Card Sharks host Joel McHale

Review of "Card Sharks" 6/12/19 by Eva Diaz
airs Wednesdays, 9/8c on ABC

This is another revival of a popular game show from the 1980's. This time it's hosted by Joel Mchale (from "Community"). The rules of the show are simple: contestants have to predict whether cards will be higher or lower. First, they have to predict how 100 people answer survey questions, in order to win a turn to play the cards. The winner gets to play the bonus game, where the winning contetant bets money on whether the cards will be higher or lower, and to see if they keep the money or lose money (depending on whether their predictions are correct). I think the game is exciting, and I've always enjoyed it. I'm glad it's returned, but I dislike Joel Mchale as the host. He's too serious and low-key. Maybe it's because he has never hosted a game show before, but I just don't feel like he's rooting for the contestants to win the game. He also doesn't seem sad when they lose the game. Tthe game shows I enjoy watching most make me feel like the host wants the contestants to win just as much as the audience at home does. I hope that he gets better - I think he just needs to feel more comfrtable in his new job.

I still think the show is worth watching because the live audience in the studio is rooting for the contestants, which makes up for the lack of ethusiam from Joel Mchale. I give this show 4 out of 5 stars.

CARD SHARKS (Wednesdays, 9:00 p.m. ET)

Series Premieres Wednesday, June 12, 2019

“Card Sharks” is a game where one turn of a playing card can make you a winner or a loser! The road to glory and riches begins with two players facing off in a head-to-head elimination race where the winning player claims a $10,000 cash prize and a chance to turn that amount into a life-changing payday. The anticipation builds as the winning contestant risks their prize on predicting seven final cards. The player leaves the game with whatever amount of money they have in their bank after their prediction, and results are revealed on the flip of their seventh and final card.

Slated to air this summer on The ABC Television Network, the series will be hosted by actor and comedian Joel McHale.

“Card Sharks” is produced by Fremantle. Scott St. John is showrunner and executive producer, and Jack Martin and Jennifer Mullin are also executive producers.
