Hung: The Complete First Season
Review by Suzanne 6/30/10
I didn't expect to like this show that much. I thought it would
be like "Weeds", only with sex instead of drugs. It's nothing like it, though.
Hung is about a desperate and broke man who decides to become a gigolo because
he feels he has no other skills or anything going for him. It's very
relevant to the times, since so many people are desperate and broke, looking for
second careers and losing their homes.
It's mostly about lonely, desperate people who find friends and
a future in unlikely places. Although it seems outrageous in the subject
matter, the characters and story are very realistic in many ways. It has humor,
but it's not silly. It's not a farce. The people are very real, like
Thomas Jane plays the main character, Ray, who used to be a
popular football hero in high school. His life has not gone the way he thought
it would, and now he's divorced and has lost almost everything. He's in a job
that doesn't pay well, that he's not too fond of, and his kids have moved out
after his house almost burns down. Jane is not what I'd call a great
actor, but he is very good in this role. He and his new friend Tanya are
very likable, and the show focuses a lot on their friendship and how it
develops. Anne Heche is very good at his bitchy ex-wife. It's a
multi-dimensional role, though, so she is more than just a bitch.
The first episode of the season was so intriguing that I felt
like I was watching a really good movie. I kept watching, even as the hour grew
late. The show sucks you in to these characters and their lives.
Even though it's about prostitution, it doesn't have as much sex
or nudity as I would expect. It has some, of course, but less, I would say, than
"True Blood". A lot of the show is about male-female relationships, not
just sex, and female sexuality, and how men and women treat each other. It's
very interesting in that way.
It's also very funny, but again it's realistic. The humor arises
from real situations. I enjoy it a lot and look forward to more.
The DVD has three main features. One discusses the show in
general, just as this review has. The actors, producers, writers etc. talk about
the show. Another feature discusses the female characters in the show.
There is also a funny video sequence where they shoot a personal ad for Ray. Of
course there are the usual audio commentaries as well.
This show is definitely not for children. Any adult should enjoy
it, though. I would advise you to buy or rent it!

In dire straits and facing tough times, Drecker decides to take
advantage of his one extraordinary, God-given gift that sets him apart

and downs of a venture about which he knows next to nothing - but
which he may be uniquely qualified to exploit.
Filled with insightful bonus materials in both the Standard Definition
and Blu-ray Disc versions (with 1080p video and DTS-HD master audio),
the special features allow fans to explore Drecker's new "career" path
a little deeper. Features include:

* Three audio commentaries with series creators/executive
producers Colette Burson and Dmitry Lipkin and writer Brett C.
The series stars Thomas Jane (The Punisher, *61 from HBO) as Ray
Drecker and Jane Adams (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) as
Ray's unlikely business partner, Tanya Skagle, both of whom received
Golden Globe(r) nominations for their roles; Anne Heche (Men in Trees)
as Ray's ex-wife, Jessica Haxon; Eddie Jemison (Ocean's Thirteen) as
Jessica's successful husband Ronnie; Sianoa Smit-McPhee (As the Bell
