Little Fires Everywhere poster

Review of "Little Fires Everywhere" 4/1/20 by Eva Diaz
Season 1 airs now on HULU

This show is an adaptation of Celeste Ng's novel, which I have not read.  Perhaps if I had read the book, the show would make more sense to me.  It was just confusing and slow-paced to me. Elena Richardson (Reese Witherspoon) sees a homeless woman, Mia Warren (Kerry Washington), living in her car with her daughter, Pearl (Lexi Underwood) and offers them her guest house to live in.  After a house fire starts, Elena uses her skills as a former newspaper reporter to investigate the person she thinks set the fire: Mia. The show than goes backward as Elena recalls how she met Mia and Pearl.  She remembers things that make her suspicious of Mia as she begins to research her background.  This is something that I think she should have done in the first place, before renting her the guest house. She seems far too trusting for this to be a realistic story.

I wish the pace of the show was a little faster, but I think that the people who have read the book might like it.  For those who have never read the book, you might find it confusing to watch, like I did. I give this show a 3 out of 5 stars because I enjoyed watching Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington - they have great chemistry together and are enthralling to watch. However, I don't think I will keep watching it because it's too confusing and didn't capture my interest enough to sit through more just to find out what's going on. If you just want to see these two great actresses together, then check it out.

Based on Celeste Ng’s 2017 bestseller, Little Fires Everywhere follows the intertwined fates of the picture-perfect Richardson family and an enigmatic mother and daughter who upend their lives. The story explores the weight of secrets, the nature of art and identity, the ferocious pull of motherhood – and the danger in believing that following the rules can avert disaster.

The cast includes Reese Witherspoon (Elena Richardson), Kerry Washington (Mia Warren), Joshua Jackson (Bill Richardson), Rosemarie DeWitt (Linda McCullough), Jade Pettyjohn (Lexie Richardson), Jordan Elsass (Trip Richardson), Gavin Lewis (Moody Richardson), Megan Stott (Izzy Richardson), Lexi Underwood (Pearl Warren), and Huang Lu (Bebe).

The series is produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, Kerry Washington’s Simpson Street and ABC Signature Studios, a part of Disney Television Studios. Liz Tigelaar (“Life Unexpected,” “Casual”) will serve as creator, showrunner and executive producer. The series is also executive produced by Reese Witherspoon, Kerry Washington, Lauren Levy Neustadter, Pilar Savone and Lynn Shelton. Author Celeste Ng serves as producer.
