The Neighborhood cast

Review of "The Neighborhood" 10/3/18 by Eva Diaz
airs Mondays 8/7c on CBS

I think Cedric the Entertainer (Calvin Butler) is very funny, and I have enjoyed him on all his shows. Cedric's character, Calvin Butler, is expexting an African family to move into the empty house in the neighborhood, but he's suprised when the family turns out to be white. The show tackles the perceived differences between the races and Calvin's struggle to get along with his neighbors, Dave Johnson (Max Greenfield) and Gemma Johnson (Beth Behrs). The show is funny at times but has some problems that need to be fixed. For example, it constantly keeps pointing out the differences in the two families, rather then pointing out the similarities between them. The running joke is that the Johnsons don't have any African American friends, so they have no idea what it is like to be African American. The second running joke is that Tina Butler (Tichina Arnold) keeps teaching Gemma African American slang words, and she constantly tells her husband Dave, "That's a word Tina taught me." That joke tends to get annoying after a few times.

I hope this show gets better in future episodes and can fix its problems because in these times, we should all try to focus on our similarities rather then our differences. I hope the writing gets stronger because the cast is talented. This show has the potential to be a hit for CBS if they take a lesson firom the "Last Man Standing" writers who present both sides of an issue in an episode, and somehow, at the end of the show, you know that despite their diffrences, they find a way to resolve the issue and still come together as a family. I give this show 4 out of 5 stars and keep watching it because it is worth watching.

MORE INFORMATION:

THE NEIGHBORHOOD

THE NEIGHBORHOOD stars Cedric the Entertainer in a comedy about what happens when the friendliest guy in the Midwest moves his family to a neighborhood in Los Angeles where not everyone looks like him or appreciates his extreme neighborliness. Dave Johnson is a good-natured, professional conflict negotiator. When his wife, Gemma, gets a job as a school principal in L.A., they move from Michigan with their young son, Grover, unfazed that their new dream home is located in a community quite different from their small town. Their opinionated next-door neighbor, Calvin Butler, is wary of the newcomers, certain that the Johnsons will disrupt the culture on the block. However, Calvin’s gracious wife, Tina, rolls out the welcome wagon; their chipper younger son, Marty, thinks the Johnsons could be good for the community; and their unemployed older son, Malcolm, finds Dave may finally be someone who understands him. Dave realizes that fitting into their new community is more complex than he expected, but if he can find a way to connect with Calvin, they have an excellent chance of making their new neighborhood their home.
