Angel Episode Guide

Season Five; Episode 15: "A Hole in the World" By Cathy

(This is a short recap; we hope to have a longer, more detailed summary later)

Aired February 25, 2004

We flashback to a young Fred preparing to leave her home in Texas for Hell A. She's going to go to UCLA. Her parents are nervous but she assures them that she's just going there to study. Her dad swears that if she meets any angels he'll eat the dog. Fred promises them she'll be dull, even boring.

In the present Fred with a flame-thrower and Wesley with a gun are taking out a nest of mystic bug creatures. They find it romantic being by a roaring fire and a snug little nest, they kiss.

Spike saves Angel’s life by stabbing him. The sword went through Angel torso and killed a bug on his back. Fred asks for the specimen to take back to the lab to study.

Meanwhile, a special delivery comes to the lab for Fred in the middle of the night. Knox asked if it was sent to the right place, ancient relics are two floors down. Plus does it need a signature? No it’s signed.

At the office, Gunn is singing show tunes but breaks into gansta rap when he spies Wesley at his door. Gunn does an ‘ex-boyfriend revenge’ when he teases Wesley into thinking he and Fred had a night together. Wesley asks Gunn if he is okay with the new relationship? Ya it’s cool, he knows how he feels about her but if he ever hurts her he will kill him like a chicken. Gunn breaks the news that he has located Lindsey McDonald and knows where he is living.

Spike and Angel are fighting; it’s sounds pretty serious. What’s the problem? If cavemen and astronaut got into a fight who would win? They’ve been yelling at each other for 14 minutes about it. Do the astronauts have weapons? No.

In the lab Fred and Knox discuss her and Wes being together which he’s totally good about he just doesn’t want her to feel uncomfortable, he loves working with her. Knox leaves the room to get a ‘HASMAT’ team and to find out where the coffin came from. Fred inspects the ancient mystery sarcophagus coffin that was sent to her anonymously. She pushes a purple button and breathes in some gas or mummy’s dust.

Spikes been called into Angels office which he’s not too happy about. He was downstairs playing poker with the crew from accounts receivable and it was quite promising. And by the way all the guys agree astronauts don’t stand a chance against cavemen so don’t even start. Angel is tired of the constant bickering and competition between he and Spike. He wants to get rid of Spike once and for all. Spike accuses Angel that he can’t stand the competition plus Spike’s got nowhere else to go. Angel offers to send him to one of Wolfram & Hart's satellite offices…preferably Outer Mongolia. He’ll have cars, gadgets and an expense account. Spike seems okay with that idea.

Fred seems to be fine but when she and Wesley are discussing dinner plans she coughs up blood and collapses.

In the hospital room the boys gather around Fred. She asks what is wrong with her. They say she’s just sick and they promise her that they are isolating the sarcophagus and should have the answer for her in a couple of hours. Outside Fred's room the truth comes out and it's bad. The power is mystical. A parasitic agent is working through her. Fred's organs are cooking and in a day's time they will liquefy. The team decides to start with whomever sent the package to Fred. They split up to find out.

Wesley is searching through one of his mystical books when one of the employees comes into his office complaining that not everyone needs to be working on Fred’s case. Surprisingly Wesley takes out a gun and shoots him in the knee. He also wants anyone else not working Miss Burkle’s case sent to him.

Gunn goes to the white room looking for answers and gets hit by a reflection of his self. His own image is the new conduit to the Senior Partners. The conduit is pretty annoyed with Gunn's because he is failing; the senior partners are not there for his convenience. Gunn says he’s there for someone else and he's willing to make a deal for Fred, his life. The conduit tells him deals are for the devil and that he already owns his life.

Angel, Spike and Lorne head to Lindsey’s but discover Eve - she's desperate, jobless, and in hiding. She and Lindsey had nothing to do with Fred's current condition, and oh ya have they seen Lindsey? Lorne gives her an old right hook and then he threatens her to sing to prove she isn’t lying, which she isn’t but her future ain’t so bright. But wait the girl does know a thing or two about Wolfram & Hart and she advises them to look into the text that is forgotten. They need to find a deeper well.

Wesley takes Eve's advice and looks into the really, really ancient text. He finds out that she is infected with an ancient parasitic demon called Illyria murdered by rivals and left to wander in the ‘deeper well’ (A prison for the dead). Fred's skin is hollowing out, Illyria wants to use Fred’s body to return and the men know she could die. Their time is limited and they need to get to the ‘deeper well’ immediately to draw the demon back to the source. Unfortunately it's located in England but fortunately W&H have really good jets Angel and Spike can get there in a mere four hours.

Fred crawls out of bed and heads to the lab. She's not the damsel in distress, she’s lived in a cave for 5 years no monster flu is going to keep her down but she is scared. She's more likely than most to find whatever is trying to kill her. Wes promises her he won’t stop and tells her she needs to rest. She knows how bad it is and she asks him to take her home and he does.

It is revealed that Spike has never flown before and Angel has only been in a helicopter. They are going back to the mother country. Maybe after they save Fred they should take in show, Angel has never seen Les Mis. Spike puts a damper on it saying half way through the first act Angel will be drinking humans again. They can’t lose Fred, they won’t. They’ve already lost Cordy.

Fred finally gets Wes up to her room and all he wants to do is read, she teases him. He tells her what Spike and Angel are doing to help. Fred says she needs her stuffed animal to help her but she can’t remember why. She’s worried about how awful she must look but he tells her she is beautiful. She asks him to read to her.

Knox suggests they freeze Fred. They'd at least be able to stop the spread in its tracks. As Gunn and Knox toss around ideas in the lab they realize that the virus is impervious to the cold. Knox reveals that he wishes he could be the white knight in the situation. He doesn't just love Fred he worships it. What? IT? Gunn realizes that Knox is behind the entire thing. Knox spills that this plan was set into motion millions of years ago and there is no way to stop it. He says that Angel and Spike are on the right track but they won't save her. Angel could save her but he'll let her die.

Once in England Spike and Angel find the deeper well. Warriors bust out to protect it but the vampires are in a fighting mood reminiscent of past days. Once the warriors are taken care of the keeper of the well emerges. His name is Drogan and he and Angel have met before. Drogan knows Angel and Spike are there about the demon Illyria. But don't ask him a question Drogan can't lie. Drogan does tell Angel and Spike that Illyria was laid to rest millions of years ago at the bottom of the deep well. She was both feared and beloved when alive and Drogan supposes that the disappearance of the sarcophagus was predestined to return even back when Illyria was first buried. It was there with him until a month ago and he hadn't noticed it disappeared. He is the keeper of billions of coffins. Drogan thinks that Illyria, even millions of years after her death, still must have acolytes around the world.

As it turns out, Knox is one of the acolytes. Not only did he set the wheels in motion but also when it got caught up in customs Gunn unwittingly signed the release form in order to get him another brain boost. Gunn angered with guilt goes to kill Knox but stops himself.

Drogan tells Angel that to rid the spell of Illyria it requires a champion to release it. They’ve got two. Unfortunately if they release Illyria from Fred it will save her but it will crawl into the soul of tens of thousands of innocents who will die in agony. Angel says ‘to hell with the world’.

Fred gets worse. She fights it but she knows that it is bigger then anything. She doesn’t want Wes to leave her. She says she walks with heroes and he says she is one. She begs not to be taken. She wants a kiss from Wesley and they do. She wants to know if he would have loved her. He tells her he loved her since he’s known her and maybe before. As she dies she asks Wesley to tell her parents it was quick and that she wasn't scared. Suddenly Fred is silent but her eyes change colour. She flip-flops on to the floor next to her bed and suddenly she pops up to her feet. Her hair is blue, clearly now Illyria who seems pleased with her new body.

“You saying we should start annoying other people?” Spike.

“It’s my boys. I haven’t had this many big strapping men at my bedside since that night with the varsity lacrosse team. That was a joke.” Fred.
