Nancy Drew

Review of "Nancy Drew" 10/11/19 by Suzanne
airs Thursdays, 9pm on The CW

They've given Nancy Drew the "Riverdale" treatment for this new series. This Nancy Drew (the beautiful Kennedy McMann), and her friends and family, are nothing like any Nancy Drew you've seen before. She's an adult, for one thing - just out of high school. She has sex and works in a diner. She's angry at the world because of her mom's death. They do some exposition to show that when she was a kid, she used to solve mysteries. I suppose we're supposed to believe that this is the sequel to the original "Nancy Drew" mysteries.

Of course, she is drawn back into solving mysteries when she finds a dead body.  Along the way, we meet Ned, her boyfriend (or at least, the man she's sleeping with - Tunji Kasim); her grieving dad (Scott Wolf, "The Night Shift"); her good friends George (Leah Lewis) and Bess (Maddison Jaizani); and other people in the town.  You may recognize these character names from the Nancy Drew books, but I'm sure they were quite different characters.

One other major change in this version is that there are real ghosts in the show. Nancy is helped in solving these mysteries by ghosts. It'll be interesting to see how that affects the rest of the show.

Anyway, it's an interesting show with many possible murder suspects. Nancy finds out something horrible at the end of the first episode (worse than the murder!).  Tune in because so far, it's a good show.

MORE INFORMATION:

“NANCY DREW”
PREMIERES WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9
(9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) ON THE CW

Nancy Drew (Kennedy McMann) is a brilliant teenage detective whose sense of self had come from solving mysteries in her hometown of Horseshoe Bay, Maine – until her mother’s untimely death derails Nancy’s college plans. Devastated by her mother’s passing, Nancy swears off crime-solving while crossing off the days until she can re-apply to college. But when a socialite is murdered, Nancy finds herself a prime suspect in the crime, along with a group of other teens present at the scene: Nancy’s nemesis from high school, George Fan (Leah Lewis); a rich girl with a mysterious past, Bess Marvin (Maddison Jaizani); Nancy’s secret boyfriend, Ned “Nick” Nickerson (Tunji Kasim); and amiable burnout Ace (Alex Saxon). The five of them must team up to clear their own names – encountering emotional entanglements and even more mysteries along the way. Nancy’s reawakening brings her into conflict with her widowed father, Carson Drew (Scott Wolf), who is dating Detective Karen Hart (Alvina August). And, when a supernatural presence begins to haunt Nancy’s investigation, she discovers that the current crime has an astonishing connection to the long unsolved murder of a local girl. Whether the ghost is here to help, or hinder Nancy remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: Nancy’s going to have to unravel the clues from both the living and the dead to solve the crimes.

NANCY DREW is a production of CBS Television Studios in association with Fake Empire, with executive producers Noga Landau (“The Magicians”), Melinda Hsu Taylor (“The Gifted,” “The Vampire Diaries”), Josh Schwartz (“Gossip Girl,” “Dynasty,” “Runaways”), Stephanie Savage (“Gossip Girl,” “Dynasty,” “Runaways”) and Lis Rowinski (“Dynasty,” “Runaways”).
