DVD TV Show Reviews
Superman/Batman: Public Enemies (Two-Disc Special Edition)
This is another great cartoon superhero movie from DC Comics and Warner Brothers! I always love to watch these. I read tons of comics growing up in the 60's and 70's, especially Superman and Batman. The cartoons back then were terrible, but the ones nowadays are just like our old comics. Maybe even better.
This movie and DVD set do not disappoint. It is a great story in many ways. The basic plot is that Lex Luthor becomes president and manages to make the world think that Superman has become a bad guy. Batman helps Superman. There are many other things going on in the story, too, like a giant Kryptonite meteor headed towards earth.
There are two really great things about this movie. First, the rapport between Batman and Superman is great. They are clearly very good friends in this story, and there are many great lines and jokes. Second, it has tons of superheroes and super-villains, way more than you might expect. It has tons of action with Superman and Batman in big battles with everyone. Yet it still has a great story. YOu will really enjoy it if you like comics, superheroes, or animation.
The voices are also fabulous on this movie. Fans of other SUperman and Batman animation will recognize some of them. Tim Daly is Superman; Kevin Conroy is Batman; Clancy Brown is Lex Luthor; Levar Burton is Black Lightning, Allison Mack (Chloe on Smallville) is Power Girl; Michael Dorn is Black Manta; John C. McGinley is Metallo; Jerry O'Connell is Captain Marvel! And much more. Great cast and they do a wonderful job on this.
The DVD has some cool extras that I'm still watching (it's taking me a while) - the box says there are over 2 1/2 hours' worth, so I guess that is why. The Two-Disk set has many features as well as the movie itself.
On the first disk, you have the movie, and then the feature "Inside Blackest Night", about a comic book series featuring various Justice League characters like Green Lantern, Aquaman, The Flash, Martian Manhunter, and others that have been killed off before, coming back to life. It looks interesting and creepy. I wonder if they will be making this into a movie, too?
The other features on the first disk are about various other DC Movies (you may have seen these on other WB DC disks), such ash Wonder Woman, Gotham Knight, Justice League: The New Frontier, and Green Lantern.
The Second Disks has some really amazing features:
"Test of Minds"- where experts talk about the personality differences between Batman and Superman. It's very interesting and made me think about the two heroes in ways I never had before.
"Dinner with DCU" is a filmed dinner between Kevin Conroy (the voice of Batman), Executive Producer Bruce Timm, Voice/Casting Director Andrea Romano, and DC Comics Senior Vice President Gregory Noveck. It is a little forced but also very interesting. They mostly talk about casting Conroy as Batman in the past and present.
There is a preview of the upcoming DC Comics DVD "Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths". That sounds and looks really good. I can't wait for that one.
There are two episodes of the Superman animated series that team up Superman and Batman; they were chosen by Bruce Timm. I had never seen them, and I enjoyed watching them.
Here's the press release for the DVD
