 Without Motive

  Review by Suzanne 11/4/11

This is a really great British miniseries. It's very long, but I still really loved it. The acting is great, the story twists and turns, and it has everything: romance, humor, drama, etc.

The story is about a serial killer in England and how the police go about hunting him down. It has a lot of politics and intrigue as well as the usual violence and police drama. The main character is Jack Mowbry, one of the investigators, but there are many characters, and all are very well-drawn. Watching this was kind of like living with these people for a while.

If you have trouble with British slang or accents, you might want to watch it with the closed-captioning on. That always helps me. You can figure most of it out with the context of the story.

It does not come with any features or extras, which is too bad. Maybe they figured that 600 minutes was enough to put in the set!

This would make a good gift for fans of any drama. I love it. I looked up the actor who plays Jack, Ross Kemp. He has had a fascinating career. He started out on soap operas (which are very popular in Britain and people don't look down on them like they do here), and besides all of the other primetime dramas and movies he's done, he also did some investigative journalism. Very interesting. I can't see that happening here. Can you imagine if someone like Wolf Blitzer or Anderson Cooper had acting careers as well?

Silver Spring, MD — A dark mystery series in the vein of Prime Suspect and Murphy’s Law, Without Motive makes its DVD debut from Acorn Media on October 11, 2011. There’s a serial killer on the loose, and it’s up to Detective Constable Jack Mowbray (Ross Kemp, EastEnders) and his team to stop the murders. A top ratings hit in the U.K., the gripping police drama features tight plotting, suspense and a strong ensemble cast including Kenneth Cranham (Rome), Jamie Foreman (Layer Cake), Lou Gish (Coupling), and Hazel Ellerby (Peak Practice). The series aired on ITV from 2000–01 and is available on DVD for the first time with this release. The 4-disc set includes the complete series, with a total of 12 episodes from Series 1 and 2 ($59.99, www.AcornOnline.com)

Detective Constable Jack Mowbray has seen a lot of disturbing things on the job. But somehow the family man has never taken it home with him—until now. In this complete two-series set, the brutal murder of a young woman in Bristol sets off a chain of events that may change Mowbray forever and tear his family apart.

When the Bristol murder is linked to a series of recent killings, the investigating team grows to more than a dozen detectives and just as many petty jealousies and full-blown rivalries. Mowbray’s boss, DCS Henderson (Kenneth Cranham), keeps the pressure on as it becomes clear that the latest killing will not be the last. Mowbray and his colleagues race to find a predator who will strike again—without apparent motive. A ratings winner in the U.K., Series 1 follows the hunt for the serial killer, while Series 2 searches for a copycat criminal.
