A Day Late & A Dollar Short DVD cover

A Day Late and A Dollar Short

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 7/14/14

I really enjoyed this movie. At first, I wasn't sure if I would because the dialogue wasn't that great. In fact, I found it very unbelievable. However, the dialogue improves as the movie goes along, and the story draws you in. There are many interesting characters as well.

If you enjoy soap operas, you should like this movie. It's basically a soap, although it has more humor than most of them do nowadays. Whoopi Goldberg plays an asthmatic woman with a large family who finds out she's about to die, so she wants to try to fix her children's and husband's problems before she goes.

The movie spends a lot of time showing us each family member and what their problems are, in detail, so you get a feel for them. Whoopi's character Viola does a voice-over throughout the movie to help us with that as well. She and the other esteemed actors, such as Ving Rhames, elevate the movie quite a bit into something that's better than it would have been.

The script was written by Terry McMillan, who's best known for the movies "Waiting to Exhale" and "How Stella Got Her Groove Back". Although the story is about an African-American family, is written by an African-American woman and stars African-American  actors, it really could have been about any American family.  We all know people like this and have seen them on TV and in movies as well. To a certain extent, some of the characters and situations are cliched, but the performances and how the movie proceeds makes it seem better.

The cast is full of actors you'll recognize from other shows and movies, particularly Mekhi Phifer from "ER" and "Torchwood" (in a role that is very different from those); Kimberly Elise, and Anika Noni Rose, among others.

If you don't like it, chances are that your mom or aunt will definitely enjoy it. It has a nice ending, although not without some tragedy.  It's not a great film, but it's a fun way to pass a few hours.

Whoopi Goldberg Headlines Uplifting Film Arriving On DVD July 15 From Lionsgate Home Entertainment

Based on Terry McMillan's (Waiting to Exhale, How Stella Got Her Groove Back) best-selling novel, A Day Late And A Dollar Short arrives on DVD July 15 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Academy Award®, Golden Globe®, Daytime Emmy®, Grammy® and Tony Award® winner Whoopi Goldberg headlines alongside an all-star cast including Mekhi Phifer (TV's "ER"), Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction), Kimberly Elise (John Q.) and Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls).  A Day Late And A Dollar Short follows a woman doing all she can to make amends and bring her family back together before time slips away. The DVD will be available for the suggested retail price of $14.98.

When irascible matriarch Viola Price (Goldberg) learns that her next asthma attack is likely to kill her, she sets out to fix her fractured family before she sets a foot anywhere near the grave. It's the kind of meddling that the Price family hasn't experienced from Viola in decades, and she won't have an easy time bending her loved ones to her will.
