Mattfeld and Deidrick

Review of "In the Dark" 4/1/19 by Suzanne
airs Thursdays, 9/8c on The CW

I'm really enjoying this new series about Murphy, a blind woman who plays detective. She's a complete mess who drinks and smokes too much, has unsafe sex with strangers, and is not very nice to her parents, dog, or friends.  She lost her sight after she was mugged, and a kid named Tyson, who sells drugs in the alley behind her apartment, saved her.  He's her only friend, besides her lesbian vet roommate. Her parents train dogs for the blind, and they employ her, but she doesn't really work very hard for them (she mostly just gets drunk and sleeps on the job, eats candy). She finds Tyson's dead body, and then his body disappears before the police get there.  She tries to find out what happened to him, but she's blind and no one really believes that Tyson is dead.

Perry Mattfeld is outstanding as the self-destructive Murphy. Rich Sommer ("Mad Men") is Dean, the cop that she has to deal with.  Dean is a widow with a blind daughter, so he gets Murphy to bond with her. Casey Deidrick ("Days of Our Lives") plays Max, a food truck owner that she ends up dating. It's a complex show, with plenty of humor as well as mystery and pathos.  Check it out and you won't be sorry.

The only part that I didn't like was that Murphy feels Tyson's face in the very first episode (She doesn't want to, but he makes her).  So when he dies (later in the episode), she can tell it's him. That was a bit contrived. Otherwise, though, it's been very good.

In The CW’s new series IN THE DARK, Murphy (star Perry Mattfeld) is a hard-living, hard-drinking, disaffected twenty-something with a penchant for cigarettes and casual sex. She’s also blind. Murphy lives with her supportive best friend, Jess (Brooke Markham), and—more reluctantly—her trusty guide dog, Pretzel, whose presence she resents. Murphy’s closest friend is a sweet teenager named Tyson (Thamela Mpumlwana), who she befriends after he saved her from a violent mugging. Her life comes crashing down when she stumbles upon what she’s sure is the lifeless body of Tyson in the alley outside her apartment.  But when the police arrive there is no body to be found—and with Murphy not exactly sober, the police aren’t especially inclined to investigate. Murphy is determined to find the truth, no matter the risk… even if it means she has to sober up a little. IN THE DARK stars Perry Mattfeld, Rich Sommer, Brooke Markham, Casey Diedrick, Keston John, Morgan Krantz, Thamela Mpumlwana, Derek Webster and Kathleen York. IN THE DARK is from CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television, in association with Red Hour Films, with executive producers Corinne Kingsbury, Jon Collier (“Bones”), Ben Stiller (“Zoolander”), Jackie Cohn, Nicky Weinstock and Michael Showalter (“The Big Sick”).
