The Borgias: The Complete Series DVD cover

 The Borgias: The Complete Series

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 6/10/17

I'm very glad to have this set because I somehow missed this series and have never seen it before (probably because I don't have Showtime). I love Jeremy Irons, so it's great to see him in anything. He's really fabulous in this show.

This show ran three seasons, but it's cable, so it's only 29 episodes. That's barely more than a season for broadcast networks!  Too bad they didn't get at least one more season to wrap things up. The show's creator had envisioned four seasons. Apparently the show was just very expensive to make. They didn't even want to spend money to make a movie at the end.

From what I've read the show is not completely historically accurate (what shows are?), but they do a fairly good job, for the most part. Drama matters more than history, anyway. It's not "The Tudors," but it's not "Reign," either.

The first season is all about establishing the characters. They do a good job with that, but the second season is where things really start to pick up with the story and it gets really good.  You should definitely check it out, even though it didn't have quite a good finish to the series.

The special features are pretty good on the DVD set.  They have "The World of Borgias," interviews, behind the scenes extras, biographies and bloopers.

The Borgias: The Complete Series
Release Date: June 13
Description: The Borgias is the epic saga of one of the most powerful crime families in history. Led by Academy Award Winner Jeremy Irons, the critically acclaimed series follows family patriarch Rodrigo Borgia (Irons) as he ascends to the papal throne and rules 15th century Italy with a heavy hand, seizing enormous control, wealth, and influence for his clan while also gaining a formidable list of enemies that conspire to overthrow his growing empire. To defend the family name, son Cesare (Francois Arnaud) commands armies across Renaissance Europe, daughter Lucrezia (Holliday Grainger) seduces political friends and foes alike, and both hold desires that threaten to bring down the dynasty from within. Donít miss a moment of the brilliant, sensual, unpredictable drama that is every bit as ambitious as the Borgias themselves. All 3 addictive seasons are now available in a complete series set!

Starring Academy Award winner and Golden Globe nominee Jeremy Irons (Reversal of Forunte, Casanova), Francois Arnaud (Blindspot) and Holliday Grainger (Cinderella - Live Action, Great Expectations), the original SHOWTIME drama "The Borgias: The Complete Series" arrives in a newly packaged collection with all three seasons of 29 episodes on nine discs.

Created, executive produced and written by Academy Award-winning director Neil Jordan (The Crying Game, Michael Collins), "The Borgias" is the epic saga of one of the most powerful crime families in history.
