  Krypton: The Complete First Season

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 3/1/19

“Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.”

I've always been a huge fan of Superman, Supergirl and the whole DC Universe (and most other superheroes, for that matter). I love any series that has superheroes or is related to superheroes.  "Krypton" is not as brilliant or twisted as "Gotham," but it's very enjoyable.

The show takes place long before Superman was born. In fact, it's really not about the planet Krypton, so much as it is about the city of Kandor (at least in the first season). Most Superman fans know that there was "Bottle City of Kandor" that Superman had in his Fortress of Solitude. It was a small city, in miniature form.  Depending on which version of the comics you read, Kandor became miniaturized in different ways.

Through this series, we learn that Brainiac is the threat to Kandor (and in much of the Superman comics, he is the one responsible as well).  Most of the characters in the show are not ones we've ever heard of because they're Superman's ancestors, and their friends, and loved ones. The House of El, as well as the House of Zod, is featured.

Cameron Cuffe (from "The Halcyon") stars as Seg-El, our hero (who looks a lot like his grandson, Kal-El). Georgina Campbell (from "Broadchurch") plays his girlfriend, Lyta-Zod. Ann Ogbomo (from "Wonder Woman") plays her mother, Jayna-Zod.  The cast does a great job. The story really sucks you in, too. It twists and turns in unexpected ways and has many shocks and surprises.

There are a few familiar characters, besides Brainiac, such as General Zod (Colin Salmon from "Arrow") and Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos from "Dark Matter"), although the creators of the show put their own spin on them (and improved them, too, in my opinion).  Brainiac is much scarier here than in any other TV show or movie we've seen.

This version of Krypton is not at all like the Krypton we've seen in other TV shows, comics or movies. It is deeply flawed and is not a shining city. It has class issues. The show has a lot of politics, which make it very interesting, as well as tons of action and adventure. The cliffhanger for season one is a doozy.

It's hard to watch prequels, in a way, because you know that certain characters have to live and certain things have to happen, as much as the heroes try to prevent them. We know that Seg-El has to live (or at least, his progeny does). So does Zod.  Kandor has to go, and Krypton has to blow up eventually. It'll be fascinating to see what show does with the mythos. I can't wait for season 2, and I'm sure there will be many surprises to keep us guessing. The show returns in June.

There are some good features on here that go behind-the-scenes to tell you how they created the show in great detail as well as deleted scenes.
