DVD TV Show Reviews

  Review by Suzanne 5/30/10

I don't know what I can tell you about this that you probably already haven't heard elsewhere. It has gotten rave reviews ever since it aired.  Just like the previous specials "Blue Planet" and "Planet Earth", this is a beautiful educational documentary about creatures great and small.  This one focuses on their lives - how they reproduce, eat, and struggle to survive.

Of course it has the most fabulous cinematography, and it is narrated deftly by Oprah Winfrey.  The DVD has some great extras, including a "making of" mini-documentary for each episode, narrated by famed wildlife filmographer David Attenborough and deleted scenes.  You can also play the show without any sound (why you can't just turn down the volume, I have no idea).

It is a good set for anyone to have that enjoys pretty pictures, or animals, or educational TV.  Children should love this.  If the thought of watching anything on the history or discovery channel makes you want to doze off, you should skip it! I'm sure that this DVD set will be a very popular gift this year.

More info:

Four years in the making, filmed over 3,000 days, across every continent and in every habitat, Life is the latest wildlife blockbuster from the BBC’s award-winning Natural History Unit, the producers of Planet Earth and The Blue Planet. Packed with excitement, revelation, entertainment, and stunning screen firsts, this breathtaking ten-part epic presents 130 incredible stories from the frontiers of the natural world. Discover the glorious variety of life on Earth and the spectacular and extraordinary tactics animals and plants have developed to stay alive. This is evolution in action; individual creatures under extreme pressure to overcome challenges from adversaries and their environment, pushing the boundaries of behavior.
