Penny Dreadful: The Complete Second Season [Blu-ray]
Review by Suzanne Lanoue
10/21/15 |
Tastes, or personal preference, is a funny
thing. I couldn't tell you why some shows are too
depressing, or too gory, or too violent, or just plain too
gross for me, and others aren't. Why do I love "Vampire
Diaries" and "True Blood" but not "The Strain?" Why do I
love this show and not "American Horror Story" or "The
Leftovers?"
First of all, I think it has to do with how
good the acting is, whether I like the characters, and
whether I feel they're sympathetic or not. I really love all
of the characters in this series (even the really wicked
ones). They're all vulrnable or broken in some way, so I
feel bad for them. Also, I really love Josh Hartnett,
so the show would have to be really bad for me not to watch
it with him as one of the stars. I also really love Timothy
Dalton.
Secondly, although all of these shows have
great writing, some of the shows are flawed. For
instance, AHS is partly a comedy so it's written very
tongue-in-cheek. They seem to take great relish in showing
us the most twisted, disgusting, blood-soaked stories they
can imagine (and boy, can they imagine!). I don't like it
when there seems to be no hope whatsoever for the
characters. It's too depressing. Evil shouldn't win.
That's what's great about this show. Even
though the can be really disgusting, and horrible things
happen, and the show's heroes go through a lot, there is
still always hope. It's not just all about the gore,
either. There is plenty of it, and of sex and nudity, but it
works with the type of story they're telling, which is also
finely crafted.
It's also just really fun seeing the
mash-up of Dracula, Frankenstein, Dorian Grey and the rest.
The show may be like a "Penny Dreadful" but it certainly is
the opposite of dreadful.
If you haven't watched this show before,
do yourself a favor and watch both the first season and this
second season. You won't be sorry. Both are great fun and
full of wonderful horror, suspense, action, drama, romance
and even a little humor.
The Blu-Ray is always good to have. It's
high quality video. There aren't a ton of features, but the
ones they do have are worth watching. The show has
already been renewed for a third season! Yay!
