Jane the Virgin: The Complete First Season

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 10/9/15

This is a fun show, and I reviewed the first episode, but I confess that I did fall behind in watching it last season. There are just so many hours in the day to watch my favorite TV shows!  I liked this one a lot, but it's not at the top of my list. It really tries hard to be as good as "Ugly Betty," but to me it's not. I think it's because the actors are just not as charismatic as on that show, and the humor is just not quite as funny.  I wouldn't call either show a "comedy" in the traditional sense, but they're more like light dramas or farces rather than comedies.

Still, the show is worth watching if you can find the time and you like a good fantasy/farce. It's great that the CW has so many of these shows starring young women in different types of roles. I would have loved to have had a show like this when I was younger. Even though we may not be able to completely relate to a young woman that gets accidentally impregnated, or a woman who becomes a zombie, or a woman that leaves a space station to explore the Earth with other young people, but we can at least appreciate that the shows have young woman who are strong and dealing with their problems -- many of which involv their family, jobs, boyfriends, etc. I'm glad the show is still around and returning next week for its second season!

You should definitely watch this one because it's entertaining and fun...and it may surprise you. A lot of people love this show. The DVD has two featurettes, plus a gag reel and some unaired scenes. I hope season two has even more! See below for all of the details.
