Scooby-Doo: The Mystery Begins DVD cover Scooby-Doo: The Mystery Begins

by Suzanne 9/11/09

This movie is about how the Scooby gang meets up and starts solving mysteries while in high school. It's not bad, but it's kind of lame.

I never really understood why they want to make real-life versions of cartoons, especially the non-superhero type. Cartoons are great, and since kids like them (as well as many adults), why make it live action when it might mean they won't like it as much? Makes no sense to me.

The main problem I had with the movie is that I didn't think the actors who played Daphne and Fred looked enough like the cartoon versions. Fred should be a handsome blond, and Daphne should be much prettier. They did an awesome job with Shaggy and Velma. All of the actors did an excellent job, don't get me wrong. I just think they should have given Robbie Amell (Fred) blond hair, and I think he seemed a little less-than-masculine in some parts.

A live action Scooby Doo dog is kind of weird. On the one hand, he's a dog, but on the other hand, he's supposed to be kind of human-like. To me CGI characters are kind of creepy, which is fine if it's Gollum, but Scooby Doo shouldn't be creepy. It just doesn't work for me.

Given all of that, I still have to say that kids will probably love the movie, and some teens and adults may also like it. The script and acting are not bad, and they try very hard to be a lot like the original Scooby Doo series. Even though it's not a cartoon, it has many cartoon-like moments. The plot does keep your interest. I was not expecting it to be as good as it was, actually. I figured I would be groaning and bored all the way through, but I wasn't.

The movie seems like a TV pilot, so I wonder if they will make it into a series. It is made by Cartoon Network and will be airing on that network this week. It is worth your time to watch it if you like cartoons or Scooby Doo, unless you are a Scooby Doo purist who hates when they make new ones.

The DVD only has a few features. They have a video yearbook that includes the main characters talking about themselves (a good idea but not much new is revealed). There is a Personality Quiz that is kind of neat. You answer some basic questions to find out which character you are most like (I got Velma). That was fun. There is one feature that just shows lots of video of the actors and crew on the set, but it has no real focus or direction. There is also a gag reel, a music video, and trailers.
