 Nip/Tuck: The Complete Series

  Review by Suzanne 11/10/10

Nip/Tuck is written by a brilliant writer named Ryan Murphy. You may also know him from the hit series "Glee". Nip/Tuck is a drama (really a soap opera), but it is also a very dark, black comedy. Murphy is able to take dramatic situations and find the dark humor in them. With Nip/Tuck, there is a lot of material because you have two very egotistical and messed-up doctors, and their equally messed-up families, and then you have all their crazy patients, most of whom are very unhappy. These character problems, combined with all the blood and gore of surgery, are what Murphy uses to make his dark humor. In Glee, he lightens it up quite a bit and makes it more of a farce with moments of dark humor.

I really enjoyed the actors they chose for this show, particularly Julian McMahon, whom I already loved on "Charmed". I've come to enjoy seeing Dylan Walsh and the others as well. I enjoy the writing and the soap-opera-like drama, and it makes me chuckle constantly. The only thing that is hard to watch is that they seem to do everything they can to make you squirm. The cutting and the blood is bad enough, but then they put the characters into bad situations that make you want to turn off the TV (but you don't because you have to see what happens next). That is very good writing.

For instance, in just the first few episodes, Christian get waterboarded, as well as other torture, and they inject botox into several parts of his body, including his penis. I don't even have one of those, but it was still hard to watch. Then Sean's son, Matt, decides he wants to be circumcised, but this parents won't let him do it, so he attempts to do it on his own, following the instructions of a website! Ouch!! The series is filled with scenes like this, and many sex scenes as well. You do not want to watch this show if you are squeamish about, well, anything. But if you can ignore that part, the rest is golden.

The complete set of all of the nip/tuck episodes is fantastic for any fan to own. It contains all of the previous seasons' episodes and their extras. It would take you a good month or so, I would think to view all six seasons and all of the features (depending on whether or not you have a job). They didn't really add anything to the complete set, but still, it's a good buy if you want to own the whole thing. It certainly takes up less room than having the individual sets. It also comes in a pretty silver box.

Press Release and clips:

Synopsis:  Hotshot plastic surgeons Dr. Sean McNamara (Dylan Walsh) and Dr. Christian Troy (Julian McMahon) experience full-blown midlife crises as they confront career, family and romance problems over six seasons of this groundbreaking series. Set first in South Miami Beach and later moving to L.A., these cutting-edge stories range from funny to suspenseful to uncommonly powerful. Surgeries are graphically bold. Sexuality is rampant. Guest stars who go under the knife include Rosie O’Donnell, Joan Rivers, Kathleen Turner and Larry Hagman, among others. From Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy, Nip/Tuck is a prescription for entertainment unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Available on DVD:       November 2nd
