I enjoyed this a lot, even though it's very violent and
blood-soaked. It's also got a lot of humor, and the violence
and blood is really the cartoonish kind that you would find
in any Robert Rodriguez or Quentin Tarantino film. It's not
scary or sad. It's artful and stylized.
Although this is a show about vampires, they don't come
in right away. You're eased into the supernatural elements,
and they are just part of this larger story about gangsters
and the people they encounter.
The first episode is about one day where two lawmen
encounter these two bank robbers unexpectedly in a gas
station store. However, the show is pretty mind-bending in
that it goes back and forth in time in subsequent episodes
so you see everything that led up to that pivotal meeting.
Don Johnson plays the Texas Ranger, Earl McGraw, that is
very wise and folksy, before he gets shot by the bad guys.
He does a great job (he's always been a very under-rated
actor). Apparently Earl has been a character in a number of
different movies. His assistant is Freddie (Jesse Garcia),
who chases after the bank robbers.
The bank robbers, Richie and Seth Gekko, are very
handsome and charismatic, and they provide a lot of humor as
well as terror. Also, there's more to one of them than meets
the eye, as we learn eventually. Another important character
is gangster Carlos, played by Wilmer Valderrama (you won't
recognize him if you've only seen him in comedies).
The characters in the show are wonderful, and you'll
recognize many of the actors, including Robert Patrick, who
plays widowed preacher Jacob Fuller. He and his family are
on a vacation of sorts when they meet up with the infamous
It's a really intriguing show, and a wild ride. You can
either enjoy the many layers of the characters and story, or
you can just sit back and have fun with the rest of it.
Either way, it's great. The TV show is based on a movie that
I haven't seen, which was also directed by Robert Rodriguez.
I don't know why this wasn't on a better network than the El
Rey Network, but it's fabulous and should have gotten wider
views on at least Showtime or HBO. It also aired on Netflix
before coming to DVD.
There are many extras, but they're all very short. Many
of them are commercials or promos. I would like to see more
extras with interviews but I guess we can hope they will
show up on future seasons! Don't miss this excellent show.
"Radically different. Disruptive.
A fascinating ride."
