Code Black: Season 1

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 8/1/16

This is a very enjoyable medical show. It fills the gap nicely from the absence of "ER." I really miss that show, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.  I do love "Grey's Anatomy," but that show is more of a soap opera. The drama is more about who the doctors are sleeping with than the patients.

"Code Black" is more about the patients that come into the ER. The term "Code Black" refers to when their ER has more patients than they can handle.  The show is based on a documentary about the busiest ER in the U.C., Los Angeles County.  The series takes place in the fictional Angels Memorial Hospital.

Although the star of the show is Marcia Gay Harden, who plays Doctor Leann Rorish (director of the ER), it is an ensemble show, like "ER" or "Grey's Anatomy," et al. Veteran actor Luis Guzmán  is the head nurse, Jesse, known as "Mama." The interns are played by relative newcomers. They do a good job of introducing them all and the stories are exciting and gripping.

Leanne has a tragedy in her life, so now she is considered more of a risk-taker as a doctor.  While others think she's being a "cowboy," she looks at it as trying harder to save more lives.  She also teaches her interns about the ER and about life, along with Mama. Check it out! I think you'll enjoy it.

There are quite a few good special features, including several behind-the-scenes extras, and deleted scenes.  It's a good collection to have.
