DVD TV Show Reviews

Ugly Americans DVD cover vol. 1

 Ugly Americans Vol. 1

  Review by Suzanne 11/3/10

I had never seen this show before, even though it comes on before South Park. It's not bad. It's not the funniest thing I've ever seen, but it is cute. It has its moments. If you are into monsters and scifi stuff, you might find it particularly amusing. Also, if you work in any kind of bureaucratic/government job, you might like that aspect of it.

The upshot is that the "hero", Mark, who narrates the episodes, works as a social worker in New York City. In this NYC, though, there are many monsters and other weird aliens and things. Mark has to help them integrate into society (like minorities).  It's kooky and fun (and frequently kinda gross).

Mark's roommate became a zombie, so now he keeps trying to eat Mark's brains. Mark's boss is a she-demon, so she is very into him but he's kind of afraid of her (and her father, Satan).  You get the idea of the humor of the show.

The DVD set has quite a few extras. It has a paper "Field Guide to Ugly Americans" which is amusing. It's like those little pamphlets the government puts out, about things like "How to dispatch Hellspawn Back to the Nether Realm".  It has many great webisodes as well (which are arguably funnier than the show itself).  There is also the usual audio commentary, a sneak peak, and some art.  My only complaint about the DVD is there are no subtitles! I guess the hearing-disabled won't find it funny, then.

Check it out! Kids should really like it, too, especially teens.

Press Release:

 Calling All Ghouls, Freaks and Monsters -- Ugly Americans: Volume One Hits Stores Next Tuesday!

Release Timed to Coincide with Network Premiere of Season 1b on October 6th

Take New York City, add every horrifying beast, science-fiction freak, and fantasy faerie, shake thoroughly, and you've got Ugly Americans. This animated horror-comedy series follows one Mark Lilly, social worker at the Department of Integration, as he helps new citizens both human and "other" adapt to hectic life in the Big Apple. There are easier tasks than weaning vampires off blood, socializing land-whales and housebreaking werewolves, but Mark is up to the challenge. Between his stressful job, a zombie roommate and a demon girlfriend, Mark's lucky if he can sneak in a few minutes of sleep. But who can sleep when there's a drop-dead gorgeous Mermaid sitting at the bar?

In addition to Mark Lilly, the "Ugly Americans" cast features Randall Skeffington, Mark's zombie roommate (voiced by Kurt Metzger  ), Callie Maggotbone, Mark's demon boss and office fling (voiced by Natasha Leggero ), Leonard Powers, an aging drunken wizard (voiced by Randy Pearlstein), Twayne, a terrorizing demonic bureaucrat (voiced by Michael-Leon Wooley) and Lt. Grimes (voiced by Larry Murphy), a law-enforcement officer who despises non-humans. Additional characters are voiced by Devin Clark, Mike O'Gorman'gorman and Maria Bamford , Pete Holmes and Julie Klausner .

"Ugly Americans: Volume One" DVD will be released by COMEDY CENTRAL Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment on Tuesday, October 5. Every release includes an official publication from the Department of Integration, plus a horrifying selection of special features:

* Gruesome Original Webisode!
* A Terrifying Animatic Sneak Peak!
* Bloodcurdling Audio Commentary with David Stern, Devin Clark and Dan Powell!
* Ghastly Art Galleries!

The Demon Chick:

Meet Mark, Callie and Randall - three of many "Ugly Americans." Volume One is out on DVD October 5th.
