The Flash The Complete Fifth Season

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 8/26/19

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this post. The opinions I share are my own.

I love "The Flash," and I never miss an episode. They come up with such great ideas every season, with so much action. They write interesting characters and fun stories. They have a nice combination of drama and comedy, and I adore the actors who portray Barry, Iris, Caitlin, Cisco, Harry, Joe, Cecile, Ralph - the whole Team Flash. This season they brought Barry and Iris' daughter, Nora, from the future. She was a fun character with many layers. I can't wait to see what happens next season!

I love getting these DVD's. I would buy them, anyway, because I collect many shows that I like - especially superhero TV shows and movies.  "The Flash" is probably my favorite of all of The CW shows because it's usually more light and fun than "Arrow," and it has more cute guys on it than the other shows. I think that they do a better job on "The Flash" of having a lot of humor to balance all the drama.  They don't let the humor go too far (which sometimes happens on "Legends of Tomorrow"), nor do they weight down the show with too much drama, like on "Arrow" and "Black Lightning." I love it when a show has equal parts both light and dark.

One thing I've always loved about this show is that Barry is a true hero, both in his superhero life and in his job. He's a very good guy. Many superheroes portrayed nowadays are very dark and/or brooding, or they can barely be called heroes. I love how Barry always does what he thinks is right (even if he turns out to be wrong sometimes). He doesn't kill people like Oliver does on "Arrow." He's also a regular guy that anyone can relate to.  He's had a tragic life, but he doesn't let it get him down too long. The people that surround him are the same way. They're true good guys.

The DVD set is very good, like all of the past DVD sets have been.  There are many features, such as one about the crossover event; an in-depth one about the villains; "The Evolution of Killer Frost;" and the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con panel; as well as deleted scenes and a gag reel. If you're a fan of "The Flash", you will love this!  There's only 4 months until Christmas. Shop early and buy it for your favorite scifi/fantasy/superhero fan, too.

Shortly after defeating The Thinker, Barry Allen/The Flash and his wife, Iris, were stunned by the arrival of their already grown, speedster daughter from the future, Nora (Jessica Parker Kennedy). However, acclimating to their lives as parents won’t be the only challenge they face, as Season Five pits Team Flash against Central City’s latest scourge – the DC Super-Villain Cicada (Chris Klein).

“The Flash is currently The CW’s highest-rated series, and after five strong seasons, The Flash remains a fan favorite," said Rosemary Markson, WBHE Senior Vice President, Television Marketing. “In addition to the 22 Season 5 episodes, fans can enjoy over 2.5 hours of special features plus 2 bonus Crossover episodes from Arrow and Supergirl on the Blu-ray release."

In addition to featuring all 22 episodes from the fifth season in high-definition, as well as a digital copy of the season (available in the U.S.), the 4-disc Blu-ray will also include all three crossover episodes, a tremendous value and collectors’ opportunity.

The Flash stars Grant Gustin (Arrow, Glee), Candice Patton (The Game), Danielle Panabaker (Sky High, Friday the 13th), Carlos Valdes (Arrow, Once), Hartley Sawyer (Caper, Glory Daze), Danielle Nicolet (Central Intelligence), Jessica Parker Kennedy (The Secret Circle, Black Sails), and Chris Klein (American Pie movies), with Tom Cavanagh (Ed, The Following) and Jesse L. Martin (Law & Order). Based on the characters from DC, The Flash is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros.
