Review of "Carol's Second Act" 9/28/19 by Eva Diaz
airs Thursdays, 9:30/8:30c  on CBS

I was excited to watch this show because I think that Patricia Heaton, who plays the title character of Carol Kenney, is very funny.  I always look forward to watching her shows because I know she will make me laugh.

This show is a little bit diffrent then Heaton's previous shows "Everybody  Loves Raymond" and "The Middle" because she's not playing a housewive.  Carol is a retired teacher who has recently divorced her husband and has a grown daughter, Jenny, who works as a pharmacy representative.  Carol has decided to pursue her lifelong dream of being a doctor, so shess the oldest resident in the program.  So far, most of the jokes are about her age.  If those continue, it will become a bit repetative and predictable.  It took a little effort on my part to get into the show because of the aformentioned jokes about age - there were just too many of them.  Once the show got going, about the middle of the episode, I enjoyed the relationship that Carol developed with her fellow interns. They came to her about advice on life because although Carol is an intern like them, she has lived life.  The other interns are nervous.  For example, one is nervous about giving a patient bad news, so they get Carol to do it.

At times, Carol is over eager to learn and help others.  She tends not to follow orders from her chief resident, Dr. Maya Jacobs (Ito Aghayere),  who is very tough on the interns.

I think the cast is great, and as the show proceeded, they started to click and work well together.  I enjoyed this show very much.  I hope it continues to get better in future episodes.  I think it will do very well with "Young Sheldon" and "Mom" preceeding it on Thursdays.   I think it's worth watching, and if it concentrates more on finding jokes from the relationship of the characters, rather than constant jokes about Carol's age, it will be a very funny show.

I give this show a 4 out of 5 stars and hope it will be a big hit for CBS because it makes you laugh.

EMMY AWARD WINNER PATRICIA HEATON RETURNS TO CBS AS CAROL KENNEY, A WOMAN WHO EMBARKS ON A UNIQUE SECOND ACT BY PURSUING HER DREAM OF BECOMING A DOCTOR, ON THE SERIES PREMIERE OF THE NEW COMEDY “CAROL’S SECOND ACT,” THURSDAY, SEPT. 26

“Pilot” – Carol Kenney enthusiastically begins her first day as an internal medicine intern, but has a rocky start when she disregards direct orders from her boss in order to help a patient. Also, Carol meets Dr. Frost, a senior attending physician who may be the ally Carol needs in her second act, on the series premiere of CAROL’S SECOND ACT, Thursday, Sept. 26 (9:30-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Patricia Heaton, Kyle MacLachlan, Ito Aghayere, Jean-Luc Bilodeau, Sabrina Jalees and Ashley Tisdale star.

Emmy Award winner Patricia Heaton stars in CAROL’S SECOND ACT, a comedy about a woman who embarks on a unique second act after raising her children, getting divorced and retiring from teaching: pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor. On Carol Kenney’s first day at work, she’s prepped with an abundance of life experience, people skills, talent and enthusiasm, advantages the chief resident and other newly minted interns don’t have – or immediately appreciate. Carol’s first-year partners on rounds are Lexie, who’s very nervous due to the pressure on her to succeed as the first in her family to go to college, and Daniel, a 2018 Harvard Medical School grad who’s already published in the New England Journal of Medicine…twice. Carol will need to win over their chief resident, Dr. Maya Jacobs, an all-business disciplinarian who doesn’t care for Carol’s chatty, outgoing nature. Fortunately, Carol has a couple of friendly faces at the hospital, including Dr. Frost, the accomplished senior attending physician who finds her charming, and her bubbly daughter, Jenny, a successful pharma sales rep who catches the eye of Carol’s fellow doctors. At age 50, Carol is a medical intern who must sink or swim with peers who are half her age, and it’s her enthusiasm, perspective, and yes, even her age, that may be exactly what will make her second act a great success.
