Merlin: The Complete Second Season

  Review by Suzanne 1/31/11

If you like shows like "Doctor Who", "Robin Hood", and "Smallville", or shows from the past like "Hercules" and "Xena", or movies like "Harry Potter", then you will probably like "Merlin". I have not seen season one yet, but starting from season 2, I did not have any trouble figuring out who was whom. We all pretty much know the legend of King Arthur and Merlin (or various versions of it from TV, movies, and books).  In this version, Merlin and Arthur are teenagers, and Arthur's father rules in Camelot as king.

Just like "Smallville", Merlin is still figuring out how to use his powers. He is not as cute as Tom Welling. He's a more realistic teenager - gawky, awkward and full of insecurity and doubt, and with big ears.  The kid who plays Arthur is very cute, though.  Arthur's father, Uther, is played by Anthony Head, whom you may recognize from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer".  Merlin has a wise old mentor named Gaius that helps him, as well as an old dragon that he occasionally visits.

The special effects, costumes, all that fun stuff, is great.  The stories are good enough without being too silly or stupid or boring. It is definitely worth watching. Having watched season 2 episodes, now I'm going to have to go back and watch season one! Season 3 just started on Syfy.

The DVD has many good extras, including the usual audio commentaries; information about the cast and crew; a Behind The Scenes feature; another feature about making the show; photos, and wallpapers that you can download for your computer.

I think anyone who likes adventure, action, or sword and sorcery will enjoy this. Kids should enjoy it, too. It doesn't have all the sex and violence that a show like Spartacus would have.

Synopsis: Merlin is back with even more magic, adventure and romance as the young wizard struggles to protect Prince Arthur in the perilous world of Camelot. While battling deadly assassins, mystical monsters and the most powerful sorcerers Camelot has ever seen, Merlin must work harder than ever to conceal his unique abilities, as King Uther redoubles his war against magic. And Merlin isn't the only one whose destiny calls-Lady Morgana , Uther's ward, discovers dangerous secrets she dare not reveal; Lancelot returns, changing everything for both Gwen and Arthur; and King Uther fall in love, little knowing that the charming Lady Catrina is secretly a hideous troll. And as Arthur continues on his path from arrogant prince to the noble and just King Arthur of legend, we see the return of the one prophesised to kill him-the mysterious druid boy, Mordred. Featuring exciting new villains, white-knuckle stunt sequences, and spectacular CGI monsters, Merlin season two is more thrilling than ever.
