The Beverly Hillbillies: The Official First Season

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 5/31/16

This is one of those great old shows I grew up watching, and it spawned a lot of similar shows, like "Green Acres" and "Petticoat Junction." I watched and loved them all.  As an adult, they bring back a lot of good memories. Although TV shows were simpler back then, and had simpler jokes, they still make me laugh.  The actors in the show were great. Buddy Ebsen (Jed) had a long movie career before this show and went to star in the private eye "Barnaby Jones." Irene Ryan (Granny) also had a long career before this show. The newcomers Donna Douglas (Elly Mae) and Max Baer, Jr. (Jethro) were both perfect for these roles. The secondary characters on the show were also great, especially the banker Mr. Drysdale (Raymond Bailey, a great character actor) and his secretary Miss Hathaway (Nancy Kulp).

Incidentally, the 1993 movie was also very good; they did a great job of bringing the show back to life with the same characters (different actors).

This is a good TV set to have, whether you grew up with the show or not. Any kid or family should especially love it.  This set has all of the uncut episodes, remastered and looking great.

Release Date: April 26, 2016

Synopsis
Join the Clampett family as they move to the most famous zip code in the world when the seven-time Emmy award®-nominated series THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES: THE OFFICIAL FIRST SEASON arrives on DVD April 26 from CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution. This special collection not only includes digitally remastered episodes with upgraded picture and sound, but also features the original extended pilot episode. Rarely seen, this episode offers a special glimpse into TV history with an unfamiliar intro to the new series, The Hillbillies of Beverly Hills, extended scenes, and staged vignettes featuring as-yet unseen characters destined to become one of America’s most favorite TV families.

Full of down-home charm, THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES: THE OFFICIAL FIRST SEASON  includes all 36 episodes of the debut season and follows the Clampetts, Jed (Buddy Ebsen), Granny (Irene Ryan), Elly May (Donna Douglas), and Jethro (Max Baer Jr.), as they accidentally strike oil on their land and move from their backwoods cabin to a Beverly Hills mansion. On their journey to fulfill their dreams of swimming pools and movie stars, their humorous hillbilly lifestyle clashes with the “city folk” of Beverly Hills.

The first season of The Beverly Hillbillies aired from September 1962 to March 1963. This set has all 36 uncut and remastered episodes spread out over 5 single-sided dual-layered dvds.

The episodes on this set are:

Video: The remastering on this set is on par with the remastering jobs done on the second and third season sets. The episodes are presented in their original full frame 1:33 aspect ratio and look great. The show is in black & white and overall looks clean and as sharp as a SD dvd is going to look.

Audio: The only audio track on this set is English Mono. It is clear sounding and I have no complaints

Subtitles: There are English subtitles only.

Extras: This set includes the option to watch the episodes with their original sponsor openings and closings. There is also an option to watch the extended version of 'The Clampetts Strike Oil'.

We need more episode guide recap writers, article writers, MS FrontPage and Web Expression users, graphics designers, and more, so please email us if you can help out!  More volunteers always needed!  Thanks!
