The 100 The Complete Fourth Season DVD cover

The 100: The Complete Fourth Season

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 7/18/17

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.”

I've watched every episode of this show since it first aired. It can be tough to watch sometimes. For one thing, they kill off a lot of characters, especially ones that are very likable.  Secondly, it can sometimes be very violent or have scenes of torture. This season is not so bad that way, I'm glad to say. There is plenty of fighting and battles, and people die in some gruesome ways, but it's not as horrible to watch as in previous seasons.

One thing I really love is that the show has great characters that you love, even if the characters do some morally reprehensible things.  No one is unredeemable, and everyone is human. The most sadistic jerk can become a hero.  The most naive young person can become a murderer. Also, it has a lot of action, and the story twists and turns in surprising ways.

At the end of last season, they found out that all of the nuclear facilities around the world would be melting down within 6 months. Their goal this year, at the beginning of the season, was to find a way to fix that. Of course, the goals constantly change in this show. By the end of the season, their goal was to save as many people left in the human race as they possibly could (but they were limited in how much space they had). I don't want to ruin it for you by giving you more details.

There was one point in the show, where I felt like it was a little bit like "Hunger Games," but then they put a really quick end to that idea by killing off someone!  Whoops, never mind. That's how they surprise you. They killed off at least three characters this year that we'd grown to like, one that was on there since the beginning.  It makes you want to cry sometimes, but you do turn in to watch.  It may be a little unbelievable at points, but it's very entertaining.

I can't wait to see next season because as usual, they had a helluva cliff-hanger! It's interesting to me that they could have ended it with a certain major character, when she's throwing up at the island lab (no spoilers here!), when we think she might be dying, but instead they showed her a little later on, healthy and alive (with a great new hairstyle and a young companion). Maybe they thought people might tune out if they thought she wasn't returning...? Or perhaps they just thought that was too unoriginal.

I had already saved these on my DVR, but I was glad to get them on DVD as well. They have lots of features: deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes features with cast and crew, gag reel and more. I had no idea that Bob Morley (Bellamy) is Australian!  Cool. Anyway, check it out if you love this show.

If you haven't seen "The 100" before, you should definitely check out the earlier DVD's first because otherwise you will be a little lost.  That's true of most shows nowadays because the characters and their stories are so complex.

In the midst of death and destruction, relationships are put to the test as the 100 fight for their very existence. These heroes enter the fourth season at the epicenter of both the Grounder world and their newly founded homebase of Arkadia. After season three’s all-out war, a far more lethal threat has risen to the surface: Clarke has learned that Earth’s remaining nuclear reactors are melting and will soon set the atmosphere on fire.  ALIE, the A.I. who launched the world’s nuclear missiles causing the apocalypse, was telling the truth. With the human race doomed to face an unbeatable enemy, Clarke and her allies amongst Arkadia and the Grounders must fight for humankind and all life itself. But with hope fleeting and the end inevitable, will our heroes spend their remaining days trying to survive… or finally trying to live?  The stakes have never been higher, alliances are breaking, and the world is about to collapse.  Civility has no place at the end of the world, and there’s no telling what lengths the 100 will go to in order to survive.

Based on Kass Morgan’s bestselling young adult book of the same name, The 100: The Complete Fourth Season returns with an all-star cast including Eliza Taylor (The November Man), Paige Turco (Person of Interest), Bob Morley, Marie Avgeropoulos (50/50, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief), Devon Bostick (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Christopher Larkin, Lindsey Morgan, Richard Harmon (Bates Motel), and Zach McGowan (Black Sails), with  Isaiah Washington (Grey’s Anatomy) and Henry Ian Cusick (Lost).
