The Family Fang

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 7/1/16

I enjoyed this movie, even though it really accurately describes some awful family dynamics. When it begins, you don't really know what's going on, but several mysteries unfold as to who these people are and what has happened to them.

There are spoilers here, so please stop reading now if you mind spoilers!  The story is about this family, The Fangs, where the parents are performance artists, and they use their own children as subjects for their little art movies. It's ultimately horrific, but the relationships are what make it interesting -- particularly the one between the brother (Jason Bateman, known most for the series "Arrested Development") and sister (movie star Nicole Kidman, who will soon be seen the HBO series "Big Little Lies"). The performances are outstanding. Batemen also produced and directed the movie and he's done a fine job. Sometimes these indy movies are slow and boring, but there are no dull moments in this one.

It may be hard to watch, particularly if your family experience growing up was very dysfunctional. Even though the Fang parents didn't beat or molest their children, and they provided the basics of food, comfort, home etc. they definitely did do a lot of emotional abuse to really screw up their kids, and that can be hard to watch if it brings up your own emotional issues.

It's worth watching, though, for the performances and the story. Check it out! Worth mentioning is Christopher Walken, who's always excellent, as the father. He always makes it looks so easy, no matter what role he's in. Kathryn Hahn, who was also in Bateman's first movie "Bad Words," plays his mother here when she's younger.

The DVD only has one little extra of audio commentary by Bateman. Too bad there's not more.
