DVD TV Show Reviews

  Review by Laurie 12/29/07

This film takes place in Greece.  It tells the story of the Battle of Thermopylae.  This film is the story of King Leonidas of Sparta.  King Leonidas leads 300 of his soldiers against the Persian army, led by King Xerxes.  King Xerxes is trying to take over Sparta and the rest of Greece.  In the end, King Leonidas and his 300 men perish heroically in order to preserve freedom for Sparta and Greece.  But before King Leonidas dies, he sends an injured soldier, Dilios, back to Sparta to tell the story of the 300 heroic men.  The King asks that his people remember the 300 men and their cause.  One year after the original battle, Dilios engages the Persians in one final battle.  He brings with him 10,000 Spartan warriors and 30,000 additional Greeks.

Dilios narrated much of the story.  This film was full of action.  It was also full of violence and lots of bloodshed.  It told a story of free men standing up to a tyrant.  The movie was based on fact.  Although the actors (Gerard Butler and Rodrigo Santoro) were unknown to me, their performance was exceptional.  The DVD includes “commentary” by the director, screenwriter, and the director of photography.  I enjoyed this movie because it was based on real historical events and people.  Anyone who enjoys intense action or Greek history would definitely enjoy this movie.
