Veronica Mars - The Complete First Season (Season Four) DVD cover

"Veronica Mars - The Complete First Season (Season Four)"

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 10/20/19

This is one of my favorite shows of all time. If you haven't watched the first three seasons, and the film, you'll want to go back and watch those first. Now, I'm sure you could watch this season as a standalone, but you'll be missing out on so much, and you won't know who all the characters are.

There are many characters in the show, throughout all of the seasons, and this fourth season that aired on HULU brought many of the characters back.  Frankly, even if you've already seen those older seasons, you might want to re-watch them in order to remember who everyone is.

Veronica (Kristen Bell) started out as a teenaged detective, who was trying to solve the murder of her best friend, Lilly Kane (in the first season).  Her dad, Keith, was sheriff and then became a private eye, so she followed in his footsteps. In this fourth season, Veronica, now in her 30's, and her dad, are working together as private detectives, but Keith is recovering from the car accident he had in the film.

Veronica and her long-time boyfriend Logan (Jason Dohring) are together this season, but he comes and goes often because of his job in Navy Intelligence.  A motel in Neptune blows up during Spring Break. Was it an accident, or murder? Veronica takes the case.  We meet a new young girl detective, Matty (Izabela Vidovic), whose father was killed in the explosion.

As Veronica and Matty try to solve the case, with some help from Keith, we meet many characters, old and new. Patton Oswalt (in one of his best roles yet) is a funny, annoying, dorky pizza delivery guy named Penn Epner. Kirby Howell-Baptiste plays Nicole, a young woman who owns a beachside bar. She and Veronica become friends. Clifton Collins Jr. and Frank Gallegos play two amusing Mexican cartel hit men who arrive in town to find the person responsible for the explosion. Oscar winner J.K. Simmons plays a crafty old ex-con.

We also get to see old favorites, such as Daran Norris (Cliff), Percy Daggs III (Wallace) and Francis Capra (Weevil).  There are many returning favorites. They've really packed a lot of characters and story into this season.

I loved it all, except for the ending.... which is way too sad.  Watch it, but keep plenty of Kleenex on hand.  My guess is that this will be the very last "Veronica Mars" season, but never say never.

The DVD has all of the episodes and just one feature: The San Dieco Comic-Con 2019 Veronica Mars panel.  These are often boring, but they've made it slightly more interesting by interspersing characters in the show making snarky comments.  It does make it work better.  It seemed like a short panel. I would have liked to have seen more.

Spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town's lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son's killer, Veronica (Kristen Bell) is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave's wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast's answer to Daytona Beach.
“You don’t need to be a superfan to get hooked on this new series,” said Rosemary Markson, WBHE Senior Vice President, Television Marketing. “Both fans and newcomers of the critically-acclaimed series alike will be in for a treat as they relive their favorite episodes from the first season, along with the Veronica Mars at Comic Con 2019 extra feature for a deeper investigation behind the scenes.”
