Queen Sugar: The Complete First Season

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 5/25/17

I was very glad to get this DVD set because I love the show, but I have a hard time understanding the dialogue when it airs on OWN. The closed-captioning on that channel is terrible. They speak like real people on this show, which means they sometimes mumble and use slang. It's harder for people like me (older people) to hear and understand the dialogue on shows like this.

This is a really good show with excellent characters. Everyone is very real. The dialogue is outstanding. The story is about a large family from Louisiana. Two sisters and a brother whose father ran a large sugarcane farm have to deal with their father's death. One of the sisters is married to a famous basketball player, caught up in scandal. The other sister sells pot and is into voodd, and is having an affair with a local cop. The brother is unemployed and trying to raise his son.  They all have kids and messed up love lives. Their aunt Violet is also a main character.

Although the show is a soap opera, it's better than any soap opera you've ever seen, without question. Anyone of any age or background should enjoy the show.

The DVD has many great features are enjoyable and fun to watch, too! Don't forget to tune in to the second season June 20th on OWN!
