burning the witch

Review of "Siempre Bruja" 2/24/18 by Suzanne
airs now on Netflix

I enjoyed the first episode of this romantic series, and I might need to come back and watch the rest of it because it's enjoyable. I like most supernatural series.  Angely Gaviria plays Carmen, a slave in 1700's Colombia who's fallen in love with her masters' son.  The master and his wife make sure she is burned as a witch.  She is given the power to travel through time by a powerful wizard that she meets in her cell. He promises that if she goes to the future to find the woman he loves, that she can come back to the time before they killed her lover and save him.  She agrees and flees to present-day Colombia just as they're starting to burn her.

She lands in present-day Cartagena and tries to find this woman, another witch.  Of course, things don't go as easily as she'd hoped.  There is a lot more going on that the wizard didn't tell her.  The show is dubbed in English, and the dubbing doesn't sound poorly done, like some shows I've watched on Netflix.  The story reminds me of a mash-up of "Outlander" and "The Originals," to a certain extent.

MORE INFORMATION:

Carmen is a slave and a witch. She is 19 years old and is about to be burned at the stake for having committed a crime that cannot be forgiven: falling for a white man. But an old wizard offers her salvation—the ability to jump in time to a place where no one believes in witches. She will be able to travel if she agrees to use none of the powers. She agrees and finds herself in nowadays Colombia, starting a new life, meeting friends and even going to college. But once a witch, always a witch.
