at pictures of her friends, they all turn into weird look things. She shakes her head, and it disappears. She doesn't think anymore about it. Later that night, Tara and Willow are awoken by Buffy standing at the foot of the bed screaming obscene things and throwing objects at the wall behind her bed. Willow turns around to turn the light on, and she is gone. As a matter of fact, Buffy is actually fast asleep in bed. The walls shakes a bit and a shadowy figure moves away, underneath the floor.

At Xander's, he receives a call from Willow, when all of the sudden, Anya starts to cut her face, and laughing (cackling), then faints. The next morning, the scoobies are brainstorming, and Anya suddenly suggests that some sort of demon may have been brought back, with Buffy. Buffy walks out and informs them about the pictures, so they rush of to the magic shop for research. They come up with useless ideas.

A very distracted Buffy, goes on patrol.

Back at the Summers residence, Dawn becomes possessed, say's some of the stuff "Buffy" said before, breathes some fire then goes back to her normal self. At Spikes crypt, he is chucking a big hissy fit (nervous breakdown...either way), when Buffy enters. He tells her that he never forgot the promise he made to her, and dreamt every single night, that he had saved Dawn and prevented Buffy's death.

Back at the Magick Shop, Xander asks Tara, if Willow knew about the possibility of a demon coming back with Buffy, but Tara denies it.

Willow discovers that the demon wasn't exactly brought back with Buffy, it was actually created by the spell, playing  a sort of price, to be paid for bring Buffy back from the afterlife. To survive it has to be manifest someone else's appearance or possess them, and it can't be killed without actually undoing the spell. Dawn completely refuses to do so. Willow also discovers that the demon will soon dissipate, unless it kills the person involved in the spell (Buffy).

Buffy returns home, and is attacked by a big, misty monster (which means Willow was wrong about needing to borrow someone else's form).

Anya, Dawn and Xander rush to the house, while the two witches perform a spell, to give the demon form, so Buffy can fight it, and Willow ends up fully taking over the spell. The spell works, and Buffy kills it.

The next day, Buffy is making Dawn, lunch for school, "It was bad when you were gone," Dawn tells her.  "But it'll be better now, now that they can see you being happy.  It's all they want". Buffy contemplates this, then she goes to the Magick Shop.

She "confirms" that she was in hell, and how she is very glad she brought her back. Willow and Xander give her a large, tearful hug.

Buffy decides to go home, and exits the shop, to find Spike, in the shadows. He offers her help, in anyway he can, reminding her, that he knows alot about torment and stuff like that.

"I was happy", Buffy outlets quickly, surprising Spike, "Wherever I was, I was happy. At peace! I knew that everyone I cared about was right. I knew it. Time didn't mean anything. Nothing had form, but I was still me, you know? And I was warm, and I was loved, and I was finished. Complete. I don't understand theology or dimensions or any of it, really, but I think I was in heaven.  And now I'm not.  I was torn out of there, pulled out by my friends.  Everything here is hard and bright and violent.  Everything I feel, everything I touch....This is hell.  Just getting through the next moment, and the one after that, knowing what I've lost".

She gets up, leaving Spike, watching her silently, as she turns back to him, "They can never know. Never". She walks away.
